This was a great video! My wife & I went to Mexico 1st time in 2021 during COVID. We loved it, but I was upset & angry that our media (movies, etc) painted Mexico & Mexican people with very different colors! The country & people are wonderful, so is the food! So... much beauty! We are retired & have a newer grandson from our youngest son. I so want to move around in Mexico, but don't think I will be able to convince my wife. Our lifestyle would be more enjoyable and affordable in Mexico & stress level would decrease 10X! I have had some health issues she is concerned about, but I need to live! Thank you!
Your videos couldn’t come at a better time. I’ve been telling my husband that I would love to go visit the interior of Mexico for a long time now. I’m a retired R.N., and my husband can retire anytime from his job. He’s fluent in Spanish. He picked up our Visa Applications yesterday. Looking forward to more of your beautiful videos. Hugs to your fur babies! 💜
I am very glad that I found your channel. For the last couple of years I was planning on retiring to the Philippines, put a couple of months ago a 9-month-old Great Dane boxer mix entered my life and I had to rethink my priorities. The logistics of moving to Mexico with a big dog is much simpler. And he will be part of my life for the next 10 or 15 years so I need to live accordingly. Your adventures in Mexico with your two big dogs has made me feel a lot better about this decision. Thank you
Awesome!! Im so glad you adopted that Great Dane. Yep...you have made the right decision. It is much easier to immigrate with a pet to Mexico for sure. Your gonna' love it there.
Your last statement about getting away from the expat tourist traps can’t be said enough. I’ve been to both. The expat tourist places are almost a “pretend” Mexico. Everybody chasing the tourist dollar. In the real Mexico, I feel that I actually blend in better even though I might be the only American in that small town. With the 10 Spanish words I know and google translator I don’t have any problems.
Thanks for your perspective. Especially about getting away from the "same 5 towns." I'm a country vs city person anyhow, not tolerant of crowds and noise. Now Mexico is much higher on my list of options when I bolt from Florida. Always enjoy seeing your dogs...
Loved your comment about getting beyond "the same 5 towns". My wife and I have been to Mexico 3 times, researching some extended time there in the future. Some of our favorite experiences have involved wandering through a small pueblo, hanging out for a while, getting something to eat, conversing with the locals, etc. I could never get tired of it.
If you ever get to Bonfil, just south of Acapulco, I will be your host. I love Mexico. I left my junk behind years ago and I live a simple life now in Mexico.
Another great video! I'm exploring places I didn't know existed by following your suggestions. Getting off the "tourist route" makes all the difference. Sometimes challenging, but always amazing. Thanks!
I plan to retire in 4.5 years and with $1,800 I think I can live comfortably in Mexico. I was born in Mexico and came to the U.S. when I was 4. I really enjoy your videos, the music and calm energy you exude. Your dogs are adore you.

Hope it all works out with your tenants; that's always a bit of a concern when you're nowhere near to solve issues that may come up.

Hi Mora! Wonderful information. I leave in 2 weeks for Tulum. Yes, I know it's a tourist spot now which breaks my heart but I invested in a condo there to be built 5 years ago....between covid and airport/train it has taken that long for my place to be built. I bought in to use as a rental at first but now I have decided to relocate there indefinitely. It's very scary to just pick up and go, I am lucky my son is going with me for a little while. We all love your videos! You are a treasure for sure. Yes this is encouraging. I know the costs are all over the place. You seem to find these really nice dwellings to stay in. Are you using just Air B&B to find your places to stay? Thanks
Thank you for your candid videos. They are fun to watch but also gives us hope to leave this rat race behind. I'm trying to convince hubby! haha Would love to know more about health care in Mexico - how good is it? Do you need an insurance policy?
Health care in Mexico can be world class good! Many foreigners come here for low cost health care. I, however, have not had much opportunity to sample the medical system (thankfully). I've only see a doctor once and got a prescription once and the cost was less than my co-pay just for an appointment in the States with insurance. I do have "global" health insurance for Mexico in case of emergency or accident, but I hope I never actually use it. Some people "self insure" meaning they save the money they would pay for insurance and use it to pay out of pocket if they need a doc or hospital. Thanks for watching!
