I recommend watching the BBC TV adaptation (edit: the one from 2016 with Lily James & Paul Dano)! It’s so SO good and it’s what made me wanna read it. My general rule with long classics that have a large cast of characters is to watch a film or tv adaptation first to familiarize myself with the characters, which is funny because I hate to do that for any other type of book, and stubbornly stay away from their adaptations until I’ve read the book.

This is such a good idea! I’m definitely going to watch it now, and will do this with other long classics before I read them!

@@xneenz I remember the affair with Anatole and Natasha being particularly smoldering.

@@lyramidsummer5508 yess, the affair with Anatole was my favorite part!! They had so much chemistry and now I have a massive crush on Callum Turner because of this show. And the soundtrack is DIVINE. I immediately ordered a copy of W&P after that episode lol.

This is on my tbr list. I have a 1941 red hardcover edition. It's inscribed from a mother to her daughter which I found interesting.

I start reading W&P in January 2024. I have been taking it very slow. A chapter a day. Now just starting Book 12. Some parts of the book can be a little tedious but so many nuggets of wisdom, fun, despair and love. The characters are so interesting. Pierre is an obvious standout but you have Natascha, Mary, Andrew and Count Rostov to name a few. This book gives you battles, comets, balls and life in 1800s Russia warts and all. ❤ it!

I listened to the audio, whilst reading along. This helped me with the Russian names.

I totally agree!! Best way to read it is slowly to take it all in. So glad you’re enjoying it!

One battle scene I really enjoyed was Pierre embroiled in the Battle of Borodino. In his usual bumbling way he was there are a spectator, whilst men died left, right and centre around him.
One of Europes bloodiest battles. Tolstoy is a genius.
Also in the first battle at the beginning of the book the French trick the Russians and cross the bridge, showing that in most of these battles they really are being led by donkeys, with zero military strategy.

Many / most wars are senseless things but some, WW2 for example had to happened as Hitler, an evil person had taken France so was THAT close to us ... I have not read War & Peace but have read Anna Karenina which I enjoyed despite finding her most exasperating!

Russian classics take me at least half a year to read.
Funny that you don't like the war parts of War and Peace. I'd probably be the same though.

That would have been me if I wasn’t vlogging it I fear! And even then, took me a LONG time compared to other books! 💚
