glad i found this video as i was scratching my head about this area. i too decided on a sliding bed but a slightly different design but it's good to see what other people are g doing.
You life saver. I’m going to do the same exact thing with a Peugeot boxer and I wanted to know if I’d fit comfortably, I’m 6ft2. So now I know it’ll be a bit of a tiny squeeze but I’ll fit! So thank you mate! Good video aswell! Very helpful for people who haven’t done a van before!
Brilliant, glad you found it helpful. Yeah it’ll definitely be ok for you and you never sleep laying in a straight line so there’s plenty of space. Good luck with the build 👍🏻
Very tidy work indeed! Great resulta as well. I'm looking at doing something similar in a Boxer, would you mind just confirming how you attached the complete box and frame assembly to the van please?
Those horizontal beams - are they structural? Could you have the bed say 30cm higher and remove thr horizontal beam at the top to make the cutout full height?
Thanks glad you’re finding them useful. Do you mean the strip lights in the cut out? They were just from Toolstation. They do various sizes and the strips and the casing.
Thanks. I use angle brackets to fix them to the wood that they sit on if that makes sense? So the brackets slot into the aluminium and then turn 90 degrees so you can then screw them into the wood. It’s one of the many fittings you can get for the aluminium.
Great video, was the 5-6 degree cut on the uprights necessary to get a straight (upright) wall? Looking to do mine soon and want to avoid the top of the cutout sticking out further than the bottom.
Yeah because the van wall curves in only slightly and we wanted level top/bottom of the cutouts and then the sides flat to the rest of the ply. Bit of a pain but worth doing.
Thank you. Yeah it definitely makes a difference although you do need a heat source in the van. You can then easily keep the van at a pleasant temperature even if it’s down to zero outside.
Hi, love your van, we are just doing cut outs for bed and foot of our bed, does your double mattress ALL fit inside the width of the recess or is there an overlap at the edges? Looks like we’ll either have to squash it in a little or trim corners of the memory foam mattress. Thanks in advance 😊
Thank you. Yeah we had to trim the corners of the mattress (then we invested in a custom sized beds one so it was done properly!) from memory it’s about 8cm cut out on each side
What size mattresses did you get for this build... I like the idea of the side to side (E/W) if I can get away with it. I have a 144 Sprinter.. so, room is premium.
Ah the Sprinters are a lot narrower than the Ducato so might not be so easy. But we’ve basically got a full size double length and widthways with some cut outs on the corners to fit in the alcoves.
Hi Mark, and thanks for a very good video series and educationally explained of the build with Ducato L2H2, I'm going to rebuild a similar one myself and wonder a little what exact distance you got between head and feet. I myself am 183cm (ca:6' 2") Best regards Roger
We got it from eBay but I’d seen it in a shop locally called Flooring Superstore. It’s not on eBay based on what I bought but the name/code is Prism 049L so you might be able to google that and find it.
@@OurVanPlan thanks very much will have a look now and have to say your build vlogs are great and so informative we're learning a lot from them and how to implement what you have done into our boxer conversion....👍🏻
Was there a support beam in the middle of this space you had to remove prior to starting? I have the same van and have this issue , I can’t lay a piece of ply flat? 😊
The van is an H2L2 so 5.4m long outside. Most people have the L3 which is 6m and have a shower/toilet. We don’t have the space for that so are having shower facility at the back doors and toilet concealed in the seat.
Thanks. We’ve only been to warm places so can’t definitely say. I think it’ll be ok though, particularly as we’re putting curtains in to keep some of the cold out from the cab/rear doors.
@@OurVanPlan I think Merlin means it differently, and I wonder about that too. Because the cutouts have less (thinner) insulation, I expect that the difference in thickness will be felt in cold conditions, for example, cold feet. Apologies in case I am difficult to understand, my native language is Dutch.
Yeah we decided to remove it in the end. It was fairly straight forward. Glued with a couple of metal tabs to cut. We just used a drill for this to drill through the metal tab/join in a few places to weaken it so it snapped off.
Yeah I’m the same and I’m glad for it. If I want to properly stretch out then it’s needed otherwise you’d always be laying with legs bent. If that’s not a problem arguably you could leave them but tbh I’d have regretted not having them.
Love your videos. I've ordered a new ducato which will be delivered next year. Can I ask does your webasto heater need the ignition on to work. Does it heat the whole van. Cheers lads
Thanks David and nice one on the new van order. Is it the new interior/dash? Assume it will be. No it doesn’t need ignition on and it does heat the entire van. It’s pretty intense but does the job.
We went for the L3 mate. There are four of us plus the dogs. We have the 2022 model, but we're in the same boat as you were with massive delays. We look forward to meeting up with you both at some point. Look out for the Peapod. 😀
Good choice with the L3. I’m sure it’ll come round quickly but I remember where I got sick of thinking about the build before the van arrived! It’s all theory and sometimes you need the actual van to sit in to plan properly!
loving the videos and attention to detail. I'm at a similar place in my build. Interested to know how you have found that rear panel since moving the support structures. Does it seem boomier in any way or has the wooden frame and insulation dampened it do you think?
We haven’t really noticed any difference. With the wood and insulation packed in behind, you wouldn’t know they had been removed. Also because we’re an L2 the entire panel is smaller and only has a single support rather than the two on the L3.
I have just bought a Fiat Ducato to convert and your videos help with the planning. Thank you.
Brilliant, it’s a great van!

