Photography tips: Grey Mares Tail waterfall, Kinlochleven, Scotland
My next visit to my local woodland will be with my 85/1.8!!! I've used this lens only for portrait...a shame!!! Thanks, John.
@@waltervermeiren6860 good luck! I was the same, i only used that lens for portraits, but not now! Hope you get some great shots!
This idea worked really well, John. Beautiful photos 👍
thanks Robert!
John, this is AMAZING!!! I love your creativity in coming up with this idea. And an unexpected treat to get this midweek! It looks like you had a lot off fun doing this. Thank you for bringing us along for the adventure!! Jim.
Thanks Jim! Yeh it was a great morning. Take away all the lens choice stuff and stop worrying about aperture and just enjoy the photography!
I like shallow depth for woodland photography. It helps to simplify chaotic scenes and gives subject separation when you lack atmosphere.
Its a great technique isnt it! I'll be doing more of this i think!
Enjoyed that John, always do. JK
@@kerrsteel2 thanks!
Never seen you smile so much. Even better with a 'slower' lens as the shadows increase the separation. Also a great technique for street portraits, shoot at a fast shutter speed, watch the subject pop.
This was all with my "portrait" lens. Only really use it for portraits so i figured it needed an outing for something a bit different!
@@JohnMcKennaPhotography Portrait lens - 80mm ?
@@iainmc985985mm! Its the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art. Beautiful lens and great optics!
Been thinking this for a while now. Every landscape photographer is out looking for fog to give separation. I always think "Why not just open your aperture?" Can't be that easy, can it? 😂
@@davidcrighton3431 it is! Give it a go!
A lovely wee bonus. Really like those shots especially the single branch with the yellowing leaves at 22.15 beautiful 👌
Cheers mate! Something a bit different!
Loved the video. I do a lot of macro photography so I frequently use focus stacking. I tend to forget the advantages of a shallow depth of field in a busy woodland environment. I struggle to find landscapes in thick woods because of this. Thank you for reminding me that there is a different technique that opens up so many more possibilities.
@@wolfgangmarvelous7239 thank you! I found i was stressing too much about focus stacking and being in focus. It was a nice change to get out and break a few rules!
I've been struggling to get the subjects of my woodland compositions to stand out. This may be exactly what I need to try. Great video and take care. 👍😎
@@foto-spective thanks! Good luck with the photos. Let us know how you get on and if you share them online
Beautiful work as per your usual standards. On a more serious note though you really are catering to the more advanced photographers on this one, and although it doesn’t really apply to me it’s still good to hear your perspective and tutorial opinions on this type of photography. You are obviously very skilled professional photographer who can break things down to my level, and obviously your professional colleagues who will benefit from this greatly. Thank you for sharing another great video with us all Sir.
Thank you, what a lovely comment!
Nice! Many of us watching can't afford, or object in principle to subscription pricing for packages provided by Adobe, so focus-stacking just becomes too difficult without them (happy to be corrected if there's alternatives!). I actually prefer this type of photography anyway, it's as photography has always been for decades, without ultra-fancy editing.
Thanks Matt. Yeh, I agree, too much focus stacking going on!
Very nice
@@jamesbarnes3063 thanks James. Its a great location
For me the best vlog and pictures I've ever seen on the Devil's Pulpit John!!!
Thanks!!
Always wondered why use the, sometimes dangerous, stairs when you can walk in relative safety down the field behind you at the start of the video and then walk into the gorge from there
And its a lot quieter!
Very nice! I kept thinking each photo was my favorite until I got to the next. The colors are fantastic. The photo at 23:25 very nearly took the prize but I believe 16:06 edges it out as my favorite.
thanks! It's a great location - will be back here soon I think!
Thanks very much John, been on my to visit list for a while!
Its worth a visit Chris!
Oh my goodness! Your shots are other worldly! The autumn leaf color and the cascading ivy, the glint of sunlight on the grasses…the shimmer on the water! Stunning! Absolutely stunning! ❤
Thanks Trisha! Glad you liked them. It's an amazing location. Hoping to be back before the end of the year!
