The Yaesu FT-710 packs a lot of features into a little small package at a very reasonable cost. Are all of the features useful, or even needed? In general, I would say yes. Ham Radio Tech Test - What to expect
Brilliant thanks cool stuff
No worries
Very Nice Video ! Many tks From Austria !73 de OE5POP
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks I am looking at both.
I’m now using my 891 as a mobile rig, using the ATAS-120A mobile antenna. Since the rig “tunes” the antenna, I no longer use that tuner, but it also works just as well as an external tuner for most of my other Yaesu radios, so I’ve been using it with my FT-710.
Went along and ordered a FT-891, your videos are among the best on this rig. Once again thank you.
Thanks…
You show how to set the RX levels but said nothing about the TX levels. I noticed that your ALC in TX was about mid range. A lot of people get heart burn if there is any ALC level at all. What do you recommend and why?
I’ve got a video planned for this, but in a nutshell - the displayed ALC represents a bias voltage the radio develops to protect itself from over powering its output. It doesn’t kick in until just after the output power comes up to around 10% of the rated output (or whatever you’ve set as your output. At full ALC, your driving signal is being clamped down to keep your rig below the rated output. So, low ALC means you’re not getting the output current you want, and at max ALC, your signal is being distorted. I find that between 1/3 and 1/2 on the ALC scale is the sweet spot where you’re getting the power you want with a clean, clear signal. There’s more to it, but that’s my general premise…. 73 degrees ND3N
Great video, looking forward to seeing some more on the FT-89. Thank you
More to come!
Nicely done!
Thanks!
How do you fit all three of the displays on the screen? I'm using a 14 laptop.
In that video, I was using a 24 inch all-in-one. Since then I’ve added a 24 inch monitor to that particular setup. So, I can spread out even further…
Hi Tom. Really good video. I am trying out FT8 but don't own a computer. Not everyone can afford a computer. It would be great to see another Ham just using an old phone and a cheap radio etc. Video etc. Ps I don't own a Tablet etc. Cheers from George in the UK.
There are micro computers on the market with WSJTx preinstalled. It also has the HF clock installed, that should be enough for a YT search …. They run in the$50-$60 range, and you can usually find a cheap used monitor around. FWIW the enjoyment you’ll get is well worth it…
I took a class in public speaking about 40 years ago and chose the topic of ham radio. I had the class attention when I started by asking "What do I have in common with these people? Barry Goldwater, King Hussen, Arthur Godfrey, Tex Beneke..." I continued by demonstrating with my 2 meter HT calling up hams on repeaters well out of range of line of sight VHF. It is now 52 years I got my ticket. VE7ATU
I did something similar, though I demonstrated using packet radio…
So...I have been using cluster information on log4om2 seemingly automatic. What I don't understand is that I once upon a time had the ability to spot someone and now I don't. I have come to realize that you must register with a 'server' or ham that will enable this, but the instructions I received from the ham was not clear in how log4om2 gets changed. I didn't change anything or enter the hams telnet address. I am not even sure where to enter that information. I probably need a basic understanding of how the cluster system works on log4om2 in order to make heads or tails of it so I can have enough knowledge to proceed. Any suggestions??
Log4om doesn’t do anything in this case, but if you register with a given cluster, usually your name, call, and location, then when you connect that cluster with log4om, it will recognize you and you’ll be able to post. I recommend ve7cc as they have a downloadable app where can set things up the way you want.
I’ve tried 20 mice on my dx10 but my ft710 works no issue
I’ve found that if the mouse needs a driver, like most of the newer ones, then they have a problem. Older, simple mice have no problems….
@@ND3N well that’s why then I’ll have to try to find a older one I liked that with my 710 works perfectly
Great video well done!!!
Thank you!
This is KC9TZO, working contest with SM ROCKETS TEAM, see in the log, good luck.
Tom … while interesting this isn’t helpful in that each of these applications has its own set of settings that must match what’s been chosen here. FLDigi, JC8CALL and WSJT-X need to be configured in such a manner that these settings above actually function. On top of that some of these vary by the band. I don’t see for example the setup for FLDigi that matches these radio settings for sending via FLMsg over say 10M, 6M and/or 2M FM. Did you do a video on that as well?
That’s something I’ll have to take a look at. Hopefully I provided enough to at least give folks a starting point.
Hi Tom, liking your videos a lot, I have a DX10 and would love to connect my Nino TNC to it and upset forPacket radio, i cant find anywhere the use of the DX10 or the 991 A for packet , any chance of setting up for Packet, 73 Brendan de GM0CQV
I don’t do packet, but I might …. Will look into it more
Poor planning in my opinion..International Beacon Project..This has been around since 1979. Frequencies are: 14100, 21150 and 28200. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. My own 10m beacon is on 28199.5 Also, that tramples on phone frequencies used in Canada. Phone operation is permitted below 7125 on 40. The Trans-Canada net has been on 14140 for decades. These are USA frequencies you are referring to, not North American.. VE3IIM/VE6PG,
Thanks for the insight, Tim. I pulled those freqs straight from the rules, so you need to take your concerns up with the organizers. FWIW I agree with you, which is why I talked about not causing QRM to non-contesters. 73 de ND3n

