    Thank God someone can spell it out what Mushoku Tensei is actually about. It's something literally said in the first episode and it's in the original Japanese title. Getting another chance and putting effort into life. It's so simple and yet a lot of people struggle to understand it.

    One thing most people seem to not think about is that even though yes his mind is automatically perverted and he himself has any odd attraction to underaged women to start you can quickly notice that even though his pervertedness stays causing his brain to function more sexual the root of this pervertedness seems different after Roxy helps him with his trauma to seems less like it’s from his last life’s inappropriate preferences and more like his new body subconscious hormones and natural attraction due to his new bodies age and the natural attraction of younger women due to the scientific want of mating. Not say his past life’s actions were right, which they were not, but that his new life’s attraction, as a whole, seems different being more scientific then driven by his past lives irregular attraction.

      @Blazeboombang 3 дня назад

      In they same why that when you were 14 you liked other 14 year olds but if your 20 to no longer like 14 year olds. Natural hormones and attraction due to your bodies subconscious driven by age. Even if my examples and they way I worded this may not have been the best or come across the best I hope that my overall point at least makes sense.

    You know why criticisms thrown against Rudeus doesn't work? He was reborn in a world with a different set of socio-cultural standards as a BABY (meaning, he had to go through the developmental stages of one all over again). Soul of an adult or not, Rudeus became as impressionable as a newborn again - which meant that while some of his personality carried over from his past life, he became influenced by his daily life in his new world in a way that no other isekai protagonists were. He had to grow up AGAIN. He had to learn a different set of rules of society and reality AGAIN. Applying our modern-day sensibilities DOES NOT WORK for that kind of reincarnation.

    Rudeus is pretty trash imo. There's definitely things he needs to work on and change. Im fine with him being a trash person except for his attractions to children... they could have kept him being preverted and needing to work on that without being into kids. 🤷‍♂️ he can fix a lot of his other mistakes but that... that behavior was an unfixable act. If it had only been in his mind, at least he could work on that (still awful). But actually acting on those thoughts was to much and unnecessary.

    I’ve really been on the fence about watching this show, because I’m not interested at all in fan service and perverted protagonists just annoy me and feel gross and this show seems to be riddled with it. I haven’t seen any of the episodes, I did read a few chapters of the manga years back and everything annoyed me from the overpowered and perverted protagonist and fan service, especially involving children to the weird messed up family dynamics that they just flubbed over and the deceit and lies that they depicted in a positive light. Everything about the main character and the things that the manga was depicting and the framing of them annoyed me and made me stop reading only a few chapters in and then when it became an anime people started defending all of it as redemption and I just couldn’t get behind that because the framing of things and the things they show on screen don’t scream “this is bad, he shouldn’t be doing this” to me. It screams “look at this gross kinky stuff audience.” There are ways to frame things so that we can get a picture of a character’s debauchery without engaging in it ourselves. I think I’d be willing to watch it if I knew it mellowed out on the fan service and junk in later seasons, but I completely doubt that’s the direction of things.

    Nanahoshi explicitly mentions in the anime that she and Orsted went to meet this world's specialist in Summoning Magic. Orsted was also shown looking at the mana disaster from a very very long distance way, showing that he was nowhere even close. You don't need to read ahead to disprove that Orsted wasn't the one who did it. On the matter of redemption. Maybe redemption isn't quite the right word, but self-improvement and changing yourself is very much a core part of the series and it's the common thread of most themes and storylines in the series.

    I mean, should he date 40/50 year olds as somoene whos biologically 15 then? no, but he cant date another 15 year old because he reincarnated so he is mentally older. so what, is my guy supposed to stay a virgin forever? Realistically speaking everyone here would also date at some point if they got reincarnated, its hypocritical to say otherwise

  • @AzureRadio

    The story does take into account how he still views himself as his old self and he HATES HIMSELF. That's the point though, the theme of redemption goes for him as a person as well. Him taking this second chance and becoming the best person he can with it. Slight spoiler, but every single time Rudy sees Hito-gami he does so as his old self. The very last time he does he appears as Rudeus Greyrat, his TRUE self. With the experiences and relationships that he has fostered over his second life. Rudy redeemed himself by finally shedding his other self, there is a reason we are never told his previous name, because it is irrelevant. That isn't who Rudy is anymore and he truly becomes Rudy, fully taking his shot at redemption.

    something people missed. when they first teleported. rudeus vowed to himself and to eris to keep her safe and get them home. eris also understand that which is how should could be so care free during their journey. rudeus has been protecting emotionally and physically all the time. only when he almost died does she reflect on that as who is going to protect rudeus then? which is why she left with a sloppy message. people seem to to think that his mental age is 40 something. cause thats the years he experienced. well its not. his mind is very much a Childs. he never managed to grew up in his old life. spoiler!@#$. . . .. . . . . the man god doesn't actually see rudeus`s form. when he is in the white room. only rudeus sees himself like that. he hates being in there because it always shows him as his old self. in other words the whole time he was hating himself. he sees himself as a vile. thats why eris leaving hurt him so much. he can only see it as his fault even when he didnt know what he did. he was ready to kill himself for hurting sera. he only noticed why he looks the way he does in the white room when everything is over. and he sees himself as what became rudeus.

