- Be honest, have you ever seen or heard of one of these bad boys? This weird mongrel of a CD and Cassette Deck mixup was Sonys attempt to be cool and relevant in 1991.
It didn't go so well. sales were low and the price was high.
Either way this one needs love, so follow me while I give it!

I personally dislike drawed fed cassette decks, i had a Denon DRS-810. But not being able to clean the head or pinch rollers easily really freaked me out. This one looks really nice though, good repair!
Compact Cassette was always crab.
they did DAT too, that is good.
I hate all consumer tape solutions, they all did a very bad job !
why people need that now, just old crab it is, please recycle it all !
@@lucasrem It's a fun hobby, just like vinyl. And just like vinyl, tape can sounds very good. You just need to keep your equipment in a good state and store them properly.
@@lucasrem - there was some Yamaha deck and someone (maybe "What Hi-Fi?") made a test. They compared this deck and Sony MDS-JE500/510 and according to their test, tape deck was better than minidisc deck. Of course, results were obtained on laboratory equipment. I doubt that anyone can hear that a cassette player is better than a minidisc.
Great video. I’ve not seen that deck before. Interesting seeing the transport setup was a modified 611s unit.
What a cool concept, I didn't know they even existed.
Loving your channel, great explanation of what you're doing and why. Love the humour too.
this is crab
i owned a Sony VHS, able to receive the military US shows on TV, it did digital SP/Dif too, happy i trashed it !
consumer crab !
What???@@lucasrem
Strange about the lack of bias adjust...in about the same time frame Yamaha had the drawer format 3 head KX 10 which didn't have bias adjust either..when i fist saw the top of the mech i could see marks on top and first thought was ''Someone's been in this one before'' lol
Yamaha KX-10 it`s with auto tape tunning system, so it`s ok
Had to work on the same deck at almost the same time. The mechanism that lifts and lowers the heads was stuck. Also the small mode select belt was loose, it was something like 35mm *1.5mm and somehow it was out of stock in all the shops around.
I just enjoy the rambling fixathon videos, its nice to watch when im workin on my own stuff.
You don't see what I cut out, I don't half ramble haha
An interesting looking tape deck. I used to love looking in the Hi fi Shops , at all the different equiipment. No, what there is , all looks the same , But I'm always expect more on the inside. Just had my Aiwa XKS 7000 serviced , sounds amazing . Great video
Thanks!
Nice work on a niche product, sir! I am a JVC fan and I don't recall that company succumbing to this niche style but I can appreciate the execution!
5:44 Yes! There it is. A true specimen of a Matsushita (Panasonic) motor (02 Aug 1991)! Thanks for the video.
Face reveal, and Oscar-winning acting!
You make these repairs abd servicing look so easy. Nice one.
Did the oil come with the applicator? If not, what oil would you recommend please?
Shucks! It did, they are here:

@@pwrestoration Thanks. I ordered one.
I have a couple of sony TC-V7 drawer fed decks , the belt kit comes with 5 belts and i've fitted 4 but can't find where the 5th goes, I do know it drives the slotted wheel for the light sensor as it plays for a few seconds then switches off, I managed to remove the top of the plastic cover over the transport and shone a torch in there and it plays fine, the moment I switch the torch off the the tape stops, I have the service manual but still can't find a photo or text regarding how to get into it, i'd love to have just 1 working at least (both decks have the same problem)
seems to share quite a few similarities with the cassette player used in the "la Scala" component system TC-S1 - it had a drawer feed mechanism Dolby B C & S HX-Pro full auto reverse etc
Though the TC-S1 has a 2 head set up that rotates - but generally not a bad little deck which can be had for not much money - belt change is a bit of a pain though
Nice job 👍 Cool machine!
Okay why didn’t they do their with the Sony TC S1? That would have made more sense since that had Dolby S. Also where is the calibration feature? There is no manual or automatic calibration feature. Even the Sony TC S1 had that! I find this unacceptable.
Even though I’m probably going to start looking for one on eBay.
I'll be honest I think it's overbiased from factory, it records and plays very well. Type 2 seems good too! But yeah. No bias. No headphone jack or level. No Dolby S, no auto cal and no bias! So odd!
@@pwrestoration My problem with that is that without a manual calibration it probably won’t be able to handle BASF pure chromes. Because the Japanese prefer their ferro-cobalt’s. Meaning it won’t record right. To be fair most Japanese auto cal systems don’t like European chromes.
@@anthonybrunotheoddVery true, but BASF cassettes have got to be like Hens Teeth these days surely!
