Thank you. The Homo Ludens channel made me lose interest. You rekindled the interest and now I will restart studying the rules. Pray I find 4 players who will devote 2 days though:)
Looks amazing! Will you play this anytime soon?
I just discovered you, and I enjoyed this video very much. Any progress on the follow-on videos you mention at the end of this one?
I wrote a plan for a second video at the same time, but this didn't get many views so I didn't record it. If I can find it I'll get it done.
I tried twice to love this game, bought it twice and sold it back twice! Not for us at all! We play expert games like TI4, Eclipse, SWRebellion, BTSun, Unsettled, TFMars etc but not this one! Too bad we love the universe of Tolkien. But Thank God we discovered and love WOTR THE CARD GAME!
Thanks for the content, I see this games is 2+ players on bbg, how do you play solo?
With most of the heavy wargames I play, I just play both sides. When I first started doing it, it was hard to swap, but after some time, it becomes fairly easy to separate the goals/objectives of each side and focus on what they need to do. With a game like GTS, the chit-pull system works really well as you can't plan perfectly and have to keep adjusting with the moves.
I'm playing this right now and am seeing the opposite. With the Germans having unlimited road trace they can be almost anywhere on the map and be in supply. We are on turn 13 and Rostov just fell but my opponent is across and pushing due south. He will take Voronezh likely on turn 14. I lost so many troops being out maneuvered. Some 50 divisions are gone. I should have put a lot more in voluntary full retreat to save units early but I didn't start doing that until like turn 8. With no Soviet Air, unlimited road trace for the Germans I just don't see how this models close to any supply constraints on the Fall Blau offensive that was tethering German advances. The Germans will auto win in the next turn, but we will likely keep on. Also there is like only 2 units in the German dead pile which seems abnormally low considering the attrition rates army group A/B were suffering during their drives east. I am not convinced without more play, maybe 2-3 more games if this the game I was hoping it would be.
Good review ... thanks. Your say you prefer KDM and you criticize the "game over" situation in ATO. Doesn't the same situation exist in KDM? I have had lots of "game over" situations in KDM. Or is the difference that a KDM campaign takes less time?
The biggest issue for me is the lack of replayability of ATO, mainly because of the depth of reading required. I think KDM is highly replayable because you're mainly replaying battles and choosing different tactics and weapon loadouts. ATO has an element of that, but at least 50% of gameplay is focused around choose-your-own adventure scripted adventures, and I don't like the idea of repeating those. Others have, and have no issue with it, but it's not for me.
I've tried to like this game. Can't. Back in the day. The Russian Campaign still not impressed by it. OK whinging pom has had say. X
Dont you have to pull a card for every TDC, or is one enough if you shoot at one target?
I was very rusty and likely made some mistakes here sorry.
📯 I agree! I’m obsessed with rules too. Unfortunately, with this game its rules are all over the place!! So many “if, thens but that insteads”, etc. overwhelming. I’m only on day 7 and half my Titans are dead already and I don’t have the make Titan tech yet. And I have not played enough to know all the nuances of all rules so there’s a lot of game interruptions, so instead of researching my tech I end up researching rules for hours a session. 📯So I’ve decided to make **Cycle 1 ** a learning campaign. Meaning I’ll make mistakes but won’t do any back tracking like I normally would when mistakes are made. If I lose because I didn’t understand the mechanisms, or missed some opportunities, I make notes in my Cycle 1 learning journal, replenish my Titans and keep playing. I’ve decided to do this because I really lovvvvee this story and theme and I want to explore the world and all of the inward odyssey. In *Cycle 2* I’ll start the “official” campaign, by then I should have a solid grasp of the rules and have a strategy to complete the game.
Yeah, I ended up just 'fudging' a lot of the rules to focus on the experience/enjoyment...
one more thing regarding the Technological advancements - check the bgg section of the files, and if you have Office Excel app (and Windows) you may use interactive tech trees I have created. Currently there are tech trees for cycles 1-3, with all the armory included there as the excel tracks what tech you unlocked and shows you what gear you may now create as well as it may help with resources tracking. I wrote those tech trees to have less time looking and comparing cards (macOS app is WIP now, I think I should have usable version done like in a week or two)
Yeah I've used those to explore what lies ahead, the only downside is it's on my PC, and I have to get up, my knees ache, I have to unlock my PC, find the file...etc :-D It's a great resource though!
You have pushed Omniman? but he is immovable... Third icon on the bottom of his card. There is Unavoidable Knocback, Blindspot and Immovable (or maybe called by another word, but it prevents him to be pushed). I did the same mistake while battling him...
