    Love this video concept! I usually soft DNF books, with the idea that I will eventually come back to them. My hard DNF’s are usually due to foul language or gratuitous imagery - the latter usually meaning sex scenes, although I have stopped the rare book due to graphic violence. The German fantasy book “Dwarves” had a scene that actually made me feel ill due to the too-well-described casual violence of a villain. The author was very good at making the scene come alive, in spite of the book being a translation from the original German. As I recall, I muscled my way through the rest of the book, but I didn’t read any of the other books in the series.

    The levels for Crime and Punishment vs Anna Karenina are interesting to me. The Classics Reading Lounge just read C&P last month and are reading AK this month. Multiple readers have mentioned how much more easily they can read AK, that it doesn't require as much thought as C&P. Which brings me back to the content - one might be analyzing deeper questions or presenting them in more thought provoking ways.

    Although some of the books that I read would be considered "fluff," I usually find value in them through how certain things are presented. Emotions are explored in the ones that I like and give me something to consider. It's not in the same way as some of the classics I read, but I usually learn something while I read no matter the type of book.

  • @CourtneyReads

    I've read several of the books you listed, and I wouldn't consider any of them particularly difficult. Where they become difficult is the depth of the content within some of them. I do think that attention span is a big part why people choose to read certain things. I have friends who don't read certain books because it requires more mental energy, particularly with classics and nonfiction.

    Hi, hello and what cool posters! We were listening to a Ken Jennings podcast on our way to the mountains and they got to talking about how there are a few father/son combos in the olden bridge building days so I had a chuckle when you brought this one up! Very strange and specific nepotism there lol Thanks for sharing and hope it's a good one!

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots 2 дня назад

      Hi, hello, that's interesting you were listening to a podcast (edited, because I put audiobook in the first comment), about father/son combos on old bridge buildings. I am not sure if it was so much nepostism as the sons were apprenticed and in the company. 🤷‍♀️❓ The father John R was an immigrant and he was an entrepreneur, creating his companies; engineering and a manufacturing of the suspension twisted wire cables. His son was part of the company, but he had also been in the civil war as a civil engineer. Based on the very small information I have it doesn't sound like nepotism. I'm sure if that was the case McCullough will reveal it. 😁 Hope your week is going well. btw, you and my son have encouraged me to get back to working out and I walked with 25 pounds yesterday. My son is doing 50 pounds. I'll get there. =) So thank you for sharing your hiking videos. =)

    • @holt_arr
      @holt_arr 2 дня назад

      Glad to be of encouragement! 25lbs though lol that would put me on the couch for a whole week! And I suppose nepotism was the wrong word but yeah they were just having a go with some obscure trivia. The podcast was a lot funnier than I was. It was a whole episode around London Bridge and its many different versions over the years. One of the previous London bridges was rebuilt in Lake Havasu City, Arizona!

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots 2 дня назад

      @@holt_arr LOL I only did 10 minutes. It wasn't that impressive. I'm considering getting a German Shepherd for a guard dog, and I know they're hyper-engergetic, so I need to get myself in good shape. I think you're on the right track with nepotism. I mean, we just saw it a certain man's son who got a job with a foreign company when he had zero experience. Wow, that is really interesting about one of the London briges's being rebuilt, rebuilt?! in Lake Havasu, AZ. My parents and brother used to vacation there. What was the reason for that? McCullough did a very good job of making the topic one of human interest vs a dry recital of death and destruction. Natural disasters (whether depicted in movies or books) aren't generally my favorite topic for consumption, but McCullough makes his book about the *people.* I find your description of the book having the feel of someone's grandfather telling a story to be very apt, possibly because of the way McCullough went about gathering his information (like you said: if you know, you know 🙃). I'm so glad that you and @Eldertalk chose to put on the readalong; I probably would have never sought out a book on this topic on my own. Slightly off-topic, but the Johnstown Flood makes me think of this: have you ever heard of the Great Boston Molasses Flood of 1919? I was searching putting Stephen Puleo books on my Libby tbr, when I came upon his book on the topic called "Dark Tide". There apparently isn't a ton written on the topic, and my parents, who spent most of their courtship in that part of Boston, had never heard of the Molasses Flood. I intend on reading that book at some point, and am interested in seeing if Puleo tackles this topic in a simliar way to how McCullough approached the Johnstown Flood.

