5 Reasons to Start Leather Working (Beginner Leather Craft)
I guess I have to disagree about quality of that fleshy corium leather core. Corium is only good for gaskets. Full grain leather has a lot more tinsel strength than the corium split . I used to make drive belts for antique machinery, and I have really seen this in action I understand that trouser belts should not have that kind of loads on them, but it is still frustrating to have a belt tear at the hole you always use. I agree about the low price, I just resent W mart's misleading advertising. Unfortunately, it is a current industry standard that if something is made from any part of the hide it can be labeled "genuine" leather. I would have rather seen a Nylon core.
Very useful info. I was looking at those W mart belts on line. I think I 'll pass. They offer a single piece brown belt with obvious cut edged - real leather, but the face looks heat pressed split grain rather than full grain to me. Best to start from scratch I guess.
This "instead of" in the name of the envoirement makes me angry. The process in making faux leather is poisonus the product it self is poisonus in the end of its cirkel ir will not go back to earth no we are to burn it as with faux wood, the smoke will be as highly poluting so there needs to be a filter filtering the smoke and as the filter is full where does it go? Insane and what do we do with all them hides that would give us all the genuine leather that we ever need? Them are as burned because there is no demand except for premium quality.
Lol! You sell a template for belt holes, yet you only buy belt blanks that are punched and edge burnished? Wait, and you make $100 and hour when you are paying 30-40 bucks a blank? And only the very top portion of a hide is good for belts? LMFAO. You are so wrong on so many levels. It's hilarious how you feed misinformation to all the people watching you. Anyone following your advice is guaranteed to learn nothing and lose money like a fool. I feel dumber for have listened to your lies.. If only the top portion of a hide was the only good part for belts, why do most suppliers sell bends? Do you even KNOW what a bend is? Bends are made for belt makers. A bend goes from behind the shoulder, across the back, and down to the belly. A bend makes up the majority of the side. You are the blind leading the blind. It only takes a few seconds to cut belt blanks, not half the day like a putz punching holes with some POS wanna be drill press punching belt holes. I guess you never heard of a hand punch. I can punch all the belt holes and the turn back holes in mere seconds with a hand punch. Seriously, I don't know where you learned all the goofy things you keep spewing. Everyone can do things a bit different. That doesn't really matter. But when you got a guy here telling BS info to people who don't know any better, we call those people snake oil salesmen, because they are liars. You are only here to cash in on people's ignorance and that is shameful. Somehow you videos keep popping into my feed. I will remedy that by blocking you. Yes, your videos do irritate me, because you knowingly keep lying to people and just keep pushing to cash in on people who don't know any better. You are a shyster and I think people should publicly shame you for the lies you keep telling. May the great hand of karma smacks you across the face. Be good to people, don't be a shyster.
I usually put, 7 hole in all my belts. Call them extra 2 holes, Holiday Adjustments!! Lol. Summer and Winter weights...
I hate Wally World anyway!! Lol. One day, that will be all there is, selling inferior China made crap, and pure poison ingredients in 99% all their foods!! Horrible.. but, for non- perishable goods, kind a hard not to give them money
Majority of people see word-- Genuine, and think, oh its the best!! Lol
Dang, Stacks!! Lot hard judging going on here in comments!! My opinion... i been doing lot belts.. but i never buy blanks.. purchase, Water Buffalo Bends..[ found great source for wide/long dyed bends], but mostly, i used 13/15oz skirt or firm harness or bridle sides.. luv this heavy leather. All my belts end up literally being heirloom items.. makes lot outdoor / bushcraft gear.. im disabled, so leathercrafting is just big hobbie that's getting out a hand!! Lol. 2 of these heavy duty belts, pay for entire side.. but everything going, up and up.. crazy world we live in... thanks Stacks!! Enjoy humorous tutorials
Oh, i joined your newsletter also..im bout hooked up!! Hopefully in January, i can afford join ya'll club!! Have Blessed Day!!
Stacks, have you ever worked with-- Indian Alum Tanned hide?? Awesome leather, if your into lacing your projects!! Has a yellow colored core, thatcis phenomenal looking for lacing.. the one i purchased was Burgundy.. have just recently found a light tan. Run around 5/6 oz. Sides.. just curious if youve used any. Trying to find or decide what to make with pieces of this leather.... cant use it on sheaths or holsters, etc.. think im gonna try a kool valet tray, with the flesh side up, use brass horse- shoe, screw , d-rings.. shoukd be different, anyway!! Lol. Thanks for your great humor and tips!! Wish you lived near, Bonham, Tejas!! Be kool to take some craft lessons and share idea's!! Thanks, Stacks!!