Excellent video, Tom. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. I’ve moved on to using the N3FJP Amateur Contact Log, which I find more intuitive than HRD. But Their logbook is still really good and does the job.
there are a lot of rude operators on FT8. Take place on my slot and don´t work split. Replay the CQ call on my slot and don´t go away after the qso is done. Sometimes the best thing is go qsy and make a SSB QSO. 73 Joe DH1KJ
Clear, to the point... how refreshing, thanks Tom de ve7kkq
My pleasure! That’s always what I aim for….
Have you got these settings for the 781 mic
Not yet.
my IC718 is not listed is there one I can use
Yes, but not sure of the specific settings for the 718, though. I’ll do some research and see if I can find some guidance to help you out.
@@ND3N thank you I am using the IC718 and signalinkUSB which works good on other programs but its not on this one
Wish I had found this sooner!!!
Well, you’ll know where it is next year, though I will probably put out an update before then.
OK, so I know some more, so I’ll make a list and send it to you soon! But I won’t check it twice, not even once… that will be your job! Fun stuff, and I enjoyed it a lot! Thanks…
Thanks for the assist. Credit will be given…
Thanks for video and your time.new subscriber from uk 🇬🇧
Thanks
PRC on or off (tx audio processor) is channel setting specific with memories, yet RT systems has no column for PRC in the memory channel editor screen (not in radio settings either). I reported this to them and I hope they add it soon.
I don’t think I’ve seen that in any RT Sys. S/W…. Perhaps because it’s something that is dynamically set to conform for each individual voice. But it would be nice to be able to have a way to easily reload them in case of a required reset…
Tom thankyou for the teaching. New Newbee like myself, this is Priceless🎉❤ 73s 9V1KM KK7QGL SINGAPORE

Glad it helped!
Thanks again for a great video.
Thanks for watching!
I been an FT-891 user for 4 years, been using it strictly at home for 95% CW and some SSB. Though I use it as a basic rig, it has lots of features, maybe too many for me. I like it for CW use since it has filtering I can choose. Love the small footprint, and the readout though small, has a nice, readable frequency readout, no problem there. I think many get put off by its size, but I see that as a plus since it won't take up lots of space. Hooked up to a small ATU and I'm all set. Good receive and I get complements on the TX audio. I have been collecting and trading HF rigs for decades, this one is my go-to rig within the last few years. I can't speak for those that use digital modes and such, I simply operate CW and some SSB and it is a wonderful all-around rig, no complaints, great for what it is and the price is a plus.
Mine has been put to mobile use in my car, along with the ATAS-120A antenna, but I’m thinking about getting another one to add to the stable in my shack. Great little rig…
Wow this was a lifesaver for me! I’m new and had the FT-710 and WSTJ-X on my MacBook… but unfortunately was limited by the unavailability of Mac ham software. Muddling through the driver issues reminded me why I left PCs for Mac years ago. I still hate Windows, but your video made a huge difference in getting things to work for me. Thanks for the amazing instructions!
You’re very welcome
Very useful info. TNX
Thanks
Well the WSJT-X, GridTracker, and N3FJP ACL didn't work here. ACL tells me normally only one connection is allowed.
there’s a fix for that. The work-around isn’t too difficult, but too long to do in a comment, so I’m heading to my shack and will put out another short video with what you need to do. Expect it in a couple of hours.
@@ND3N I went back to ny original configuration. I use Win4Icom and it has 6 "virtual radios" that feed off of one serial port from the IC-7300. I have N3FJP in the first spot and WSJT-X in the third spot, all is well except GridTracker, even though the settings are correct in WSJT-X and grid tracker, GridTracker just shows waiting for message. Not sure what is going on but I will keep trying.
Tom, I’ve worked through the settings and cannot get CAT to function. The audio settings work fine. I’ve tried it with two different PCs with the same result. Any suggestions? KR4VT
let me watch that video again with my dx10 and see if I forgot to include anything. I’ll get back to you in a day or so.
Tom, I fooled around with the settings and go it working by changing the WSJT handshake to Hardware. All other settings are the same as you provided. Works now on both PCs. I’m not tech savvy enough to know what that means. TNX, KR4VT
I heard this on the radio today but didn't know the details. Thanks for explaining it!
No problem!
Thanks…😊
Welcome 😊

you speak the truth my friend
How is the audio? I am selling an FT-891 because I just haven't been able to get the audio right, it's too tinny.
I’m actually getting ready to release a video on setting the DSP equalizers. Should be posted early next week
Tom, thank you for the three "bite sized" videos that are excellent for giving a consice summary for their software. Otherwise, we have to wade through interminable gassing by the well-meaning creators. Excellent job.
Glad it was helpful!

I should’ve known not to trust Google.p
Tom, I really appreciate your videos on the 991A. You do the best job of all the RUclipsrs. Thanks.
Glad you like them!
Tom, I followed your TS890 to FT8 video, and got that working fine. I am trying to get HRD working now, and used the built in port connecting in HRD, and it almost does it. Everything works, except the rig goes into transmit when they connect. I made sure I did not have vox on, and even unplugged the mic, but still stays in trans. If I turn the rig off/on, it seems to be ok. During your TS890 video, while covering the ports, you mentioned that under the Advanced setting, on ports 17-20, that 19-20 would be used in HRD, but not details. Could this be my problem?
I’ve had the same problem. I’m thinking it has to do with a firmware update, but have no insight into that. But as you found out, cycling the rig power puts you back to normal. 73
