History Reading Challenge Wrap Up [CC]
After listening to a bit of the audiobook. I resubscribed to Audible just so I could return it. The author is a conspiracy theorist, and your review shows that I made the right call. Why would Gnosticism be connected to Asherah?
MMT relies on responsible governments. Lol.
Mosquitos have had an interesting effect on events going on before our very eyes in the Middle East. In 1918, when Field Marshal Edmund Allenby tried to push Ottoman forces out of what is now Israel, an obstacle in his way was not simply the Turkish army, but areas of the Levant that were rife with malaria. Some were considered uninhabitable because of it. Under the direction of British army entomologist, Major E.E. Austen, measures were taken to protect British forces from mosquitos. He had detailed maps of the areas where they were most prevalent which advancing British forces tried to avoid, but he also employed mosquito netting, sprays, and other countermeasures. Retreating Ottoman forces took no precautions and of the 100,000 prisoners taken by the British, more than 20,000 were suffering from malaria. A further 20,000 Ottoman troops died of it. Fast forward 30 years to the UN's plan for the partition of Palestine in 1947. The UN essentially divided the region by predominately Jewish and Arab populations. If one looks at a map of the partition plan and the malaria survey map from WWI, there is a near 1-to-1 correlation between the areas occupied predominately by Jews and areas where malaria had historically been endemic. Essentially, the partition plan gave Jews areas where malaria had been prevalent and the largely uninhabitable Negev Desert. So why did Jews move there? The population was low and land was cheap. From 1882 to 1914, approximately 75,000 Zionists settled in Palestine, but by the time WWI started, half had died or left. Enter professor Israel Kligler, a Zionist and public health specialist who helped defeat malaria in the region in the 1920s. He had marshes drained, standing water in irrigation eliminated, and areas of mosquito larvae sprayed. He died in 1944. Israel declared malaria to have been eradicated in 1967. In retrospect, it appears that Arabs became interested in these formally uninhabitable areas only after Israel had made them habitable. The UN's Partition Plan of 1947 would've given Arabs all the areas on Major Austen's malaria survey map that had been essentially free of malaria. These included a much-expanded Gaza, the West Bank west to Ramie and south to Beersheba, and a triangular section of what is now northern Israel bounded by Nahariyyah, Acre, and Nazareth. They turned down the UN's proposal and chose to fight instead. They lost and now have less land than they would've if they had ratified it.
Good job!
really a ghost reader it's been two years
Great and interesting summary!! thx for posting
Woow, spoiler warning at 2:08 for anyone watching... Spoilers are fine as long as they come with warnings. That would have been appropriated :|
Thank you so much for recommending this ❤❤❤❤
Aww ❤❤❤❤❤❤ thank you for reading about my family.
I loved the first one. Plot was amazing in both books. I just think she was in a hurry in the second book. Her messaging is terrific.
Very entertaining read, quite enjoyed it❤❤❤
Hey Justin, Angie Kim (the author) here. Just happened by this as I was working with my website developer to update my website in preparing for my second book coming out in September. Thank you so much! It's such a great, thoughtful review, and I really appreciate it. You got exactly what I hoped readers would get out of it. Keep up the great work!
No, not yahweh or El. Yahweh and El are and were two separate and very different gods.
Is the graphic novel gory.
I finished it today, and reading it after the Autobiography was an interesting experience. The last autobiography I read was "Speak, Memory" by Vladimir Nabokov, and he also left quite a bit out compared to what I read of Brian Boyd's first volume of his duo biography on Nabokov, and Malcolm was no different. I still do recommend the Autobiography if you haven't read it yet, because nothing can replace Malcolm's word-although I need to read about its structure and Alex Haley's involvement. My only disappointment with it is the lack of info on Malcolm's relationship with Haley since the Autobiography was a series of interviews conducted by Haley with him which was then stitched together over time. I wish it was longer, but that's just me being insatiable. Just as a disclaimer, I'm not Black, I'm a brown Mexican, but I was born here in the U.S so I've been reading up on Black history. Eventually I'll get to Mexico, but for the time being I'm more interested in books like this. I also recommend Black Against Empire if you've ever been curious about the Black Panther Party and haven't learned about them. It infuriates me how hidden these parts of American history are. I was never raised to demonize either of them since I didn't grow up in a white neighborhood, but the education system failed me until junior year, but by then I had gleaned some things from leftist friends. Edit: to expand on my point of Malcolm's word being irreplaceable, I have in particular his chapters on his awakening with the Nation of Islam and his trip to Mecca are outright magical. I've read a range of books and those chapters stand out as one of the most beautiful and enchanting sessions I've ever had. The Dead Are Arising is also wonderfully written, its style is breezy yet doesn't compromise on detail, and even bits of vocabulary and literary references might throw some for a loop or delight (my ears perked up very well to the Camus reference), but Malcolm's style, filtered through Haley from what I understand, is a wonder to behold. For BHM reads, I have African Samurai, a biography on Yasuke, and MLK's autobiography. If I read 50 pages a day, I can clear them by the month's end. Obviously I read Black history outside of this month, I just needed a change of pace after reading most of The Power Broker
damn! thanks for reading the book for me, it's super specific my search and you there giving a summary. thx (not out of laziness but lack of time)
Great review!
This work gives ya an unpolished point of view about Malcolm. It's an constant relisten n my audible library.