I love Pátzcuaro! Enjoy, this is my 29th year in central Mexico it’s changed a lot but has every microclimate known to mankind, I concur, get outside of the hotspots and discover Mexico 🇲🇽, no place like it !
When I was considering moving back to Mexico late last year, Patzcuaro was my first choice. Then I joined an "expat" FB group & read about a rash of home robberies (of gringos) in the middle of the night while the occupants were sleeping, one man describing waking up and getting locked in the house with the robbers. Then I turned my attention towards Morelia, but my Mexican contacts tell me that it's not that safe on the outskirts (and the state is under a "Do Not Travel" advisory by the US goverment). I'll be very interested to check back in in a month or so & see if yo're still there & how you like it.
Hi Mora!! My husband and I love your videos! We recently relocated to Mexico (Lake Chapala) and are considering moving to Aguascalientes (AGS). Actually we would probably prefer Calvillo which is a smaller city in the state of Aguascalientes rather than the actual city of AGS. Have you thought of exploring that area?
I don’t have any plan to go there right now, but I have been curious about the area. Seems like a good climate and Aguascalientes is said to be a pretty town.
No. I found two houses I was interested in on Facebook group pages about expats in Morelia, and I got lucky that they were both still available when I got there. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks, but I don't have the equipment for shots like that. I sometimes use clips from others (with permission), and that's one of them. I shoot video on an old, and very battered, iPhone. I'm enjoying editing now that I've gotten a little faster at it.
@@MoraMargaret I can't imagine the crowds would be no where near what Oaxaca is during Dia de Los Muertos. Oaxaca is on steroids but with the most beautiful vibes. Can't wait to see all the beautiful Catrinas near the Catrina Capital Capula.😊
@@MoraMargaret I suggest not going where there are crowds. Don't go to Janitzio or Tzintzuntzan. Go to Eronga. And the towns near there in the direction towards Patzcuaro. Arocutin, Jaracuaro.
The whole Michoacan State is famous for their delicious Carnitas (Yum). Made me laugh about "...talking myself into eating the riny fried fish with big eyes..." 😂😂 Are they the ones called "Charales"?
Just found your channel - really enjoyed this video - I'm a RN who will be retiring in Feb of 2026 - quite a bit older than you but ready for a break free from the hustle & bustle of ambulatory care - my question is how did you find your casita? I dream of moving outside of the US - I love to travel & wouldn't mind settling down in Mexico - I'm quite frugal but didn't think one could live in Mexico on monthly costs that low.
Wow less than a grand is unbelievable for a month.......Great for You, but I definitely will be spending a lot more going out for dinner, coffee in the Morning and probably hitting "Happy Hours" around whatever city/town. Fortunately, I speak Spanish fluently so sometimes thankfully not treated as a Gringo. Can't believe You only pay $500.00 a month in rent. Even if You have to pay for utilities that is still probably only a 100 bucks. Happy for You and thanks for the truthful and insightful Videos.
Thank you. Even if you added $200 a month for eating out etc.. it's still much more affordable than where I came from. That's why I'm dancing at the end ;)
Hi I'm 60 and I'm about 6 months from doing what you just did. My biggest hang up his health care what you said you wouldn't mention in your budget. I've been doing some research and I find it to be about $300 a month for a pretty comprehensive coverage. Given the fact that I have permanent residency which gives me access to IMSS which covers everything from acute urgent care, to emergency services hospitalization, any type of emergencies such as cardiac, etc and including also as well diagnostics, specialist , medicine, hospitalization if necessary and routine care. Id have to pay for this, its about $1000 a year. My question to you is what are you doing for medical insurance if you don't mind me asking. I'm hesitant to pay $300 a month for Private health insurance when I'm entitled to a pretty decent plan through IMSS. Any insight would be appreciated. Enjoying your videos.
