Been all over Mexico many years ago and must say the country has been transformed. But also lived down there recently. No point in going to MX if you want an American lifestyle and have no intention of learning Spanish. I never lived in an 'expat' community and always avoided them.

Have you considered some of the pueblos outside of Queretaro? I feel really drawn to Guanajuato but I'm concerned about the mobility issues of my family & friends. I don't want to live somewhere they can't visit me. Queretaro seems too big & too expensive, but a number of my Mexican contacts have recommended some of the pueblos.

When I was considering moving back to Mexico late last year, Patzcuaro was my first choice. Then I joined an "expat" FB group & read about a rash of home robberies (of gringos) in the middle of the night while the occupants were sleeping, one man describing waking up and getting locked in the house with the robbers. Then I turned my attention towards Morelia, but my Mexican contacts tell me that it's not that safe on the outskirts (and the state is under a "Do Not Travel" advisory by the US goverment). I'll be very interested to check back in in a month or so & see if yo're still there & how you like it.

I read about the beauty of Ajijic before going there, and just as you mention, I was disappointed. This was years ago, the lake was high, polluted and full of weeds, with very little infrastructure in the town to enjoy the water or boating or fishing. And though the temps are sometimes lower than Guadalajara, where I now live, I think it's more humid from being in a valley with the lake, so it doesn't feel very fresh.
