On paper thickness! I think we have the same printer - it can take up to 300gsm paper officially. But what I‘ve noticed with such thick paper: The printer can only take one sheet at a time *and* I have to slightly push it in with the right pressure at the right moment 😂 takes a bit of trial and error, but it works for me!

    • @AbiNova
      @AbiNova 2 дня назад

@@kaos.karlos yes!! Jack said the same thing about pushing It in when it's too thick ahah! I recently bought 230gsm paper to keep it safe cause I'm worried it would damage the printer if I used such thick paper ahah. I'll see how 230gsm works first before I try anything thicker 🤣🤣

@ I get your concerns, but when I checked the official Epson page and looked up the max thickness of paper the printer can take, it said 300gsm - so even with the pushing is should be okay and not damage the printer, as they actually claim it can take that heaviness 😃

I'm an artist too and I think your sales would benefit a lot from you making eye contact with the people going by and smiling to them instead of being on your ipad (I understand the need to feel like you are using the time productively, but selling is also part of the job when you are an artist). People may be overwhelmed by the amount of things to see at a convention and go on "robot mode", but if you make eye contact, a lot of them will feel that human connection, slow down, and many will approach your booth and look at your stuff: it doesn't guarantee you a sale, but it increases the chances A LOT. **Me from the future here: I just kept watching and I see you decided to do just this later in the video, good choice 🤣

Use silhouette studio to do your cut lines (offsets) for your sticker sheets and die cuts as it will look much more even and professional. Also your cat sticker sheet with the text has a mixture of ones starting with and without capitals and it would be a lot more cohesive if they all started the same way

You are not alone! Making products at home can be a pain! I am working on stock for a Christmas market in 2 weeks. Haven't worked on my shop much lately 😅 Tried cutting with cricut yesterday, of course there was an update. Calibrating went fine, as soon as I did print and cut, scrapped a sheet of cardstock... Today it works fine, thanks Cricut 😂

I use Cricut, and there is an option to add 'bleed' to the stickers when you tell it to print. Does Silhouette have the same function? It would save you having to edit all your design files.

i have a piece of advice that will help you: to facilitate the marketing of your products, you must convince the buyer that he needs them and will use them. for example, stickers or washi taps can be stuck in a note or journal as a sample of your product.

The typical reason that sticker paper is more problematic is because it's usually glossy meaning more reflective so the laser in the cutting machine has a harder time reading accurately due to the reflection. That's why you'll see some people put matte clear tape over the registration marks. It's also more slippery for printers and cutting machines when feeding. Good luck with it all!

  • @buttercupgrove

this was so interesting to watch!!! I originally started with evergreen sticker paper as well, but I ended up swapping to PPD inkjet vinyl paper and I think you might like it, it's a little bit thicker than the evergreen paper and it feels so nice!! their website seems to be missing glossy self adhesive paper at the moment, but I've been using the matte one and it's really nice. but anyway, thank you for the lovely video, it's so nice to work along side listening and watching what you're up to 💚

I've just hit two years too. I have been using my profit to buy more equipment and I have moved into my own studio room. I thought I would be ending this year with a reasonable profit and even was worried at one point that I might have to pay TAX. haha that sounds funny now. So thank you for reminding me about the ups and down and that its not just a linear rise. I think I've been measuring my success by etsy sales but I have a weekly local market as well that has almost matched the income from ETSY but I had not realised. I guess like you my goal would be to replace my three day a week JOB with my business but mine is more of a retirement plan being much older than you. Enjoy your new home and studio. my failure of the year was starting a shopify store in July that has not had one single sale...... £25 a month for nothing....

One thing, the sticker paper may be waterproof, but this does not mean your ink is waterproof or UV resistant (unless you're using a special printer). Unless you coat the sheet, the ink is likely to run off to some degree (although some papers hold the ink better than others). I've had no problems cutting vinyl with laminate on my Silhouette, but I have a Cameo 3 rather than a Portrait, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference! As far as I know, all vinyl will have the vinyl dust from being cut (I actually have to brush my sheets prior to printing or the dust specks from the manufacturer cutting it into sheets will block the ink from laying down and I'll end up with white patches when the dust is brushed off) It's super rewarding making your own stickers especially in house because you can have such a quick turnaround from designing to having the finished product in your hands. It's great you seem to be enjoying it (despite all the printer problems)!

