Shaping and glassing my own board has been my dream since the first year of my surfing journey. Finally - ..."like a herd of turtles" it took me 15+ years to finally shape my first surfboard. This page is me documenting my learning process and a fun creative outlet.
start to finish: 6'0 twin fin egg with channels
Here's another fun build I recently did. Made a custom outline with a couple of templates and made a straighter railed egg shape. I also added a dyed fiberglass inlay and it turned out pretty good!

Car camping, Korean BBQ, and 3 Days of Surfing

Road trippin from portland to Canada's PNW (ucluelet/tofino) with some stops. Today I documented some of the things I love doing while I'm not shaping surfboards and editing videos. Did some not-so-stealth camping in my 4-runner, pumping on my penny board, and ferry rides to Vancouver Island for some surf. Lastly, made some yummy pork belly Korean bbq in the back of my 4runner. 10% OFF SHAPING ...

Glassing in a Leash Loop on a Surfboard

This was kind of hard to watch because I knew immediately as I was watching the footage that I had mixed up some steps. This is my second go at glassing in a leash loop. The learning curve with every aspect of building a surfboard seems to be high! Hopefully this was informative and people will share their knowledge in the comments below on how to do this better and more efficiently. Thanks in ...

Fiberglass the inside of the mold for more consistent shape and make a pour hole at one end. Pour the foam into mold when it’s vertical
Amazing‼️
@@passartko thank you 🙏🏽
Beautiful board
@@francomunoz229 thank you 🙏🏽
This board would be sick as a quad amazing work man keep it up
Funny you should say that! I originally planned on doing a quad and the pencil markings are still there (and can be seen under the glassing 😅). Maybe on the next one!
I saw his video and this mold of fiberglass looks good, ruclips.net/video/K1eqfklRENA/видео.htmlsi=9j8kTk1jl3pF72rt
🤦omg! So much for you to learn. But enjoy the journey! I was there too. That said, just remember this..."If You're Green You'll Ripen. If you're Ripe, You'll rot"! Never Give Up!!!
Haha yeah still learning and still enjoying the process! Making your own surfboard is no joke! The amount of hours and material!
very nice
Thank you 🙏🏽
Nice Board and tunes🤙🏽🤙🏽
Thank you coach nate 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Nice work thanks ❤
Thank you 🙏🏽
yes please
Amazing work. Back in 1963 the few surfers in NY had balsa boards. Then, at age 12, I bought a mail order "make your own surfboard kit" (shipped from Cali) for $40. It included a blank, 10 oz cloth, a can of resin and 4 pages of instructions. Tooling a surfboard is equivalent to Prometheus bringing fire from the Gods to the earth.
Haha thank you sir 🙏🏽 That’s crazy you were able to mail order a surfboard kit back in the day! That’s also a very cool life story. Have you been building since? Yeah tooling a surfboard IS tough work!
If at first you don't succeed....great perseverance there man. You'll get there.
Thank you 🙏🏽
Nice
Lookin' good! You've come a long way in the last 6 months.
Thank you 🙏🏽 I appreciate it 🍻
Would love one of these !
It’s up for sale if you’re in the PDX area 😬🍻

@@paulzeye_surfboards right now it’s terrible! 😂 gets better in September.
@DGT73 sounds similar to here 😆 We get random good days here and there though
Nice work bro. Why don't you install the fins plug before the lamination?
Thanks Victor 🙏🏽 I added it after the lam because I added a tint to my resin and I wanted the Finbox to show. This is a lighter tint so I could’ve added them before the lam. It’s an aesthetic choice 🎨
Aren’t futures installed under the glass?
You can install them before or after the lam. Usually before if you’re not adding any color to the resin (especially darker colors). I think it’s more of a preference thing aesthetically. Functionally i don’t think it matters.
pound some chopsticks or toothpicks to fill the holes. dip them in some wood glue to make them solid.
That’s actually not a bad idea! Or even use sawdust with wood glue! Thanks 🙏🏽 🍻
Love that sky blue. I do the leash plug the same way with a guide and a Forstner bit. 🤙🏼
Thank you! I use a hole saw but have been thinking about moving over to a forstner bit at some point. Forstner bit turn out pretty clean and even?
@@paulzeye_surfboards yes and you don’t have to pry it out and risk damage.
@@allsurf awesome! Thanks for sharing that! I know that’s what kazuma uses too. Will have to make the switch at some point.
@@paulzeye_surfboards Welcome. I didn’t know he uses that. Thought I was alone. 😂
@allsurf he uses a lot of different tools but I have seen him use a forstner bit on a plunge router!
Nice little vid bro you're a heck of a craftsman. Loved the way this was shot and edited too, props to whoever did all that, whether it was you the shaper or someone else. Aloha 🤙
Thank you very much 🙏🏽 One man team over here in front and behind the camera 🎥😬 I really appreciate the kind words! Very encouraging for sure - cheers! 🍻
Which blank did you start out with? Nat rocker?
I believe it was a 6’2 blank and I added a bit more rocker to it on the tail and nose. Not by much. I can’t remember the amount off the top of my head!
That board looks awesome!!! Also it was super fun surfing with you out at Agate beach a couple weeks ago. Look forward to seeing out in the water again soon!
👋🏽 Hey Grant! Thanks! It was super fun out there at agate! It was also a blast to see you catch all those outside sets in that cool mini “gun” you shaped. Hope to see you out there too! 🍻
Beautiful work man thanks!!!
Thank you 🙏🏽
love the channel hope it blows up big
Thank you Rodger! I really appreciate it and thank you for your support 🎉 🙏🏽
What’s the story of the green mini Simmons back there?
That was a board I made from foam that I casted in a surfboard blank mold I made (it’s in another video). Added a cedar stringer and cedar glassed in fins! Haven’t taken it out yet, but thinking about it this weekend!
Nice and efficient.
Oh yeah! 🍻
🤙🤙🤙
HOW MUCH 4 DIS
I think I paid $150 for this and a starter kit of other shaping supplies. Probably worth $20 in 2x4s, $20 for the bucket/concrete, and $10 worth of wood screws? The foam is probably another $5-10?
YAASSS!!! Thanks so much man, simple, efficient and practical. Awesome. I've just moved house and looking to improve my setup so this was perfect 🙏🙏🙏
CHYEWWW! You're welcome! It's been perfect for my setup thus far. Hopefully, it works well for you too! Cheers! 🍻

