- I told myself not to make a Cyberpunk video. I woke up two days later in a cold sweat in front of my computer monitor with a 3 page script ready to be recorded.
FOR ANYONE WANTING ANOTHER GENSHIN VIDEO: That is the plan! I really wasn't planning on making this but this show just affected me in a way that no other show has done in a long time. I have a Genshin video in the works, I'm having a little bit of issue with the script as I'm trying for a very different format with that video so I thought this'd be good to get out in the meantime. I'm hoping to get that video out by the end of the year (or failing that, at least a video) but no promises. Usually editing is the longest part of the video-making process for me as I need to source all of my footage outside of recording but for my next Genshin video I will be recording a lot of the footage as I'm recording the audio so I hope the editing won't take as long.

I heard Moist Critical also say that Gloria’s monologue felt shoe horned in. I actually think Trigger did too good a job with it. It felt too real to me, the child of a single Hispanic mother who escaped to America to make sure I would have a better life than her.
Gloria seems to be a South American immigrant, David’s basically a first generation American. When I watched it, I basically got flashbacks to my childhood as a first generation American. To when I would fuck up in school and my overworked Mom would have the same monologue, the same fears, the same dreams. I feel like it’s captured so well that it seems overwrought to someone without that sort of background. I wonder if there is even any real way us to communicate different upbringings given the difference in reception by the audience, between “too real” and “shoe-horned in.”
I don’t personally think it was shoe horned it. I thought it felt like a natural conversation a single-overworked mother and her teenage son whom suggests dropping out to find a job
It might very much be an experience thing! I've heard quite a few people say that they come from a similar background as David and that the scene felt very genuine to them, which is a great thing!
I think partly it's because she died immediately after so they didn't have any more time to fit it in and it would just be something I would be drip fed if that makes sense? I also think, that to me, it was a prime example of "tell, don't show" where I think there are other ways to convey what was in the monologue. I'm still not fully around for it being a good way to tell the audience a lot of important information/character motivation but if the context of the scene on its own is realistic and relatable to people who have similar backgrounds then I can definitely forgive my misgivings more. @@phoenyck Yeah, as a first generation Jamaican-American I’ve had this talk word for word when I got mediocre grades in HS. “We’re black so we have to work three times as hard to get what the others have” and “you’re never going to get in to a decent college like Harvard or Berkeley if you keep acting like this, won’t you do it for you mother” we’re common in car arguments
She seemed Mexican or Mexican-American to me. Nightcity is basically California. There's a lot of Mexican representation Ive seen on Cyberpunk 2077 the videogame

The scene where he's talking to his mom in psychosis broke me well before the obvious audience-breaking sequence of the end.

I love david and his main power, the sandevistan, soo much, speedsters are typically op from the get go but with the sandevistan (and the laws of cyberpunk) there's limits to his op power that makes it interesting to watch everytime, like I had the feeling he could f up big time when he uses his sandy throughout the series
I think he could have escaped Cyberpsychosis if he didn't go HAM on the chrome enhancements. made me pissed tbh.

