Our Van Plan
Великобритания
Добавлен 16 янв 2021
We had a plan, bought a van and are now in the process of our first self-build campervan conversion! We're converting our Fiat Ducato L2H2 panel van into the campervan of our dreams... during winter, in a national lockdown and with no previous experience. This channel is a place for us to document our journey, share what we're up to with friends and family and hopefully to provide some interesting content for people who are doing the same! Please email us or comment on the videos if you'd like to see anything in particular. Thanks for watching! Mark & Neil :)

LAUTERBRUNNEN by CAMPERVAN | VANLIFE Switzerland
This is Part 2 of my Switzerland trip in my self-built Fiat Ducato campervan. I have a quick pit stop in Lucerne where I walk around the city centre and across the famous Spreuerbrücke wooden bridge. There was easy camper van parking nearby and the city had a nice feel to it so will add that to our list to re-visit!
After Lucerne I headed to Lauterbrunnen and stayed at Camping Jungfrau for a few nights. The campsite was amazing - located in the valley with mountains all around. It's quite a large site but didn't feel too crowded even though it was a bank holiday weekend. The facilities were great and there is so much to do in the area. Just an hours walk along the valley is the 4 cable car...

We finally got round to starting one of the bigger jobs in our van - installing our underslung water tanks. We decided to go for the CAK water tanks that are designed to fit snuggly under the van and make use of some of the recesses in the chassis. Do u have a link to the wood filler oh brilliant videos
Very nice conversion. Very nice I'm widower. So obviously on my own Thinking changing my Renault trafic 2019 lwb premier edition that I've converted To one same as yours. Layout I think would be ideal for me. But not sure about bed size. As I would want to put my ebike under the bed. Suppose I could store it width ways though. Imagine you shower then at campsites. Which is what I would do. And same with toilet. Only use porta Potti for emergency. Have a pee bottle for nighttime
What size profile did you use?
It’s 40mm
Thanks👍🏼
Great videos, thanks. And thanks for using what3words. They are super useful.
Looks ideal for me! You say it's a full size bed but what does that mean in practice? what are the measurements?
It’s basically a UK double bed. 135cm wide and about 180cm long.
What blades did you use in the jigsaw ?
Can’t remember to be honest. Just normal ones from wickes. Think I mainly used multi purpose ones
*H7* Good video! Thanks for sharing!!!I love how OSRAM saying 150% brighter than what? Regular candle or what is as a comparison bulb? Osram is a total scam. They scamming everyone- do you know what LED road legal means? LED with lowered brightness to be as a halogen bulb. Actually I reallly think that my halogen brighter than their road legal LED. Never ever will buy anything from them. And by the way… I don’t see a much 150% difference in your before and after. Do you???
Hello out of interest how tall are you? Deciding between an h2 or h3… great video thanks a lot!
We’re both just over 6ft tall. Definitely couldn’t live without the height we have 👍
Brill thanks a lot for the reply 👍
Those horizontal beams - are they structural? Could you have the bed say 30cm higher and remove thr horizontal beam at the top to make the cutout full height?
I don’t think you can remove those as they’re integral to the van so not an option.
What's the white material with isometric pattern you used inside the cutouts?
It’s just vinyl flooring stuck on to the plywood.
Thanks. I know you said it was called something like prism. Do you know exactly where to get it from?
Why did you go for an L2?
Mainly to fit on our drive but also for cost as it was a lot cheaper and for usability. Glad we did as it’s worked out well.
Thanks for doing this. Very helpful. When you insulated did you allow for the air holes?
Glad you found it helpful. Yeah did allow for air holes. Also insulation isn’t fully air tight so not a big issue.
Where's that black sink from please?
Got it from Amazon. Links on our website/bio
Stop tutting you illiterate moron
Was there a support beam in the middle of this space you had to remove prior to starting? I have the same van and have this issue , I can’t lay a piece of ply flat? 😊
Yes there was. It’s was fairly easy to remove and have seen no impact or issues.
@ thank you 😊
What's those inserts for the pipe ??
They strengthen the plastic when you’re pushing in to the fitting so it makes a clean connection and prevents leaks.
Hi, I'm building my van based on your terrific build. I notice u cut a circular hole at the rear between wheel arch and rear doors. Are these connected to the black 'vents' at same location for venting? I think they are really to reduce pressure from van when doors are closed. Do they let cold in?
Yeah broadly aligned and really to ensure the pressure reduction works. Don’t really notice any cold to be honest.
the posts on the drill jig are the wrong way, you need the exit holes on the outside so the wood from the drill can fall away, that is why it was hard drilling.
