@@KardiFan2000 it makes no sense given there’s so much space in the outer boroughs to put elevated guideways for light rail. If Vancouver can do it through most of its outer boroughs, so can Toronto.
I really hope they reconsider as it’s just not economical. We are right now building tunnels in Scarbourough, when it could be above ground (on the old Line 3 right of way) and soon likely on the border of York Region again, if there’s another Line 1 extension. I want more transit, which is why we need to be sensible about what the most cost effective option is.
Tunneling costs 2x as much, on average, as elevated guideways. Ergo, we could build a whole other transit line/extension (perhaps an extension of Line 4 west to Sheppard West & east, elevated to STC or Sheppard/Mc Cowan), with the money saved.

In 1954 Toronto opened its first subway line. It ran completely underground with 12 stations and 7.4 km of heavy rail track. It took about 4.5 years to complete at a cost of about $104 million per km of track (in today's dollars)
In 2024 Toronto is expected to open the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Its got 25 stops and is a total of 19 km of light rail track running both underground and above ground. It began construction in August 2011 and here we are 12.5 years later and its still not operational. It has cost about $12.8 billion to build that works out to about $674 million per km of track.
Despite having higher expertise, better technology and more manpower we got 1.52 km of track built per year compared to 1.64 km of track per year almost 7 decades ago. That works out to be about 8% less efficient.
So to sum up - 8% less efficient and 6.7 times more costly in 2024 for LRT compared to 1954 HRT. Perhaps not a completely oranges to oranges comparison but c'mon is this what we call progress? Shameful.

It went from $3 billion to $8.4 billion. Legault took one look at that price increase and spit out a lot more than his coffee. Then perhaps wisely handed the impending disaster to the CDPQ, who when they go over budget at least don't go nearly triple the cost. And you get the first part of the transit line built and more-or-less working in five years.

Quebec City has a major challenge that Toronto does not face, being significant elevation differences between the upper and lower portions. That’s a big hurdle to overcome. In fact, it’s one of the reasons the Eglinton LRT is partly above ground. To go fully underground would require a tunnel well below the Don River and then up the other side again. These trains are not climbers, so the entire line would need a different (more expensive still) engineering design.

  • @irkhanbasc

Great video. Unfortunately, this is how transit gets built in Toronto. Too much politics, from multiple levels of government, leading to funding challenges and delays, and meanwhile average people who need to get around affordably and efficiently have to make do as best they can while listening to politicians make promises after promises. Eventually, things get built, but by then, it’s years and even decades too late. The Eglinton LRT was needed yesterday.

I worked on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. I started in March of 2021 and was laid off November 2021.
In the start I was just pulling comm wire station to station and installing this thing called a TRA (I even saw a one in the video but I did not install that one, I did the underground ones not outdoor). Then later on they moved me to pulling 500s in the stations.
Work was okay but the site conditions where terrible. When I was doing the 500s they wanted them done as soon as possible so they offered overtime. We worked 6 days a week 12 hour days. Money was okay I guess.
The company I was working for was a joke, we needed ladders to do some of our work but they did not give us any so we had to bum other contractors ladders. I don't understand how a company can make millions but they cant seem to give the guys working the proper things to do the job right. Its not like a ladder costs a lot of money. I asked for one more then once... but eh why should they get us one, are you kidding me? That's like a thousand dollars! But I guess they can pay me a thousand dollars to just look for ladders to steal off others working on site.

LRT is a broad classification literally meaning light rail transit. Streetcars (also known as trams or trolleys) are a type of LRT that run in mixed vehicle lanes. The Spadina and St Clair lines really aren't streetcars at all, even though they use the same vehicles.

Eglinton is practically a by product of the cancelled Eglinton West Subway, being downgraded to light rail. With the sections west of Laird practically an actual subway, east of Sunnybrook Park (except at Science Centre) is full on light rail.
To be honest Sunnybrook park station is useless in having to go above after laird and go underground again at Science Centre. Big choke point when it does open and carry more people.
These are practically like those “pre-metro” systems you see in Europe; almost having a metro like service but becomes a tram service in above areas.

