    ive recently read the hurricane season by fernanda melchor and it was a very heavy read but i ended up loving it. almost the entire book is written in run-on sentences so you cannot look away from the page, you feel like someone is pouring out their soul before you, just telling you how it is with no decorations. you get to know the perspectives of several characters which explore how poverty affects everyone in a tight-knit community. and on top of all that it is brutally honest about the misogyny impoverished women face. also a few days ago i found our lady of the nile by scholastique mukasonga, catch a hare by lana bastašić and how to kidnap the rich by rahul raina in a local thrift shop for dirt cheap! books by african and asian authors are so hard to come by here, usually I have to order them on the internet, but i was lucky this time.

    Dimension 20 is incredible! Brennan is such a talented DM and the the intrepid heroes work so well together as improvers and role-players. Dropout, the streaming service D20 is on is the best streaming service out there if you enjoy improv comedy and streaming services that actually care about their workers! My favourite season is either A Crown of Candy, a game of thrones style low(er) fantasy story set in a candyland world, that is much higher stakes than their other seasons; or Starstruck, a sci-fi space opera set in the world of the Starstruck comics which were written by Brennan's mom, that has some of my favourite D20 characters of all time in it.

    • @aficklefangirl2566
      @aficklefangirl2566 4 дня назад

      as far as my D&D characters, I have: A tiefling oath of redemption paladin who was a lycanthrope in a cult for Malar before the campaign, thus the oath of redemption, and was the the first character I ever played! She is still one of my favourites and I got so emotional when we wrapped up her campaign. An eladrin fiend warlock who comes from a very important wizarding family and could just never get wizardry. she studied hard but just couldn't cast. so she was approached by mephistopheles, the devil of wizards, and he offered her spell casting in return for converting wizards to his service. A firbolg life cleric and wildfire druid who is on her year abroad adventuring. She is very naive and gullible and has a wildfire spirit companion in the form of monarch butterfly faerie dragon. A sea-elf tempest cleric who is trying to find the assassin who killed her fiancee, who also happened to be her princess and the person she was charged with protecting. She is also currently the number one suspect for her people so she is on the run. A melusine (mechanically elf with a swim speed) magical trickster rogue who is a member of a society dedicated to bringing back King Arthur. she has recently begun having visions and receiving messages from someone who she believes to be the lady of the lake trying to get her to find powerful artefacts in support of the mission to bring Arthur back.

I first saw "The Quiet Girl" last March (2023) at my local independent cinema, and there's not a day goes by that I don't think about it. The film is only 95 minutes long, so set aside some time when you can turn your phone off, get rid of any pesky flies, and sit back and watch it undisturbed, "The Quiet Girl" is in Irish and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film last year, but lost out to "All Quiet on the Western Front", an inferior film, in my opinion.

    I start reading W&P in January 2024. I have been taking it very slow. A chapter a day. Now just starting Book 12. Some parts of the book can be a little tedious but so many nuggets of wisdom, fun, despair and love. The characters are so interesting. Pierre is an obvious standout but you have Natascha, Mary, Andrew and Count Rostov to name a few. This book gives you battles, comets, balls and life in 1800s Russia warts and all. ❤ it!

      One battle scene I really enjoyed was Pierre embroiled in the Battle of Borodino. In his usual bumbling way he was there are a spectator, whilst men died left, right and centre around him. One of Europes bloodiest battles. Tolstoy is a genius. Also in the first battle at the beginning of the book the French trick the Russians and cross the bridge, showing that in most of these battles they really are being led by donkeys, with zero military strategy.

    Has anyone ever asked Penguin what is going on here?

    I recommend watching the BBC TV adaptation (edit: the one from 2016 with Lily James & Paul Dano)! It’s so SO good and it’s what made me wanna read it. My general rule with long classics that have a large cast of characters is to watch a film or tv adaptation first to familiarize myself with the characters, which is funny because I hate to do that for any other type of book, and stubbornly stay away from their adaptations until I’ve read the book.

      This is such a good idea! I’m definitely going to watch it now, and will do this with other long classics before I read them!

      @@xneenz I remember the affair with Anatole and Natasha being particularly smoldering.

      @@lyramidsummer5508 yess, the affair with Anatole was my favorite part!! They had so much chemistry and now I have a massive crush on Callum Turner because of this show. And the soundtrack is DIVINE. I immediately ordered a copy of W&P after that episode lol.

    Late to this video, but oh well. I collect Everyman’s Library. Very affordable for what you get. Those are the ones I’m really building my collection around. But also I have a lot of Word Cloud Classics. They are colorful and pretty, but they don’t hold up that well with extended use so worth noting. If money is no issue then Easton Press… They are the most stunning, highest quality books I know. I would love to get a few later on. Thanks for a great video!

    Another beautiful edition that is reasonably priced is the world cloud classics. I gave a few of them and love them.

    Russian classics take me at least half a year to read. Funny that you don't like the war parts of War and Peace. I'd probably be the same though.

      That would have been me if I wasn’t vlogging it I fear! And even then, took me a LONG time compared to other books! 💚
