In a way I think Len Deighton's approach to writing is very similar to William Somerset-Maugham's in that they both believe the role of the writer is to entertain their reader. Both adopt a very professional approach to their writing and also are/were disciplined in the way they approach the writer's craft. I am now reading the Harry Palmer series after having finished The Berlin Game, a series of which I will return to at a later date.

Left and Right is the problem, few politicians in power do what is right regardless of political perspective. I do believe however, that with the benefit of hindsight both Clark snd Powell were right and would have made the better leaders of their party. In their time.

The state of the British high command is truly horrific. I can't believe they were revereed for so long. Glad that history is catching up with them. Also sad that those other pits won't be touched. Probably lack of interest or money from the CWGC. 16...just in that one tiny sector alone. All you had to do was head to Munich and grab those documents from the archives and you would find the rest of the graves.

27:43-30:11, Betty Bell-Smith (Labour): "Tony [Blair] was really, really disappointed". Quite. How could the British people do this to him? And get this: they cheered when an enemy ship went down, rather than one of their own! Monsters.

Agreed. The interviews were very interesting and in some cases heartbreaking. But the film was useless in so far as it mainly depicted Midland engines. A very poor film about a very sensitive subject.

Thank you so much for this. My lovely, gentle Grandad was a GWR guard during the war. He died in 1972 and although he talked about his job in general, he never once mentioned what happened during the war. This film has given me an insight of what he went through and made his memory even more precious.

12:00 every time I see Lady Moseley I want to wretch. Why does anyone give her the time of day? The fact Waugh couch surfed at their place does make one question his taste in friends, but I’m guessing this is before Moseley flirtations with fascism! But upon reaching 17:00 it appears he greatly admired Mussolini! I like him as a writer, but I’m quite sure I would have despised him as a person.

I’m ambivalent about all this todo. Let the poor souls rest where they’ve lain since that fateful day. They know no different and surviving families never knew them. I don’t care where you live or what continent you reside upon, you’re walking over some person’s grave every day. The countless billions cover the face of the earth. And by the way, I had a great uncle that served with the A.E.F. Came home and drank himself to death by 1932.

You lot of pompous...arrogant..."upper class" twats... Disrespectful and condescending in the most egregious manner... Equal treatment of all military personnel in being sent home...the inquiry into their questionable labour deployment and access to basic human rights is all that was being requested... Oh I am gravely disappointed in the response to three perfectly reasonable enquiries by this particular "establishment"... Military discipline is of tantamount importance... An absolute necessity... Without a code of conduct there would be chaos... However... The war was over...!!! 🇿🇦

It’s times like this when I think ‘thank heaven for RUclips’! This is just wonderful in too many ways to mention individually. It’s clear that Watson has been overshadowed by Holmes for a long time, while at the same time carefully studying Holme’s methods, and with Holmes absent Watson is given an opportunity to now show HIS detecting skills, which he does brilliantly! Lovers of quality period productions like this should check out: The Shooting Party, 1985, starring James Mason and again, Edward Fox.