It's a complicated issue with quite a few options. I have global insurance specifically for Mexico and I'm paying about $130/month (ALC: Alex@worldexpathealth.com). I'm tempted to put that money into savings and "self insure" but it also includes evacuation in case of emergency etc.. I didn't know you need to pay for IMSS. I don't have any real advice, and the further I stay away from hospitals and insurance companies, the more I like it. I hope you find the perfect solution for you!
Thank you for your videos, Mora Margaret. I was in Patzcuaro a few weeks ago for the first time, for 3 days. I really liked it and could see living there. How did you find your casita?
Can you find out when the pottery festival is? I know they just had one in Urapuan. Hoping to find one closer to Morelia. Do a video with the Monarchs too. I'm an RN & go every year. Can't wait to be there like you.🥰🥰🥰
I can't wait to see the monarchs!! But they say the best time is in Jan-Feb. I know the Cantoya Fest (hot air balloons, crafts, traditions) was in May. The Copper fest was in August. But I don't know of a festival just for pottery. I will keep my ears out! When are you coming?
I'm planning to be there between 10/25-11/5. I might try to see the Monarchs again towards the end of January again. It would be awesome to find a rental near the Monarch reserve & stay, instead of having to do the long round trip from Morelia. LUCKY Ducky YOU.😁
Another wonderful and informative video! I plan to start out in Chapala area to get my feet wet. I’ve been along the west coast about 15 times in different locations. Mostly Matz & PV. A good friend from Seattle took me to his home town in Mexico City. I’ve come to love the colorful culture and the warm/friendly people. My Spainish is still beginner level but that doesn’t worry me. I’m just now gathering up all I need for my Consulate appointment so gettin excited for next April/May! ? How do you handle car insurance? ? Who are you using for Health Insurance? Unfortunately I haven’t looked on your site yet. If that info is there just let me know. Best to you, Ted & Chap in Seattle footprint 👣 🐾
Thank you! How exciting! Good luck with the consulate, I had a pretty easy time of it (in Portland). The car insurance... I'm probably doing it wrong. I have insurance in Mexico of course, and I still have insurance in Oregon. I'm concerned that if I give that up I'll have a problem renewing my car's registration. But honestly, I have not investigated the problem. I use ALC Health, Global for health insurance. I haven't had to use it. I can refer you to the guy if you like. Best to you too! I'm excited for you!
I was wondering about banking, etc. I have my checks auto-deposited in a US bank. How do you handle transactions when purchasing and renting in Mexico? I have traveled to Mexico over the years and I loved it. Thank You. LOVE your pups!
Thank you! Mexico is largely a cash society. I pay the rent and almost everything else in cash. I don’t have a Mexican bank account and I don’t think I want one. Use ATMs with accounts with low/no fees.
Moving to Mexico in January, this has been insightful. Where would you recommend to look for these long-term accommodation options?.Facebook groups? Also, do they ask for a deposit? Thank you!
Yes, Facebook groups are where I found both rentals that I considered. This is my first long term, so my one and only experience but it's gone very well. I gave a one month deposit. The other rental I considered also asked for a one month deposit so I guess that's standard around here. You didn't say where you'll move to but best of luck to you!
How does Lake Pátzcuaro look? I heard a drought has brought lake levels down. What activities are there around the lake? Any beaches? Parks? Love the dancing with the dogs!
What neighborhood of Paztcuaro do you live in? I love the weather there. I want to visit for a few weeks next year. Which neighborhood would you recommend after living there?
I can’t really recommend a neighborhood cause I’ve only been here a month and I live outside of town. It would be cool to live in centro and be able to walk everywhere 🙂
I visited Coatepec, Veracruz and it's a wonderful place. I think you would like that since it's a smaller town compared to Xalapa. I was wondering about the bugs, mainly mosquitos..is that an issue? The area looks very similar to where I live now about 30 mins south of Olympia. We do have mosquitos but mainly in the evening. When we went to Xalapa, we got bit by alot of mosquitos and other no-seeums. Very itchy. And is the house you rent now have a fenced yard or do your dogs just stay nearby? I have two big dogs and my dogs would probably want to wander and explore if the yard wasn't fenced. Thanks for your videos.
