another one worth looking at is Everyman's Library editions - they have a huge range and they're at the mid point of your price ranges but they're supposed to be high quality. and you'll often see the older ones in charity shops etc
yes, I own one with 2 Anne Bronte novels. It was a pleasure to read from. The paper is quality and font is so readable. It is cloth bound with a ribbon, simple covers, introduction. Cost about $30.00 American.
@@LydLoves these editions have really bible thin pages lol you can almost see thru them but sometimes the print is too small for me to enjoy easily. I hate small print !!!
I'm a huge fan of both Evergreen and Library of America editions. Just picked up LoA's three book James Baldwin box set. Look for their sales from time to time.
Last summer I read all of Austen and I really wanted to celebrate by getting a beautiful collection. I almost got the clothbound but the two that I own already are soooo faded and I never even read from them! Just from sitting on my shelf. But then I discovered the MacMillan collection!!! I adore them! The cover art is always stunning and very true to the book and I love the quotes they choose for the back. I also saw you hold up Far From the Madding Crowd. That's my all time favorite classic! But I don't know anyone else who likes it.
That's such a fun way to celebrate reading all her books! I love the MacMillian collection, I'm so glad you got a set you enjoy! I really liked Far From the Madding Crowd too, I think it's underrated!
LOVE the folio society editions, especially when I can find them second hand. I also love finding cloth bound editions from the early 1900s. Beautiful, and well worn.
I wonder if the sprays I use to set my watercolor paintings would seal the cover print that is rubbing off on the penguin cloth bound classics. I will try that and see if that protects the paint that comes off!
Currently the most prized editions in my collection are Easton Press leather bound editions. I collect used copies when I can find them in good condition at good prices. New editions from Easton Press start at $89.90 for their "The Classics" collection, and go up from there for their other collections.
Macmillan's are the absolute best quality for the money. The ONLY issue I have is the size. If they were just a couple inches larger, they would be perfect.,
Late to this video, but oh well. I collect Everyman’s Library. Very affordable for what you get. Those are the ones I’m really building my collection around. But also I have a lot of Word Cloud Classics. They are colorful and pretty, but they don’t hold up that well with extended use so worth noting. If money is no issue then Easton Press… They are the most stunning, highest quality books I know. I would love to get a few later on. Thanks for a great video!
Love the original collector's library books when Barnes and Noble produced them, before they sold to Pan Macmillan. They are pretty much the same quality except dust jackets are striped in different colors. Also love the Pan Macmillans....
@@LydLoves they are super pretty in black leather but a more affordable and likely collection for me would be the Chiltern classics I love love love their sewn binding! I know they will last forever! I have four of them and every 6 months or so I’ll get another but I also love the modern look of the ones from Union Square with the signature classics in graphics they’re gorgeous too! I love special editions !! I’m always so jelly when they come in a subscription box those are so rare to get!
I have been wanting to get one of the Vintage Quarterbound Classics for a while because I absolutely love the look of them. I hope they make more books in that edition as well!!
I think I have the most of the Penguin classic black ones. But before those was the orange ones so I have even more of those. I like the look of the Penguin English Library collection. Very pretty
Really enjoyed this - thanks for the descriptions on all these. Now I want to start my own collection! One request maybe on a future video is to give us a more info on the actual reading experience, e.g. the paper color/quality, the font style/size, and if the books lay flat when open.
I also have a copy of the Seasons Edition Dracula that was given to me as a gift! I love it so much and keep it on display. (I have another edition for reading.) :)
I have one vintage clothbound classic (Stoner) and I want to collect them all! The Night Circus one is especially stunning! I love the vintage watercolour classics, such as the Woolf collection, the Bronte sisters or the Austen collection. I collect the Penguin English library where I can, and have found a few second hand. They hold up well :) I can be quite rough with my books, and sometimes my black classic spines look less black as time goes on. But the English Library are floppy mostly, so no spine damage!
I've just recently bought myself a copy of the Penguin English Library Collection's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and I love it! Not only is it gorgeous but the quality feels beautiful and like it's really durable. It's also quite floppy and will be a pleasure to hold and read. I really want more of these editions!
Great overview! I love the English library editions and the Chiltern classics ones! Both are beautiful and very different vibes from each other haha. I have many from the english library and they look so colorful on my shelves but the Chiltern ones I "save" for my absolute favorite books only since they are a bit more expensive.
How do you feel about Oxford World Classics? I do like Penguin Classics, however I would rather by the Oxford. They are similarly priced. If I was rich, I would love to buy the Folio Society books. I would love The Song of Achilles! It's gorgeous!!!
I have a few and I really like them too! they’re great because they show up in charity shops often so I have a little collection. And me too, you can’t beat the Folio Society ones!
This was such a fun video, right up my alley, as I’ve been getting into collecting some classic editions. Love the Penguin black classics, Macmillan Collector’s Library, Chiltern, Harper Muse Painted editions, Folio Society, and Penguin Modern Classics - my personal fav and of which I have the most editions. For something similar to Penguin black, I would recommend the Oxford World’s Classics. I like that the spines aren’t black so they don’t show the white creases like the Penguin editions. One of the most beautiful paperback editions are the Penguin Threads, which replicate embroidery on their covers. I have been looking for a copy of Little Women in this edition with no luck. There’s also the Penguin Russian classics editions which replicate vintage Russian textiles on the covers. And of course the Penguin Deluxe editions, which breathe new life into the artwork for classic lit. Puffin in Bloom is a hard bound selection of children’s classics and Jane Austen novels that are smaller in size, with whimsical, floral artwork. And finally there’s the Cranford hard bound collection, which like Chiltern, are very floral in design. I believe you have to join their club to get their books, but I have seen individual copies in the secondhand market. BTW, did you know that the artwork for the Penguin clothbound classics and the Penguin English Classics were done by the same designer? That’s why they look so similar.😊
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! I think we really have similar tastes in book editions too! I have a few of the Oxford World Classics, maybe I will include them (and some of the others you mentioned! if I do a part 2 to this video. Thank you for your lovely comment!
These cloth bounds though don’t open far enough to lie flat on the table and so the cloth ripped I don’t like that. Plus cloth is so susceptible to rot too.
I love the chiltern! I have Jane Austen and a few others in that one. I’m really surprised the Easton press leather bounds didn’t get a shout. Not your style?
I don’t love the clothbound either! Mine ripped when I tried to open the book just to flat! Hey I love that wall color do you recall the name of the color??

