Cassette Deck Tactile Switches.. when they go wrong, they go really wrong!
They go wrong quite a lot, but did you know these switches actually have an usual method of operation? The way they are designed to sit on the boards means that if one goes, they generally all go. If they don't, they can seem possessed.
Here's a quick video featuring such a repair and a run through as to why they're that little bit more special than your average switch.

Why does this £350 Nakamichi cassette deck refuse to play?! Argh!

This deck is one of Nakamichis later models with an upgraded Sankyo transport. It has an intermittent issue where it stops when playing - could it be the reel sensors or the reel motor? I quite like the aesthetic of drawer fed cassette decks too, but I do like to keep my heads super clean. With this design you would be relying on a head cleaning cassette rather than manual cleaning, and I am not a fan of those. Alternatively you are whipping the top off all the time, not a fan of that either. It would be nice to have one as an occasional use deck, I get that.

    I wonder why they spend the effort with all these resistors, just to spare a few wires from the pcb to the microcontroller. It seems to me as if they ran out of digital I/O pins and had to do the resistor trick, where they only need a single analog input. Or maybe the flex cable and the connector become cheaper when they have a few less wires, and that overweighs the cost of the resistors.

    • @pwrestoration

      It's bamboozling, it's not like they need to save track space. Maybe when they were first introduced they took up more room, and they just.. retained it?

    Outstandingly precise and detailed! I wish every "how to" video on RUclips were like this. Many thanks! Got my deck working beautifully again. One suggestion ... where you take the cables off of the circuit board between 3:03 - 3:09, it bears mentioning that those cables have a clip at the bottom that holds them to the receiving end. I was on my way to damaging my circuit board before realizing this and then used an extremely small screwdriver to help pry the clip away while tugging on it. Thanks again.

    THanks for this video! It's rally needed as it's not intuitive. I've figured out the same when a second-hand JVC AVR was showing the same issues.The IC measures the resultng voltage from the resistance in the circuit and figures out what it was commanded to do. It's interesting the values are chosen with such odd values: 2, 2.7, 5.6, 10, 30. Pressing any combination of two buttons will not result in a duplicated resistance value, since functions like next song require pressing play+rewind. I tried the 12Voltvids solution of cutting tem open and cleaning the little metal dome and contacts for oxidation, but it's just so much easier to order replacement tactile buttons.

    Tactile switches tarnish over time so the resistance when pressed is higher than zero. I've had great success removing them and soaking them in alcohol in a zip lock bag and ultrasonic cleaner. The alcohol evaporates pretty quickly. I'm experimenting with another liquid cleaner specifically for removing tarnishing and oxidisation. Some decks use tactiles that are difficult to get hold of so cleaning them this way is a good option. I've not had any returns yet. Hahaha, I just heard the comment about tapeheads forum. Totally get where you are coming from, but there are reasonable folk on there that do take their medication 😅

    Great video as always. Quick question - do you know of any available replacements for the mode select motor? This seems to be the same in most Sony decks, I have a TC-K 620 which seemed to have been incorrectly reassembled during a belt change and it seems the mode selection motor is dead. Would be keen to try and swap it for a new replacement one if such are available.

    • @pwrestoration
      @pwrestoration 3 дня назад

      Hey, thanks! That's a difficult one. I've always ended up replacing from donor decks but that motor hardly ever dies. Does it spin when powered directly from a power supply? I think it's 6v but it's an odd size, and a long shaft too. I would say definitely have a good test of it and a hunt round for something else causing a problem. If it does spin when powered directly with 6v it could be a cap / resistor in the transport that's failed. If not, and you get mega stuck, email me. I might have one lying about you can have 👍

    I learned about this when I was trying to fix a Pioneer CD player with some buttons that didn't work at all. The switches seemed fine, so I looked into the service manual and sussed out the whole resistance thing. It's a good public service to get this info out. In my case though, some numpty had done something with the control board, and there was a solder blob causing a short between a couple of lines on the control IC - got rid of that and all the buttons started working, although as I had bought replacements (which were not cheap, as Pioneer in their infinite wisdom used 2-pin tact switches which are much rarer) I replaced them anyway as a few were "soft" and/or required a harder push to get them to work.

