Pro-line Boat 2019 Walk Through - After Lots of Work- Part 2 of 2
BEFORE VIDEO: 2015 When the boat after buying sight unseen. No work done: ruclips.net/video/loYwgF28Uks/видео.html
After owning my Proline 20' Walkaround boat for almost 5 years, let's go through it and talk about what I like. It was my 5th boat and an upgrade from previous runabouts. The high freeboard made it feel very seaworthy for a 20' boat.
Shipped it 3000 miles then another 300 when I sold it. This little boat has been in the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, Puget Sound, Straights of Juan De Fuca and now the Pacific Ocean.

    I usually run mine in a tub so the water heats up in the tub from recirculating. When I did my impeller a few years back it was clean as a whistle and I run in salt water. I'm going to check zincs though now too.

    So, that's actually not salt, but calcium, which blocks the anode from doing its job. None of the anodes you showed are serviceable. All should be replaced fairly frequently and for the low cost of the anodes, why wait until your engine starts getting eaten up?

    Okay as far as it goes, but a few more lessons learned will keep you out of trouble when doing this on saltwater motors where the anodes may be frozen in place from corrosion and wear. If they have been in there a while, they can be very difficult to remove. Do not try work the anode cover loose using the 10 mm machine screw in the center, and do not try to remove that screw from the cover. It will easily shear off. Use a large screwdriver between the motor case and the end of the cover's flange to twist the cover back and forth. A rod matching the hole size of the cover mounting screw can be used to wiggle it up and down. With those two techniques, it will eventually loosen enough to where you can pull it out with pliers. To remove the old anode from the cover, hold the cover in a vise or crescent wrench. Use a 10 mm hex driver on the recess in the end of the anode and unscrew it. Use vise grips to turn the anode if the hex recess has been eaten away. Apply teflon pipe sealant (not teflon tape) to the new anode's threads before screwing it onto the retaining screw. Apply grease to the grommet and cover mounting bolt. If you do shear the 10mm screw off, the remains may come out when you unscew the old anode from the cover, in which case you can just buy a new screw. The entire assembly is available for around $30 (in 2023) if it gets too messed up to reuse. On the 90 and 115 hp motors, the anode down low on the starboard side has tight access. There's insufficient clearance to completely remove the mounting bolt from the cover, and doesn't need to be. Once you've loosened the bolt, use something thin to get between the cover and the engine case, and then work it loose enough to make a gap for a screwdriver blade to fit in there and pry the assembly loose. The cover and bolt can then be removed together.

    OK, well they didn't have a chronic overheating problem, but they did recommend moving the telltale up there. I hope you have solved your overheat issues. I know the warning horn comes on usually when it is too late when running at high speeds, but unfortunately you are usually not looking down at the gage either when running at high speeds, until it is too late. That warning horn signals a few more things than just overheat, so you may have a different issue going on besides overheat, or the horn may be malfuncitoning as well. Hope you get it resolved...

    Nice little video. I couldn't help to notice a couple "quirks" out the gate. Electrical codes (yes, there are codes for marine) specify a couple of things. 1. When utilizing #6 AWG or larger wire connections, wing nuts are not permitted. It's stated you must use a flat washer, lock washer and a nut on the post. 2. A maximum of four ring connectors upon any one post. Please, don't get me wrong. I'm guilty of exactly the same wing nuts and sometimes five or more connectors stacked on a post too. But, I've also come to know the importance of (as close to as you can) perfectly sized, crimped, and corrosion free electrical connections, especially for you saltwater guys. Too many of us are guilty (including myself) of just "making it work", with intentions on cleaning it up. You never want to become stranded, or faced with an onboard fire due to sloppy electrical work. Again, thanks for the video. Cheers!

    Question . The origional temp sensor is basically a thermostat as well . Wonder if splicing the wire and tapping the two together may work as well . Dont see where splicing existing wires together and using existing temp sensor would hurt

    • @johnvgig
      @johnvgig Год назад

      Mike, I don't think the scenario you suggest will work. As I understand it, the wire he refers to, runs the overtemp alarm. I've seen other videos on how to test that sensor. It has two states, open and shorted (overtemp). [shorted to ground]. Think of that sensor as a simple switch, one side connected to the wire, the other side connected to ground. Normal temp, switch open. Overtemp, switch closed. A temperature gauge's sensor is like a dimmer switch, as the temperature goes up the resistance changes. Two different type sensors. (FYI, I’m an electrical engineer, never worked with these sensors before, but I'll be testing the overtemp sensor/alarm on my 60hp Mercury this week. Reply here and I'll let you know how that goes. My boat currently doesn't have a temp gauge.)