I used to like my TDK SA's and SA-X's back in the day, and Sony UX-S were also very decent, and used to be suited to Aiwa and Technics decks, which I was a fan of.
@@hermanmunster3358 I have a few BASF Pro Chrome’s.
This model came out a good few years before the La Scala (S1) system. There was also no minidisc for the S7, unfortunately, but there was for the La Scala.
Back when SONY didn't make junk.
Relative to all the Korean and (even worse) Chinese crap that replaced Sony in the mainstream, they still don't make junk.
Sony or Hisense... it's not even a contest.
@@jasejj I agree completely.I didn't mean to imply that All of their newer stuff was junk, just that back then they made no junk at all. Sony has always had a full line of products covering all price points, but when they compete at the bottom.....well just take eXplode for example 😥, I could go on all day blah blah blah. Heck I Love SONY, Best brand to work on to repair, super design/construction and always the best service manuals.
they aways did cheap junk too, this ...???
@@lucasrem There's a difference between cheap, and junk.
You can have good quality cheap stuff (which I would argue were the low end Sony of the day), and expensive junk (pretty much all of the badly-made but expensive and tarted-up to look premium "hifi" equipment released by Chinese-owned "brands" of today).
A very simple demonstration of the difference - a 1980s Sanyo amplifier would have plastic knobs for the pots to keep prices low, but these were metal inside and had brass inserts. The new rubbish has very pretty brushed aluminium controls but it's all cheap brittle plastic behind the facade.
One is cheap but good quality, the other is cheap garbage made to look nice.
@jasonj4337 sanyo barely made anything of quality.
I have TC-S7. I got it from friend of mine. He had amp, CD player, tuner and this deck. He gave that system to his friend as a wedding present and friend didn't want tape deck - so I got it.
I already recorded my tapes onto AIWA 808 so this one is only a player.
Unfortunately, I moved abroad so I don't know what is situation with deck - belts and all other moving parts.
I remember that CD player didn't have digital (optical) output so I am not interested in that CD player. Someone already mentioned, there is no MD for that system and reason is very simple - this system is from 1991., and MD came on market in 1992.
I'd like to see the matching amp, what's the code, do you know?
Ciao
Watching your spares box right now, just wanted to let you know mate! Keep it up! 👍🏻
Haha I don't follow but it's always good to have spares!
@@pwrestoration@ 23.17 you’re wondering if anyone is still watching at this point.. (showing the spares box).
@@Xavier-ii5kn @Xavier-ii5kn ah yes! Sorry I think it's just you haha but it is appreciated!
It's a shame that it doesn't have bias adjust but at least it is saved from the bin 👍
Absolutely love this northern (?) accent. (Aside from me being a Sony CDP-R3 / DTC-2000 owner).
Haha thanks, I'm not a fan of my own voice like!
Nice unit, great repair, do u show how u hook up the signal thing that shows the grapy & frequency? (Not referring to the scope). The part that shows a graph when u did the high pitched voice to demonstrate the frequency read out
I don't but it's dead easy, you just plug into it like an amp. Drop us an email if you're struggling with one
@@pwrestoration oh ok nice, I didn't know it was that easy. I will definitely email you if the need arises, thank you kindly
Not quite £500. I bought the entire S7 Scenario system; CD, cassette, amp, tuner, and matching speakers, for £799 in House of Fraser (sale price). Originally about £1,400. About 1 year later, I emigrated, and the entire system is boxed up in my parents' loft. All mint, like new. Any offers, anyone? Lol
Performance of the tape deck was excellent on Type2 & Metal, not so great on Type 1 (but i never used Type 1, so...whatever!) Possibly the bias was just set a touch high for Type1. A bit stupid to not have bias fine adj. on the front. Very nice system, anyway.
It's definitely overbiased. I've got a type 2 in now and it sounds great. I imagine they're biased towards a certain model of Sony tapes.
I’ve got this deck too and replaced the belts and “calibrated” it. Works and sounds fine but what I don’t like about it is that the capstan is always spinning even when not playing a tape.
The K661S, the transport this is from, is the same. On the upgrade, the K661S, it only spins when playing. Eats belts for breakfast due to the high usage of the capstan.
Nice Video. I have a Scenario 7 system, haven't used it in quite some time. Now that I have watched this I am sure the belts have turned to goo. :)
Deck Tech Belts 👍👍
Almost looks like a NAD that thing! 😂
Why you need NAD, the design ????
CRAB !
@@lucasrem... and the winner of best use of English in a RUclips post goes to...
28:21 Ideally you would be calibrating bias at -20dB, as per the service manual.
