UPPER CABINETS Part 1 | Fiat Ducato L2H2 | UK Self-Build Campervan Conversion

  • We started the first bit of handmade furniture in the van - our upper cabinets. This is part one as there is a lot to cover and this video is is already very long but we hope you find our approach helpful. We're really pleased with the result and it's nice to have so much more storage in the van.
    We are having two upper cabinets in the van - one over the kitchen and one over the bed where our feet are. The one in the kitchen has spotlights underneath. Both have light switches in the ends as they are the perfect height for switches.
    We built a front frame first, then attached 12mm poplar plywood to the bottom and sides. We attached it all together with some other battens, including one at the back at an angle that would hold the entire thing up against the wall and into the thick battens we have at the top of the wall. We then added a divider in the middle and made a start on the doors. They are made from 18mm poplar plywood and use concealed hinges to attach to the frame.
    The cupboards are super light due to the plywood choice and having multiple securing points makes them a strong fit into the van. In Part 2 we'll show you how we sanded, primed and finished the cabinets, installing shelves and handles and final fitting into the van.

    WHO ARE WE?
    We're Mark and Neil and this is Our Van Plan. We've always wanted a camper van and took the plunge in 2020 by ordering a brand new medium wheelbase (L2H2) Fiat Ducato. We are converting it ourselves into the van of our dreams with little previous experience. We're glad to have you along for the ride!

    Great work. Built my transit conversion 5 years ago, amazing how much better kit is today on the builds. Just a note, the music is really loud when you cut away, double the speaking volume I would just bring it down a little. Scared me to death in this video. lol

      Thanks and yeah I guess with popularity comes more kit. And noted on the volume 😆 I think I need to increase the volume of my voice as the music is normal level knocked back a little bit. Thanks for the feedback though 👍🏻

    Excellent Work. Incredibly detailed. Thanks again. Quick question. Your fitting tolerances are really tight, do you think you may have creaking issues in the future? I see your wall panels have a couple of mm gap, which is what I have done . I know from other van builds that creaking can be an issue with wood expanding and contracting. I see this being solved with Silicone or similar. Are you planning on applying silicone to smooth the edges out?

      Thank you. I expect there’ll be some creaking - I’ve resigned myself to that in this build 😂 but both cabinets are fitted up against carpet which will help and I was going to silicone the joins internally to help.

    Awesome job guys. We look forward to your new videos being released as we find them so useful. As we mentioned before we are doing a similar job on our Ducato. Although we are months behind you. One question this time. Do you have a plan for the original lights that were in the back of the van or are you just going to isolate them and hide away. Thanks Matt and Jo

      @OurVanPlan  2 года назад +1

      Hey guys, thanks for being so supportive and glad you’re still finding them useful. So the light that’s mid way down we’ve incorporated into the overhead cabinets and the one at the back I disconnected. Actually I managed to trap it in the chassis so it’ll be there forever 😂 but not plugged in.

    You made that way harder then it had to be. You build the carcus on a work bench/table using the template for the ends. Then dry fit. And finish up