    Incredible video. I actually agree and disagree with it in equal parts which is always the kinds of takes I find most fascinating to discuss. The comparison to Subaru is on point as both series challenge their protagonists respective to their underlying faults. Subaru is far more cruel and controlling than he believes himself to be so it punishes him WITH cruelty (thus Betelgeuse as the VERY deliberately crafted foil of a sadistically cruel puppet master), whereas Rudeus is actually far KINDER than he believes himself to be and so it challenges him with kindness that contradicts his perpetual state of self-hatred and lack of confidence. Try as he might to believe he is worthless, whenever he gives advice (that he learned from dating sims, manga, anime, light novels, etc) the people he helps with that advice do not give one iota of a crap that he didn't come up with that advice himself because HE'S the one that helped them, not some random fiction from another world. Rudy is an unreliable narrator as his interpretations are always colored by his lack of self-confidence and deeply entrenched believe that no one could ever *really* love him, which is why Eris leaving hurts him so deeply. He jumped to the conclusion that she didn't love him because it affirmed his pre-existing belief that he is unlovable. His self-flagellation basically gets so bad he reverts back to his old way of thinking that he doesn't "deserve to be loved" which is where Sylphy's character shines as that story's way of affirming to him "No. You are wrong. You DESERVE love. You DESERVE that happiness. YOU have value to ME." It wasn't even intentional on her part but after their marriage she puts the pieces together that her desperate desire to be with him was actually what fixed that part of him. She finally allowed him to acknowledge that he is worthy of love even if he still struggles with the self-love aspect a bit. So bravo for elaborating that in such a succinct comparison. Though I do have to push back on one interpretation, which is the idea that the series "justifies" Rudeus during his second argument with Paul. Once you're aware of all of the context, BOTH Paul and Rudeus correctly conclude that they are in the wrong because neither gave the other the chance or the patience to understand the other's perspective. Rudeus takes it so hard precisely because he thinks Paul was right to call him out. Sure, Eris and Geese take Rudeus' side, but I think far too many people fail to notice Ruijerd's very *quiet and subdued* reaction. He judges neither of them and simply wants them to make up. After all, it was Ruijerd who got in Rudeus' face for letting a child die right in front of them when they could've helped. He understands Rudy's perspective after that incident, and he can empathize with Paul's as a father himself. He simply accepts that both of them made a mistake because of differing perspectives. So Ruijerd, being that quiet fount of wisdom, simply guides them towards reconciliation because it doesn't MATTER who's right or wrong, what matters is cherishing your family while you have them after he found that out in the cruelest way imaginable.

    I wholeheartedly disagree with your take on the framing of Eris and Rudys love scene. Right before every single of Rudeus thoughts is concerned with Eris's wellbeing in the future and her sadness due to the past. During the act the framing explicitly focuses on their relationship, with a direkt callback to Eris first setting boundaries and then having the beautiful compilation of their path there. Rudys past life only comes into play AFTER Eris is gone. The show only starts focusing on his past after his heart has already been broken, and even then it doesn't look to adult past Rudeus, but instead to teenage past Rudeus and the way he rejected the help from his brothers and parents. In fact 99% of the scenes from his past life are before he reaches adulthood within it.

    One thing I have to say is that the scene between Rudeus and Eris in the light novel includes a little bit more context as to the thoughts going through Rudeus's mind and how he viewed it afterwards. He calls the part of him that wants to lose his virginity his worse part and his thoughts are more about the relationship he can now has with Eris and even says that he knows in his mind that he loves her. Rudeus is not very different in the light novel but there is more of a conflict between his perverted side and his moral side that is in some parts missing.

  • @tylerd.1

    What I don’t understand is how you or anybody can say somebody like Rudeus in his past life, somebody that was a neet shut-in, had the mental maturity of a 30-40 year old. We literally went through a pandemic that forced us to become shut indoors. Look at how messed up our generations of kids, teens, and young adults have become just because of that pandemic. Every single one of these groups I listed have lost 2-3 years of mental maturity after only 2-3 years of being forced to be a shut in. Rudeus in his past life became a shut-in when he 14-15 years old and it’s implied this happened when he was a freshman in high school. This means he was a shut-in for 19-20 years before he died. Imagine how mentally unstable he is compared to the freshman of today who are extremely mentally unstable and only had to endure 2-3 of being a shut-in. You literally can’t be saying that Rudeus is mentally an adult, it’s literally just not true, and if you genuinely believe Rudeus is an adult man before S2 then you seem more like a creep than Rudeus because you’re trying to justify how much you don’t support p3do’s and how much you hate Rudy when you can’t see the facts for what they are. Also Rudeus has the brain of a child. If anything, Rudeus is just an adult with the mind of a mentally unstable teenager but has the brain of a child. He understands life based on the experience he had in his past life so obviously he does stupid stuff sometimes, it’s not like he was reincarnated in his first life either, his experiences were that of a child, Rudeus is a fucking child, the person he was in his previous life was an adult with mental maturity of a mentally unstable child, we have studied this in real life and this is a real thing that had happened, people like this in real life aren’t classified as adults either, so therefore again, Rudeus is a fucking child, get that through your head.

    You seem to be under the delusional belief that adults make better decisions than children. Adults are twisted by their culture in so many ways that are counter to their own well being and most people will never be able to pull away from these beliefs by the time they are in their twenties just because of the way our brains age. Your prefrontal cortex locks behavious and social rules in place to some degree. Young brains are more plastic and this is not a bad thing. It allows you to adapt to changes and change your mind about things that no longer or perhaps never made sense more easily. This physiological reality defeats much of your argument about Rudeus being an "adult". He has a new physical brain after all.