I've only seen 2 mosquitos here, but there is something biting me a bit. It is the rainy season so to be expected. The house has both a smaller fenced yard just for my dogs, and a much larger fenced yard for us and the neighbors, which we use every day. Got really lucky finding this place! I'd like to head towards Xalapa at some point and see that area.
If you want to be around other expats it narrows down the choices (and that's good because it's a big country!). If you like a big city people recommend Guadalajara. Smaller with a lot of foreigners: Lake Chapala area. If you have a lot of money and like the beach: Puerto Vallarta is beautiful. Merida has become popular in the last few years if you're attracted to the Caribbean. There's a little more detail in my "Top 6 FAQ" on my website if you like: MoraMargaret.com
O74, that number helps you of you run out of gas, flat tire, need ambulance, mechanic or anything like that. I guess I will start making videos about info in Mexico
I've taken down the number and I'm glad they are out there, but I'm not sure if they are on all the highways? and I've never seen them while I'm out driving so... I don't know.
Yes, Mexico has a lot of expats living under $2,000/month. To get residency in 2024, an expat needs to prove a $4,000/month deposit into a Mexican Bank Account. This is doable for most, however there is also an increase in monthly expenses as Mexico’s standard of living has improved quite well.
Just found your site on September 17th 2024. So enjoyed a couple of videos. How do you bank between the USA and Mexico? Thanks, live in Nevada: Nevada Jim
Hi Nevada Jim. I do what many other foreigners do and keep my bank account in the States. I use ATMs for cash and a debit/credit card for some things like Costco. I talked about it a little in "5 things I wish I knew before moving to Mexico". It's working out fine so far.
Hi! So, just curious: are you paying for Mexican Health insurance or US Health insurance? Also, do you think you’ll go back into nursing? I’m a nurse in Seattle and can’t wait to get out. I’m 18 years in. 😩 Did you sell everything and move to Mexico? Just fascinated by your life. Thank you! 😊
Gracias! I have "Global" health insurance specifically for Mexico. If I never go back to nursing I'll be very happy about that. 28 years was enough for me, and there are so many other fun things to do! Really, I was very unhappy and I'm glad to be out of there. I didn't sell EVERYTHING but did liquidate my household and just have what's in my car with me. Good luck ;)
I would love to find a small town that I could be in long term with weather that was cool at night (about 70 degrees). I am basically a homebody but I like to explore in spurts. Not into big crowds or loud places. One big concern is bedding and noise. How have you been able to deal with loud noise and hard beds? It seems to be a common theme, but is it a lie? . I spent 10 days in Panama in 2021 and the hard beds were the only real issue I had. I am learning Spanish.. very slowly. It would be easier with more face to face interactions. I work in healthcare so it's limited to that type of interactions at the moment. Hoping to semi retire next year. If I sell my house, it will be full retirement and travel.
Noise only bothered me when we were staying in an apartment right over a busy street. I don't mind dogs, chickens, music from a distance. As for beds, I've had some amazing beds at some of the airbnbs we've been to! My current bed is not that great though, so I got a memory foam for it. I hope you find the perfect place for you!
I spent a month in Patzquaro October 2023. I would not recommend it for someone who is not fluent in Spanish. The stores there lack quality food and variety. The market is fun for a visit or two. Expats were few and far between. Is it cheaper than some other towns which offer more culturally? Yes. Is it worth the savings? No. The drive there was beautiful though.
ok, that’s one way to look at it, but I don’t agree. The markets are amazing for all kinds of fresh food. The area is thick with cultural events. Some of us like it that there aren’t a sea of foreigners running around.
Hi Mora! Great video! Do you keep a mobile phone in the US? * I saw your comment about Airalo and I am Asking because when I retire in Mexico I know I will need to keep my USA number for 2 step verification (banking and such). Looking for a low cost option that will not cancel my account due to length of time outside of the US. Currently on unlimited plan with T-Mobile. For Mexico, I will just get an unlimited plan with Telcel (fast data, Google maps, calls, etc)
Thanks! When I left the States I switched my US number to Google Voice. Now I have the same number and use it for What's App and Voice and it works great.
