Lakota American sounds fascinating - you are so right that we always hear about indigenous people in America from the time of colonisation, not what it was like beforehand. I had never thought about that & I am very keen to know more. As always, thanks so much for drawing these books to my attention!
I am very interested in Lakota America, I don't know enough and quite frankly most everyone else don't either. Looking forward to your review of The Dead are Arising, I would really like to learn more about Malcolm X
congrats on getting so many books done in 2 weeks. I like the xmas idea - I might have to put down a deposit myself haha. I think we could all use a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel at this point
Ah, what an interesting crop you ended up with! Not sure I understand 'contemporary history' as a category but I do dig sociology and contemporary issues--often labeled Current Events in the shops.
Contemporary history...yes a very nebulous idea lol. The way I was thinking about it was very recent history like for example last year. Still history but contemporary to us.
I was hoping I would get to more than one book for the History Challenge but I only ended up getting to one. I read Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. I really enjoyed it. I love that it started from the species pre-history level and stayed there for a long time before moving forward to other stages of human history.
Sounds like you had a really good readathon! Based on your description of The Daughters of George III, I wonder if you might like She-Wolves by Helen Castor, if you haven't read it? It's about the women who ruled England as regents in pre-Elizabeth I days. It's now many years since I read it, but I really enjoyed it and it has some similar topics but from a much earlier time period.
The readathon was fun, this was also the first time I participated in a live and actually contributed to the conversation. I technically only read two children’s books about Amelia Earhart and ESP but I started a Hellen Keller biography and a book about how farmers, not hunter gatherers, were actually the nomadic people. Both books I didn’t finish were very word heavy but I will be finishing the hunter gatherer book because it really is interesting.
K i need this shirt as well. So glad your Readathon went well! Lakota America sounds like a must read! I added it to my TBR

I LOVE Lakota America! Pekka Hamalainen has another amazing book called Comanche Empire, which changed the way I thought about American history.

That ledger art on the Lakota book is so beautiful.

@@ghostreader9766 if you don't mind, would the book have mentioned who the artist was? I know a little about Indigenous art and am wondering.