Ah ok that’s why it always felt a bit of a faff 😂
Ooh @18:18 I can see you removed one of those metal supports, can I ask how you managed to get them off? We're a tiny bit shorter than you at just under 6ft but we'd need to remove two metal supports at the back. Thanks for the build vids, they've been super helpful!! 🤩🤩
Glad you like the videos. It was fairly straight forward to remove. I just drilled into the bits of metal that attach it top and bottom and then used a tool to snap the metal. It then just pulled off with some slicing of the glue. Way easier than I thought and didn’t need to use a saw or angle grinder.
@ great, I’ll add that to my list of things to do this weekend! 🤣 hope you found it worthwhile doing your own build, we have just swapped our 24 year old van for a slightly newer model 🤐
Hi! love your channel, been doing my own ducato conversion! where di you purchase your aluminium strutts ?
I seen you said in the comments RS Components, what length are they
Can’t remember the length to be honest, just under 2m but they’re 40mm width. Glad you like the videos.
Hi! Is the black material at 2:30 closed cell foam stuck directly to the panel walls? Not sure if I missed a step in another video when this was applied. Great videos btw!
Thanks glad you like the videos. Yeah it’s stuck directly onto the metal.
I should imagine the seats wasn’t cheap personally I would love to afford all the stuff you fitted it out with but I simply could never afford new seats for starters, looks great
The seats came with the van to be honest so it was just a cost of the swivels but yes we were lucky enough not to be too restricted by budget. But I think you could do similar for a bit less.
Hi, I've been using your videos fir my build to. Copied your bed but used IKEA Skova mid beams as I lot cheaper. I'll put in nylon runners and run the beams on felt pads over those. But thank u so much as even with your excellent videos I've struggled with design. Don't delete your videos I'm using the rest too.
Glad you’ve found them useful and definitely no plans to delete!
What size aluminium extrusion did you use 40 x 40?
Yes 40mm
And, you’ve had no issues with bending? And thank you for getting back to me.
Nope all good. Super strong.
Great video...maybe I missed it but you said the batons were 50mm width...what thickness are they
Thank you. They’re 18mm thick. The walls were 12mm.
Great video deffinatly a thumbs up
Thank you 🙏
Hi - just found your channel - loved it! Really liked your idea for the bed using aluminium extrusion. Please could you give some more details of what you used and if possible a link? Much appreciated 😊
Glad you like it and it’s helpful. I used 40mm extrusion from RS components. I did paste the order details into another comment on this video but can’t copy and paste here.
@@OurVanPlan thanks so much for your reply. Wish you well for all your travels
Nice work. Im going to adapt this for my SWB transit high top. Thx for the vid 👌👌
Thank you. Glad it was useful.
Super in love with this. I have my first van and want to do a similar idea. Where did you get the metal beams??
Glad you like it. They were from RS Components. 40mm aluminium extrusion.
@@OurVanPlan mate I love it definitely the best l2h2 build out there 🥰 thank you mate.
@@OurVanPlan also red components is very close to home for me 🥰
@@OurVanPlan I’m guessing it was the 2000mm?
Aww that’s really nice of you to say. Thank you 🙏
Been watching your whole series as im looking at doing a similar design. One of the things i was really interested in seeing was the electrical set up but unless im missing something you didnt seem to do a video on the install?
Yeah in the end I didn’t do a video for that because it was such a big scary job I really wanted to concentrate on it and also not really advise people when I wasn’t 100% sure myself. In the end it was pretty straight forward.
Very interesting thank you. Can you tell me more about the aluminium extrusions please? We were going to use the ikea struts that are often see on bed builds but yours look better! What size dod you use and where did you get them? Any other tips ? Thanks
Glad you found it useful. The extrusion is 40mm from RS components and they sell it and all the bolts and adapters and stuff. It was definitely worth doing this way as much more sturdy. No other specific tips really, if you follow what I did you’ll be grand.
@@OurVanPlan thanks so much!
@@OurVanPlan oh I just looked on that website…lots of 40 mm…could you specify exactly which one please? Maybe post the link for the exact one? Many thanks
It was a long time ago but just dug out the confirmation email: RS PRO Strut, 40 x 40 mm, 8mm Groove , 2000mm Length Stock no.:761-3313 Qty:4
Great job although I have to wonder if Neil did any work on this van as you look to be doing all the work or are you in charge of editing and edit the video to look like you do all the work when in fact its Neil that is the grafter lol
Haha I won’t tell him you said that! It was a joint effort although I did most of it as it was my project in the first place. He helped big time, especially convincing me everything was going to be ok when it was all going wrong!
doing a great job. do you have a link to the aluminium extrusion you used and the size please
Thanks. Not a link but it was from RS Components.