Hey, Stacks!! I've been wondering where you been!!?? Dang!! I thought I hit subscribe button, while back.. and evidently, I did not!! Well, I'm subscribed now!! Lol. I enjoy watching your vids, you remind me of myself..lol. don't know if that good thing or not!!?? Lol. Gonna say good thing!! I'll be able to find your vids that I've missed!! Thanks
Good morning bigstacks I'm having trouble emailing you. Thank you I like your video on the belt my son tells me he keeps buying belts from Walmart and they kept breaking so that's why I made my first belt.but I like your Idea of buying the blanks all ready cut and the keepers are cheap
@wendelbeatty1144; Try hitting me up on social media on FB or IG @bigstacksshop. Yeah, Wal-Mart belts suck. That genuine leather is going to crack within 4-6 months of regular wear.
thanks for the video Big
I need some help with baseball leather.
As leather craftsmen we know our product is the "real deal" but I think the Walmart belt is just fine. There appears to be a significant amout of real leather, commensurate with the price. The top part which we see is not real leather so I find that distasteful, but I challenge anyone to build a comparable belt they could sell at any profit.
If we sold this product we would be sued for false advertising. The belt claims to be full grain leather and is not. Any small shop would cease to be trying to do this. Trying to beat the bottom, is a race to the bottom.
Feel like if you're doing this for a small business, it wouldn't take long to invest in a press cutter.
You can do that as well. It's all about saving time. If it saves you enough time to justify the expense, it's worth it.
Hey from Western Ky. Newbie to the hobby.
Nice to meet you. If you sign up for my newsletter, I'll send you some leather templates so you can get some new projects. Details are in the video description.
Have you tested it to see if it will work for rivet/eyelet/grommet setters?
@ChunkyJo I haven't yet, but that is a great idea. Thank you for sharing.
How heavy is that is you don’t mind ? And is it actually solid steel or like a cheap metal alloy ? Cause for $65 bucks can’t see how it would be a solid quality punch
@joshuaferia8972 It's fairly heavy. Body and base are made of cat iron. The main post is definitely steel. Handles and such may be an alloy. I'm going to keep it for sure.
@@bigstacksshophow long did it approx take to get it delivered ? Since the time you placed the order ? And do you have a link for the exact one you have ? I can really use this instead of sitting there and smashing my mallet down on things whilst my dog barking like a maniac lol
@joshuaferia8972 I think it was a two day delivery. Check the video comments for an exact link. Thank you for asking.
Wouldn't it make more sense to use snaps or the screw together rivets for belt buckles. In case the buyer might want to change buckles
@markostroff8845 Thank you for sharing This is a great idea and I can totally see where you are coming from. One of the 12 was made with Chicago screws at special request. I just did not have time to go into everything I really wanted to in the video. Not a lot of people in my local area wear western buckles. I usually sell two different options, the "Buffalo Belt" (riveted buckle) and the "Western Belt" (snaps and no buckle included). I sell them 10 Buffalo to maybe 1 Western, so it's not in high demand here.
I started leather working a few months ago. My first project was a coin purse, my own design and patterns. Stitching looks good and is straight, edge burnishing is nice looking, made a stop bead from maple. It will hold up to $30 in quarters. I'm 56 and a life long hobby junkie. Plastic model cars, radio controlled cars, boats, aircraft. Glass blowing, sewing, auto and motorcycle restoration. Welding and fabrication. The list is long and I still do most everything except radio controlled stuff due to over regulation and lack of people actually interested in building their own toys, everything these days is about instant gratification. When I start a new hobby it's a commitment and I'm all in. In six months or so I've dropped some bank on tools, equipment and leather. I don't understand why you dissed Hobby Lobby leather though. They sell a lot of high quality leather and a lot nice scrap that is nice sized and good quality. I've spent more than $2k on leather from hobby lobby and I'm very well stocked on large hides, some of this leather is very nice quality. I'm currently working on designing a hand bag for my wife. I'm a fast learner and my past hobbies put me far ahead on overall skills. My point being, not everyone needs to start with the most basic project, we all start. I'm currently learning to use snaps and rivits and so far this has been the only thing I've found to have a lifted learning curve, so far so good. I have to say, I'm loving this hobby and I'm happy I took the dive.