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots 2 дня назад

      Yes! I'm in agreement about the book, the way McCullough wrote it and made it interesting and makes the reader care. It's not a book I was in a big hurry to pick up, but with the readalong it seemed easier to consume. And also YES! on the Boston Molasses flood. I know about that because of the Mythbusters show. My son liked their science and since we home educated a lot of it was educational in an interesting way, because they had to find what worked and what didn't work. They did a molasses swim experiment. Wow, that really surprises me that your parents lived in that area of Boston and hadn't heard about it. I'm going to look up the book Dark Tide now. Thank you for sharing.

    I tried reading Crime & Punishment right after my home burned four years ago and it gave me murder nightmares - probably because I was already traumatized from losing my home. I think Wives & Daughters would be worth reading. (If only I had time.)

    I love Dostoevsky, but I haven't read that one yet. A friend says he's depressing. What does that say about me? She probably considers me a depressing person. I don't know. I love all his side stories. I'm still in Dickens' Pickwick Papers...hilarious! It could be me and my husband. Because I wanted to try the 30 books in 30 days, I habe a bunch of smaller books from the public library that I know nothing about, except they are short. I have found some gems that way in the past. Love your entrance. And yes, I definitely recommend not rushing through Godel, Escher, Bach; there are a series of exercises (the MIU ones and others) that are attempts to help you have a kind of 'eureka' moment. Unfortunately, that makes the opening chapters feel like a textbook, but it ends up scaffolding for grander discussions, so it feels worthwhile in my view. I found the book Power, Faith, and Fantasy used just the other day!-Seems like a great subject. How is it so far?

      Ah! Okay. Thank you for letting me know about the exercises and the 'eureka' moments connected to that. I think I will start it this month then and ruminate on the book's content. Powers, Faith, and Fantasy is reminding me of White Gold by Giles Milton, and I am not a big fan of re-reading books so I'm struggling to get passed the part I am already aware of. I'll push past it and I'm sure it will be amazing. I like the writing and if I hadn't read White Gold the book would be intriguing. Thank you for dropping in and helping me with the Godel book. 👍

By the way, I was watching ReadingIDEAS' new video and sure enough your long comment was missing except through 'sort by.' The book banning issue has me ruminating this morning, but I'm trying to put it aside as I don't need to be upset about anything. This is the kind of thing that makes me want to read Perestroika in Paris! Life needs levity and occasional flights of fancy bordering on full-on fantasy. Well, the book banning issue is fantasy and a major over-reaction but I truly believe that parents who don't want their children exposed to sex books in school should just accept the fact that this is possible, and choose to homeschool, where kids won't have their innocence destroyed by crusading educators.

      I'm not at all surprised youtube shadowbanned my comment. They are acting like brownshirts. It's so ridiculous. they've actually deleted my responsed to comments from my own channel. Nothing political, just talking books. smh Did Perestroika in Paris get better? I think it matters where the gov public institution is located, because some librarians do a really good job keeping the content clean/age appropriate for the students. But if you have someone pushing the agenda as the librarian, then yes, the students should be homeschooled or put in a Christian private school. I tried to have a conversation about The Satanic Verses being banned because Muslims aren't allowed to read that, but if it's available at school that's a problem. No one talked about it. I guess that's better than them talking out their rear. =/ The sex books are absolutely vile. Even TV even safe. We just need to go back to the vile activities of the olympics. 😬 Families were watching it. Gotta keep the kids in the proverbial greenhouse before they're prepared for the transplant. But I can say, even the people pushing these vile agendas need their "safe spaces" because they're mentally unhinged and/or on a lot are on recreational or prescribed pharmaceuticals and lack cognitive thinking skills. But back to books. some of the new books have skipped the tbr and one I'm focusing on now is really good! I'll have to buy more of the author's books or request the library to buy his books. =)