Super spoilery! - if you have not played cycle 2 - do not watch :D
Any chance I can chat with you about this game (or a version of it)? I'm trying to help my 82yo father with his game long distance. :)
Oh sorry, it's been so long since I've played it I wouldn't be much help. You may be able to find some regular players elsewhere online.
Any idea when this is coming out?
It should retail early 2025.
I also want to let you know that Gary Grigsby war in the pacific is on sale on matrix games for 16$ which may be a more rewarding time investment than this game
Are you liking it more than cycle one also what happens if you draw the traitor card in single play just out of curiosity
Not really, if anything I'm liking it less because I'm experiencing even more crew loss and hull damage due to random events. The battles also seem more chaotic and random. For example, the 'ambrosia tokens' can instantly kill my titans. I'm investing in tech to reduce that, but it's just another random element to deal with. And this 'traitor' idea, despite it not affecting me, just seems silly.
@@WiseGuyHistory this game really sounds like it has an identity crisis and can’t decide weather it wants to be a table top rpg, a dungeon crawler, or xcom like
I did a bit more digging and it seems my deduction of influences was pretty spot on “It’s a unique experience, merging ideas inspired by video games like XCOM, Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and the jrpg genre with modern tabletop board games, like KDM or 7th Continent.” Into the unknown
Monster Hunter seems to influence/inform the equipment and character progression due to having a lot of gear that feels really similar to use just looking different
Dark souls seems to inform cyoa elements in that decisions made in the first few hours of gameplay can have massive impacts on the way the story plays out.
How does it compare to KDM? Kingdom death monster. Feels similar in the boss battle area that is
I actually prefer KDM. This has more of a 'text-driven narrative', whereas KDM is more 'battle-driven'. In effect, in KF, you'll be doing a lot more reading, and less fighting, compared to KDM. In terms of the actual battles, KF is almost identical to ATO, which means tactical use of weapons and tokens [opening and break] are going to be important.
Quite a haul! Enjoy!
My friends and I were disappointed with the Race to Moscow game, not that interesting really, not a wargame. Freedom was more interesting, felt more like a wargame, but I got rid of it too. Rocketmen is ok, and I am a fan of Martin Wallace. Left my collection after a couple of plays. So you got a bunch of mediocre games, sorry dude! Well, other than the Tigris & Euphrates retheme
Yeah I get that vibe from a lot of these, but I figured I'd give them a go, and trade on if needed.
A box of goodies for sure! Huang is pretty much a re-release of Yellow & Yangzee, which is from what I understand an evolution of T&E. But Huang and Y&Y is pretty much the same game.
Great video Did you go all in😊 ! May someone write to me what will be in the wave 1 😅 ?
I think I only backed the Core box for this.
How tough is it to read and understand the rules?
Most of the rules are fairly easy, there are just a few edge cases and rare situations that seem to be hard to remember.
Hmmm, this is not the kind of video I should watch... Way too much temptation.
Merry Xmas!
Merry Xmas!
Looks like you used the old mod compared to other video I watched...are you going all in?
This is apparently the newer mod, it seems to have some updated graphics/icons.
@@WiseGuyHistory oh ok! good to know...are you planning to get this game?
@@WiseGuyHistory just to let you know, I downloaded the TTS preview one which was updated on Dec 17th, 2024 and it has the new character boards and things like that...I think the video I watched was using this one.
Oh yep, my bad, this is the older version!
And yep, I've backed it, but I think I only backed for the core box.
Well, I got a shipment from Phalanx to day too. Purple Haze with an expansion. Happy Holidays!
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
It's Christmas Eve on your side of the world, but we've still got a few more hours. Cheers from Tennessee
👍❤️
For technology cards - x wing binder pages for cards are great for having both tech card and gear on the same page. A binder is a must have I think or at least those pages for cards. Unfortunately big x wing pages are nowhere to be found now and only small ones are available (at least in EU)
Yeah I really need something! At the moment they're just stacked as a deck and hard to see.
I backed it for a few days then deleted my backing. I have so many campaign games piling up, I finally realised I cannot justify buying a new one until the others are all played out. FOMO needs to end!
Thanks for the overview. I just got ATO and slightly worried how to cope with so many components!
Oooh cool, enjoy! I recommend sorting everything out by Cycles first to make it all easier to manage!
@@WiseGuyHistory thanks! How are you finding the game so far?
I have mixed thoughts; it's amazing, but, I have a few niggling concerns.
