Toronto Gauge: The TTC's Unique Distance Between Rails
Toronto's streetcar and subway tracks are set farther apart than the standard gauge used by most railroads. What's the story? Well, it goes back to the earliest days of streetcars in Toronto, so let's take a trip through history and find out! We'll also find out why the Scarborough RT and the new LRT lines don't use Toronto gauge.

Prince Edward Viaduct - built for the future!
1:45 I'd fully expect these fake houses to turn into crackhouses or methlabs now that everyone knows they're fake 🤣🤣
I'm from BC and we had one of these on my street as a kid, which was built in the 70s. We figured out one Halloween that it was cleverly designed to have the only access be through the (oddly large) garage door. No front door - a gate in front of the "porch" obscured that fact. They serviced all the utilities from that big shed-style house and you'd never have known just walking by. We also have one near me now, that looks a bit more obvious thanks to an addition now, but used to look just like a house.
Very nice. Thanks.
There’s a fake house in Oakville that I pass by all the time. It has a high voltage sign on the door, I assume it’s also for electrical. It’s a very interesting concept … and it makes total sense!
I remember seeing a fake Hydro house when I was attending high school in East York in the late 90's. The house was on a corner of a residential street so from the front, it looked like a normal tiny house but from the other direction, you could see the rear of the house and all the electrical transformers.
thats awesome and thoughtful too ... no expense spared - brick too ... cute. will def be turned into a crack air bnb afer they get rid of them too bad .. should be a historic protection the big Sub Stations are Gorgeous/Super cool. Yeah don't be in Alberta with the little kiddies now calling WATER ... HYDRO when referring to rental costs......
i repect how the city uses these houses, keeping aesthetic integrity while still utilizing them for actual needs
Please don't tell anyone how I live.
Great video. I always wondered if the building on the east side of Leslie at the 401 was a fake substation house.
You missed Forest Hill
"Several years"...lol! you gotta have a sensayuma if you live in Turranna...
My grandparents had one of these on their street out in Oakville.
I remeber driving by the Don as a kid in the 80's, my grandfather who grew up in the city would tell me how he would swim in the Don in the teens and early 1920's before it got so polluted. I had a hard time believing him as I looked at the electric green colour of the water. Love these vids my friend.
We have them in Hamilton as well. 2 blocks from me.
I was about to comment that we have so many in Scarborough, until the Brimley section came up!
In this video I promised an upcoming video on Toronto gauge - the TTC's unique track gauge (the distance between the tracks). Well, keep your eyes peeled - it'll be released by the end of July!
Cool video! In Victoria, they tend to instead paint the substations to match the surrounding area exactly (sometimes with a print), such that they are camouflaged. We have fake houses, but its to have a consistent skyline
And you're not really a veteran of the TTC trolley cars and trolley buses unless you can remember coming to a stop in the middle of the road necessitating the driver getting out and pulling on the rope at the back of the vehicle connected to the trolley pole so they could put the wayward trolley pole back on the wire to get power to resume their route. Oh, and the small shower of sparks sometimes released when crossing another trolley line. Love the nostalgia I get from these videos.
Can you tell me, which direction is your camera is facing during your beare hill segment? 5:28 … looks like a nice spot for possibly viewing the sunset
Toward downtown - it's hard to see as it's far off in the distance, but the CN Tower is actually in the background to the right of centre.
@@notsmoothsteve right on, thank you
The Leslie spit site contains lead sludge from a battery facility near Bathurst street, truck loads were dumped into Lake Ontario around 1967, so if records were kept of the progress of the operation, the location of the lead deposits could be found ,i often wondered how this was ever allowed -the lead content was so low ,the scrap yards on cherry street would only pay about five cents a pound, and after a load or two would turn you away and you would have to go to the next scrap yard down the street, after a while none of the scrap yards would take this crap as they realized they may not be able to get rid of it,so our little business venture came to an end-and the sludge continued to be dumped into the lake---so much for the environment--lets hear your comments about this--
What? Women need to use the washroom? What are you talking about
the last one ... lol. k
Theres another on Midland/Ellesmere and Midland and Danforth! Lots in Scarborough!
We used to go on field trips there. Very nice. Border Town Canada: ruclips.net/video/uQhJukSbEZE/видео.html
I've lived near here for years and had no idea, this is fascinating.
Also, the bottom of the Scarborough Bluffs was used to dump excavation material from digging the Bloor line.
Always interesting and informative!
I love your videos on Toronto you should do one on the ww1 tunnels in Lindsay Ontario there really neat they go all through the town and there was a boom factory here too
Not to be overlooked (pun fully intended) is the Black Creek dump (ex-Smythe Gravel pits) either side of Jane Street just north of and including Woolner Ave. The area was teaming with rats and used condoms floating down the creek up until the late Sixties.
The Beare landfill used to have torches to burn off the methane gas. As a teenager we used to drive there at night just to watch them. It was such a strange sight, dozens and dozens of flames all across the hills
A city of trash built on trash. Worst city in Canada.
Fascinating
"This is not the house your looking for" you already hooked right there with them jedi mind tricks lmao
toronto is full of trash more and more everyday they just keep coming
So this is all leaching chemicals to the rivers and lakes, and then we drink the water from the lake. Wow.
FOUR DOZEN landfills along the river?! Does not surprise me but is quite shocking none the less.... its so funny that we burry our trash AND burry our treasures...then pretend we didn't do either. I dug this video!!
Those posts venting methane could catch fire some day,,,never put it out. Hmmmm
Pollution Probe operating out of the former police station number nine on Pape Avenue in the late nineties identified over 300 dumpsites in Riverdale alone. When I dug out my basement and back yard on Logan Avenue south of Eastern I discovered a series of holes where resdents burned their garbage until the hole filled with unburnables and a new hole was dug
yes, Canaduh has more buried garbage, human or otherwise, than anywhere.
I used to live very close to the Brimley Houses and they did very weird whenever I was waiting for a bus and I told my friends that that house is spooky and something is definitely not right about it...I mean electrified fence next to a school for what seems to be a small house? Glad it wasn't unsubstantiated!
Well presented video, the theme also applies to every city on the planet.
I’m 65 years old, and I can remember seeing garbage trucks dumping loads at both Sun Valley and on Eglinton and Leslie as a child when in the car with my dad. Another site I remember was on Donlands avenue, half way between O’Connor and the Millwood (Leaside) bridge.
Westminister ponds in London (ON), known locally as Pond Mills, along with some kettle lakes north northeast & just outside of St. Mary's are local geological oddities, like Elora or the escarpment & Hamilton in general, although they are still just small ponds. -also: could you teach us aboot the history Bruce poewr plant?
can't wait for the swap of one of these scenes shot with a green screen & man in t-shirt conspicuously levitates and floats away, or gets smaller very slowly...
Dude how TF am I just finding your channel. This is the Toronto content I NEEED
Nice video, historical photos throughout would have been a nice touch.
These video's are neat, I would love to see some done for nearby Hamilton.
Nothing is nearby when it's on the other side of Toronto traffic :-( I have one Hamilton idea that I might do in future, and who knows, there may be others.
Same thing in peterborough. An hour and a half away
Most of Mississauga is also built on top of landfills....central Canada, the land that garbage built.....
Another triumph, Smooth Steve. There....I fixed it for you.