Black Lives Matter! Enjoyed this life update.
Lilith.
Constantly using the word CAPITALISM is ridiculous. We have been running on "Corporate Consumerism" for decades. John Maynard Keynes died in 1946. The success of the American economy during WWII was taken as proof that Keynes was correct. But without the war the Germans and Japanese were not blowing up manufactured goods and American men were coming back home looking for jobs. So planned obsolescence replaced war and Keynes probably never saw a television commercial for automobiles. So Japan and Germany recovered from the war and economists who think that they are as smart as Keynes have been ignoring the depreciation of durable consumer trash since Sputnik. They rarely mention Net Domestic Product. NDP = GDP - Dcap [Western economic calculation] NDP = GDP - (Dcap + Dcon) [reality] Dcap: Depreciation of Capital Goods Dcon: Depreciation of Durable Consumer Goods GDP: Grossly Distorted Propaganda
I am not quite sure if I was getting a clear message, on the knowledge you gained from this book. I have not read it , however I will get a hold of it now, as it seemed you had some reservations or bias on its content. In Case you don't know of this man, Here is someone I consider, more an Author and realist on this subject matter. ruclips.net/video/o8hPo6mYnks/видео.html ruclips.net/video/q1vQTMX2ELs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/AYzAqHD1gHc/видео.html
For someone who reads you say “uhh” and “uhm” A LOT…
Before you buy this myth debunking, view “The Black Southern Confederacy produced by the Straight Up RUclips channel. He also provides historical references and documentation that refutes Mr. Levine’s claims. Straight Up is not a “white” man telling our story.
I would like to see Mr Levin address the myth of the true Israelites and the Kharzaria origins among Ashkenaziim.
I suppose the history of those black Europeans who were landowners in the antebellum South is another myth fit for debunking. Kevin Levin is just another gatekeeper of the Hollywood slaves tales. Hollywood slavery is the most persistent myth. BTW, do you believe that my camp slave would have a gun bigger than me and a knife in the other hand? 😂
I would love to see the video on gamestop and amc.
Holt Collier .Amos Rucker ,John Nolan , Bass Reeves . Kevin Levine ignores these men ! He ran away when comfronted from Nelson W,Winbush ! Ghost Reader you should take a chance and lookup Nelson W,Winbush
Great review - it looks like a fascinating and important book. Thanks for picking this book and doing such a great review. (I just found your channel...)
Research John Noland was a partisan not a body servant. He was armed and took part in the raids and actions and was trusted to scout and forge alone. He has been credited with getting the closest to the courthouse in the Lamar raid and leading the break out from the Tate house as well as scouting Lawrence prior to the 63 raid.
You didn´t even get the ship´s name right. Bias review at is best.
Nice review! 👍🏿
I'm 1/3 of the way into Year's Best African Speculative Fiction anthology. I'm enjoying it so far.
If you point out to proponents of this myth the fact that these people were not considered soldiers at the time they invariably attempt to Frame your concern for the truth as an effort to denigrate black “soldiers” as if refusal to falsify and whitewash their history dishonors them.
An important point that this book makes which I don’t think people have emphasized enough is that the black confederate soldier myth is not a continuation of an idea from the 19th century. It’s a relatively recent rewriting of history to create claims that actual confederate soldiers and other people who lived through the Civil War didn’t make. Until the late 20th century, These people were not described as soldiers but rather as camp slaves. So this myth is nothing more than 20th century propaganda by falsifiers of history who evidently feel like that there is nothing redeeming about the south unless they lie about its history.
I don’t see this brown girl reads. Did she take down her channel?
I just became a new fan of your book selections. Continue lego! I got back into lego 4 years ago. Yes, some sets are expensive, but get what you can afford! That’s what I do. I know that feeling about wanting the titanic. Just continue!
This was such a great review and discussion of the banning of Maus.
The Bible is censored like the CIA censored the JFK act of 1992
Good luck on your tbr!
I agree with you in not being afraid to read books that challenge one's beliefs. Otherwise, one lives in fear and ignorance. Your review is balanced and well presented. I wish you would speak a little more clearly. In some places it's hard to make out what you're saying.
Removing "objectionable" historical content is how we end up with things like textbooks saying the slaughter of native americans was just a "relocation."
Just now seeing this video, but yay you're back! Excited to catch up on your videos. Big lego sets are so cool! Have you seen the functional mini piano one? It looks so fun to build.
Eyy, welcome back!
Banning a book like this is a sign of major weakness and total ignorance. I always say southerners are stupid and this puts another notch on my belt
i haven't been super active on booktube, but i'll be watching every now and then even if i don't comment like i used to. welcome back!
Great recommendations as usual. That book on the history of crypto currency sounds like a juicy read.
I really hope you enjoy The Way of Kings. I love Sanderson but that series scares me. I hope you enjoy all the books
I think this book is very powerful but doesn’t meet todays political trends. German government did an amazing job in the marketing so in the history books printed today there are no longer Germans but Nazis. Putting aside Mouse and the Holocaust, we should also be learning about Colonialism in more detail- that subject is practically omitted in schools curriculums and there is no lobby from Black Community to change it.
Last fall I read The Deficit Myth based on your review. It was a very interesting book. So I’m interested to hear what you think of the Crypto and GameStop books as they kind of fall into the same subject area.