    • @pwrestoration
      @pwrestoration 3 дня назад

      It kind of blew my mind a little bit to be honest as I didn't know myself until recently. I guess it's a great way to pack in all those buttons without much space taken up by tracks? But then more components and resistors!

    • @jasejj
      @jasejj 3 дня назад

      @@pwrestoration I guess it's also so you can have a control IC with a single analogue input rather than a dozen binary ones. Although I have to say I was kind of expecting either a matrix (like a computer keyboard) or a multiplex (like an LED display).

    Hi what a fantastic video my friend. Thank you. I wanted to share my problem with a similar deck. Mine is TC-K815S. I paid a lot for it about 1 year ago. It is in mint condition both cosmetically and mechanically. It was actually as good as brand new. You won't believe, in 1 year that I have it, I recorded only 2 songs. I've kept it ON for almost every day, reason being I keep it with source button ON to watch LED dance to tv, cd, tuner or whatever I am listening. All of a sudden, it doesn't play. To get it to play, I used to press play and stop super quickly a few times and it would then play. During the last 1 month, that fast finger work of play stop play had gone to 20 to 30 times. Now to get it to play, I've had to remove the door cover, press play and lift the pinch roller with a screw driver all at the same time and only then it plays. I am not techy but I do feel it's all just a matter of dust and needs cleaning. I am just too afraid to remove the transport. Woukd it be possible to clean other areas you may know that could fix this issue. Also sometime I press open to eject and I hear motor and it doesn't open so then I quickly keep pressing open close and then it opens and closes fine. I am very sad to see what has happened to my deck and seek your advice. Thanks and regards, Sami.

    • @pwrestoration
      @pwrestoration 8 дней назад

      Sounds like the tactile buttons have died. They operate in a weird way, in series almost. You have to replace all of them to make one work. What's happening when you lift the pinch roller is you're manually putting it into play mode, and it will play. Almost like bumping off a car. I would replace the tactile buttons on the front. Maybe £2.

    • @VinylsFinal
      @VinylsFinal 7 дней назад

      @pwrestoration Thank you so much for your kind and informative reply. You mean the play button area, behind the plate where I press play? I thought this has something to do with cleaning the 2 sensors you showed in your videos, where you mentioned if not clean it keeps stopping. My deck once playing never stops though and works fine and stops when the tape ends. Forward rewind is fine, but when I get it playing by play and quickly screw driver pushing the pinch roller up, while playing if I press forward or rewind it does forward or rewind and play icon stays on screen. I need to then again press stop and play with screen driver action pushing the pinch roller up and it plays. It usually used forward and rewind but now that has also stopped while playing. With play, it forwards and rewinds fine. Thank you so much. I'll keep reading your response, learn and try to do this, although I am very scared not to further damage it.

    • @VinylsFinal
      @VinylsFinal 2 дня назад

      @pwrestoration Hi Paul. I hope you are doing well. I wanted to tell you, when I press play, it does lift a bit but doesn't engage into play mode until I remove the door and lift it immediately after pressing play. I am so sad to see this issue amd seel your guidance. I've seen some of your videos to remove the transport and wanted to know should I remove and clean. Could be be something related to belt. Although it plays fine. I've also done something else and I hope it's not a mistake. There's a black plastic screw type. I turned it a bit and when I played the treble has gone. While playing I turned it again and brought back the treble but I just pray I haven't messed it up :( This was my best deck and I've done recording many times to perfection from tv, cd and even turntable. Please give it a thought one more time, as I feel you might identify something easier to fix. Tactile in my ignorant head feels ok as it stays in play when I lift it and while it doesn't play without lifting, it does make a eletronoc engagement sound when I press play and does lift a bit but not till play mode. Appreciate your knowledgeable thoughts Paul. Thanking you.

