UK TROPICAL GARDEN
I'm a novice gardener who bought a house 4 years ago, I thought about creating a tropical garden with lots of vibes to relax in. So now I think the garden is at a decent stage to share how I created it, with also the good and bad points. Also how to buy and propogate cheap plants and watch them grow, as the times we are in are very expensive. Please enjoy my channel Matt 🌺 🌴 🌞 🌴

PLANTING FARGESIA ROBUSTA CAMPBELL & SEEING MY BORDER COME ALIVE
Hi Matt, fabulous as usual. Enjoy your wonderful garden and thanks for inspiring me with my own tropical garden. Hope your back is good. lol Shauna
Cheers videos are very slow have a big building project on the garden at the moment. Trying to get everything sorted out. I got the statues from tikiheadz. Me back is still on the mend keep pushing myself but stop when it kills. Thanks for asking 🙂
Great video love how it's coming on, love the statues as well where did you get them. Keep the videos coming good watching
Thanks Ted. The garden has been a real challenge this year. Trying to transform it again and upgrade as I go. The tiki heads you can find him on ebay and Instagram called tikiheadz hope it helps 👍
Beautiful garden, hope to see a lot of videos!👍🌴
Thanks you. The garden is currently in construction this year. But will do a full garden update soon 🌴 🌞
You're not doing very well with these are you 😂 ...hope they have grown back i have had the same problem with one
No terrible after that years freeze, they have recovered very slowly re shooting from the base. Most of the cordylines where I live that year were taken back to the ground. It was just to cold 🥶
That's what happened with mine aswell be fair 😂 glad to hear they're on the mend
Same with yours growing away, glad I just didn't dig them out and bin them, thought they might of shot up this year
Lots of inspiration there for you Matt 😄👍🏻
It was amazing walking round. I wish I could grow some of them. They just won't survive here to cold and wet. But we can always tweak and grow alternative plants that will survive our climate 🌧 🌦 we need more 🌞
The Hespera is from the northern Mexico southern Texas, very durable plant ,haven't had any issues, very prolific off shoot production...
Thanks again. The yuccas I'm currently growing managed with no issues this winter. Now they are in the ground they should be me hardier once they have rooted
@@mattsuktropicalgarden The Yucca Bacatta is my favorite, stunning blooms, it's a heavy weight non- trunking ground dweller can get 4 to 5 feet across and tall when in a happy spot...
Wow can't believe how expensive they are here, they do look stunning
@@mattsuktropicalgarden Indeed! A Yucca Faxon here in a 20 gallon pot is 169.00. The others 49.00 5 gallon, 29.00 2 gallon. There's a small nursery here w/limited selection 1 gallon @ 20.00...Have you tried propagation from seed?
Now that's a good idea. Might try a little propagator once I've got my garden sorted out. Brilliant 👏
Great! The Faxon, Bacatta and Elata are Native to the Region and can handle the wild Temp swings we experience in the winter...😊
How lovely
It really was. A nice little place to visit. Get in the shade. Look at spectacular scenery 😍
Cordylines fail here in New Mexico, gets to cold, Yucca Faxon, Baccata and Hespera hold up very well😊
Cordylines fail here in New Mexico, gets to cold, Yucca Faxon, Baccata and Hespera hold up very well😊
Thanks very much for commenting. I will check those yuccas out you have mentioned. I have several different types of yuccas growing. I'm always on the search for more hardy plants thankyou 👍
Love the Canaries Matt. Went to Gran Canaria 15 years ago. Superb palmy walkway. Love the various phoenix palms, the reclinata on the right a stunner. Love the adaptability of the Chaemarops palms flanking the path, at home in a desert dry environment with external watering but will also thrive in my heavy North East clay. Enjoy your hols mate
Can't believe I have been here so many times. First time I have walked onto the dunes this way. Was truly a spectacular walk through. I wish I had a bigger garden 😕
Looks lovely, beats going work for sure 😄👍🏻 nice video 👍🏻
Can't believe all the years we av been going there, have never been through this entrance
Looking amazing, well done on your efforts. A fantastic transformation.