I do trust there are many inner parts smaller cities of Mexico you can live well for low budget, but do you really feel safe in Michoacan ? especially because it is one of 6 states at the highest unsafe “Do Not Travel” level according to US State Travel Advisory: the 6 most unsafe states Do Not Travel To: Michoacan state due to crime and kidnapping. Sinaloa, Guerrero, Colima, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas…. most other touristy Mexican places are much safer but they became expensive, some cases more expensive than USA,,,
You driving around Mexico for a while, what's the worst crime experience you've encountered? All i hear about the country in the USA is crime and corruption. I enjoy your videos.
Thank you. The worst crime experience I've encountered was... nothing. Well, I do think I was ripped off at a gas station in the first week at Sayulita. But that's it. I've experienced much kindness from the Mexican people I've met. See "6 of the Best Things to Happen to Me Since I Moved to Mexico". There have bee a lot of good things!
Thanks again for another wonderful video! I was very curious if you were bilingual- and thanks for addressing that. I don’t have any plan to go there right now, but I have been curious about the area. Seems like a good climate and Aguascalientes is said to be a pretty town.
Thank you for this video. You look so happy, love you dancing with your pups. can you please tell me where this place is at 2:36 minutes?
Thanks for the video! It was very informative! Was it hard to find a long term rental in Patzcuaro?
No. I found two houses I was interested in on Facebook group pages about expats in Morelia, and I got lucky that they were both still available when I got there. Thanks for your comment!
Pátzcuaro de mis amores.
Mora, your videos and film editing are first rate. Do you do it all yourself? Love the shot of Lake Patzquaro from above.
Thanks, but I don't have the equipment for shots like that. I sometimes use clips from others (with permission), and that's one of them. I shoot video on an old, and very battered, iPhone. I'm enjoying editing now that I've gotten a little faster at it.
How did you find this lovely house? Would love to know what resources you utilize to research housing. Thank you for the great videos.
Gracias! Please see my latest video :)
I hope you can visit in the future Xalapa, Ver. And the towns around it.
That area has a very nice weather and there are also many Pueblos Mágicos.
I hope so too! I was going in that direction when I made an unplanned turn into Michoacan. But I really hope to get there in a few months.
Vet bills are so very low in Mexico too. Beautiful pups :)
Thank you!
Looking forward to being there in Dia de Los Muertos week.❤❤❤
Me too, but I'm scared of the crowds ;)
@@MoraMargaret I can't imagine the crowds would be no where near what Oaxaca is during Dia de Los Muertos. Oaxaca is on steroids but with the most beautiful vibes. Can't wait to see all the beautiful Catrinas near the Catrina Capital Capula.😊
Is the best for Nov 2nd
@@MoraMargaret I suggest not going where there are crowds. Don't go to Janitzio or Tzintzuntzan.
Go to Eronga. And the towns near there in the direction towards Patzcuaro. Arocutin, Jaracuaro.
Thanks for the tips. I really dread a throng of tourists so I'll prolly do what you said.
Thank you for another great video! What Mexican dish is your favorite? What food is something new you have tried? Do you lie spicy foods?
I do like spicy! I've had amazing carnitas since I've been here. I'm talking myself into eating the tiny fried fish with big eyes soon ;)
The whole Michoacan State is famous for their delicious Carnitas (Yum).
Made me laugh about "...talking myself into eating the riny fried fish with big eyes..."
😂😂
Are they the ones called "Charales"?
Just found your channel - really enjoyed this video - I'm a RN who will be retiring in Feb of 2026 - quite a bit older than you but ready for a break free from the hustle & bustle of ambulatory care - my question is how did you find your casita? I dream of moving outside of the US - I love to travel & wouldn't mind settling down in Mexico - I'm quite frugal but didn't think one could live in Mexico on monthly costs that low.
Found it on a Facebook group "Expats in Morelia". This is a low cost area to live in, especially compared to the famous resort areas.
In what town is this casita ?? 🤗😎🫶🏼🌎🇵🇦🇺🇸
sorry, but I don't reveal my location until I'm leaving. I hope you understand.
Thank you! I hope you keep talking about all of this. And, dog details are interesting to know. I applaud you for getting away from the tourist stops!