    In the early 1980s, when I was a teenager, I lived just outside Glasgow and behind my house was a recycling centre. I wish you could have seen this place. Stacked up on each other were tons of old record players and radiograms. Dansettes and Garrards, for example. Also, inside the place were lots of BSR decks. Lots of old electric fires as well and other great electrical items. All these items were in great condition and were ready to be destroyed. I managed to sneak in at night save a large number of Dansette record players and BSR decks. They were all in great working order. The people that handed these items in were horrible. If they saw you at the centre, they would drive away, so that you wouldn't get their items. Their vehicles were always packed full of stuff.

    Had to work on the same deck at almost the same time. The mechanism that lifts and lowers the heads was stuck. I know you can try reconditioning the old motors by adding a drop of oil and running them for extended periods but results vary - as you noted there is sometimes excessive play on the shaft and I had instances when the 'recondition motor' seemed to work great but would start squealing / whining after the deck has been on for like 1h+. Replacement Mabuchi EG530AD2B are only a few EUR / GBP - they fit perfectly and speed wise I found they pretty much don't need any adjustment if you got new or decent condition belts - last one run 2996Hz when playing a 3000Hz tone from a calibration tape.

      I've got some in stock, what's the symptoms that's led you to needing one? Honestly any 12v cassette motor that spins the right way (CCW) will work.

      Thanks for getting back. My repair man told me the motor runs too fast even with on-board speed adjustments

    Nice repair. Back in the 1980s, as a young man, I was obsessed with all types of cassette mechanisms. I loved playing and repairing them, but there would always be something wrong with them, such as wow and flutter, hiss, bad azimuth alignment, pinch roller problems. Then you would have the cassette tape problems, such as it chewing up, tightening up, the pressure pad getting clogged with ferric oxide. When the CD player came along, this was the ideal machine I wanted. You would press a button and it would play each track instantly, with nice clear sound and no wow or flutter, or hiss. I never looked at another cassette mechanism again. They were fun at the time, but I would never go back to them.

    the reason why it has 2 decks is so that the person being interviewed can have a copy to give to a solicitor, I have a recorded interview of a friend of mine handed to him after requesting a copy, both tapes have a timed voice over that will match the copy the police have

      It also will automatically rollover the recording to tape 2, quite snazzy

    My father was a nakamichi user but so many times i saw him send them cassette decks and not only to repair, so i think they all were badly built. The so talked about Dragon was my worst deck ever and bought it twice ,once in late 82 and other in 1993, but remenber to record cassettes in a 1000 with a nr module for my first family car, at home i recorded reels, a car that came with a pioneer radio cassette player ,while all others had 8-track cartridges , this in a BMW 76 523i what a car , i still have it. about this deck i thought this were the best series but maybe because at the time i didn´t use it much, the deck was a "cassette deck 1" as all the functions as the CR-7 or the ZX-9

    Excellent. Please post any more you have like this. I have a laguna 2 1.9 dci here in Portugal in absolutely beautiful nick and would like to keep it. Word to the wise, cost of living here very reasonable, except vehicles and a few other things. My lovely 2005 Laguna was 2.5k. And a bargain, relatively speaking. Just cleaned the egr valve this very morning, after much youtube study, all ok. For renolink, one needs an approved obd adaptor, genuine renolink software and paid for activation code, about 135 euro. I already tried the chinese cracked software version, 25 quid, full of viruses and can brick your entire system, it is currently in a portugese landfill after it freaked my pc out, sure as hell did not connect it to the car. Good luck and God bless all.

    First of all, excellent job! One thing about this deck stood out to me; this is the first time i have seen low resolution meters, such as these, that have a peak hold function. Impressive.

    I have a couple of sony TC-V7 drawer fed decks , the belt kit comes with 5 belts and i've fitted 4 but can't find where the 5th goes, I do know it drives the slotted wheel for the light sensor as it plays for a few seconds then switches off, I managed to remove the top of the plastic cover over the transport and shone a torch in there and it plays fine, the moment I switch the torch off the the tape stops, I have the service manual but still can't find a photo or text regarding how to get into it, i'd love to have just 1 working at least (both decks have the same problem)