I think it's worth mentioning that Cyberpsychosis in the TTRPG is based off of the Humanity stat, which works similar to Sanity in games like Call of Cthulhu.
It's derived from the core stat of Empathy, which allows a person to interact well with other characters. Much like how in CoC undergoing exposure to the eldritch (seeing the remains of a civilization that lived before humanity, encountering a shape-shifting slave organism) will whittle away at a character's sanity and ultimately drive them to madness, cyberpsychosis can result from a character's humanity being worn down by psychological trauma (death of a loved one, lifetime of poverty and war) as much as physical trauma of getting chrome.
In real life, there is a connection between psychological and physical trauma, and how one can influence the other.
It's greatly abstracting experiences in the tabletop game, but I think it's kind of fitting that a lifetime being worn away by a cyclopean beast that seeks to consume everything beneath it (the corps, in this case) coupled with the pain of having turned yourself into a weapon just to survive, can cause you to lose yourself in fight-or-flight response because that's the only way your mind can process it.
David feels like a case-study on the process; he had tremendous empathy, giving him comparable humanity, but it will only get him so far in this world, because much like Call of Cthulhu, people are just tiny creatures meant to serve the whim of unknowable beasts and the only way to survive is to just stay out of their field of view.
Great analogy. I didn't touch upon the TTRPG simply because I haven't played any campaigns for it but I've read up a bit about how it worked and you've summed it up incredibly and how it relates to the show👍
@@phoenyck Don't forget therapy is incredibly useful to stabilize ones mental health both in Cyberpunk and real life. The key to prevent going psycho is to confront and deal with the traumas affecting your character. Immuno suppressants, like you mentioned in the video, is a quick and dirty way to temporarily hold onto sanity but it's a bandaid to the real problem and just exists for the corpos to profit of the people actively trying to take them down with more and more firepower.
It's also worth mentioning that immunosuppressants are an invention of Trigger and do not exist in either the cdpr game or the ttrpg. Might be a neat homebrew item but then it messes with the balance of the game itself
@@WolffangLightwood That's...complicated. They aren't entirely their own invention, there's mention in the tabletop game of drugs that can help and that are sometimes used in therapies and treatments, but generally they're intended for best effect to be used alongside therapy, not stand alone products...and when people are really hitting the chrome, with cutting back and swapping to either base-line implants that function at 'I'm just a person, not a weapon' levels or cloned organs, limbs, etc, if you're wealthy enough to afford that kind of extravagance. Of course, controlling a lot of the market share of those human cloning market for that kind of thing is why Biotechnica's got some...ah...questionable inclusions in their meat products. Can't go wasting all those extra bits and bobs when they could just get mixed in with the rest and make up 7% of your kibble. No one needs to know, right?
There's also a flip side with Adam smasher. Somebody who already had no empathy at all, who can withstand the extremes of replacing his entire body with chrome because he was always a monster
There is still alot to pick up from the anime as there is so many little details that come around and make sense even facial ques. Like as you said with Maine when he was going Cyber Psycho he was ready to shoot Dorio and then she injected him bringing him back to "Sanity" only to be shot and killed at the same time, then Maine's true Psychosis rage filled grief filled blood bath began.
Maine's Cyber Psychosis was confusion and unable to tell what was reality who was who, yet he knew what he was doing after Dorio's death every step of the way, yeah he was not focused (shooting at David) yet he knew it was David....he knew it was Dorio on his "pyre" he knew he was at the end of the road Psycho or not....and his only focus was Dorio. Which is all this small story telling that leads into....the finale with Lucy and David. It is not a Dues Ex Machina, it is rules set up and everyone in the universe is written too. Further more as you said Lucy brought him back when he was on the floor with Adam Smasher ready to finish him....he was awake, he was aware, he was himself. No drugs or anything just one focus. Lucy. Just like Maine in his last moments.
That is just one part to the whole serise. You even clipped together Pillar's party drinks and Rebbeca emulating them later, the talks on David emulating Maine. There is alot to the show and yet it can be taken as a fun dumb action romp or a deeply written show. Why I keep coming back to it after my first viewing.
Beautifully summed up. Yeah, I went into this show completely expecting the "dumb fun" and then everything is just so smartly constructed, completely took me off-guard.
It was funny to me how he called edgerunners an advertisement, because my first watch didn’t feel like that. However, I did play through the game on launch so I realized how it practically is an advertisement for the game/ series to new players.
I didn't think it was an add when I watched it. But... I bought the game like an hour after finishing the anime. Lol. And I ain't even mad it worked on me. The game was awesome. XD
This was a great watch, contending for 1st place among my favorite essays covering Edgerunners. The show affected me greatly, and seeing someone echo and expand on the thoughts I had is very validating. Thanks for the banger vid.

I would like to add more to Gloria as a character. Being the only role model for David growing up as a kid, David had to become a sacrificial person that puts his significant other above himself. It is the way he was thought by Gloria not through her words but through her actions. When David told Lucy that he attended Arasaka Academy, he explained that it was for his mother's sake, for her dream, to which Lucy replied: "But that's not your dream. You and your mom are two different people.". David's way of living is for the sake of the other people's dreams. Which further adds reason as to why he can't pull out from the edgerunner life when having the dialogue with Lucy in episode 8: "Mom and Maine... they all left me something to do.". The dialogue he has in episode 10 with Lucy falling off the Arasaka tower adds even more truth to David's character in the way he replies to Lucy. I hope this examples shed more light as to how impactful Gloria's values and virtues impact David. I would like to say more but there's too much to add.
Great video edgerunners really was a surprise hit for me too you got a sub from me. Also as much as I love Chainsaw Man I don’t think it gets good enough this season to surpass edgerunners for best anime of 2022 because it only covers the first 4 arcs which are amazing just not it’s peak.
Thank you so much! And yeah I'm going into Chainsaw Man blind and while it's good, it hasn't hit those high expectations I have just yet. I'm sure it will as the story and characters get time to develop and I think the adaptation is phenomenal, but I don't see it knocking Edgrunners off as my AOTY.
@@phoenyck CSM is one of my favourite works of art ever. BUT this first season won’t be adapting the whole thing (which is understandable MAPPA already works themselves to death I don’t need it all at once) I think that this season will be great but it can’t compare to a complete package that hits so many emotions so quickly like edgerunners. The Manga absolutely broke me in it's later half which few things can do. I really hope you enjoy the series as much as me, Power is best girl forever.
Facts. Ive been telling bandwagoners and (no offense) CSM fanboys that Cyberpunk Edgerunners is easily The Best Anime of the year 2022.
Heads up, the Sandevistan speedware doesn't work like it does in the anime. It only increases your initiative by +3, it doesn't allow you to take more than a single action in one turn or increase your movement speed. It's just your reaction time going into hyperdrive and your perception of the world increasing to the point of feeling like slow-mo you also have to spend an entire turn activating the Sandevistan (3 seconds) and lasts 1 minute (20 turns). Your reflexes remain as they were

Thank you. People were trying so hard to heat this. It’s just a genuinely good show. It’s a show that came in told it’s short heart wrenching story and left. I think it was perfectly executed.
It may not be the best show in existence. It is in fact camera an incredibly memorable and emotional show. It’s abrupt and Painful ending is everything I could have asked for. I hope they let the show and David rest in peace.

