Canadian Retro Things
Канада
Добавлен 16 май 2019
In my videos I look at things from my past, old things that I had or wanted in my childhood. I'll also look at some modern things that remind me of my childhood. My childhood in the early '80s was all about video games, computers, and D&D. If these are things you find interesting then some of my videos may just peak your interest.

I Lied About One Of My Commodore 64s
Do you know the memory "Poke" hack to make it run at 2x speed? It's great for calculations, but more important the screen turns into complete psychedelic madness! I forget the address-- used to know it by heart.
Poke 65495,0 speeds the computer up, if a game is not frame locked it can be a lot of fun!
@@CanadianRetroThings ty for your answer! The speed Poke I'm thinking of completely borks the video display-- so it was used mainly for intensive data processing, i.e. it couldn't be used on a game. It's possible that this was on the CoCo 2, as I had both, but I'm reasonably certain it was the CoCo 3. I'm very eager to talk someone into taking a video of that effect, as I doubt an emulator could emulate that! :)
@@Ainglish-qj5bb I think POKE 65497,0 is a faster poke that messes with some of the systems.
@@CanadianRetroThings If I asked you really nicely, could you run your machine under the fast speed and take a video of the screen? As a young teen, I used to stare at the screen for several minutes at a time.
i bought a panasonic msx2+ computer from japan a few years ago and theres no problem running it in canada or usa. japan is also ntsc.
Even I will attest that Dungeons of Daggorath properly takes the #1 slot. :)
I had "Out Of Box Experience", which I renamed "Excitement!"
I wish I had one of these back in the day!
The hiss comes from the opamp driving the speaker. That opamp is in the switching power IC that generates the 5 volt signal. You will definitely need a loud audio source for the 2068. I’ve not tried the TZXduino but for folks who want to use a phone/tablet, I recommend a small LM386 amplifier to boost the signal.
Thanks! I am going to find something different than the tablet.
a TZXduino should work for loading ZX Spectrum tape files off of an SD card.
I will have to look into those, thanks!
The TS-Pico is an excellent solution, too.
a Sinclair with a Power switch? BLASPHEMY!
The crazy things they do when they make computers in North America!
OOOh! nice! I want a Speccy meself!
You should talk to the guy I got this machine from, he can get anything!
Sounds like a nice guy to know!
If a 27C256 is needed and you have 27C512 I would think you could write both original and Spectrum ROMs to it and make it switchable (highest address line link to either GND or 5V).
I had thought of that (after I did the video), since I will probably never use RF, the channel selector switch would be good for switching ROMs.
I was going to suggest the same thing ..lol just bent up the high address pin of the rom and run a wire.. :)
try loading WAV from a source with a higher volume level. Smartphones and tablets from the last 10 years all have ear protection and for that reason can't be turned up loud enough. Any Linux PC set to 150% output volume and the WAV played with VLC set to 120% volume is working in my case. Better solution is to use a tape emulator like TZXDuino or MaxDuino or SVICAS. You can easily build your own MaxDuino with a cheap Arduino Uno clone and some parts like SD card reader and audio amp for a few bucks. Makes for a nice project as well.
Thanks, my first guess was volume problems!
There was an Emulator cartridge with the ZX Spectrum ROM available for the TC2068 and TS2068. No ROM swapping needed. TC2068s sold in Portugal came with it bundled. Let me add that I rarely used it without the cartridge as all software I run was for the Speccy.
I just recently got a TC2068 and luckily it also came with the rare ZX Spectrum cartridge - although I will probably never use the Timex part of the computer, its nice to be able to revert to the original state - I also got a TC2048 which is generally a ZX Spectrum 48k with a Kempston joystick built in :-) I got both computers for next to nothing, I don't think the seller knew what he had :-)
I have been looking for one of those carts for some time with no luck. Until I get one, ROM swapping is the next best thing!
If your ROM is larger than necessary, you could solder a toggle switch to the high address line of the ROM chip and burn the Timex firmware into the extra space. Then you can select compatibility with the flip of a switch.
@@joelavcoco The channel selector switch would work perfect for that, I will probably never use the RF out!
Good rule of thumb - All Spectrums need new capacitors. I imagine the Timex is no different
I will do that sometime soon.
Far from true. All Spectrums can be improved regarding audio and video qualityby recapping. But they usually don't need it to be working. Any of my Spectrums worked fine without recapping.
The Timex is different: 2068s rarely need new caps.
The hosts you're connecting to are running a TNFS server. You can run your own locally and connect to it, and there are many others out there (at least that have Atari software, not sure about coco).
I guess I will have to get some more FujiNet carts for my other systems!
you went from canada to usa to buy games ? how about custom fees ? there are stores in canada too.
