Make sence. Good Feeling this Guy!
Thanks for hanging out & watching! (And for the comment!)
Love your groove man and all of your drumkit and cymbals, all the cymbals
Thanks Roger!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻 I appreciate ya!!
It's a matter of appearance. I will wgaer that if the player or listener were blinded the sound difference would be indistinquishable . In short, there is no real difference. Some enterprising videoer should do a blinded test video.
Feel free to watch this version with your eyes closed (ruclips.net/video/sGr25p5jxto/видео.htmlsi=r-ZfqnZlOT4-Yrwg). It’s only the performances and none of the talking. I’ll guarantee that, if you’re listening with a set of studio monitors or some really good home stereo speakers, you will hear the difference. That’s the reason for the video. Your opinion may differ about which one you like better, but there’s definitely a difference.
Cool Thanks for the post
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!
Very interesting and enlightening. If I have to say something negative though… the point of the exercise, with sound clips and all, could have been made in half the time…
Then what you’re looking for is this version of this video: ruclips.net/video/sGr25p5jxto/видео.html
I’d really like that cymbal
Thanks! Me too! Just used it on another batch of recordings today.
I noticed that the dirty one had a bit more attack than the clean one. I personally prefer hearing the individual hits rather than it being one long sustained sound (except when I have to do a roll). Would gaff tape shorten the sustain and also bring back the attack, or only shorten the sustain? And a question unrelated to cleaning: one of the cymbals in our band has an uneven spot at the underside, right at the edge (it's not a crack, but it feels like a bump, clothes catch on to it when I'm setting up). Do I have to start looking for a replacement, or do I not have to worry because it's most likely not going to crack?
You hear more attack because the sustain on the dirty cymbal is muted. A little waffle of gaff tape would essentially bring that sound back on the cleaner cymbal. Not sure about that spot in your cymbal but usually that sort of thing is trouble just waiting to happen, especially if you hit pretty hard.
@@BrianStephensOfficial Thanks :) I'm in a windband as AUX percussionist, so no need to hit the cymbal like a metal drummer does... Just some rolls with soft mallets (sometimes I have to go loud though), and the occasional hit (in music where I don't have time to grab the cyms à 2, because having to play another instrument right before. That's often with wooden stick, but again, not really hitting hard)
I play primarily metal and hard rock .. I prefer the old 60's 70's zild. Avid. CRASH-- actually, dirty sounds better ( in my opinion) the darker sound and quick decay works well with the style. that said.. for hats splashes and accent I do prefer clean.. the cut is brighter ... Thanks for the vid...its the style of music and sound your lookin for... break a leg!
Thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave a comment. There’s tons of other great drum vids on my channel for ya!
Why do mine sound more like a gong then a cymbal?
I’m guessing that they’re really thick. What cymbals are you using?
@@BrianStephensOfficial im new to drums so im gonna try my best to give you good descriptions but, all sabian 20/51 16/41 and 14/36
@@jacksondernar1984 Are they from the B8 line of Sabians?
@@BrianStephensOfficial yes they are why? Are they bad?
@@jacksondernar1984 Not bad. They’re entry level cymbals and, like most, have that sonic quality that you’re talking about. (More gong than crash) Lots of people thinks it’s the B8 alloy that’s the problem, but Paiste makes some awesome sounding B8 alloy cymbals. With a little more lathing & hammering, those Sabian B8’s could sound like a much more expensive cymbal. But that said, part of a higher priced cymbal’s price tag is the amount of work that goes into making it, especially during the hammering & lathing phases.
Taylor is offering their 50th Anniversary model for $4,000. It does not sound a bit better than the Sire.
You’re making me feel even *better* about this purchase!! (I loved this guitar so much that I ordered an A4 Grand Auditorium last month as well. It sounds a little different than this one but is equally good)
what about the black ones, i’m looking into those as the red ones don’t match my kit. what do you think about the black ones????? any difference
No sonic difference at all. Only cosmetic. Go get ‘em!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Good stuff!
Thanks, buddy!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
sounds awesome man
Thanks, buddy!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
@@BrianStephensOfficial np man your channel is a gem loved the squirt jazz master video
Were wool gloves 🧤to protect your cymbals.
Cotton gloves can work too! 😉
@@BrianStephensOfficial yup I remember some famous drummer I didn’t remember who but that’s what he was saying.
I really could tell the difference.it’s more brighter in sound when cleand ✨✨
Awesome! Mission accomplished. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!
Of course they cut some corners. These are budget guitars after all.