Cheers thanks very much. See how the plants take to where they are. Onwards now to the next job
Garden looks brilliant Well done 👍🏻
Thank you very much can't wait for it to mature over the next few years
Brilliant love those steel edgings and how they rust, thinking about an island myself!! Looks brilliant!!
Cheers thank you, they will rust over time. It does bring a totally different look and feel. In time it will blend.
Great stuff Matt, looks good 👍🏻
Thanks mate, onto the next job soon, we need some sunshine
Looks good!
Cheers it took me long enough, but no rush we need some sun now to get it growing
Looking great 👍
Thank you hopefully I can bring the rest of the garden up to how I have made this look
Absolutely love the planting, the colours, frond shapes, great contrast. Really sharp, high end finish. Superb 👏 👍
Thanks mate that's a great complement coming from your experience. I do hope I have got it right and it isn't to cramped. Need enough space for them to grow out and high
@mattsuktropicalgarden I think your planting density is spot on. Some of them will take a while to get going so you wouldn't want lots of dead space anyway. The foliage contrasts will work better planted close👍
Cheers thanks for the advice. I'm always over thinking. It always a learning curve what works, survives etc.
Great job Matt!
Thanks it took some working out. Like a big jigsaw. Need everything to root now in the ground and get growing big
It looks great mate 👍
Cheers. Nearly there now. Can't wait to finish it of.
Looking very good 👍
Thank you, it's coming together. Nearly completed my first little garden project of the year. Was a bit bigger than I planned
waw looking good! great work Matt!
Thanks Dimi. Took me ages to work the design out. Fingers crossed all the plants will thrive and grow away big and strong
@@mattsuktropicalgarden I hope for you. But you know my thoughts about the cordylines. Never again in my garden 😅. I bought 3 trachycarpus wagnerianus (it was 2 + 1 free, 40€) these are much more stronger against the wind than the basic trachycarpus.
That's a really good price. Everything has gone up here. I found the cordyline for £8 the last one I will buy. My damaged ones from a few years ago are still here just.
i like your channel and i like what you are doing with your garden ... problem for me is all the talking ... this is what I'm doing ... this is what I've done etc ... why not set the camera up on a tripod and show you doing the actual work instead of just talking about it? that isn't meant as a pop at you ... just I think it would make the channel more interesting to watch . I'm a long term subscriber but find I'm starting to jump forward through your videos these days. as I said, not having a go just offering a suggestion to make the videos more interesting. cheers 👍
Thanks for the feedback. Exactly what I'm after interaction with viewers. I will try and film more in the future with me getting stuck in. I try to show the before and afters because I keep changing me mind when I get going
Looks cracking mate 👌👌 will really have the wow factor once the yucca's & cordys put on some height 🏝🏝
I really hope so. Patience is a virtue. Watch it all mature over the next couple of years
Matt the garden is looking fantastic really all coming together. Great Job well done.
Thanks for commenting. The garden has taken a big turn this year so far. I'm glad what I have done so far works and it all ties together. I think it does. Keep doin more every week to try and keep improving 🌞
@@mattsuktropicalgarden your garden has really come along way in just a year. Enjoying watching the progress thank you 👍
Another great video, Matt! I agree the price of compost is through the roof!
Cheers, I can't believe how expensive some stuff is. I've been watching your videos 👍 by the way great content. Trying to keep the cost down this year I have a massive building project to start once I've got this bit sorted, bar area and patio. It seems like never ending work at the moment. But will be worth it in the end.
@@mattsuktropicalgarden thanks! Yeah all the hard work is already paying off. Look forward to seeing more projects!