@claytonpratt1312 I'm not totally knocking hobby lobby leather. They do have some decent selections, but a bit overpriced for the good stuff. I only buy it when it's on sale. They do have some inexpensive cuts which really suck, but the price is definitely right for a beginner just getting started. I'm much like you, I am a hobby nut. My shop size is what limits me. I don't like to get rid of tools, so I can fix most anything with what's in my garage.
Thank you for your comment
I made two and they work perfectly. we use them all the time. and the materials i had laying around. PS... those stitching holes you punched are big enough to drive a semi through lol.
@wolfewisper Lol. They are big holes, but don't really require me to push an all through them. Thank you for sharing.
Swatch handles and keep best blade which handle is more comfortable.🤔
@ralphdixon-y2c I love that idea. I'm getting ready to record a follow up video, please subscribe so you won't miss it.
there is NO WAY that the material costs are 31 bucks for one of those belts. seriously. I know what the hardware costs and the leather costs, Ive been doing leather since the late 90's. a far more accurate material cost for one of those belts is around 17-23 dollars. I dont know where you are sourcing your stuff from, but if you truly paid that much for materials, they are ripping you off in a big way.
@orion7741 That is an exact calculation, my friend. It includes the belt blank, belt loop, buckle, rivets, and shop supplies. I also added shipping because it is considered part of the supply cost. My belt price is $77 based on my labor rate, materials cost, and overhead.
its just straight up dishonest to put out a post that says you only have 4 spots left for belts, and then go on to take orders from 12 people and make 12 belts.... dude, seriously. that is extremely bad business and you are dupeing people with a dishonest tactic. when people learn that, its going to leave a bad taste in their mouth over you and it will drive customers away from you instead of drawing them in. its just shameful behaviour and something that we expect from massive retail outlets, not hand made stuff from real people. not cool, not cool at all on your part. just be honest and straight up with people, dont try and reel people in with dishonest tactics and crap like you did....
@orion7741 There is no dishonesty sir. I had four people who wanted belts from me before I made the post. I had intended to make eight total, which would have been four more. But then I had eight more requests from my personal Facebook page. You don't turn away business at that point, especially from family and friends.
well, it is done so much that it's a common practice on line now.
Sorry, this is laughable if you actually have a degree in business. I don't have one but actually own a successful business and understand the principles of business and profit. I do leathercraft both as an enjoyable hobby and a business. It's another branch of my business. I treat it the same way as my other businesses. You gave away business profit and lowered the value of YOUR product in the eyes of the market. Were it actually worth the 77 dollars you said it was, you would not have a "sale". You can't go to Walmart or Kohl's and buy a custom handmade belt. You are not competing with Walmart or Kohl's. But you are attempting to compete on price. Does Lamborghini compete with Chevy? Nope. Both may be cars, but neither on the same playing field as the other. Your degree should have taught you to see that difference. It's obvious in your own mind, you can't see the difference in your belt and one for sale at Walmart. So long as you hold that mindset, you will only be able to achieve mediocre success. That and you need to get better with your book keeping. Your numbers don't jive. Your labor is a grossly under estimated. You make more money per hour when you add machines to cut labor. You account for zero overheads. No business has zero overheads. No business operates on zero profit margins. What "good" are you doing for people when you treat this like a garage sale, rather than a business? You aren't teaching anyone to take this serious and to be successful at this. At the end of the day, this video looks more like a sales pitch for your "template" then it actually looks like a video to teach people how to make money. Yes, I realize I am being critical, but I\m tired of people treating leathercrafting like it's some clown show. The amount of BAD information outnumbers the good. Most of the people talking about the "business" end of it, are fools and give bad information. This video is one of them. You don't make money when you cut out profits, lower the value of your products, and encourage people only to buy when you have a "sale". You have taken a giant, steaming dump on your business and your product. If your belts were so good, you would not be selling them for a cut price. "Sale" means this product is not worth it's normal price. It means "I am desperate and I'll lower my price". It means no one wants this at my normal price, please take this junk off my hands. You understand little about business. You are just here to profit on the ignorant who know less than you. Sell them templates, sell them courses. That's why you are here. LMAO.
Good idea friend
Thank you very much, my friend!
I'm gonna try that out buddy.... I got a boxer pup thats 10 months and is killing my yard with these dang wholes.... Frustrated
@shocker14369 It can be frustrating. Keep at it if he keeps digging holes. I've found covering the first turd is just the start. He'll eventually stop.
