    Very few, or actually, no one, believes me when I tell them that our local hospital has the most delicious food! See, Even you don't believe it! My wife works at the hospital and she brings me a serving of whatever is on the daily menu and I am telling you the truth that it is so good! I know, it's hard to believe but it's for real. Red beans and rice, chicken and dumplings, hamburger steak, crawfish etouffee! Oh man, ..wait! Why am I fat!?. I get a plate every evening. Maybe I should wish that it was like other hospital food? But joking aside, the food there is delicious. . Thank you for sharing. -James & Bella!

      Wow, I had no idea there were hospitals that truly served real food. I believe you, but I'm gobsmacked! I remember jello and powdered scrambled "eggs" being served. I don't remember any read food. It was just absolutely vile. I wasn't even eating healthy back then. I can only imagine if they tried serving that garbage to me today. And then they have the audacity to charge you for it.
      Thank you for dropping in and sharing the good news.

      @@BookZealots.Now to be transparent, the hospital has a pretty good size kitchen and they have a good size dining area for employees and the public. And actually the food served at the dining area is more cafe style. Probably not the same food that they serve patients? And my wife gets an employee discount so it taste good and is cheap! Take care -James & Bella

    If you crave healthy foods when you you living a healthy lifestyle it is because your body intuitively knows what minerals it is deficient in. Intuitive eating, if done right, is also seasonal. The body is amazing.

    • @BookZealots

      I agree with you. And eats seasonally? I am not a fall season eater. LOL Most of the foods that are fall foods I don't like or am allergic to. I do not like sweet potatoes for instance. Oh I do like Pears! Yes please. I can tolerate brussel sprouts if they're done right or have a good sauce. hate beets, (my husband loves them), kale (only pulverized in a green juics), parsnips. LOL
      Autumn is NOT my season. 🤣 Do you have a season like that?

      @BookZealots I grew up in a market garden. LOL I had to eat everything, but I loved everything so that was okay with me. We didn't grow our own sweet potatoes so the only time we had them was Thanksgiving in a casserole covered in marshmallows. BLECH! Probably the most unhealthy foods we ate all year. It wasn't until I was an adult and started baking them like a regular potatoe that I realized how much I love them. Rutabega are best raw, cut julienned in a tarragon dressing. Parsnips roasted with or under a roasting chicken. Brussel sprouts with bacon. Ohhh, homemade sourkrout. I need to make more of that. That's great for your guts too and delicious. Yesterday in my giant monalogue I didn't even mention all the benefits of fermented foods. I can talk a lot about food. Have you noticed? :D

      @@Fernie4243 What is a market garden? Oh your parents would have been very frustrated with me. I know my parents were. LOL As it turned out, most of the food I hated as a kid, I found out, as an adult, I was allergic to. (except texture of slimy spinach) and the realization that my parents were really back cooks. I didn't like split pea soup, but as it turned out, I didn't like the way my parents made it. Am I the only one in the world who doesn't like brussel sprouts in bacon? when I can afford bacon again, I'll do another test.
      I had a really hard time reading your comment. It initiated the gag reflex. Just readinig about and thinking of sauerkraut made me gag. When my grandmother made it made, I stayed outside. I don't do well with fermented foods. I can sometimes eat pickles, but they have to be dill, not sweet, and only if I'm craving it. I have heard about all the benefits of fermented foods. My body says otherwise.
      Do you watch Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, MD? I really like his videos.

      @BookZealots we had several acres of vegetable gardens, several of fruit bushes, 5 acres of potatoes and 8-10 of grain. It was a working market people could come and mom would pick whatever people wanted right with them there. A lot of the fruit was you-pick and everyone would bring their own buckets.
      I'm so sorry I made you gag! 😭 My husband is a picky eater and I make him gag too, though he is getting somewhat better. When I met him he would puck up a Starbucks on his way to work in the morning and then wonder why he was feeling hungry at 10:00 that night, realize he didn't eat all day and run to McDonald's for some nuggets and a coke. Talk about opposites.

      @@Fernie4243 First, that sounds like a really cool childhood! How awesome. I only started liking blackberries as an adult, but boysenberries are my favorite. I tolerate blueberries. Bananas have to be just barely green anymore. I suppose I'm picky right along with your husband, but without the fast food. LOL Prometheus has never had mcd's. He doesn't drink soda either. He accidentally sipped his sister's and HATED it. Thank goodness.
      but yes, you and your husband are opposites. That's funny.