Great job Matt. Looking classy👍
Thanks mate. My steel rings have turned up, hopefully when I get them down my vision of what I'm hoping will work 🙏
Really taking shape Matt, you can see the dedication 👍🏻
Cheers Marc. Hopefully will be able to walk around and enjoy it soon. Just hope we have some sunshine 🌞
amazing how quick your garden has matured already. I love the changes you have been making. They definitely are for the better 🙂
Thank you Richard it's always good to hear positive feedback. It is coming on now. Couple more weekends at it to go yet 👍
The music is unbearable
This is one of my very first videos. I'm always trying to make better choices
Fantastic video matt! Loving the Tiki style statues
I'm always on the search for tiki style statues. Problem is doesn't seem to be many on sale. Or I'm just looking in the wrong places. I would love to have a few more in my garden 🌴
@@mattsuktropicalgarden I think I need to get my first one!
If you find any let me know. Lucky hunting
Put in a frog pond, frogs eat slugs etc, and water is the best 4 nature in general ❤🐸
Hi Sarah I was actually thinking about adding a little pond into the garden. For exactly that reason. Just need to find a place to put one. Thanks for commenting 🌴🌞
@@mattsuktropicalgarden me too, there's a nature gardening channel I've been following they have Gr8 info. It can be tiny and u don't need pumps, just the right planting to oxygenate and some local frog spawn, but I have a small river near to me, it might be worth thinking about whether the wider habitat is good for frogs. Otherwise there are surely other natural slug predators to encourage?
@@mattsuktropicalgarden I'm definitely putting in a frog hotel too😀it's a place for all invertebrates to safely hibernate underground. A year ago I had a frog obviously looking fir a place to hibernate and I didn't know what to do. But definitely I think adding water to the garden will bring in an entire ecosystem of creatures, just with a barrel pond as long as they can safely get in and out
@@mattsuktropicalgarden frog hotels take up no space because they're underground, you can plant on top of them
My hostas are planted by ferns, and they still got munched lol, i now use neem oil, seems to work too!! Gardens starting to look good :)
So Alan is wrong then lol. I've got loads of neem oil just dilute a bit in watering can is it?. The garden is starting to take more shape. Should be there over the next few weekends. The misses wants the bar open 🫣 needs a lot of work to get that area sorted. Will get there.
@@mattsuktropicalgarden lol i dunno about Alan being wrong, but it didnt work for me, it might be different for you, let us know how you get on?! As for neen oil, i mix with 1 tbsp washing up liquid, when thats mixed through i then add about 2 tbsp neem oil, Good Luck!!
I will thanks for getting back to me. I will try that mix 👍
@@mattsuktropicalgarden Hey Matt, Scrap the idea of neem oil, ive been out this morning, and overnight the slugs have eaten a whole plant!!! Grrrr, ill try the grit or seashells next i think lol!! Good luck with yours.
Oh no. Another idea didn't work. Keep trying different methods. There has to be way
That looks really good matt, well done 😊
Its coming together at last. Doing more to it now the sun is out 🌞
Bollocks titch is talking out his ass I have hostas and dryopsis in the same bed and slugs still pissing me off, that said I can't prove how bad it would have been without the ferns! I do however get a bag full with beer slug traps a week.
Looking great Matt, really taking shape now, good old Alan titchmarsh 😀👍🏻
Cheers mate let's see if Alan is right, hopefully he is 👍
Great job Matt!
Thanks a lot. Can't wait to get cracking and doing more to it. It coming on now slowly 👍
You've broken the garden up into great spaces it'll look bigger as a result I'm sure. Great work, enjoy a beer. You deserve it after all that graft👍
Trying to create different views so it makes me walk around and see from different angles. Also trying to work where the sun shines at different times of the day. I will av a big beer when I go on holiday soon 🍺 🍻
@@mattsuktropicalgarden 🤣🤣. I did the same mate once the kids didn't need the grass for the footy. I built the first sitting area with the firepit facing south and divided up the space with raised beds to have the same effect. Enjoy your hols
Great work Matt. You've defined the spaces great with the lawn. The island of evergreen to look at is a great idea. Crap weather takes up so much of the year that an evergreen tropical view pays it's weight in gold over time. Good luck with the project mate
That's it. We have a lot more wetter days that warmer dryer days. Just trying to get the look right with more hardier less fussy plants. It's coming along slowly, didn't think it would take this long but I will keep plodding on bit by bit. No rush that's what I say.
