My wife and I were looking at a used Toyota RAV4. I brought along a couple of CDs to test the CD player in the infotainment center. I found it would not recognize one of the discs, both commercial DCs and both play in other players. When we brought it up in negotiations, the dealers attitude was, "Nobody listens to CDs anymore. They do Bluetooth off of their phone or they do satellite." We ended up not buying the car. I checked with a couple of car audio shops and was told that not recognizing some CDs is a sign that the laser is getting weak and ready to fail.

Great video. My first CD player was a Technics of similar age, and I loved it very much. I love the way you film your work. Entertaining and educational.
I was lucky enough to get the SL-PS740A model off facebook for really cheap because of sound issues, turned out to be just a cracked solder joint on the right audio jack, so nice easy fix, even came with the remote and he dropped it off for free aswel
That's why I edit the vid while I'm recording it - lol -. I record a section at a time and throw it in the editor, and that way if something is wrong it's still setup to re-record it - lol -.
I still have one of these and the RS313 tape deck that we used to transfer CDs to tape with. Tape deck is a bit wonky making noises these days and CD player still works. Will try to sort it out some day, but got other components to used in the mean time.
The rail voltage you measured, which was a bit low, should have read higher anyway with no load when you removed the ribbon cable. And you are right that if a motor is stiff ,it will draw more current, due the the now low very low resistance
As soon as you showed the motor frozen, I was talking to my screen and telling you to lube it. Then again when you got it to spin somewhat and making a screeching sound. A couple of micro drops of fine lube will to do it.
Awesome video. Can't believe something so simple in the end was the cause of the failure. On a side note, my brother is enjoying the C64C. Has brought back many memories and creating new ones with his daughter playing some of those oldies we all played and loved :)
Very helpful video! I have the hifi tower of my parents on my soon. The CD Player Technics SL-PS740A shows the same sympthoms. And .. your T-Shirt is a hammer. I love it!
Just got a PG300 version (non "E" so no digital out 😢) but the main spindle motor is seized/crunchy)... I don't think a drop of oil will fix this one! Thanks for the video!
Nice fix! I always loved the Technics CD players. I have owned one since the 80s. I have the SL-PG300 model sitting on my desk at work currently, paired with a Technics SA-R377 receiver for that glorious 80s/90s vacuum fluorescent displays they have and the warm nice sound. It has been used here for many years. I am looking forward to seeing you do the optical mod as the US version 300 does not have it.
Nice, yeah it looks like only European players got the optical out. The mod should be pretty straightforward but we'll see. I might also look at adding the remote control function to the 100 just for fun
Nice repair! I have a 100A, same as yours minus the red jack on the back. It plays pretty much anything except the odd pc burnt rw. Used to have the matching tape deck with the synch input wish I kept it....
I checked the cd player and the motor that moves the lens is functional. Instead, the motor that spins the disc does not work. I can't tell if it's burnt or if it's a power supply problem. The device was not turned on for a long time.
Great Video. So nice to see units such as this saved. I have an even earlier Technics CD, the SL-P777 which is still working fine some 34 years after I bought it new. Admittedly it did need a service once when the tray seized up but apart from that has given excellent service. Sadly though it never reliably read CD-R discs from new. Curiously it always read the TOC but then just hunted on CD-Rs only very occasionally finding the tracks.
Maybe I need to burn an audio cd and give it a proper test. I'm all out of blank CDs so I'll need to buy some, something I haven't done for around 20 years
Good demonstration, Mark, but it looks like I skip some steps to replace it back as I battle to align the cd tray properly, and when I get it the disk is not spinning.
Lol, I found the same model in the trash last week and it works! Someone also left a megamix CD from the 90s inside 🤣
happy 4 u, good thig owner didn't check eBay lol

Can't beat the '90s technics separates
Dry bearing shenanigans. Nice save Mark.
Love these Technics CD players. I made good use of the synchro edit function back in the day, maximising my tape copies. Maximum nostalgia 😊
Funny how we went from this to random, program play and seek if you're lucky

These are the kind of repairs that I like, with a in depth search of the point of failure and, no just "replace the full mechanism".

There are youtube clips about a plastic cog in the tape deck that strips. I’ve just ordered 2 cogs off ebay for $8 Aus to fix mine.

Best repair video of youtube. Thank you for teaching us how to repair.
I always loved the Auto Cue function on Technics CD players for playing a radio or mobile DJ as I could not afford the Denon DN-2500F😀

Endless thanks for this video, you're a star! Mine was not used for 25 years and had the exact same issue. It working perfectly now!
Thanks for the video! Have the exact same model with the same problem, playing perfectly now.

About to try this repair on a SL-PG300 (which does not have digital out BTW, just stereo RCA and 'synchro edit'). Nice to see an Aussie for once ;-)

Good video. What did you clean the tray mech with and what did you relube it with?? Thanks!
Technics SL-Z1000 Dac + SH-X1000 Transport from 89/90 was top of the line back then for sound. Look them up.
Thanks! Hope that my CD player has the same issue. The symptoms are exactly the same.

@endomusicprojects does the motor spin freely when you turn it by hand?
You should be able to power it from a AA or AAA battery
@@TheRetroChannel The motor rotates easily by hand, but is dead when powered.
@endomusicprojects Ouch. That could be a challenge finding a replacement, I wish you luck

Yeah sounds like something is not aligned properly. There's a link to the service manual in the video description that may help reassemble it
Excellent video. Great work. Got me some tips for a technichs not spinning.
Great fix. What kind of oil is that?
Hi
What grease do you use to lube the cogs and rails on your cd drive ?
I have a Nakamichi CD player that will start to skip about track 13-14? I have a Technics SL-P555 that works flawless.
Buena reparación amigo, mientras la MAIN BOARD no este dañada, siempre se podrán reparar los reproductores de CD 😁👏👏👍
I have an SL-PG 420A Great cd player
genial! puse andar el mio que tenia años sin sonar rock! gracias

Need to get them too

MG chemicals white lithium grease and synthetic clock oil

what kind of lubricant on the plastic gear of the tray?
I used MG Chemicals white lithium grease
6:26: Easy to determine. Just look at the underside of the tray you just removed.
Kids anno 2024 must be so confused watching this video. :)
no actually my cd player has been broken for a long time and I just bought a cd from a show and I need to fix it lmao
I am hella confused, my player was broken for like 10 years
Very nice..thank you..
Stopping Take On Me before the "bliiiing" sound? 😢
Since you were looking for signs of life, maybe you should have played Duran Duran 😃
Seemed like a later model, all functionality on one chip.
Perhaps the spindle motor would like a drop of oil too? 🍼
Yeah, I was so excited that it actually worked I totally forgot about the noisy spindle motor.
What happened to your finger?
I attempted to cut it off with some power tools and failed miserably