@maniaque37 I only live a few minutes from the boarder so the odd trip South is not much further than visiting the stores in the Vancouver area.
@@CanadianRetroThings ok but dont they charge you custom fees for what you buy in usa ?
@@maniaque37 They never have charged me, I just make sure I'm honest about what I buy. For 40 year old games, they generally don't think they are worth anything.
Awesome video, Ken... Glad you finally got to using the Fujinet. I've had mine for a few months now and love it. I also have the SDC and the Backbit Pro - and all 3 have their own strengths and weaknesses. One thing that I love the Fujinet for that you didn't touch on is connecting to BBSes. You should give that a try and make another video! Also - good choice of the Game On Results list! ;-)
I do want to do a follow-up with things that I didn't cover (mostly because I had not tried them yet!)
Really cool, I don't have any modern storage solution for my CoCo yet so this might be the ticket. By the way, Irata (pronounced kind of like errata) is Atari spelled backwards. It was first popularized by the game M.U.L.E. (Irata is the name of the planet it takes place on) but has been used for many other geeky things since.
It is a tough call between this and the SDC, they both have different strengths so I would say a lot depends on exactly what you want to do with it.
Great video. It is wild that we have this in 2024. I would love to see you mess with a DS-69 as well as Ears setup for the Coco.
It's something I have thought of but not really looked into. I guess I should officially put it on my list....
Epic, sir.
I am commenting before I watch the whole thing here, so this may be useless, but... 1) Older C64 boards like the one you have there are known to glitch with the diagnostic software. 2) It seems to me that you may be having socket contact problems, IC sockets, especially the cheap Chinese ones don't last long if you remove and insert ICs too many times. 3) That TL866 programmer does not do the best job on testing logic ICs, yes, they are functionally tested, and if they fail, they are most certainly bad, but if they pass, that doesn't mean they are 100% good. Not all logic ICs are equal, and that programmer does not discriminate 74LS, 74HC, 74HCT ones and also the tests are done at a much slower speed than the actual speed they need to run in the computer. In short, don't trust the TL866 on logic tests, especially when it says the IC is good. 4) Diagnostic harness will give you all kinds of false bad reports if the edge connectors are dirty, please make a habit of cleaning them sparkling shiny before you connect the harness. Also plugging them in on dirty edge connectors will contaminate the female counterparts of the harness, you need to clean them too with lots of contact cleaner and a toothbrush if you have been using them on uncleaned edge connectors.
8-Bit Show And Tell sent me here
@@nethoncho thanks for checking out my channel!
Yeah there were a lot of Vic20 carts in unusual sizes. I remember the games by iMagic like “Demon Attack” and “Dragon Fire” were on small black carts. Also I had some Sega Vic20 games believe it or not like “Buck Rogers” and “Star Trek” that came on these nice rounded rectangular shaped carts with smooth edges.
@@TCPhil-Gaming The unusual Vic20 carts are my favorite to collect
Yes I definitely played all my commodore games from cassette back in 1985, a disk drive was too rich for my blood! Glad to see another Canadian retro fan. I'm from Winnipeg and heard about your channel from 8-bit show and tell. A few months ago I got one of those new "ZX Spectrum Next" computers from the kickstarter. Even though it "can" play games off tape it's so much nicer to just load the .tap files right off the built in SD card reader. I like retro, but a few modern conveniences are nice. I'll take modern storage media any day.
One of my play-throughs on my new Spectrum Next: ruclips.net/video/9m0AU6uF7RM/видео.htmlsi=tdUsOGIbjmOGGRMU
@TCPhil-Gaming The modern storage is pretty much a must have. I grew up with a CoCo and only had a tape drive. I like the old storage media but don't miss having to use it!
@@CanadianRetroThings I didn't get a disk drive for the C64 until about 1988. By that time most of the local Zellers and Kmart stores in Winnipeg were starting to only stock new C64 games on floppy. I moved onto the Amiga around 1991 until that died out in the mid 90s until the dark times of PC-compatibles only. I'm really enjoying this new Spectrum Next. As you know, the Speccy's weren't available to us in Canada and even if they had been the whole 50Hz PAL/NTSC thing would have made them incompatible anyhow. This new NEXT works good though; modern HDMI output and a lot of recent model TV's sold in Canada these days seem to work at 50Hz when fed a signal (that was almost unheard of in the CRT days) so no compatibility problems there.
Great video about a great game! Thank you! Oh, and… Robin sent me… :-)
One of my favorites when I had it on my ColecoVision
8-Bit Show and Tell brought me here. Nice video
Thanks for checking out my channel.
WOOT! Thanks for the review!
It's a lot of fun to play around with!