Yess, Everyman! I had them in my notes but ran out of time to talk about, but it’s good to know they’re high quality, I don’t own any!💚

Chiltern’s books are my fav. I love their size, font size, hardcover-ness, bookmark, and non-white pages & the thickness. Hands down, best for me.
Ooh sounds good, can’t wait to get my hands on some!

They are so beautiful, I wish I could have a whole library of them!
I would love to see which are your favorites to actually read. I'm not as interested in the cover as I am the font and print quality. 😊

Easton Press also has gorgeous editions leather bound with gold edges and bookmarks. I got one as a gift and I know it was well over $125.

My tip for others who stick with the clothbounds is to lightly hairspray them.
ooh great tip, thank you!

Another beautiful edition that is reasonably priced is the world cloud classics. I gave a few of them and love them.
I hadn't heard of them before, they're so pretty!
I'd like to on a hunch, guess that your favourite colour is green.
How did you guess 😅💚
That Dracula copy is amazing! ❤

The clothbound give me nostalgic vibes. My parents have a library that is filled exclusively with clothbound books that have lasted them years!!!
Aw I wish mine lasted like that! I do love the feel of a clothbound book!💚

@@LydLoves oh nice! maybe for a part two one day :) I have a few I found second hand (they are a bit pricy) and they seem to hold up well.

Interesting. It never occurred to me that anyone would collect paperbacks. Hey there fellow commenters. Do you also collect paperbacks?
loved this video ❤
Thank you!! So glad you liked it!💚
Puffin clothbound > penguin clothbound
all the vintage red spines' covers are designed by an artist to reflect the vibe of the author which is why they don't really match each other
Ohh that makes sense! I love that idea 💚
you just hit the worst note one could ever hit
huh