This is just so ethereal with your interpretation of the location as usual stamped on it.
thanks! Great place to photograph
Great vid as usual. I'm not a fan of the Christian hobby of slapping the name of 'Devil's whatever' on natural wonders. So I discovered this place is also known as Finnich or Finnich's Glen. Do you know who, or what, Finnich was?
Thanks. Yes, it's actual name is Finnich Glen. Finnich is a common name in the area. There's a High Finnich Farm nearby, and a Finnich Drummond Farm. The bridge which crosses the water is called Finnich Bridge, so I'm guessing the glen / gorge got it's name from being close to these locations
@@JohnMcKennaPhotography thanks.
This was wonderful! Beautiful images! In the earlier images, I loved how the long exposure brought the mist into greater prominence than was visible in the video. Contrasted with the vibrant colors it gave the images a mysterious feel. These shots of water and mossy walls always convey a kind of intimacy that invites me to sort of sink into the scene. Thank you, John. Another great start to my Sunday!
thanks Jim. It was a great morning. Hoping to get back one more time before the turn of the year so watch this space!
Was there just last week John. Ventured down to the far end too for the first time, got some nice shots. The water level was low, so I was able to venture into uncharted territory with my trusty wellies on. Still waters run deep ............... ;-)
it's a great spot isn't it? Have you shared your photos online anywhere?
@JohnMcKennaPhotography Hi John. Yes on @jmac544 👍
Good stuff, fantastic place to photograph
@@jeffdaniels5166 thanks Jeff. Yeh its a great location
Great video again John I see Simon beat you to it and put his one out last week😊 I liked the use of the polariser it did work well on the water and leaves.
Thanks Malcolm! Haha - aye - I was still working on the Routin Brig video when we did the walk and I wanted to try to get them out in some kind of order! I really need to speed up my editing process! :)
It's ridiculous That I have never been to the Devils Pulpit, its a Gorgeous place, with the Autumn shades the Ruby Coloured River and those Lush Greens you managed to capture some delightful shots.
Thanks Douglas! It's a great location but definitely go early. We were first to arrive but after a couple of hours the crowds were beginning to build and doing any serious photography was impossible.
Final shots a beaut, especially at this time (three weeks ago), which I've not taken before. There's some great shots looking back out of the glen from that beach furthest in. With decent wellies you can get further, but I'd take a walking pole for balance.
I was tempted to get down to that beach but decided to turn back as we were still considering a trip (literally) down the stairs to the pulpit but by the time we got back to the stairs the crowds had begun to arrive so we left it for another day. Will definitely get back down to the beach first chance i have though!
@@JohnMcKennaPhotography There's a ledge on the left hand side, underwater, around the pointed sticky out rock, which then means you can transverse to the right hand side. This is of course totally water flow dependent. If its just after heavy rain I wouldn't go into the water at all, even at the open end of the glen, for fear of logs washing down. Keep an eye out for the large concave sphere like hollows that are part way up the walls of the glen there .... poses a erosional/geologic question I haven't figured out yet.
I'll check that out next time I go down!
Brilliant video again John. Nice to see we didn’t double up on images. Love the colours too 👍👍👍
@@SimonJerromes cheers, thanks mate. Was a great morning!

Really enjoyed the video this week beautiful place and some excellent compositions. Colours were looking amazing there.
@@bernardjohnwright thanks! Looking forward to going back in winter now!
Beautiful Images
@@jamesbarnes3063 thanks!
Best thing about the location is the variety of shots you can get within a tiny locality. The weather report is for fog on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. I've been a lazy sod this autumn but I guess I'm going to have to make the effort.
aye its a great spot. I'm out on Tuesday and Wednesday so hope the fog predictions are correct!
Nice falls thanks mate
Thanks!
Stunning mate, the shots on the wee outcrop looking under the bridge are beautiful 👌
cheers mate. It's an amazing location. Will definitely be back there soon!