Transit priority? (insert laugh track here) Toronto will likely prioritize the single-occupant auto over the 200+ to 300+ people onboard a light rail train. At intersection, like on streetcar right-of-ways, left turning single-occupant pickup truck move left before transit vehicles. Some cities (not Toronto... for now) use crossing gates at left turn lanes to force left turners to wait till the light rail vehicles passes them.
Also while other cities use transit specific traffic signals, Toronto will likely use regular traffic signals with English verbage signage to add to the clutter. Not good for those who don't read English, and are used to transit specific signal outside of Canada.

Work on the Eglinton Crosstown LRT began in 2011. Its completion and opening have been delayed several times. It was supposed to have opened in 2020, and you guessed it, COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic by the WHO in March of that year.
Another rail line which work began in 2011 was the Union-Pearson Express, which links Union Station with Pearson Airport, with stations at Bloor Street (adjacent to Dundas West station) and Weston. It had priority (over Eglinton Crosstown), because, you guessed it right the PanAm and ParapanAm Games in Toronto in 2015.
Presiding over these projects was a Venezuelan immigrant named Andres Izquierdo, an engineer.
One of the countries represented at the PanAms and ParapanAms was Venezuela.

Why all the delays with the project millions and millions over budget?
Like other things in life, just follow the money.
So, when will the Eglinton Crosstown FINALLY open?

It is a shame that projects like this one lack transparency when it comes to explaining the types of problems they are experiencing so people could better understand the delays. Of it it just the inflow of cash that is too slow to allow quick completion of work remaining *as s often the case for govt funded project where they promise $1b but only at $100 per year so project takes 10 million years to complete.

They've been doing testing, on and off, for a couple of years now along at least some of the eastern surface section, and it's been pretty much every weekday for a few months other than a break over the holidays.

Got a notice in the mail recently that they want to try and do the exact same thing in another part of Scarborough with the Eglington East LRT connection. Living here and going to Eglington during construction almost a decade ago I'm utterly against this despite my undying support for better public transport. Something has got to give here. With the level of mismangement for the Crosstown I have no faith that any organization will be able to do this without massive delays, numerous wasted tax payer dollars and what'll amount to being a multi-year construction nightmare for me and other residents in the immediate construction area. Furthermore I can't help but feel a rather sinister aspect to this with this expansion potentially coming at the cost of even more condo development and gentrification to a vulnerable section of the city (numerous public housing projects along the path)

I live in Ottawa, so we got a very delayed but also very rushed system that's half-baked and breaks down regularly. Well done, Ottawa.

I think the Eglinton Crosstown will eventually be life changing for a lot of people across the city, but I hope the debacle of the construction process puts to rest the notion that P3 projects ("public private partnerships") are an efficient or effective way to build necessary infrastructure.

Hmmm. A total theme on Scarborough getting shafted. Central and western Toronto gets their train buried, loss of SRT, new Scarb subway routes so watered down. Sheppard line axed. The OG transit plan had so much promise. Yes, it’s transit but left to feel like the proverbial red headed step child on all fronts

Would you say that the underground LRT was a wise choice? What were the alternatives?

    • @notsmoothsteve
      @notsmoothsteve  5 месяцев назад

I'm not going to comment on the wisdom - that's a topic that would likely stir up arguments and name-calling, and I don't want my comments section to be like that.
I can tell you the rationale they gave for why they did it this way, though. The eastern above-ground section mostly runs through areas that could be characterized as post-war suburbs, where the street is quite wide (usually 3 lanes in each direction) and most buildings are set well back from the street, so there's room to put a dedicated right of way down the middle of the street and not have to deal with the much higher costs of tunnelling and building underground stations (which are also typically a bit farther apart than surface stops, making the line a bit less convenient for users). The section that's below ground mostly runs through older areas where the street is narrower (often 2 lanes per direction) and buildings are much closer to the street, so a dedicated ROW would leave just one lane in each direction on a major arterial road.

As a newbie to Canada, it is saddening to see almost the same level of corruption as some of the countries most immigrants come from. Hopefully it gets done soon so all citizens can make good use of it.

If they had designed, it for full ATC on the entire line they wouldn't have to worry about the operators having to get out and switch ends! Oh but wait, there is that one intersection that for some reason we are unable to use ATC because it would inconvenience automotive traffic having to obey an ATC signal. Yup, favor the car over the transit. That is the Toronto way!

What they are not telling you about the LRT is that it has over a thousand safety deficiencies and just one can shut the line down. This is how faulty the line is when it was built. Even after it's up and running , I wouldn't be too quick to jump on it right away knowing how many let's just say oversights it has.