Love this stuff and I admit that in a needs must situation I have taken n the lid of off a times. My most epic fix (read 'well scary') was taking my dvd based Toyota Sat Nav out of the dash and taking it apart on the coffee table. Wife was well impressed (read ' totally bemused'). Fixed it though but. The problem? Lack of lube on laser carriage rails. £500 saved for some Mr Sheen on cotton bud. Kept going for a couple of years until I changed the car. Still miss it sometimes 😢
It's more satisfying fixing something on the dining table in front of the wife haha
Nice job Paul. Weird that the model number etc was on the right foot. Never seen that before, seems like there was plenty of space on the fascia, but whatever.... probably Sony being 'cool'. 😄
Yeah I thought that placement was odd too. There's no really good reason for it being there 😅
Lovely video with nice sense of humour
Ta!
Hello here from germany. I have the same tapedack together whit the amp, CD Player and tuner. Got it all used for 200 Euros. What did you do to remove the noise from the Display? I have the same Problem. Or is there nothing i can do?
I didn't have any issues with my display - you could always try and remove / clean the big ribbon cable to it inside. But if it's broken, it'll need a replacement part I'm a fraud. They're not serviceable
Very interesting deck i do like the looks.i have a yamaha micro system that has a tape draw ,a mate gave it to me i am thinking of having a look inside to see if it has a Panasonic motor to go in my yamaha rx580.
Great resto, and a nice looking deck.
Also nice to see the man behind the magnetic screwdrivers. 👍
I have a nice Sony HiFi VCR, which I was going to use as a high quality music recorder, just for the shits snd giggles of it really. But it has a problem whereby it chews tapes.
I did a bit of digging, and found that IT also has one of those mode select gear wheel thingies, which I am led to believe could be the cause of my mangled video tapes. But I have been unable to find out what to do with the mode select switch, which is a shame, because Sony VCR's were quite desirable machines back in the day.
Any thoughts as to what I should do?
I have already cleaned the transport, pinch roller, capstan etc, and the belts are still fine with plenty of tension, and no sign of degradation, but it still chews tapes for some reason that is beyond me so far.
Cheers.
I'm unfamiliar with VCRs I'll be honest but if the pinch roller is good then usually it's the takeup reel that's the cause of chewed tapes!
It causes slack after the pinch roller. See where it's chewing the tape maybe?
Which leads me to think that the mode select switch IS the cause. Because if it ain't telling the machine to engage the take up reel, then that could be the cause.
I just don't have a scooby doo about what to do with that mode selector switch, as it has to be in a certain position when you assemble the transport, but I can't find any info on how it should be positioned when re-assembling the transport. And it sits underneath the transport, where you cannot see it, making it all the more difficult.
@@hermanmunster3358 @hermanmunster3358 do service manuals exist for VCRs?
In my experience it usually doesn't matter as the transport will detect where it is upon rebuild, and then return to a recognised mode.
It may simply need a clean but to be honest a fault in the mode select switch usually shows as not playing, or being stuck between modes. I'd be checking the mechanical parts for the takeup reel if the pinch roller is good.
Yeah, I think further investigation is needed.
Thanks bud!
They did Digital VHS too, sp.div on it you need
Cool deck but lacking basic features. Great that you extended its existence. Prices will only continue to go up.
29:28 I use Synalzaki (or however you spell it) for tone generation. Or I use audacity then I send the files to my Galaxy S9.
I have a tone generator but it can be a bit too loud.
Do you ever wish you that you never started tinkering with theses things?? They drive me up the wall at times!!!
Sometimes. When it doesn't go to plan. I'll be honest RUclips mostly gets the things that can be fixed and will work, or are economically viable. I've deleted plenty of videos halfway through filming just down to either it not being interesting to fix, or I've decided not to continue 😅
@@pwrestoration Yeah know what yo mean. learned the hard way about buying good quality belts, especially on Nakamichis!!!
I Have two of these!! I always wanted to restore them
This is your sign!
Is it me or does the deck suffer from flutter? Could also explain the jumping around on the scope.
The left channel on my scopemis pap. Need to repair the left channel selector switch really, it works with a little tap 😅
Thought this was a VHS deck at first!
very late model
You could do it on HDD back then already
I have a couple of complete 'scala' midi systems here, & (somehow, between the two sets) three of the drawer-loading midi cassette deck that went with. it's called the TC-S1, & while it's just a two-header, it's full auto-reverse, has dolby-S & a really pretty decent auto-setup routine involving tones & whatnot. neat enough little deck, same display as that one there, though not on a level with my naks & revoxes, & one thing that irritates me enormously about the deck is that the rewind & fast-forward functions don't flip when the tape is going backwards.
dammit, sony.
btw, are you a smoggy? marske here, exiled in london for professional reasons.