Muchas gracias!
I happened to see it in a Facebook group for expats in Morelia about a month before I got here. I was lucky that it was still available!
Mora are your plans to just travel Mexico or make it your home?
It is so beautiful, I admire your courage 👍
Gracias. I'm making it my home for the foreseeable future, but who knows?
Good for you, and thank you for taking me along.👋
Is that true?...😮😮Im going to try next month..❤😂
I have a 20 kg gas tank. I filled it in January and still haven't had to refill it (2 of us).
Sounds good but your gas is going to get old!
Good video, how much is your health insurance?
How does Lake Pátzcuaro look? I heard a drought has brought lake levels down.
What activities are there around the lake? Any beaches? Parks?
Love the dancing with the dogs!
Thanks! The lake is in recovery! I had heard it was really dry, but with all the recent rains it looks normal to me.
How safe is it ?
What neighborhood of Paztcuaro do you live in? I love the weather there. I want to visit for a few weeks next year. Which neighborhood would you recommend after living there?
I can’t really recommend a neighborhood cause I’ve only been here a month and I live outside of town. It would be cool to live in centro and be able to walk everywhere 🙂
Jesus! que poquito gastas y que bien vives Felicidades.
Muchas gracias. Me siento muy afortunada!
Enjoyed the video.
How did you find this casita for rent, I’m curious. :)
I found it in a Facebook group about living in Morelia. I got lucky it was still available when I was able to get to the area :)
I can live inexpensive in Canada, but it's not for me in the winter. I would love to find a decent place in Mexico. My Spanish would have to improve 💯
It’s doable!
@@MoraMargaret let me know which place is the best for a 60 year old man. I'm also interested in finding expats, so that would be nice as well.
PS I just checked on roadside assistance in Mexico, like AAA in US. They have Green Angels. Wonder is you've considered this?
O74, that number helps you of you run out of gas, flat tire, need ambulance, mechanic or anything like that. I guess I will start making videos about info in Mexico
I've taken down the number and I'm glad they are out there, but I'm not sure if they are on all the highways? and I've never seen them while I'm out driving so... I don't know.
Hello Mora me gusto su video soy su nueva suscriptora
Muchas gracias!
That's not correct. I don't have any income and I don't have a Mexican bank account.
@@MoraMargaret I thought that sounded weird. I have a relative with partial residency on $1100 a month.
Do you need a car where you are? Are there city busses? Or taxi's?
There are a lot of "combis", minivans that pick people up and go everywhere. Seems like I see one every 10 minutes and I'm sure they are cheap.
Your 'syle' is our style...
Which part of Mexico is the cheapest to live such as east or west and how safe is it compared to Canada or US?
What kind of insurance you have..new video about insurance please 🙏 🙏🙏
Does your private insurance cover your health while in Mexico?
Yes, it’s specifically for Mexico. I’ll have to talk about that in a future video.
👍👍
Which Costco did you shop at?
Morelia?
Yes, that’s the one.
Hi Mora!
Great video!
Do you keep a mobile phone in the US?
* I saw your comment about Airalo and I am
Asking because when I retire in Mexico I know I will need to keep my USA number for 2 step verification (banking and such).

Gracias Mora!!
Great info and
Beautiful dance!!
I do trust there are many inner parts smaller cities of Mexico you can live well for low budget, but do you really feel safe in Michoacan ? especially because it is one of 6 states at the highest unsafe “Do Not Travel” level according to US State Travel Advisory:
the 6 most unsafe states Do Not Travel To:
Michoacan state due to crime and kidnapping.
Sinaloa, Guerrero, Colima, Zacatecas, Tamaulipas…. most other touristy Mexican places are much safer but they became expensive, some cases more expensive than USA,,,
I talked about that in a previous video.
I hope to move to SMA next year-as a 'soft landing' and to be able to become more confident in my language skills. Then explore more traditional pueblos. Patzcuaro looks heavenly! Stay well and keep posting. Love your adventures!
Muchas gracias!
Might be possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Not everyone has a choice my friend.
