  • In this video I’ll be taking you through the settings on your Yaesu FT-dx10, to optimize your SSB operations. If you use a microphone, you'll want to watch this!
Everyone has a different voice, uses different microphones, and are in different operating conditions and environments. There is no single set of settings that will universally be optimum for everyone. The settings I’ll be showing you are, after a lot of research and experimentation, what I’ve found work best for me.
    1. Menu Settings
    a. RADIO SETTING:
    i. AGC FAST/MID/SLOW - Leave in default
    ii. TX BPF SEL: DX/Contest = 300-2700 / Ragchew=200-2800
iii. HCUT/LCUT - Match TX BPF Selection
    b. OPERATION SETTING:
See N3HNH’s excellent explanation of equalizers: • Yaesu FTdx10: TX Audio...
    i. AMC Release Time: MID
    ii. PRMTRC
    EQ1: FREQ: 300 / Level: -10 / BWTH: 5
    EQ2: FREQ: 1200 / Level: -5 / BWTH: 5
    EQ3: FREQ: 2300 / Level: +7 / BWTH: 5
    iii. P PRMTRC
    EQ1: FREQ: 300 / Level: 5 / BWTH: 2
    EQ2: FREQ: 1300 / Level: 2 / BWTH: 2
    EQ3: FREQ: 2400 / Level: 10 / BWTH: 1
    c. Function Selections
    i. Moni - Off with speaker / ON (35-ish) with phones
ii. MIC GAIN - Use ALC to adjust
iii. MIC EQ - Turns on the Parametric Equalizers
iv. PROC LEVEL - OFF uses Normal Parametric Equalizer/ON (Start level 50 and use ALC to determine best setting)
    v. AMC Level - Used with the Processor on, the Automatic Microphone Gain limits the MIC Audie to prevent distortion even if too much audio is set too hot.
    2. Record/Playback
    a. We’re going to start by recording an on-air QSO, so I’m connected back to my antenna, so we can find someone talking.
    b. Open your functions menu
    c. Find an active frequency
    d. Press record. The length of the recording will be limited by the space on your SD card.
    e. Play back the recording.
    f. Delete that recording
    g. Record several short clips
    h. Play back each one.
    i. Delete them all
    3. Recording a message using display
    a. Back on the dummy load
    b. In the function menu, select MESSAGE
    c. Press the MEM button and within 5 seconds, select a memory location
    d. Limit for each message is 90 seconds
    e. Test play the message (BK-IN OFF)
    f. Turn BK-IN ON and play message
    4. Recording a message using the FH-2 Remote Control Keyboard
    a. Turn BK-IN OFF
    b. Record message from active (not function screen) into location 2
    c. Test play back message
    d. BK-IN ON - Play over the “Air”

Tom excellent video as usual, but how do you set the ALC level and AMC Gain level and Compression level to acceptable input without to much distortion being produced for SSB Mic setting, for newbie guys for setting the radio up for phone. keep up the great videos, your my go to for videos. thanks 👌

Tom, would love to schedule a contact with you on 75 Meters between now and Field Day! I also have the FTDX10, majority of my contacts are on FT-8 and have not had many contacts on SSB. I always have wondered if I could make more contacts if I am getting 100% out of the rig. I am not far from you here in the Buckeye State!! 73 and TNX

No problem. Look me up on QRZ and send me an email and we can make that schedule. I’d like to check all my rigs and be sure the all have good audio, not that I do a lot of SSB, but still nice to know…

    Hi Tom,
Thank you for the tutorials. I'm a new HAM and am trying to get on the air with my FTDX10.
If you have the chance, I'd love to see a video of you setting up an antenna, checking SWR, Auto-Tuning with the FTDX10, and getting on the air.
My first attempt didn't go so well but that's ok. This is a journey.

I’ll see about putting something together that addresses your concerns. I went through the same difficulties when I was a newbie, but now it’s become second nature. You’ll get there as you gain experience.

Do the recorded memory banks (message) run through the same audio settings as if you were using the mic "live"?

I would assume so. The first thing that happens with the mic is that it hits a A/D converter so until it becomes a digital signal and is processed as such.