Looking great 😊
Thank you for commenting. It's taking longer than I thought but slowly making progress this year
looking good Matt👍
Its slowly taking shape couple more weekends hard work and I think I might ve there for the back bit of the garden
Awesome work Matt, looking great!
Thanks mate, a lot of hard work. It's starting to take a bit of shape. Couple more weekends graft to go yet
Great garden Matt! That's a lot a work!! It's raining again here in Belgium, I hope to get some sun soon, I would like to plant my new Yucca Rostrata and get a new trachycarpus wagnerianus
Hi yes getting there slowly. Hard work indeed moving that lot about, hopefully it will look better this year. I'm the same except the weather is great here at the moment, can't wait to get yuccas etc in the ground. It will be your turn for the nice weather soon
It’s coming on well Matt, thanks for the plants you gave me, I have filmed a short video but not edited it yet, still need to create the channel for it 🤣 great video, the effort is paying off 👍🏻
Cheers Marc. Oohhh exciting a new garden channel on RUclips. How about calling it the tropical non gardener lol 😆
@@mattsuktropicalgarden that would work 🤣👍🏻
I have a green coryline with brown leaves coming from the middle how do I save this? Several leaves still green and stalk is still strong.
Awesome and a great selection of plants. My garden is at the same stage.. ready for big changes, plants, half finished greenhouses and other half semi complete jobs everywhere! The bar is however open :-)
I was so tempted to get the bar open yesterday. But if that happened I would of never got any work done 🍺 🍻. I always find my garden is never done always looking at wss to improve but the cost of everything is sooo expensive so trying to find cheaper ways
@@mattsuktropicalgarden Yeah man I feel ya! I spent so much money on palms recently, but have found a few new and interesting contacts :-) Also looking at cheap climbers in the supermarkets.
I got my honeysuckle dropmore scarlet from Morrisons. By my bar took a while to get growing last year but that could be due to lack of light. Always good to have contacts if you can buy cheaper stuff 👌 👍
@@mattsuktropicalgarden Fantastic! Denfinately try to get hold of some honeysuckle Lornica it is well hardy, evergreen and fast growing (I have tested in the last 12 months) .Apparently I have picked up an evergreen Virginia Creeper from Morrisions today. I don't think they areevergreen, but do know the15 meters length is probably spot on! Great for privacy and saves money vs palms - £2.50 lol.
Loving how you've fan trained that honeysuckle, and your garden is fantastic. Really enjoyed this, thank you.
Hello and thank you, the honeysuckle I only did a few weeks ago, was cut right back, hopefully it will get into growth soon. The garden is coming along slowly. Big changes being made at the moment 🌴
Yes looks great.. a very interesting idea.
Thank you, trying to give the garden a more tropical, jungle feel. Make it all blend together a bit more 🌞
Slugs paradise 😮
Arrggghhh yes certainly some plants to get eaten alive, usually the hostas, I do go round and cut away the damaged leaves once things get more established. Can't Stop the slugs munching
Thats looking great 👍
Thank you so much. Fingers 🤞 it will come together a bit more this year. Always try to make improvements little bits at a time 🌴 🌞
looking good. can you show us a work in progress wgen you swap your plants around?
I only use my phone to record on. I have done a little bit of recording today when I have been digging away, I will try to show bits of when I going along, thanks for commenting 😀 👍 🌴
@@mattsuktropicalgarden nice one ... maybe set your phone to record with time-lapse function ;-)
