  • Rewatching the turning the point in Subaru's character in the Director's Cut of Re:Zero made me realise there was quite a bit I wanted to talk about, but not this much :D
This was meant to only be like 10 minutes long but I realised I wanted to talk about Subaru's mental state before he changes as well as the actual change.
I would have liked to refine this video a lot more, specifically in the script, but I gave myself the deadline of before the Director's Cut ends to get this video up. Annoyingly I technically have missed this deadline, as the last episode went up earlier today, but I had this video finished on Monday but I ran into some issues uploading it - and I think less than a week after the show ends still somewhat fits in the deadline so I count it ;).
I realise I repeat myself quite a bit and I describe the plot more than I like to and analyse less than I would like to as well; For example when I was editing I realised I wanted to talk about how Re:Zero criticises isekai through its portrayal of Subaru, but also is a great isekai as through its run it slowly turns Subaru into the hero all the people who find escapism in the genre want to be, but by making him actually earn it by finding his faults and improving on them.
I am however actually really happy with the editing! It's a lot of fun and I'm embarrassingly super proud of some of the jokes!
My main priority was actually finishing a video before an actual deadline, as I could have spent probably months continuing to refine this and it would have ended up as something I had huge huge expectations of. I'm also one of what feels like seven people who hasn't received a huge boost in free time due to the whole COVID-19 situation, if I did I definitely would have spent more time on this.
I do a have a couple more videos planned, and I do think they should be shorter, but only time will tell - have a good one.

This is honestly the best analysis I've seen about this series by far--and that's saying something as there's a few good analyses about Re: Zero out there. If you have plans to continue, please. Very open and bare with word choice; clear and concise. Great understanding of the portrayals and motives of all characters. Great understanding of Tappei's intent. Love the calm voice too (no homo lol).

That's real sweet of you to say! I'm glad you thought it was concise because honestly I didn't think the same! I have more stuff planned which I can start to work on at the end of this week and I can afford to take more time with it, so hope I can keep it up 💪

@@phoenyck Yeah concise, to me, usually doesn't refer to the length of the content overall, but rather with speech or sentences. There's a lot more info here fit into smaller sentences, which carries more weight and punch--and best of all it's easier to follow.

This was amazing! I finally finished the video and then I rewatched it. A lot of the ideas about Subaru I never even considered, and if I don't get more videos from you I will attempt to sue.

Thank you so much! I do have a couple more ideas, I don't have an idea on when they'll be out but I do want to make more videos!

This is fantastic EXCEPT NO Subaru absolutely does not fake a vegetative state. Tappei cleared this up himself, it's simply that Subaru can still come back from whatever mental struggles he has while Petelgeuse supposedly cannot(I personally think both of their mental states are more reflectED in their witch factors than reflectIVE: Petelgeuse maybe wasn't originally a slothful person but this personality of his which has refused to move on from the witch and his past trauma is himself refusing to change rather than being unable to, Subaru in the 5th volume actually reads to me as potentially rejecting his witch factor and suffering as a result because he no longer sees the point in carrying on but also cannot die and expects this will only repeat with more of his and their deaths - which Rem's death drags him back out of as he covers it with the hatred for Petelgeuse).
Subaru's mental struggles are never faked.

We also never get insight into what Crusch and Priscilla really thought of him there so it's framed as accurate criticism but this is because Subaru agrees with them inside, not because they have Emilia's interests in mind. Crusch has her philosophy and very much believes in the responsibilities of nobles and monarchs, Priscilla is deeply authoritarian and genuinely was looking for entertainment at the least on the surface - she has zero interest in telling him how bad a servant of Emilia's he is. Although I also believe he may be reminding and triggering her trauma over something, as we're getting such a long buildup into learning about her perspective. I really dislike people putting faith in Priscilla even in one scene because in impact she's had such a toxic effect on everyone. She is kind of sexually harassing perhaps I'd say of her child butler, Schuldt, as a result of having turned to only treating young people and some exceptions as possible safe outlets for affection due to her eight marriages to men in her life by 21. She's in my opinion very complex but not redeeming herself at all, and I don't see her as honestly showing benign motivations.
I think on the surface at least her rage is about how Subaru is in denial of his powerless and laughable position in this world, as someone who still thinks he can aspire to more. It's very much against the views she holds and learned long in the past!