Hi John. Really enjoyed this week's video! I was pleased that you were able to get to that little rocky outcrop because your compositions were really special from that viewpoint. Lovely colours once again! ThankYou for sharing
Thanks Sylvia! It's a great location and I'll be back here again sometime soon I think. Glad you liked the photos!
John, I think the first of your videos I watched was at the Devil's Pulpit. Around that time, a lot of your videos involved waterfalls in wooded areas. They had a kind of mysterious quality to them that really drew me in. Today's video is like visiting an old friend! The images are so rich and they have that mysterious, intimate quality that first captured my interest. These are magnificent photos! I also really enjoyed how you shared with us the way you handled the unexpected changes to the scene because of the higher water level. Seeing your thought process as you explored ways to take the shots--and explaining how you used different timing on exposurs for different parts of the shot--was really instructive. At some point, I hope you'll walk us through how you put all that together in post processing. Thank you! I hope someday I'll get to visit Scotland and photograph some of these stunning locations myself.
Thanks Jim! You might be interested to know that my next video will be from the Devil's Pulpit again! Managed to get some mist there for the first time, so look out for that soon. Also, there could be some news in the next Newsletter about post-processing tutorials! ;)
@@JohnMcKennaPhotography after watching your video this morning, I looked at Simon Jerromes'. You were there with him at Devil's Pulpit, so I figured there'd be another from there coming soon! I'll look forward to it.
yeh, we shot those one day last week. I've got around half of my video / photos edited so hopefully should have it out at some point soon!
Love these type of shots but I'm not as safe over slippery rocks these days!
thanks! I'm the same - I was all over the place at times!
Some very nice photos John; I’d never heard of the location, but now hope to visit it sometime!!
Thanks! Its definitely worth a visit!
To overcome the water depth issue, get yourself a pair of stocking foot waist waders and a pair of boots about 3 sizes bigger than you need to allow for the thickness of the neoprene sock. They're great, it's just like wearing a pair of thicker trousers, and you don't need to worry about wet or muddy conditions or over-topping your wellies in slightly deeper water.
Thanks Dave. I'll have a look at those!
Another great video John and some absolutely stunning shots.I also watched your previous vlog at this location and my,my what a difference a couple of months makes !! The autumnal colours totally change the atmosphere and vibrancy in your photos. Looking forward to watching your next location.
Thanks Tom! Im hoping to get back here in a few months when - ideally with some snow or mist! Next location is almost finished!
Really really good John I loved them all of course I am a sucker for a waterfall and Autumn.
thanks Malcolm! It's a great location. Might head back in winter if we get a lot of snow!
Loved this, John, Super place, you got terrific shots, the Colours are lovely and as I have mentioned a few times before your Processing has really brought out the detail and beautiful Colours. Definitely think you have a few Potential big prints, I will definitely need to have a trip down.
thanks Douglas! It's a great location! I shot this video on October 18th, so the colours should be incredible by now!
Beautiful images and a cracking video John
Thanks Chas!
Lovely video John, fantastic location. Particularly enjoyed the shots under the bridge. 👍👍
Cheers Simon! Got to try to get the Pulpit one out now!
Great work John!!!
Thank you!
Scotland is such a beautiful place
It is!
Lovely film again John. Particularly liked the last shot .. the colours and the shape of the water worked well 👍👍
cheers Simon!
Another great video of the colours at a great location. I love the way in which you can really find great extracts from a view and create a wonderful impression of the scene. It reminds me a little of the Pattack Falls near Laggan When we first went there, we ended up getting engaged on the little footbridge; so it has good memories for us. Probably explains why I don't have any scenic shots of our visit there. The House of Bruar shopping experience has expanded enormously since we first went - it almost makes me want to yell out at the shoppers that they need to step away from all the boxes of shortbread and Edinburgh rock and do what is a great walk and with loads of amazing viewpoints.
Thanks! Yeh, I made the mistake of popping into the House of Bruar after the walk, thinking I could grab a bite to eat. It was so busy I left again almost immediately!