First one ive heard that realises the importance of Glorya’s “shoehorning” the first episode becomes a masterpiece (or at least way better) in retrospect because of the ties it brings to the finale
And I would like to point out that if it wasn’t shoehorned in, they would have to cut down/ replace other scenes to flesh out her story
From one small RUclipsr to another; REALLY nice thumbnail. Sneaking the supporting cast into the gaps was a brilliant touch. I think it would be slightly more effective if the symbol were yellow, even though that's not what it looks like on his jacket, purely because people associate that yellow with Cyberpunk in general, but mostly, nice work man. Honest compliment.

I had no interest in watching the show, was spoiled of Rebeccas death...Didn't know why everyone loved Rebecca so I loaded the show up and binged the show in two days. Loved Becca and was sad to know she was gonna die but my God...I was not ready for the LucyXDavid. Last episode broke me.
I've watched so many anime this year this is the best anime no the best show. This brought me to tears and i do not go to tears easy,
I played cyberpunk 2077 and legit had 0 bugs I genuinely loved it. The game does a great job honestly showing someone who’s struggling to accept the inevitability of death

Maybe a bad choice of words on my part. I only meant that while David most likely had a shitty upbringing in some aspects it was counteracted by a lot of love from his mother, whereas a lot of other people in night city will have had worse of the prior and none of the latter. Thank you for enjoying the video nonetheless.

on a side note, you have a really nice flow of emphasizing key points like on 6:40 to 6:45. But I wished you'd have stayed there for a moment before moving on to the next because that was quite jarring of a transition.

Yeah I see what you mean, honestly it's because there is only like that half second of footage of Dorio so I couldn't hold it. I could have looped it to hold the moment a bit but the loop may have been quite obvious. Definitely something I will keep in mind for future though!

Lucy still best girl but becca is a close 2nd. She was loyal till the end, its just crazy how she went tho. I feel like they did her kinda dirty with her death and she did not have to go like that but it did deliver on the surprise aspect

@@en-men-lu-ana6870 Or any cyberpunk themed TTRPG like for freaksake DnD is not the be all end all of TTRPG they are load of systems that come with already written rule and ressources that will significantly speed up the game, and make it easier for both the player and GM to achieve the feel and mechanic they want to create interesting narrative.
Also damn it Cyberpunk as the license named Cyberpunk not the genre literally started as a TTRPG during the late 80's.

I love the cyberpunk genre (be it anime, movies, books, etc.) And Edgerunners was good. Good enough to make me buy CP77 which I really enjoy - it's so full of references to stuff from other Cyberpunk media like GITS for example. I previously didn't buy CP77 due to the well known facts of it being buggy and unfinished but it looks now a lot more polished that what I expected.
The anime looks quite a lot like the game. I mean, unless you were expecting the game to also be animated.

The characters are sorta mentioned in the game! Their weapons you find, his yellow jacket in the game. I think the game is pretty good! And the anime is based off in the year 2076 and then the game 2077 so they are connected in a way! 😀

You want a tabletop set in Night City? Funny you should mention that... look up Cyberpunk Red, it's the latest edition of the Cyberpunk TTRPG (made by Pondsmith, the guy who created the world of Cyberpunk back in the 80s)
Yeah if you buy 2077 you get a free copy of the 2020 TTRPG rulebook but I have also heard of RED! I actually saw earlier today that Talsorian Games is making an Edgerunners-themed RED starter kit which could be a cool way to jump in!

Ever wonder who would win a war between Arasaka and the Atlas Corporation from COD Advanced Warfare
I mean Arasaka actually lost most of its influence as the result of the fourth corporate war, where they failed to defeat Militech. Because of the war Arasaka was actuallly booted from the continental US by the Confederation of Free state the rest of the offical US government, and even Night city. Militech itself was nationalized and incorporated into the US army.
By 2077 both corporation are in the process of building back to their former peak and close to achieving it if they didn't already. With Arasaka being able to get back to the US by siding with by defending Night City during Unification the war in 2070. Despite technically siding with the free states they achieved to negotiate a return to the US and Night City becoming an international Free city, because the US thought it wouldn't be worth it to escalate the war.
So I would say they are weaker because they are not on the level of being able to be a nation of their own, and still need to coexist with government.

Subvert is actually not a nice word when you look it up. If this subverted every expectation you had, you'd probably hate it.
I had to Google this; you're right that I didn't know the original meaning of "subvert" (to undermine the authority of something) but in this context what was being "undermined" was my assumptions when I began the show. Like the phrase "subvert expectations" still does mean to surprise an audience by twisting common tropes and that's what I was going for in the title. When used in the context of art/literature "subvert" definitely peels away from the more negative connotations of "undermines". Interesting bit of knowledge to learn though.
I still think Lucy was fkn stupid for not telling anything. And David was ultra stupid too, but is harder for him cuz getting rid of any addiction ain't an easy task specially when he has so many feelings involved and dreams (her mum's and Maine's) that he wanted to fulfill, damn stupid guy, the grumer gal should have told him something.