Bulge time again, 22 december 2024! Are you going to play a Bulge game this year?
I want to, but struggling with table space at the moment. I need to get ATO finished and off the table to make some room!
Hi Nathan! Great job! There's any chance to help me with the game Three days of Gettysburg? I'm struggling with the rules but without succes. Any tips or advice? I imagine you don't have in mind to make a video tutorial about such an old game. Thanks.
Oh mate, I haven't played that in about 10 years! Can I suggest you reach out to STIGLR, he's the RUclips expert on GBACW and even has his own title! See his channel here: www.youtube.com/@Stiglr
Ah - stupidly didn't realise this was a Vassal version (I should look more closely - sorry) - no atmosphere at all or 'feeling for the game' for me personally..... Apologies, this isn't a criticism.
No worries, I completely understand and empathise.
I have the 1st edition of the game and expansion Battles of the third age. What do you think,is it worth it to go to the second edition with all expansions or to stick with 1st ediition+expansion? And second question is would some of these 2nd edition expansions can be integrated with 1st edition of the game? Thank you
Oooh that's a tough question. I used to have 1st Edition, then I upgraded, but I really can't recall if there was any difference between the versions...Maybe there are differences in card art and style, which would mean you'd be able to use the expansions if you upgrade.
Defectors! Don't underestimate them! It may be crucial to have them to avoid failure in the campaign...
I have 52 plays under my belt mostly solo with some coop sprinkled. I must say its a great game but really rules heavy. The sequence is quite easy but the sheer amount of keywords and how they interract is a lot of work. Map movement, keywords, asymmetric factions breeds a ton of ambiguity. Mage knight was easier for me to settle in. I wish I could find someone to try out pvp with but you have to master your and the opponents faction to have any effect on your game. It is in my top 5 games of all time
Great to see that there's enough replayability for 52 solo plays, I'm both relieved and impressed by that, as, likewise, I'm not sure if I can get someone for regular PvP plays! Really appreciate your views and experiences on this one!
@WiseGuyHistory of course! I finished through the campaign doing at least one objective per scenario. Now I started trying to complete all 3 before moving on to another scenario. This majorly affects each puzzle in each scenario. FYI, I only have the base game. I have played over 120 games of too many bones but I have a TON of expansions. Cloudspire really is the best bang for your buck even though tmb is my absolute favourite.
I'll add my list: The Wars of Marcus Aurelius by Hollandspiele, Squad Leader, Atlantic Chase, Black Orchestra, Storm of Steel, Fate of All, Panzer Leader, DNO or Unentschieden by GDW. Probably a few more I could add but I've not looked near long enough and this isn't my end all be all top 10. Would take me a lot of time to scour the internets looking.
Yes... LBA Espagnol is also good,.
Bitter Woods!
Very interested and great choices! Thanks for the video. My TOP10: 1. PanzerBlitz 2. Ardennes '44 3. We the People 4. Terrible Swift Sword (by Larry Elmore) 5. Bitter Woords 6. Rise and Decline of the Third Reich 7. Operation Mercury: The German Airborne Assault on Crete 8. La Bataille de Dresde (I know ii should be excluded...) 9. Red Storm 10.Fire in the Lake
Thanks for the video. I always enjoy these types of conversations. For fun, I offer the following (chosen from my collection): 1776 (AH) Old school. Luftwaffe (AH) My first wargame; purchased, at least in part, because of the box art. Submarine (AH) Your choice of U-Boot reminded me of this classic. A Las Barricadas (Compass) So simple. Paths to Hell (Compass) I know this cover is derived from a photograph, but I believe it is stylized enough to make it “original.” It is a perfect match between artwork and game title. Looking at the horizon, and with historical hindsight, we know these men are literally (in some sense) marching to hell. Labyrinth (GMT) A life or death game of chess. Panzer (GMT) So iconic. Finally, I would be remiss if didn’t list a few works from the late George Parrish who did stellar work for Avalon Hill back in the day. All are great: Raid on St Nazaire Paratrooper Tac Air Thunder at Cassino Turning Point: Stalingrad Thanks again for the video. I hope I’ve been able to add to the conversation. Cheers.
warriors of middle earth is the better exansion but the lords and kings is easier to ad and to learn
Great video, Thank you for sharing! You inspired me to do my own @cardboardcommander. Thank you for the inspiration.
I really like Thin Red Line box covers - they evoke a perception of the conflict and scale they are covering. Under An Iron Sky is my phone screensaver 🙂