The Big Stacks Belt Template saves me a lot of time when making belts. bigstacks-shop.fourthwall.com/products/belt-template-1-5-34?source=dashboard
Make sure you use out of the back because any thing else will stretch. If someone used 9 ounce out of a belly it's going to stretch bad. A double back bend if your cutting your own belts.
@robbflint3022 This is a very good point. I need to do a video about the different parts of a hide and features and benefits of each one.
Hi there. Really like your videos. They are always very informative. I have a couple of questions. Should you always line a belt? If so, then the total should still be 8-10oz? If you don’t line the belt, how should you finished the backside of the belt? Dye? Tan kote? Tokenole? What do you recommend for unlined belts?
@milom.2057 Wow, let me try to answer all your questions. Belts do not need to be lined. The belt blanks I buy are finished on the flesh (back) side, so I usually just leave them like they are. They are also already dyed. Belts don't need to be lined, but they need to be durable. If you are using thinner leather then 8-10 oz, definitely double them up and stitch.
@ I’m trying to cut my own belt straps from a hide that is not dyed. So the back is not finished or dyed. Just trying to figure out what to do with the back side.
@milom.2057 How rough is the back side?
@ not too bad actually. Some tokonole would definitely make it look finished. I’m thinking dip dye the straps and then tokonole. Probably easiest thing to do. Thanks for your reply and great videos
@milom.2057 That sounds like a plan. Tan kote probably will as well. Thank you for the kind words.
OK, now do a video of removing copper rivets because the buckle is not on correctly.
@troybays5594 Here is the original video for that clip, where I did show how to drill out a copper rivet after you make a mistake. ruclips.net/video/B-ecfCwRaJU/видео.htmlsi=0diJWAHMGkfbTkBT
So, how does one do a lined and stitched belt?
@main11gear I've honestly never made one before, but it seems like you would adhere the flesh sides of both pieces together and stitch then along the edge.
Good looking belts fellow southpaw!
@7961915 I appreciate it my friend. Though, I'm not a leftie. This was one of my first videos and the camera was recording a reverse image, lol
Great video. You make it look easy. My question is when getting the length of the belt for someone else should I ask for their existing belt size, pants size or should I ask for them to measure their waist size? Person is from out of town.
@rayhamilton It all depends on how much you like gambling. If you like to gamble, just ask them their waist size and pray it works out. If you are not a gambler, check out my latest community post on RUclips, or visit my Facebook or Instagram page. @bigstacksshop I just posted a graphic which makes it super easy to measure for any belt size. You can even share a link with them so they can see for themselves.
Thank you.
@raybhamilton Anytime my friend. A lot of people will try and resist the measurement of their current belt. I don't know if it's because they don't feel like doing it, it's a hassle, or they don't want to face any possible weight gain they've had. But be insistant, I've never had an issue when this was measured properly.
Does any one have any advise for making a wallet
@Tjrice-w5p First decide what kind of wallet you'd like to make. Bi-fold, biker wallet, or minimalist wallet. One you decide what kind of wallet you'd like to make, you will find the rest of the stuff will be easier to decide on.
Super nice tools
Thank you very much, my friend!
Made my first belt a few days a go for my son and it would have been alot easier of i would have seen you video on measuring it first but i think your template would have made it a little easier l will be looking for them .thanks your videos are a lot of help. What the best way to make a belt holder at the end ?
@wendellbeatty1144 That's awesome you made your first belt, congratulations. If you decide to make the belt keeper, I usually take a piece of the strap I cut off and make it from that. Usually 1/2" wide is good. Skive each end of the this piece where they overlap and fasten them together. You can sew them together, but I usually use a double capped rivet. You can also sometimes buy then, and they are fairly inexpensive when you figure how much time they are to make. In my upcoming video, I am shooting for $100/hr, so it was a no brainer to go ahead and buy them. Don't forget to subscribe if you want to check out the video. Thank you for your question.
@wendellbeatty1144 Congratulations, you are one of the Belt Template Winners! Please email me, the email address is in my profile.
Looks like they would make making the belts a little faster and easier marking the holes
@wendellbeatty1144 They do make the layout so much easier and faster. Thank you for your comment.
I like my cheese drippy bruh
Only with nachos. Otherwise, shred it and melt it.
Was that buckle fixed right? I see the pin was facing wrong side. I enjoyed the video though.
