Last of line cassette by Yamaha and produced until about '05..i have 3 Yamaha decks..KX 580 and 3 head 670 and one of these and it stands up to both of them in sound..Yamaha went out with a bang with this one
Nice little repair and it’s good you saved it from being thrown out. Is there any other adjustments you can make on those decks for the recording quality? I’ve got the same deck and any recording made on it sounds good when played back on that deck but it sounds very flat and dull when played on any other deck! I tried adjusting the azimuth but it made no difference.
Sometimes its really difficult when switching decks to keep a good sound. I've got a few decks like that, you record a tape and it's great and then switch it out and it's off. Just differences in calibration between the two 😊 Does all tapes sound flat and dull on that deck? I always say a head clean sometimes makes a mountain of difference even if it looks clean. It usually isn't.
@@pwrestoration I’m beginning to think it could just be the difference in calibration of the deck as it’s in mint condition and I’ve cleaned the heads with no improvement. From memory it seems to play other tapes ok but ones recorded on it sound poor on any other deck. I’ve also got a Yamaha kx-650 3 head deck and that make beautiful recordings that sound great on any deck. Playing tapes recorded on the 393 deck still sound poor on the 650 even though they are both Yamaha decks!
@@Sierra747 that is unusual. I don't have a three head deck at the moment because I just didn't have rack space, but I love their convenience. Awaiting a Nak deck which should arrive Tuesday so hopefully that will fill the void. Too many decks!
@@pwrestoration I have too many decks too. I have 6 wired up to my amp including 4 3 head decks! I’d love a nak deck but they are very expensive. Will you make a video on it when you get it?
@@Sierra747 definitely. I have one from a friend to rectify dodgy recording levels and one I bought for myself as a bit of an eBay risk. They arrived today but I've not opened them yet, hopefully this week 😄
I am facing a little confusion about a capacitor c107 ,in cicuit diagram it shows 4700/5.5 and physically I found 4.7/5.5 what is right ? Which one is correct to replace? Please clarify
@@pwrestoration thanx for your prompt reply. Originally marked 4.7 mf 5.5 volt does it means 4.7 million fard equivalent to 4700 μf. Its original from rubycon and I am not able to find in 5.5 volt
The door hinge design on these Yamaha is pretty poor in my opinion the spring is quite strong and causes the hinge to wear on the left side . On my Yamaha kx580 I have dropped the spring from where it is located to just resting on the metal of the cassette chassis ,eject is a bit slower but less tension on the plastic door hinge .My kx580 is a decent sounding deck only problem was a dodgy Panasonic motor seemed to have quite a bit of wear on the com yet the deck itself was in the best condition of any deck I own really clean transport and no head wear, why the motor was so bad not sure it was fluctuateing in speed quite a bit I swapped it for a mabuchi motor I had.
I have the 380 and 390. There is so little difference between them.. except the 390 has 'cassette stabilizer' written underneath 'GF Head'. Otherwise there's not much difference. They all look identical.
I found they produced great sound and recordings but if you try and play tapes from a Yamaha on another deck, they don't sound as good. Seems to be echoed on a few forums.

Does it look like it's original? Still has original solder, no marks etc? If so replace like for like.

I think the door design is very poor too. Does yours have a spring on both sides?
Help my yamaha deck not reconize normal tape only metal tape how i fix this problem
Leaf switches inside the door, at the topmofnthe transport. Give em a play