Hi Abi, I thought I'd leave a few tips from back when I made stickers. I had the same problems with bluriness, colour space and working with silhouette studio so I might be able to help to troubleshoot some of your issues. You may or may not have the same issues as me. But try these steps. 1) If you're exporting .png anyway, remember that png does not support CMYK. The correct file format is technically tiff. But I don't really mess with that. 2) Procreate doesn't actually have a true CMYK colour space. Instead it kind of just "extrapolates" that colour space (this can be verified on their official website) 3) If you work in the CMYK configuration in Procreate, export it as a png and import it directly into Silhouette studio, your images may appear washed out in silhouette studio. I have examples of this - however I'm not sure how to show this on youtube :) This may or may not be your problem, but I recommend testing it. 4) However, of course when you're printing things out, CMYK is a better approximation of the colours you will see in real life. Hence, my recommendation is, if you experience this problem and if you *must* work in CMYK on Procreate, then make sure to convert the colour space into RGB again in a program like Affinity or Photoshop. I'm not actually sure but I have my suspicions that Silhouette Studio might mess with your colour space and automatically convert it to CMYK or whatever anyway. 5) Tbh the simplest I've found is to just work in RGB in procreate and just export normally. The colours turn out fine for me in the end 6) Blurriness - may or may not be your printer, but please experiment with the settings in SIlhouette studio: Edit > Preferences > Import > Autotrace. With my images, if I have autotrace off sometimes, it creates fussy edges on my PNG, but this goes away when I have autotrace on. Last year though, when I had autotrace ON, it caused my images to go blurry. So Yeah silhouette studio LOVES to introduce stupid little bugs like this and you WILL have to finagle with it. 7) Lastly, try your print settings. In order to figure out what the best settings to use are, you can print a test sheet by going to Printing Preferences > Main > Click on "Manual" under Color/Intensity then press "Set..". A dialogue box will appear called "Manual Color Adjustment". Tick on "Print a pattern for color adjustment". Click on "Pattern Print Preferences" - you can then adjust parameters on CMY or Intensity/Contrast. Your printer will print a grid of image with various color adjustment settings. And you can pick the best for yourself. This helps me a lot when switching between materials. I hope this helps.

just a suggestion on printing the stickers or anything really lol, if you print from photoshop select the "photoshop manages colors" settings then choose right below perceptual or relative colorimetric 😊 this way you adjust the print settings instead of trying to adjust the color on your files ❤ also, the rgb color gamut is significantly larger than cmyk that's why colors shift quite a bit when the color mode changes and they can become muddy or muted. i hope that helps!😊 great video!!

Hey Abi! I really enjoy your videos 😊 If you can afford it in any way, I would strongly suggest you invest in a small microphone for conventions and markets. Because of the crowds, the background noise is really high and I find it really exhausting to listen to what you‘re saying (and understanding it - my brain is really overwhelmed and tired now and it‘s just 10am 😅). I’m a small business owner and vlogger myself and I haven‘t got the funds yet to invest in a good (wireless) mic, so I get it - but I try not to talk in my market snippets as a consequence (I know, my market vlogs aren‘t up yet, but I swear they‘re coming 😂). So if a good wireless mic is too expensive, maybe a small wired one would do for now and elevate the audio quality in situations like cons and markets 😊 even if it‘s not the best, I think it might make a huge difference!

It can take up to 10 years to be successful in a business and no quick fix, some people less. As you go along you will create many things to get to the point where you will find that one thing or product that will lift your business. I've learned so much during my time as a small business

Tiny table! You did well considering the size. Having something like that happening always throws me off course. I always find that if im in a smaller/side room as apposed to a big room I’ll make less sales. Like everything, these things take experience and practice to get better, improve your set up, perfect your pitch etc. My little tip for when im getting rid of stock - do buy one get one free or bundle offers so you keep the spend per person higher and get rid of more stock at once. 😊

I think you should speak with people who have been vending at conventions for years to get a better understanding of what you should be focusing on for “comic con” conventions. Also going too big too fast will be a mistake. Establish who you are as artist/business owner first and focus on gaining an audience.

Love these market day vlogs by you! ❤ Please don't give up, know how disappointing it can be. I did a free student fair recently, had no idea how it'd be. Sold some things but you wonder if it's worth all the prep and effort 😅 x