I also have a working TC-S1 cassette deck, working except for the display being dead (died in transit to me, I suspect the box was dropped or thrown!). All the buttons work though and the deck sounds really good so I can live with that although I suspect it might be fixable. Almost forgot, the deck has an auto Calibration button.
Haha I am, is it that obvious! Exiled elsewhere also for professional reasons 😅
how do you clean the heads with this type of cassette loading?
In reality you would have to remove the top cover. Not ideal, but perhaps that's why the cover is so readily accessible.
I’ve got a TCK611S had for 30 years.
Great deck! It might be due a service though.
@@pwrestoration yeh it had one. The belts kinda devolved in to goo. So guy up in Nelson, lancs. Serviced it and got replacement parts etc.
I have a JVC mini system from 1993 with a draw cassette unit, Cd player and a Mini Disc recorder (each as separates but they can only be run with the units amp)and its actually good in a bad way. No counter on the tape deck, you cant actually work out what direction its playing. In fact looking at your Sony its the same draw and cassette unit as in the JVC...
Is it.. this one 🙂
ruclips.net/video/2s4cjYfkF9I/видео.html
what is the size of the little belt inside the mech? the belt lit i bought did not come with it...
I'm gonna say it's about 25mm diameter but if you wait a few weeks I can measure some I have in stock, I'm away at the moment. Remind me! Any k661 mode select belt will fit.
Best drawer on tapedeck I ever had was from Braun, the C 2/3. Massive drawer and mechanics, but sound was only mediocre.
Hmm I might have a look for one!
@@pwrestoration The whole atelier series is made like a tank😊. Had tuner, tape, amp and cd
I have an issue with my 680 zx. The meter works for one cassette, sometimes only one side, then doesn‘t work anymore. Next day it works shortly again. Think I have to resolder something.
Mostly all sony products in that color from that time had a yellow display
Huh, who'd have thunk it
Can you put a window in the lid.
You could...
Lovely job! But what's the point of having three heads without a bias control? Isn't that the main purpose of three heads, so you can adjust bias in real time? Weird!
I don't know really, I like to hear what's being recorded but you raise a good point!
So THAT'S what you look like! I'm any case, I'm genuinely confused. Use a 3 head (if belt driven) mechanism, but no bias or automatic calibration? I am Confucius. Very odd, considering the front panel still has plenty of space for said controls. Also, cassette decks scare the Hell out of me. Have you worked on any of Sony's DAT decks? My friend had an original ES DAT machine with loading issues. Had a good look inside there and decided nope, way above my knowledge and experience level. Not getting in there. Tascam somehow made easier to work on mechanisms. I will give Borgouis & Odd their due, their gear, even if always belt driven, was also built to be serviced. They did make decent quality units, though still way overpriced for what is actually in there. Some of their 90s CD and Cassette systems had those motorised sliding silver metal doors which make me nervous in case something jams. Shame none of their top loader CD players had digital outputs. Yes I've been traumatised by discs getting stuck inside. I've watched repairs on Bose CD changers. "The horror. The horror." Just nope.
I've not but secretly I've always fancied a dat deck. But to be honest I won't use it, the same as the minidisks I've had. It would be a pretty novelty though..
If it's mechanism fed for the loading system it could be a belt.
I agree. The three head feature usually for me is to get the recording how you want, on the fly.
And yes, I'm usually a shy creature 😅
@@pwrestorationYou really would be OK with a Tascam deck. They were also rebranded as Fostex, even Pioneer used a version of theirs. Also their portable DAT is a good one. In any case the standard sized decks have buttery smooth mechanisms, you'd like them. And they're serviceable.
I think it sounded ...Abey...normal.
Abey?
Ive been a tape head since 1981 you've destroyed it.... wow and flutter..its a mess,...
Yep. Totally destroyed 😅
Not very technologically advanced cassette player.Only eye cathing thing is loading mechanism.
Nice looking deck but strange no calibration
Calibration on VHS, you understand nothing ? belts, muhahahahaha
the tape has digital timing , meant that ?
Why can't people clean the equipment, prior to record de video? Seriously, it's not that hard to pull a rag in few seconds and dust of before shooting macro video.
I'm sure anyone watching this videos does not need to see that to believe stuff are real and old.
Otherwise nice diveins into obsolete gear.
Cheers
I love a good bit of dust
NOT ONE PERSON AT SONY HAS A BRITISH ACCENT. ITS IN THE HIRING GUIDELINES.
It's like in Hunt for Red October. It's all in your 💥imagination💥