    What I crave is real food. Since I live alone and have nobody but myself to cook for I can get into a habit of taking shortcuts and not preparing a full meal for myself. But then I'll rebel and demand real food - a full meal cooked by me, not by Lean Cuisine, for example. Now, there's not much wrong with Lean Cuisine and the frozen boxes are good for portion control and knowing exactly how many calories you're getting, but I don't like eating them all the time. And I agree with James that some hospitals have good food. The hospital closest to me has fine food, usually. I think your hospital needed a new cook!

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots  3 дня назад +1

      Ha, I think our Cali hospital needed new food. I was even eating junk food back then and didn't eat the food they served.
      I have heard it's challenging to cook for one. Boxed meals are probably "good" in a pinch, but not for a regular diet. I'm curious enough to go check out the ingredients and nutritional break down.
      Yes! Like you, I crave real food. Many don't though. Most people crave junk food. There's a doctor I follow and he is hardcore and recommends one ingredient foods. 😂 Obviously those ingredients can be put together, but like I said, he's hardcore. I might mention him in another video.
      Was it hard to figure out how to cook for one when all of your children left the home?

    • @Eldertalk
      @Eldertalk 3 дня назад +1

      @@BookZealots Yes, it was hard to adjust to cooking for one. I still make too much food but then store leftovers in the fridge for lunches the next day or two. Reminds me - I have something there now... tofu in an amazing sauce, and mushrooms. It was so good I can't wait for dinner to eat more. I bought a jar of the sauce at Raley's in Yreka.. and tried it last night for the first time. I usually have a spinach salad along with whatever is in the Lean Cuisine box. Checking the fridge: The "amazing sauce" is Romesco by Rhonda... it has almonds, red peppers, olive oil, tomatoes and spices. BTW... my power company is driving me crazy today with loud noises; they are replacing the wood power poles on my street with metal ones. Probably a good idea in case they ever cause another fire.

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots  3 дня назад +1

      @@Eldertalk Oh my goodness, your mention of tofu made me think of the tofu "chicken" nuggets I used to get at Whole foods. They used to be good, but then they started to not be that good and we stopped buying them. We live too far away and they're too expensive anyway, but... maybe I should make some homemade. Look what you did. LOL
      Glad to hear you found a sauceyou really like. Awesome.
      metal poles? Metal melts. Wires melt. what are they doing? oh, unless it was the "spark" from the wires that caused the pole to catch fire and then spread? Oh but I thought that was a conspiracy?

    • @Eldertalk
      @Eldertalk 3 дня назад +1

      @@BookZealots Maybe it is some fire and heat resistant metal they use for the poles. I should ask. The fire was caused by a tree falling on an electric line during a windstorm. They were found liable as they had a responsibility to keep all nearby trees cut back enough to not let that happen.

    Hi, hello and that soup looks so good! I checked out the recipe and saw it needs a coconut milk or cream sauce though and I just can't do those. I wonder if just more stock would work or be just fine without it? Oh and do you grow your veggies? I really really wanna try to figure out tomatoes this year and grow more than just a handful over the season. Thanks for sharing and see ya on the next one!

    • @BookZealots
      @BookZealots  2 дня назад

      are you lactose intolerant? I am and don't have any issues with coconut milk. But if you just hate it or are allergic to coconut, a soup stock would be totally fine. I wasn't able to grow anything last year because of the cold/cooler temps we had in the summer time. We've had a really hard time, in the best of temps growing a garden in this area. We had one great garden and that was when I paid way too much money for mulch and I can't find anyone else to buy it from. If you have good soil, I totally suggest trying it. I've been told by a local to use epsom salt to help with the tomatoes. I haven't had a chance to try it yet. We also have the annoying horned worms that eat my tomatoes before I can pluck the fruit. =(

    • @holt_arr
      @holt_arr 2 дня назад +1

      I appreciate that! I'll definitely give it a go soon especially if it's gonna keep getting colder I'm nit lactose intolerant but I really just don't like it, too bitter for my tastes
      I got a little bag kit of tomato's I've been meaning to try and just need to get some of that fancy bagged soil for it. We did grow a few tomatoes in the standing garden and it's nice to pop some fresh herbs in too

      @@holt_arr Was that the garden Jill had jumped onto? I forgot to mention how cool that was, because there's no leaning over or having to be on your knees. We've had good success with basil and oregano. (the oregano has returned ... I think twice now. Hopefully it'll return next year as well.
      Now you know, you'll have to show your garden when you get it going. 👨‍🌾🍅