Hi love the retractable bed. Do you have a link to the aluminium extrusion please. Over time does it wear the wood down then start to stick ? Thanks ste
Thanks. The extrusion is from RS Components and have had no trouble with it wearing down or stopping sliding. It’s like it was when it was new!
Thanks for responding
This is a great series, congratulations. I am a retired cabinet maker and I've worked on several conversions including fitting a similar style ceiling. It was only an H2 van so headroom was at a premium. We wanted to attach the ceiling panels directly to the metal cross members with self tapping screws. Before commencing we did a test to determine if this would work. So we took a strip of 18mm ply and attached two grab handles to it. We then preceeded to screw it to one of the cross members, we also added a hybrid polymer adhesive in the form of Adiseal. The test took place 24hours after affixing the ply to the cross beam, it was very a scientific test that involved me hanging off the handles and lifting my feet off the ground ( I weigh 93kg) plus wiggling about and swing like a baboon, It didn't budge so we thought hey why not remove the screws and try again, much to our amazement it still didn't come away, so if you like a bit of security glue and screw stuff it's worth it. The slatted ceiling I built had three of the gaps filled with an aluminium extrusion that housed led strips, the extrution had a cover over it to difuse the light, the strips were seperatly switched and were dimmable. It looked amazing. If you are intending to copy this style, when you have your boards all cut to length orientate them the same way regarding grain direction . Wood expands and also it will cup (thats curving across its width). To determine which way it will cup simply look at the end and you will see the growth rings, they will straighten when the board cups, ie it will cup away from the centre of the tree. Place your boards cup side to your backing board that way if the move you wont have edges lifting away from your ply sheet. Also fix them using only one central line of screws, the board will expand and contract so by fixing in the centre you will allow the board to move naturally, no amount of glue and nails will stop this phenomenon. We also used another interesting method to attach panels covered in stretch carpet, we used Adiseal to glue velcro to both the van and the panel. Thus creating a panel with no fixings that could be removed if necessary. Apologies if i sound a bit nerdy but I have spent a lifetime building stuff for boats, campers and homes.
No not nerdy at all. Really interesting to hear what you did. It was a big project for us but the end result still has a wow factor to us 2 years later. So worth all the headache! Thankfully no warping or splitting so hopefully it won’t start now! We keep moisture under control in the van. Thanks again for taking the time to share your insight 😊
If you want to mark rivnut locations on to wooden batten simply take a piece of the corresponding size threaded rod ( or some spare bolts) cut into 1in lengths pop them in a drill sharpen to a point. Then screw the pointed bits of all thread into the rivnuts, to mark the wood simply align it level it or what even takes your fancy and push it firmly against the points, voilà, perfect marks for you to drill out your holes. Top tip: Mark the outside face of the wood as I guarantee the holes won't line up if the batten is ar$e backwards. Nobody can drill a perfectly plumb hole with a hand drill. If you are using rivnuts through your build, these sharpened bits of threaded rod will come in handy on lots of occasions. I'd also advise using an adhesive to help anything you are attaching to your van. No threaded fixing is immune to vibration personally id use a thread locker on rivnuts. For gluing, a hybrid polymer product like CT1 or Adiseal would be perfect, they have amazing holding power and remain flexible.
Thank you, great advise and definitely would have helped throughout the build if I were to do it again 👍
First class job, congratulations. You will not find better products than Osmo, so says a retired cabinet maker. Use Wood Finishes Direct for best prices (I have no affiliation to this company, I just used them for years) and they have a helpline to advise or suggest the best products. The Wood Protector you used in forvareas of high humidity environments, bathrooms etc it also protects pine from blue stain which is a common issue. You are correct about oil over water based stains, pine is notoiously difficult to stain successfully.
Thank you. Yes, I was looking at the ceiling this weekend and a couple of years on it’s still looking great with a very high quality finish.
Hi Just found your Videos, getting loads of great Ideas. Can I ask with the drawers did you have any problems with them coming out while driving, I thought you would have had to put catches on?
Glad you’re finding the videos useful. Yeah I fitted electromagnets to the back of the drawers (electromagnet on the wall and metal plate on drawer) and then connected to D+ so when the ignition is on they all magnetise and lock the drawers. Probably overkill but don’t have space for hidden latches and it’s worked a treat over the past couple of years.