@jamhurikongo2758 Ha! You caught me ... I used an old video for that portion where I did, in fact, put the buckle on backward. In that that original video I did show people how to drill out rivets as well. Keen eye, my friend.
it really helps to have a rag with bees wax and coat the punch with bees wax and after several holes and it gets hard to pull off again just wipe the rag around punch and continue. thanks for video
@jenkins1979 Thank you very much for the advice. I use a beeswax block on my punches. Do you use pure beeswax on the punch or do you melt it down with an oil so it's more supple?
you can melt some on a rag or I also have just twisted it in a block of bees wax .I works equally as well
@jenkins1979 I I currently use the block method, but I'm going to have to try the melted wax method.
what are the best leathers to use to prevent too much stretching? Also in a hide where is it best to cut to prevent the same problem? thank you Big.
@jenkins1979 These are some amazing questions. I unfortunately do not have concrete answers for you. Every leather I've used has seemed to stretch over time. My best guess would be to use a durable part of the hide, such as the shoulders, to prevent stretching. But it may be hard to find leather without any stretch. I'd like to know if anyone in the Big Stacks Family of makers had a good answer to this question. What say you, fam?
Yeah, it kills me when I see some of these leather crafters offer patterns but either copyright it or limit how many you can sell. Mean while it isn't much different than any other pattern. Here's a tip, find leather crafters who offer their patterns for free or cheap. Follow them on RUclips!
@revann33. Thank you for sharing. As long as they are simple plans that aren't too unique, I will most likely not charge for them. But they may only be snakeskin for a limited time. Some of my more unique or details plans may end up with a modest price tag, just because it does take time and effort to produce them.
@revann33. But I do copyright them because I don't want someone to turn around and claim them s their own or sell them. There are some scumbags out there. 🤣🤣🤣
@revann33 I just reread your question and noticed I missed something. I'm my opinion, limiting how many you can sell is borderline criminal if you charge for the plans. I've seen this before and I hate it. This isn't a photograph, which is easily copied at a photo mart. This is something you still have to make by hand using skills that take time to learn and master. Just my 2 cents.
@@revann33 Theres a guy named Dieselpunkro who knows most ten and then you have to purchase that pattern again for copyright.
@handmade83 He makes some really beautiful things out of leather. I just want my viewers to know once you buy a pattern from me, you should be able to make as many as you want.
I'm lucky enough to have grow up in a leather shop in 1973 to 1989. I just started back into leather a little over 2 years ago with my wife. I had a lot to relearn.
That is so awesome. Do you find yourself recalling a lot of it?
@@bigstacksshop yes I did some things, I've watched some videos and read some of the old Al stohlmans books I had also. My wife picked it up pretty quick as well. I was lucky enough to have a building we made a shop out of. We did buy a Weaver 303 sewing machine. Also bought some new tools mainly a couple good knives and scalpel. I'm still cleaning up some of the tools from the 1970's and getting ready to buy a servo motor for a 24-188 singer we have to slow it down.
@robbflint3022 Sounds like you are on the right track. I might be calling on you if I ever look for a sewing machine Sounds like you know your stuff.
Is it more cost effective to cut the belts straight from the larger hide? I would assume it is, but when you factor everything in, what is your opinion?
@dsimms6 Cutting belt blanks isn't really hard if you have a strap cutter. But, by the time you finish the edges and cut the holes for the buckle end, you will find that the cost for the actual belt blank is really low. This is especially true when you consider how much time you have saved by buying them ready to go. Your time is worth money if you are a crafter seeking their items.
@dsimms6 Congratulations, you are one of the Belt Template Winners! Please email me, the email address is in my profile.

how do the buckle end of belt differ with different buckles?
The biggest difference would be the number of prongs. If you would be using a double prong buckle you would need to cut the holes yourself.
How long does it take to make a belt?
@kcarl8982 When using one of these pre-punched belt blanks, it usually takes me about 30 minutes to make a belt from start to finish. I don't rush, because that's when mistakes happen. And, the belt template will probably save you a lot of time in laying or your hole patten and the tip of the belt. So maybe mt belt building time will be around 20-25 minutes with the template
Can one do tooling on these buffalo belt blanks from Weaver's Leather?
@kcarl8982 You would be best buying veg tan leather belt straps if you want want to tool your own belt. They are less expensive and the tooling will come out much cleaner on them. You can always dye them any color your would like after you are finished tooling.