Glad you found it useful. Yeah it was quite a complex part of the build with the planning to get it right but we’ll worth it.
Great video. I am just about to start this process in my Ducato and this video has given me some great ideas. Thanks alot 👍
Thanks Craig, glad you found it useful.
Well done ! Looking really good , lots of thinking needed, I bet you go to bed planning how to do things 👍
It’s constant yes 😂 gets a bit easier from now on, well that’s what I’m telling myself!
Nice design!
Thanks 🙏
Just bought my Citroen relay l2h2 and your build is helping me a lot 😍
Excellent. Enjoy the build, great size for a campervan!
Well done Fella. Keep going. Starting to see the fruits of your labours. 👍
Thank you. Yep, it’s feeling real now 😎

I could watch you guys work all day. Love the attention to detail and precision. Wish I had the skills and patience 🤣🤣🤣
Haha thanks. You should see the behind the scenes!! 🤬🤬🤬😂
Really great !! Congratulations !!! Thanks for sharing !!!
Thank you
Muy bien hecho y preciso,enhorabuena
Looking great so far. Great idea with the vinyl flooring. Looking forward to the next video
Thank you 🙏
Great video, very well documented, very enjoyable :)
Thanks Simon
Great video and I’ll be building in the alcoves but I’ll use 25mm Celotex boards for a better U value.
Great design and look forward to seeing more 👌🏻
Thanks. Yeah good shout although we don’t really feel the cold in the cut outs and wanted to squeeze as much extra width as possible.
Very tidy work indeed! Great resulta as well. I'm looking at doing something similar in a Boxer, would you mind just confirming how you attached the complete box and frame assembly to the van please?
Thank you. I battened the van walls and then screwed the frame assembly to those through the ply wall pieces of the frame assembly.
Nail gun crazy! Well done lads. Nice work, as always. I think I will need side flares as I'm 6' 3" so need a bit more!
Did enjoy that nailgun! Haha yeah you’d definitely need those flares!
@@OurVanPlan loved it when you turned it over and stuck a few more in just to make sure! 👍🤣
Those horizontal beams - are they structural? Could you have the bed say 30cm higher and remove thr horizontal beam at the top to make the cutout full height?
I don’t think you can remove those as they’re integral to the van so not an option.
Loving the build series guys, I'm really interested in the LED light you flush mounted, could you possibly post a link please.
Thanks glad you’re finding them useful. Do you mean the strip lights in the cut out? They were just from Toolstation. They do various sizes and the strips and the casing.
@@OurVanPlan that's great thank you for the information. We're still in the planning stages so I apologise if I bombard you with questions 🙂
Hi guys, i really like the sliding bed idea and how it saves you space in the van. I just wondered how the aluminium supports are held down.
Thanks. I use angle brackets to fix them to the wood that they sit on if that makes sense? So the brackets slot into the aluminium and then turn 90 degrees so you can then screw them into the wood. It’s one of the many fittings you can get for the aluminium.

Hello, how does the insulation work during the winter? Any updates? Good job on the van!

Hi, did you buy the vinyl for the windows off cut? And from where did you buy please?
Yes we bought it, from eBay I think. It’s a common design in some of the retailers but I found it cheaper on eBay.
@@OurVanPlan thanks
What size nails did you use to secure the ply to the 18mm pine? cheers
I think they were 16 or 18mm Brad nails.
What length and height is your van and are you fitting a shower and toilet ! Great video and brilliant option on the cut away idea thanks for sharing

Hey 👋 what is the height of the bed? What is the minimum of height to make this extension? Thanks !
Surprisingly impressed with the vinyl 👌
Now that you've been sleeping in it have you noticed the lack of insulation - head and toe?

Yeah we did

just not quite long enough thanks Mark

Looks great. Is that a Titan nail gun? does it work well for you?
Yeah it is, from Screwfix, and it’s fantastic. Enough power, quick firing and nice and affordable. Would recommend it.
0.35 Why not stick felt carpet on the armaflex to reach the maximum length (1.96 m) of the bed on both sides.

What exactly is the length of the bed, I ´ m 1.93 and wanted to build a bed in the same way.
It’s a standard double so 1.90m