Really nice job!! What’s the distance you left from the lhs edge of the carcass to the swivel seat when rotated? Do you find you hit your knees or can the seat slide far enough back and you could use the edge like a desk for eg. I’m currently drawing out a design👍🏼 cheers Ant
Thanks 😊 the swivel is quite close so we can rotate the seat but not all the way round so it faces the worktop. It goes far enough to face into the van diagonally (basically facing the sliding door) but couldn’t use the worktop as a desk. I think you’d have to sacrifice cupboard space to enable that, but it would be doable.
Two years in, are you guys happy with the underslung water tanks? Do they hung too low for bumpy dirt roads? Ours is currently small enough that is tucked in bweteen two of the beams, But the fitting were welded very poorly and we have to change it regardless, so as we are on it, we want something with a bigger capacity in a similar format of what you have. We are looking to change ours ahead of shipping our relay to South America where some of the roads can be challenging. Thanks a lot for your very detailed series. You guys did an awesome job.
Thanks for your comments and glad you found the videos useful. Sounds like you’re about to embark on an amazing adventure! We are happy with the water tanks and not had any issues with them scraping. They do sit quite high and I think other things would scrape first! We also have dual leave suspension on the back which raises the back a fair bit and helps with clearance (and comfort!).
Hi great video. If you didn’t have the propane tank, would the 2 tanks have fitted ok?
Thanks. Yeah definitely would have fit.
Hola! Como hiciste para perforar el listón del lado del portón lateral? No molesta en el riel del portón??
Great videos, thanks for sharing . . . .would it have helped to have set a datum line on the van walls to begin with? like in Kitchen fitting, a true level line from which all else is calculated Thumbs Up no 600 😀
Thank you, glad you found the videos interesting. Yeah possibly might have helped but to be honest it was evolving as I was going so I don’t think would ever have been logically perfect. Also verifying that line was actually true level is almost impossible I think!
I love the videos by the way, we have just bought the same van. 😃 Are you happy about the placement of the fan, I'm thinking of doing the same. I can't decide whether to have it over our bed at the back. Is it ok in that position in the heat?
Ah great. It’s a fantastic van. The location of the fan is good as it also helps when cooking. The lack of a vent in the bed area is a pain as it does get quite warm but nothing we can’t manage. I think having a maxxair in the back might be too much but if I was starting again I’d include a small skylight or something in the back, or maybe vents in the walls or rear doors, just so when the fan was on it’d drag the air across us.
@@OurVanPlan It's funny you say that because I have also bought a maxair skymax skylight as well. Basically trying to decide which one to put where haha I was thinking of putting the max air fan deluxe in the front because I think having the air from that on you would be too much as it's a pretty decent fan. And have the skylight in the back
Yeah I’d definitely do it that way round 👍
Great video, I followed it step by step to convert mine, far easier than trying to intepret the 'instructions' I've just fitted CTA swivels and the sportscraft lower profile bases to mine. I can only swivel the seat when nobody is sat on it and I wonder if yours are the same. I know someone with an old VW camper which has swivel seats and theirs do swivel whilst sat on the seat, so I wonder if I have done something wrong or if its just that the CTA bases aren't as robust as the 30 year old swivels my friend has in their van.
It’d be hard to swivel with someone sat on the seat. We always do it not sat on them and even then it’s quite tough to swivel. Maybe the old swivels are a more substantial mechanism?
@@OurVanPlan thanks for replying, I wasn't sure if I'd got a duff set
. . . am going to use you brilliant slatted roof idea in the restoration of my old 80's Monza caravan !
Great idea
I'm not sure but I think the white capped screws are for the inside of the van
Fantastic job you guys did, well done and smart solutions. I was impressed by how you solved the drawer locking, how strong magnets did you have to use? we also have a L2H2 Peugeot Boxer and thought of copying your solution 🙂 Retardation Roger (ClaroVAN)
Thank you. The magnets were off Amazon. The same ones that hold doors open/closed. So quite strong but not ridiculous.
@@OurVanPlan Tnx
What van is it?
Fiat Ducato
This is so interesting, most go straight into the build but it's really useful to get exact measurements (in your previous video), to see the different layouts and to hear your views and decision on age of van. We were thinking of getting a 2-3 year old Ducato but as you say, there's not much difference in price for new and we had no idea of all the options available which are so helpful for a conversion. So we are now decided to go for new and looking forward to seeing the rest of your build, thanks a lot!