Thanks Dave!
Would love to see the design for your shaping rack I saw in another vid you slot shaping or glassing tops onto the base, looks so simple and functional for a one space shaper..
Hey! Yeah I can do a quick video on it! I know you inquired about it previously (?). I currently have been trying to modify it so it’s a little different than before. I have some complaints about it too, which I will put in the video too!
@@paulzeye_surfboards yeah I probably did comment before too ! It looks rad haha a quick vid would be epic , will keep my eye out ! 😁
Nice job man! Shaping a board is one thing but glassing can be a whole other beast. Keep up the good work!! Looks like a great board.
Thank you 🙏🏽 Glassing is definitely a whole other beast! So many steps involved (just like shaping) and so easy to screw up. Still learning to perfect the process (if that’s even possible 🤷🏻♂️)!
Amazing work! You did great!
Thank you 🙏🏽
Simple, authentic and really cool video to watch!!! Keep going! 🤙🏾🤙🏾 🇫🇷
Thank you! Will do! I really it 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Drift wood from the beach makes really good sanding blocks and it’s soft enough that eventually your fingers and palms prints will indent it leaving you with custom grip to hold it in 🤙 🤙 nice little run through
That’s so cool! I feel like I’ve seen those on some RUclips videos and just figure that’s from 40 years of shaping. I’m assuming that’s more for contour shaping? Unless you can add a flat surround it using a planer or jointer? Either way - super cool information 😎
@@paulzeye_surfboards I had an old shaper years ago swing by my work and sell me some planers and what not. All of his blocks were drift wood. He'd run them through a thicknesser to get one side nice and flat for sanding and then just left the natural sides natural. His hand prints were so deeply embedded into them, they fit him like a glove! Granted, he's probably shaped thousands of board in his life so I imagine it took quite a while!
@@smallkinedings there’s plenty of that around the beaches I surf at! I’m going to pick some up the next time and have a go with it. Thanks for the cool tip 🍻
If you go to the tool rental of Home Depot they have big sheets of peel and stick sandpaper at really low grits. I cut a 24" piece from a 2x3 and stuck a piece of that sandpaper to it and it works REALLY good.
Wow I had no idea that was a thing! Thanks for sharing that. Will have to give that a go at some point. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
@@paulzeye_surfboards Yep. It is sandpaper that is made to be used with hardwood floor sanders. It's pretty cheap, too. They have big sheets of the sanding screens, too.
@@garyh4458 this is amazing intel
Nice try.
Very nice!
Thank you for this helpfull video
You’re welcome! I’m glad to hear it was helpful 🤙🏽
Very Nice board ! 👌👌 Is this the egg B template from blending curves ? Your last shortboard is sick as well ! Thank you very much 👍
Thank you 🙏🏽 I believe it was the egg B but I pulled in the tail a bit and maybe even the nose? I’ll have to watch back to remember. My memory is not very good 😅
If I only had some skill.
Have you had a crack at it already? If so, def don’t judge your skill after one go - especially if you’re learning by yourself! Though I do get that it’s pretty pricey to make mistakes.
At 72 and living in the armpit of America (Memphis), my surfing and board making prospects look dim. But I love the work you do, and I watch 15' barge wakes on the Mississippi River, measured them with my boat. Granite barges.