Pretty cool! I think the oldest Mac I have is an SE/30. I should get one of the earliest models sometime and try this out.
It is a fun little add on!
Great upgrade on that Macintosh! Love it!
I love it as well!
Does the Rominator allow for 800K Floppies, with the proper drive? With only 1 MB of RAM installed, the maximum system version should be 6.0.3. with 4MB you can run 7.0.x
I guess I need a memory upgrade...so does this computer! Yes, it allows 800K disks, at least on the Plus as that is what it runs natively, not sure about the 128 or 512 version.
It uses a modified Mac Plus ROM, so you can use 800K floppy drive units in a 128K or 512k. So technically it would turn the 128/512 into a '512ke' Mac.
@@sloopymalibu Thanks
It's interesting watching you methodically rule out possibilities as you diagnose the cause. Will be really cool if you eventually get this working perfectly!
Thanks! That is the same approach I take to a lot of things I do in my life!
Does this mod use the Ch3/4 switch to kill color?
The Ch 3/4 switch no longer does anything after this mod.
@@CanadianRetroThings So I'm told. I have heard that using a switch on the colorburst signal pulling it to ground would kill color and create a more sharp grey-scale image. Useful at times especially when the display with color isn't as crisp as wanted. Once my order comes in, I'll try to ID that line and see how to repurpose the 3/4 switch to pull color to ground.
@@erroneus00 Sounds like a great project, grey scale is much better for text only screens, so that would work great with the many available text adventures
I have cats so I subscribed. Big grey one you gave there.
I'm looking forward to seeing this work... in the fall! :)
I am as well!
I would love to have a PET, but my two biggest fears are spending a ton of money on one and then not know what to do that could be fun with it and that I can technically achieve, and the second thing is that a lot of issues with it seems to be quite complicated to troubleshoot, like you are showing.
These PETs just sort of fell into my lap so I couldn't say no. Luckily there is a great community to help trouble shoot if I run out of ideas of how to fix it.
Thank you for the video. You were not the last person on Earth to find out about that little adaptor .... Apparently I was. Thank you again. Your helpfulness is only matched by your fashion sense. 😂
Glad I could help!
I aplaud your good video production values. Maybe review non-game applications? Still not convinced to buy a CoCo 3.
The biggest non game reason to buy a CoCo3 (in my opinion) is NitrOS9 EOU, you get OS9 Level 2 as well as the GUI system. The SDC allows you to mount 2 hard drives so you can have the NitOS9 EOU drive and a personal drive for saving programs. I did a couple of videos about it as I was learning to use it, it comes with a large number of productivity programs.
@@CanadianRetroThings I had loads of fun with my $20 thrift store Model III 48K. Got LDOS running and using a Wayne Green book on Model III interfacing, we had it taking & logging readings, switching 120V lights, 24v relays & water valves and real-time on screen monitoring all programmed in basic. Many late nights tag teaming the B&W screened Mod III taking turns at the keyboard. We bought all the needed parts at the local Radio Shack when they still sold cool stuff, 8255 PPI, opto-isolating chips, some 7400 stuff. I find a lot of Canadiens retro computing on youtube. Must be those long cold winters that keep you all in your basements hacking the nights away. I'll check out more of your videos.
Oooh an Odyssey! I begged and begged my parents for an Atari VCS and was denied. They did however find a second hand Odyssey for me. Which in 1980 was an absolute turd. But now, oh how I wish I had kept it. ;)
I would love to have one as well, this was the first time I had actually played on one.
Man the back of that car is claustrophobia central! Whew, I don't think I could've made that trip unless I was up front.
I had bags piled on my lap in the front....

You are absolutely correct in describing Boatfest as the "most relaxed retro get-together." That's what makes Boatfest so unique and special.
I can't wait till next year!
Great job capturing the event!
I was having so much fun I al.ost forgot to film stuff.
Nice video!
Thanks!
Bah instructions. What fun is that. ;D Just bought one f these a couple of days ago. Looking forward to its arrival.
The CoCo SDC is, I would say, the most useful modern thing I have for use with my retro collection.
Luckily if its the video ram that should be an easy fix. My pet had weird issue with its character rom that caused similar issues.
The next video should be out next week, and yes fixing this problem was easy....
OOoh! nice! You need more PET videos so I can learn all about them! I am getting my PET's soon, after 5 years of waiting... I am sooo excited!!! and that video anomaly looks like a stuck bit...
Oops, I forgot to pack your PETs. Just kidding, they are ready to go to VCFMW.
So if I write a program in BASIC, how do I save it to the USB stick?
Apparently this also works on the Dragon 32/64, I'm off to eBay :)
You can buy brand new 6309s (yes, they still make them!) from Retro Rewind.