This one doesn’t seem to feel or sound like they cut any corners at all… unless maybe they paid the folks who made it a only dollar an hour to do it?! 😉🤫🤭
Squiers are fine these days, especially the $300-$450 models; the "cheapening out" areas that really affect anything are usually just cheaper tuners and the electronics but swapping out pickups and pots and stuff is pretty easy and a Squier is as good a place as any to learn that. The Paranormal series from Squier has been pretty cool, too; the Paranormal Cyclone has been my favorite modding platform. My biggest issue with these Squiers has just been that the Indian laurel fretboards often come to me pretty dire-looking and splintering around the edges. I've been really wanting to get one of those J. Mascis Jazzmasters, though, they look really cool.
This particular Squire feels and sounds a whole lot more expensive than it is. If it didn’t say “Squire” on the headstock, I’d think it was a regular Fender. Having tried a couple of other options last week at a local store (that did not have this model sadly), this one feels & sounds remarkably better than anything else in its price range.
that's otustanding ,till next time,;)
Thanks for stopping by! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Have sire a 4 love it plays sounds great high end sound comfortable neck pickup system excellent well done sire
It’s been a great guitar. So much so that I picked up the S4 Grand Auditorium model as well! (Didn’t do an unboxing video for that one though)
The increased sheen is awesome. Thats the subtle stuff that helps it cut in a mix.
I agree. It’s that extra little bit of *zing* that immediately helps that cymbal stand out in the mix without additional EQ or volume ramping. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!!
I think a clean cymbal makes some people feel better so they will sound better to them.
Does anyone have tips for permanent fingerprints? I bought a used set, and I can't get rid of the baked in prints
I’ve never seen “baked in prints” on cymbals, but you might want to try the Session Ace SHIMMER product. That stuff’s strong enough to clean boat hulls.
I sometimes Soak my Cymbals with different cleaning solutions for a Few Hours . It Works !!
What are your go-to cleaning solutions for this purpose?
Holy crap, I'm a Zildjian guy, and I want a set of these.
They’ll do that to ya!! 😉
@@BrianStephensOfficial I play mostly punk and dive in to a bit of metal, and play K Sweets, but man, I don't know how these sound so good compared to 2002 reds. I absolutely hate the zing those have
The differnce in sound is over than 20%, more like 40%. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching and double thanks for leaving a comment!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Don't clean your door handles or doors near the handle for a year... Yeah the door works but geezes... you have to do maintenance and cleaning on EVERYTHING YOU OWN so just do it
I agree. Thanks for watching and leaving some comments.
Don't need to use abrasives to get green rust off, there's chemical substances that do that, then polish afterwards
Biggest mistake most drummers make is to use abrasive cleaners. That Session Ace SHIMMER. Product does a great job of getting the “greenie meanies” off without being abrasive to the cymbal’s surface.
Dirty sounds better recorded. Clean sounds better live. Just my experience. I want cleaner brassier tones live, but deeper subdued tones on a recording. Pure personal preference.
Ultimately, personal preference is what this video is about. For me, the cleaned cymbal sounded better in the mix.
I'm using 2002 hats, and sig crashes, just bought the big beat 21 to go with them..always thought my 20 in sig ride was too dry, this BB sounds awesome..
Yep, I’ve got a 20” Sig from the late 90’s and it is definitely much drier than the BB. Great choices all around!
I have the grand auditorium version of the A4 it's anamazing guitar for around the £500 price point, the neck is amazing.
Cool! I think that one is going to be my next purchase. (Replacing a different Epiphone guitar I have in that body style)
Cool video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching! There’s an all new one with tons of sound examples, recorded down in my studio at : ruclips.net/video/-UAPfwxeOFU/видео.html
Using a full rack, only to have a tom in a snare basket, is the most cursed setup ive ever seen
I use the rack because I’m changing kits out here at my studio almost daily, depending on the recording session. (Mixing and matching between 14 different kits and 86 snares.) With the rack, I can go from a simple 4-piece kit to a full on 8-piece kit in under 5 minutes. Need to swap out a 20”x16” kick drum for a 24”x14” (or vice versa) without moving anything else? That rack makes it a breeze. Definitely not doing it to try and win any style points. I do have a couple of 13” vintage rack toms with no Tom mount on them. Hence the snare stand option. Maybe I should do a video to talk about that? I’ll make sure to tag you.
@@BrianStephensOfficial Hell yea. No, that makes total sense, and i agree with the logic, its just CURSED lol. You should do one!
Great discussion !
Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment! More to come!
