Congrats on your many additions to your family! I don't think I've ever seen a chicklet-keyboard PET 2001 with the "professional computer" label on it! Usually they say "personal computer" there. That looks like a 2001-N label, and the 2001-N has a full keyboard and no built-in tape deck. Pretty weird!
And that's definitely a 2001-N motherboard inside it!! The large connector from the power supply to motherboard is the most obvious identifier. The original 2001 (chicklet) have a much smaller 5-pin power connector.
@@CanadianRetroThingsAnytime! I happen to have been trying to repair 2 of my PETs just recently so I've learned some new stuff. I have no clue about CRT things though.
For somebody who up until a couple of years ago was never even in the same room as a Commodore, you've sure built up quite a collection of their machines. What with like 45 vic 20s, 23 C64s and now 5 Pets? Good on ya Ken. Looking forward to seeing how the repairs on the 3 go.
I always intend to have original version and one I can mess around with, adding modern hardware to. Then I discover different board revisions, case stickers, etc and I MUST HAVE THEM ALL!!!! 😁
Not a home tinkering friendly design! Probably one of the reasons I was originally drawn to the Radio Shack Computers, they encouraged you to take them apart and upgrade them as it meant they could sell you the parts!
I still have my 1st PC, a PET 2001 chicklet keyboard. I also have a SuperPET. Schools here in New Brunswick used to be full of PET computer labs. Would be nice if you can find a MUPET system, used to MULtiplex PETs (12 IIRC) to a single drive and printer. Commodore drilled out some PETs to prevent DIY memory upgrades. I've seen them with ALL the empty IC spots drilled, having 4 is easier to fix. The 4016/4032 were the same models I used in High School in the early 80's. Some of the ROM sockets are empty, for 3rd party ROMs. 11:45 The horizontal circuit is the issue, check all the caps, they fail. 17:04, please check the internal expansion bus header pins, they look squashed together. They could affect operation.
If you leave the one with the horizontal line on for long you will burn the crt beyond repair. Yes, pets beep, so it also has issues on the main board.
Welcome to the non-working PET owners club. Frank has had mine since Boatfest. Mine wouldn't even power up, but it looks like you're going to have at least one good PET out of the ones you're keeping. Also noticed the Vic-20 Cosmic Cruncher cartridge on your workbench there. Not the Vic's best Pac-clone. That title would go to Jelly Monsters.
Nice finds! RUSD was probably Richmond Unified School District as it was called back in the 1980s. That was in Richmond, CA which is not far from Oakland, CA. Look forward to seeing the progress and upcoming vids on these! I wouldn't want to live in either of those crime ridden areas today, that is for sure. But it was cool that back in the day here in the SF Bay area we had plenty of schools with PET computers. My High School had exactly 2. We also had 2 Apple IIs and 2 TRS-80 Model IIIs and some other mini or PC type systems. Yep not a huge computer lab for a high school. But with a city population of under 30k it was probably the best we could do.
My first school to get a computer had 1 Apple 2. It sat in the hallway outside of the area that had Grades 5-7 and everyone had to gather around in the hallway for lessons on it. After the first semester with it students were aloud to book 15 minute slots to use it a lunch or after school. So we had a computer hallway!
@@CanadianRetroThings LOL. I thought our school was bad. Of course this was in 1983/84. I don't even remember seeing computers in my grade school ( which I now live a block from haha). I guess I should ask the district if they have any old stuff that they want rid of. Probably not by now.
If I remember correctly (and this is going way back to the early 1980's that I last used a PET) - for the 4000 series, the last two digits should be the amount of RAM (so a 4016 would be 16K, 4032 would be 32K). Hope I am remembering that correctly.
Excellent video and addition to your collection. Let me know if you need help with the repairs. I've worked several different PETs. Check my video on the PET Companion board. Would be very helpful with your repairs and to do video capture too

Those empty sockets are normal, you can stick extra ROMs in there such as programming utilities and such.
I may be messaging you about your knowledge of PET stuff!
On PET #2, Commodore deliberately drilled holes through unpopulated RAM areas to prevent users doing their own cheaper RAM upgrades!! Brutal :)

Rudys’s companion, Petsd and a romulator will be extremely helpful for your repairs.
Crazy how Commodore would drill holes into the motherboards to prevent end-user RAM upgrades.

There are a few pins that a squashed and bent out on a couple of the boards, everything will be well checked.
Wow! 5 Pets! I am looking forward to the repair/restoration videos!
I can't wait to get at least one running, I have never played on an actual PET before.
some nice project to try to repair these :-) I only have an emulated PET. Also you cats are nice!
I am looking forward to learning new things!

Love your cats!
I have 2 more that were being camera shy! I guess that means I now have 9 pets 😂

Cosmic Cruncher was the first ever game I played on the VIC 20 so it holds a special place for me but Jelly Monsters is better!

The first computer I remember using was a Commodore Pet in my Grade 5 classroom.
We had nothing but Apple 2 computers until Grade 12 when we got to use Macs.
You are in for a bunch of work and some cost in spare parts my friend. The first 2 are in serious trouble. Good luck!
I will probably only keep one of the 2001 editions.
Very cool! Looks like you won't be bored for a while! ;)
I am looking forward to learning the architecture of the PET!
I think your other pets are getting a little jealous 😉
Once I have some of these working they will be happy, more keyboards to walk on!

That is how they did it, it is a good indicator weather an upgrade has been done!
Chuck Hutchins has some excellent videos on pets
Just looking up his videos, thanks!
You tricked me, Ken! 😅
I could turn these into one giant PET robot pet....
