    Ryan, I'm trying to make sense of the difference in lacing between rim braked and disc braked wheels. I don't see the point. In the end, there will be an equal number of spokes going in either directions on each flanges of the hub. Is there something I am missing? Why is it necessary to have all inbound spokes going in the same direction? Is it that having one side inbound and the other side outbound going the same direction will induce some "torque-steer"?

    Beautiful pair of wheels Ryan! I happen to have build similar spec wheels in the past (same hubs, same spokes) The inconsistency of thickness, the holding part, and slight twist on some really makes a test for experience specially tensioning. Btw, adding closed bed rims takes your fingers for a good workout 😂

    I do all my own wheel builds too. I don't buy carbon. I mostly try to get all my parts for my bikes from US companies which as far as I'm concerned make the best quality components. I'm not a weight conscience kind of guy but instead performance for dollar which is where the true value of a bike is. Carbon and light weight junk cost a lot of money but it new lasts long, that's what I have learned over decades of owning bikes. I'm done throwing money away especially on stuff the industry lies about on massive scale these days.

    I just saw I had the same tool. The nipples were so short at the hub and because you have to thread in the spoke, I had to grind the tool down to be able to tighten down nipple to spoke that was with DT swiss 240 hub I own a mobile bicycle repair business, I do not build wheels yet I can straighten wheels but it took me six hours to get the old wheel apart and put in the new spokes because they sent me a new spokes. The spokes do have a failure rate. Thank you.

    • @RyanBuildsWheels
      @RyanBuildsWheels 6 дней назад

      Aye; assembly was a pain! I've now built with the larger Aero spokes and those were much quicker; not sure I'll go with the thinner spokes if building in carbon again.

    Its a shame that other than extralight, the likes of DT, Easton, HED, etc. don’t sell carbon rims for custom wheel builders. So where do we look? And don’t say light bicycle - I don’t trust their rims

    • @RyanBuildsWheels
      @RyanBuildsWheels 6 дней назад

      Aside from Extralite - to my knowledge - all of those brands above don't have their 'own' carbon rims per se; they'll all be sourcing from a variety of factories that makes loads of rims for third parties regardless so a 'DT' rim isn't really a DT rim at all for example (but I'm happy to be proven wrong on this point if it needs to be refuted). Don't fall for brand names is my top advice here. Which leaves your question where to look: two high end brands that I'm happy to reccomend are South Industries and @reservewheels3482; I've had great times building both of their products. Venn Cycling are my *go to* option for quality OEM carbon rim options and my own in house range of carbon builds launching this year utilise them exclusively. Paul over at @Mapdec digs em too I believe :-). I'm going to have to stick up for LB though: I've built many of their rims over the years and the only failure I've ever seen was a pressure blow out on one of their lightest models caused by rider error (where pressure from the tubeless system enters the rim). Have you any direct experience with their product?

    • @thedownunderverse
      @thedownunderverse 6 дней назад

      @@RyanBuildsWheels thank you for the long response! I’ve not had any experience with Light Bicycle, and I take your point on brand names not necessarily manufacturing in-house (most often it’s not!)? I guess my qualm is whether there’s any decent engineering or QC that goes on and that’s what I’d expect to be getting from a brand name. I know that’s not necessarily the case, of course but it’s psychological I suppose. I also don’t like the imperfections of carbon rims - voids, bubbling, lack of compaction…. which isn’t seen. At least with aluminium rims what you see is what you get. I love me a good DT or HED rim. For the average punter that’s all we really need!

    really good video, Ive built quite a few wheelsets but really like the lacing order you use for the disc brake rear, very little spoke gymnastics required, also the valve hole confirmation is a nice trick allowing fine tuning of the key spoke before committing. Great stuff looking forward to future vids

    Hi man I would like to ask you if you have ever build any Cadex wheels brand. I would like to know how to build it them. Thanks!

    • @RyanBuildsWheels
      @RyanBuildsWheels 3 месяца назад

      I've certainly re-built them with fresh spokes but, seeing as I'm a custom wheelbuilder, that's not something that I''d build from scratch seeing as they're a branded factory wheelset. Is it a calculating straighpull spokes that is given you issues with them? I will do a video on this in the future :-)

    I have a bent carbon rim (Reynolds 29er XC). It’s undamaged. No crash. No off road use. Can anything be done to true a carbon rim? It’s the rim itself and not a spoke issue. Thanks 😊

    • @RyanBuildsWheels
      @RyanBuildsWheels 3 месяца назад

      As in you can't remove the 'bend' by truing the wheel using spoke tension? Sounds like it's kaput tbh Lance! Without seeing the whel in perosn it's hard ot know what you mean I'm afraid.

    My front wheel should have a left spoke length of 284.5mm, I ordered 284 should I have gotten 285?. Spokes on the right should be 285.5, do I get 284 or 286? My rears left should be 284.5 I ordered 284mm Should I have gone 285? And the right should be 282.9 do I get 282 or 283? Thanks

      If you're using the method / calculator I suggest in this video (SpokeLenghtProject) then ALWAYS round up yes :-)>. This is to guard against the risk of having too little thread above the 'shoulder' of your nipples and to protect against them snapping where they're weakest (especially if alloy, being more brittle than brass) but note that this is dependent on how you've measure ERD and - if using ERD Sticks (see my video on the subject: two links below) - how you've got the 'depth' of the stick setup. General rule of thumb to play it safe though: AWALYS ROUND UP. Anyone offering custom cut spokes (www.SpokesFromRyan.com!!!) can offer spokes in any mm length so going odd numbers isn't a problem. If you can only access even sized spokes then rounding up is still usually preferable. • @RyanBuildsWheels
      @RyanBuildsWheels 3 месяца назад

      That means an awful lot thanks @AidanWGGuitar! And apologies it took me so long to see and reply to this comment! I've been away for a while because last year I discovered that I have ADHD; this has taken a bit of a toll but I also want to make a video about THAT now...there are SO MANY intersections that come into the realm of cycling and it's often lacking diversity and I want to tackle each in the future For example: class, sexuality, neuro-diversity and being politically radical are the one's I can speak about from personal experience. Other intersections such as race and gender I'm not qualified to speak on via lived experience and so these would be great topics to find people who would like to talk about them in a candid and right on way.

    Hi ryan, I am just looking at the sapim race spokes you sell - can I just confirm if these do come threaded? I notice the image shows a threaded section but I am a little unsure. Also I am having a little trouble determining the nipple length I need - is there an optimal length?

    • @RyanBuildsWheels
      @RyanBuildsWheels 4 месяца назад

      They do indeed come threaded 👍🏻😀! Nipple length (which, remember, does not affect spoke length), can be dependent on your rim and how thick it’s spoke bed is and / or if you’re using washers. Most alloy rims without eyelets will be fine with 12mm, if you’re using washers or eyeleted rims 14mm may be required to clear the rim when truing and not scratch it with your spoke key. Some carbon rims have a very thick spike bed. Nipples which are ‘too long’ will rarely be a problem. A 14mm nipple should suit almost every use case.
