I am reading, " Dear Bill". My natural curiosity has led me here to you. Now I hear your voice as I read your words. Dear Bill, sleep well!

He was 81 here, and lived on another 13 years, active to the end. Back when the Telegraph was (mostly) intelligently conservative. He'd be appalled at what it's become.

@Elitist20 Print newspapers are doomed now anyway and where there are paywall digital subscriptions they are not much help as people don't want to pay for something when they know they can get free news elsewhere. As for the Daily Telegraph - it will be gone within a decade along with most of its readership.

Superb film. Interesting to see a young Niall Ferguson working at the Telegraph too.

Oh yes I spotted that about 44 mins in! Good old Bill. Love or hate his politics, he was always a first rate chap. Unbelievably competent at what he did, covered by a gentility and likability. Brave too. I hope that’s how he’ll always be remembered.

He is not Lord William as he is not the younger son of a Duke - he is Lord Deedes, as he was ennobled.

Well done Michael - another documentary where you learn almost nothing of the person in question - rather like your documentary about Alan Clark !