I’m actually shopping for heads for my Sonor 503 kit now. I want red hydraulics on the batters on the kick and toms- but I guess I’ll need to do remo colortones on the rez heads to keep them all red. I’ve got deep mounted toms, so you’d see them from off stage because they’d need to be angled, hence me wanting red on the rez sides, too. I’ve never done this before, so I’m still learning. Hopefully I’m not making bad choices. 🤷♀️
Yeah, if you’re going red on the bottoms, I guess that Colortones are the way to go. I have no idea what they sound like. So, I couldn’t offer an opinion. I will say that the red Hydraulics sound the same as the other colors of Hydraulics. So, you could always go with clear Hydraulics instead. Or, if you dig black, black Hydraulics on the batter side and some of their black / Onyx choices for resonant heads might also be an option.
Is this product gentle on logos?
Yes, just don’t scrub directly across them and you’ll be just fine.
I have some dark rides and crashes how should I clean those non brilliant cymbals ? Thanks
Same product that I used in this video will work for those cymbals.
They are cymbals. Not cast iron skillets. Keep em clean for god sake lol.
Best reply yet. So good that *I* wished I’d come up with it!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤜🏻🤛🏻
This is content geared towards me! I loooooooove rewards programs like this! Excellent! 😻
Awesome!! Thanks for watching! I hope you get a ton of free stuff using their points. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Great video!!
Thanks Paul!!!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I love the darker tone of a well used, aged cymbal. My 18" Zildjians Crash and 20" Zildjians Crash-Rides from the 1970's have a nice dark patina on them. No dirt, just played and aged over decades. I wouldn't clean them if you paid me top dollar. However, after cleaning your cymbal , it was more aligned tonally with your newer cymbals.
The great thing about this method is that it doesn’t really mess with the patina of the aged metal itself. Just pulls all the gunk and grit off the cymbal & opens up the tone. And yep, those early 70’s Zildjians are quite special. I have a few in my studio inventory.
The name of Jeff’s band in high school was actually Rural Still Life not Stillwater. Stillwater was the fictitious band for the movie ‘Almost Famous.’ David Paich’s audition song for Jeff’s band was Joe Cocker’s ‘Feelin’ Alright.’
Cool. Thanks for the clarification. 🤜🏻🤛🏻
@@BrianStephensOfficial Great interview. It was my understanding that Jeff also lended his artistic skills to creating the Paiste Signature logo. Everything that man touched was a masterpiece.
What type of reso heads do you have under those toms?
Evans coated G2’s.
@@BrianStephensOfficial Thank you!
The best cymbal cleaner I've ever used is bar Keepers Friend...cheap and effective
Cool. Thanks for watching!
So I recently cleaned and polished my new beat hollow logos from the 80’s not because I thought they sounded bad but because I wanted to see them shine. I was surprised by the difference in tones. They almost sounded quieter but more full bodied and complex with a sparkle to them vs the bolder, dirty cymbal. Both sounded good but I prefer them polished up. I’m glad I did it
Hang on to those! Especially cleaned up, they are very sought after around here!
I have some big beats. i love them Kind of buttery, Warm & Mellow, yet still that 2002 glassy cut, I love Paiste cymbals. They are quite versatile. Great video, thx.
Thanks for watching!! Tons more coming shortly.
+ you surely feel better playing a better looking cimbal
Well… it almost goes without saying, right? 😉🤜🏻🤛🏻
I am getting the 22 big beat
Awesome choice!! Post that video after you get it!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
depends. paiste signature crashes for example, you should definitely dust them from time to time, brightness is their strong point and i could definitely hear when they hadnt been wiped down in a while they sounded a bit duller. on the other hand i have a second hand zultan caz ride and its filthy and it sounds great.
Totally with you on the Paistes. I bought a used one off a guy who was complaining about it sounding dull. He saw me play a gig with it a few months later (after I cleaned it) and offered to buy it back from me on the spot. Not sure what it is about the quirky off-brand cymbals but they usually sound better all gunked up. I’ve got an old one from the early 60’s that I won’t clean for that very reason.
@@BrianStephensOfficial yea im far from a cymbal connoisseur but paiste in my experience need a bit more love than other cymbals to keep that brightness which is what theyre good at.
It definitely looked better AND sounded better after cleaning. I picked up a couple 70s era Zildjians and cleaned them up with Barkeepers Friend. I know some people hate on cleaning cymbals, but removing all the crusty gunk was incredibly satisfying.
So satisfying!! 🤜🏻🤛🏻 Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
I did read the description to the end ❤ Awesome playing 💪🏻
Thanks so much for watching, reading, AND commenting! 🤜🏻🤛🏻
