Unlikely Spot at de Trobriand Bay #RippingLipsAdventures
With the National Walleye Tour in town just days away, I wanted to see if a few hogs could be found in a place few if any of the field would ever consider stopping. The forecast for wind this day was 30+ mph and the heat was slated at 100 for a high. This unlikely spot was definitely one of the few places I’d even be able to consider with my tin can. Curious where I caught the big one and what color it was used? Watch and learn. You’re going to love it!

Jig-Rap PB Pre Fishing ND Gov Cup

With the North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup looming just days away, I had to see what was west of Garrison Bay today. Douglas Bay is not always accessible to my smaller craft when the wind is blowing out of the west over 15 mph. The slight breeze afforded me the opportunity to venture out and try my luck. I would guess if you have a closed end it would be better. I just used sealant/marine grade glue in each hole, also. Got my rivets at Menards. Aluminum rivets were all I used. The ones at Traxtech looked the same from what I could tell online. No regrets yet.

      I’d probably be out there myself, but we didn’t make the cut this year. A friend of mine who’s been in the Cup for a dozen or more years in a row, didn’t get the official postmark on the response from the post office the day he dropped it off. We got put on the waiting list, which means no go for us. If I do fish, I wouldn’t worry about space considering the fish are more scattered this year than I’ve ever seen in seven years. I’ve also heard that pre fishing a tournament there is never the same as the day of. It’s going to be a hot one out there. You might have to jump in for relief.

      The only thing that I’d be able to get in there would be a top water bait. It was a solid growth of 5 foot weeds with giant leaves up to 6 inches below the surface. It was pretty gnarly. If you have a different bait that works for walleye in junk like that, I’m game. Outside the weeds, it was ok, but there wasn’t much area without them. How do you like the new Kalin’s landing net? Have you been happy with the handle length? Any issues with getting hooks caught in the net?

    • @rippinglipsadventures
      @rippinglipsadventures Месяц назад

      It’s ok. I have had hooks caught on it or even random objects in the boat snag it very easily. The biggest draw for me has been how light it is and that it can be set to any length and jammed in between the side walls of my boat on the back deck for worry-free transport and storage. If you go to Brett Bloemendaal’s video ruclips.net/video/Y-DIw0sm3i0/видео.htmlsi=GmubYGyVnZ9ZKxWP and see at the 15:00 mark his got snagged hard on the windshield. That sort of thing happens a lot. I’ve never had that happen before in my lifetime with my other nets. There have been times on my boat I had to really work to get it untangled from my live pole or some random object like a rod holder. Again, that never happened to me in the past. Hooks aren’t a big deal, but they have definitely gotten stuck. I’m also on my second net already and have seen both Brett’s and my own handles break. Kalin’s did send me another net without question other than showing them pictures of the foam crack. The other thing I don’t really like is that twine loop at the handle as it will get stuck on things, too. All that said, it works if you can avoid those snags in the boat. It’s light. Adjustability is infinite, which is what I wanted for storage.

    Also how do you get livescope on a helix 9 can you put LS on any helix. Or how does that work

    • @rippinglipsadventures
      @rippinglipsadventures Месяц назад

      Mega Live transducers work on Helix 9 side imaging units. I bought the Ice Shuttle kit by Humminbird and just leave it in the shuttle all year long. It does work on G3N and G4N units I am pretty sure. Again, as long as they have side imaging capabilities. It might even be possible to use units smaller than the Helix 9, too. I’m not entirely sure about that, though.

    What do you look for when your searching for walleye in sakawea this time of year like points shallow points rocky or…?

    • @rippinglipsadventures
      @rippinglipsadventures Месяц назад

      Normally, work shallow, rocky points and humps and warmer water temps compared to other spots. This year has been anything except normal, however. I feel like I’m relearning finding walleye at all anymore. The usually cold spring has sent the fish scattered all over from 2 feet to 40 feet. I’ve found nice walleye in 2 feet with cranks and 40 feet with jigs. It’s a little odd this year.

      Endangered species I guess. Shasta crayfish numbers went down to around 500 for a while and they are trying to revive the population I think. You cannot take and eat or do anything with them there. It's a really beautiful area. Good luck if you go fishing.
