Cutting over Lamination: (Did you spot the sparks?)
Просмотров 410Месяц назад
Installing finboxes is one of the scariest parts (for me) in shaping a surfboard. There are hundreds of steps to pump out a surfable board. Cutting in the finboxes after the lamination makes it scarier because you're literally cutting through little strands of glass that have cured. This process actually causes sparks!

It was such a cool experience! Not sure if I’ll ever get to experience that again.
Like that design on the board!
@@JimmyxMelanie thanks! It was a new technique for me and it turned out pretty nice.
👍
i got a couple tips for yah first go with the rope wrap it around the pencil pen whatever you use then lay the pencil down so its a nice tight loop around the cylinder then second loop do the way you did it the glass cloth patches are a great touch to keep it flattish this way you get less butt crack that you try to fill with hot coat but it dont work good also ive bought the rope material at any hardware store but way cheaper than buying online surf oriented stuff its a furnace seal and its woven so you have to unwind it but its enough to last a long time sometimes it has black carbon in it which is annoying cuz it turns out black but hey its a feature hahaha
Oh cool! This is hard for me to imagine what you’re describing. Do you mean wrap it tightly around the pen with resin on it already? Then lay another layer down the rope like I did over the wrapped loop? Also when you say less “butt crack” do you mean under the loop where the rope is lying against the board? The roving I bought was around $25 for 3100ft! I think that’s a really good deal!
holy cow thats a great deal absolutely!!! that is indeed what i mean by butt crack so for the first go down if you yes wet out the rope first then wrap it once all the wayaround the pencilthen put it down and do as you did it helps to keep the hole more circular
@ I’ll have to keep that in mind the next time I try it! How many strands do you usually use of fiberglass?
the amount of strands depends on the size board and loop im trying to make! i would say that i typically eyeball it and dont count strands its like making spaghetti hahaha ive also heard of people just pulling strands from thick "volan" glass cloth for the same purpose of leash loops and glass on fillets
@ so there’s no industry standard for amount of strands (phew). The bigger the board, the thicker the loop then? That’s good to know. I haven’t used volan glass yet, but maybe here in the not so distant future 🤷🏻♂️
Great video! We don't make our loops that big here in Hawaii. You can get away with a much smaller leash loop, and then if your foot happens to hit it on take-off or coming off the lip, it won't be big enough to get in the way. Still a good job!
Thank you! When you say “smaller leash loop”, do you mean less wide, less roving, or both? I was trying to make it smaller but the roving didn’t want to lay any flatter or closer to the pen! I’m hoping to sand it down smaller and see if that’ll do the trick! 😅
@@paul_s-eo How can I send you a photo? We used to use 'fiberglass rope,' but Fiberglass Hawaii no longer stocks it. Most 'laminators here use 6oz cloth and take out strands to make any size loop they desire. I
@ if you have Instagram you can send it to me on “Paulzeye surfboards”
Use a small candlestick instead of a pen. Slide out with a couple taps and wax can be shaped to contour the loop.
Awesome! I’ll have to try that on the next leash loop! Thanks for the tip 🍻

hey brotha! great work here looks like you got your boxes checked what two part foam you using?
Thank you! I'm using two part PU foam rated at 3#s from www.uscomposites.com/foam.html cheers!
No direct contact with the board once it's shaped. Use a barrier to move it, gloves on when cutting laps and sanding laps. Minimal compressed air blowing. And if I do it, I make sure to wipe with a cloth several passes and do the tape trick. Also, keeping the stomping around the shop to a minimum. I glass with epoxy and it's such a sensitive little flower. If you even say the words "dust" or " fish" or "eye" the hot coat will hear you and give forth these things. Boards are looking good, bro. And your page is real nice. Real chill.
Hahaha! Thanks for all the tips and the compliment! I really need to take seriously to not touch the board as often as I do without a barrier 😅 I’m trying to figure out how the pros get such a good sand and polish!
I’m sorry, I hate mushrooms, but I’ll support this video 😂

The pattern looks eerie like the alien's hand from movie Arrival (2016)
Haha it does kind of look like that, doesn’t it?
The resin work and abstract colors and patterns look great!!!!
Thank you! Just went for it and this is how it turned out 😬
this is sick i know its not easy im making a board of my own but you do make it look easy how do you avoid airbubbles when laminating
Hey thanks! In general you want to make sure there’s full saturated of the fiberglass. If you have any gouges in the foam make sure you fill it or enough resin goes over it to fill it. There is also a filler you can apply before laminating, but I haven’t had great experience with it so I avoid that now. There’s also a comment below where he gave a top about cutting the fiberglass and dabbing it with resin! That also works well for futures fin box installation! Good luck!
Nice work Paul!
Thank you! How’s the fly fishing going?

Thank you 🙏🏽
the final board looks so fun!!
I wish I could say it surfed as fun as it looks! Unfortunately, I learned a lesson not to upturn the rails - makes it really hard to engage the rails during turns! 🥲
Do you not need to thin out the paint for a foam stain? I heard the paint being too thick can cause resin-foam bond issues. Curious because I’m planning on doing the squeegee pull on this board.
I actually thinned out a paint on a different board and that faded to almost nothing from being in the sun on the roof rack for a couple of trips! I didn’t have any issues with the bonding for this one. I would just make sure the paint is fully dried and no spots that are caked on there before glassing!
@@paul_s-eo good to know, thanks! 🤙🏽
Is the process pretty much the same using epoxy? I’m gonna be glassing my first board in the coming months.
Yes, I would say pretty similar! I don’t think epoxy has a uv version, but there are different speeds at which the resin goes off! I recommend using the slow kick for the first go around! Cheers and good luck!
What's the temp. On those waters?
@@Surfmus I’d say it’s around 50-55F at any given time of the year 🙂↕️
I made one similar but single fin. 6, 3 x 21, 1/4" 2 , 15/16. What I hate is that I don't take out as much. Within 2 years I have only ridden it 6 times. Every time I take it, the waves have to be 3' and up in order to enjoy the ride. But once on the wave it is a smooth ride.
@@Surfmus in in the same bus! I’ve taken it out 2x and it wasn’t in good surf! I’m going to have to take it out again soon! I hope it rides a bit better on a flatter but 4-5’ day!
Hi Mate! I'm no expert by any means, but I only use q-cell to seal my boards because it's the same material as the resin and glass, just in a different form, which almost guarantees a good bond. I couldn't believe people were using things like joint compound or spak filler when I first heard it, because it's kinda chalky and soft, especially if watered down, and you don't want anything chalky or powdery as a base for any kind of resin coating. It's akin to not cleaning the dust off a car after sanding it for painting. The paint ain't gonna stick. I've seen super bad delaminations on boards "sealed" with joint compound/spak fillers. None of my boards have ever delaminated, and I don't use vent plugs, and have multiple boards in my car on hot days constantly. The rule of thumb for me is "use like materials on like materials". It's the same on automotive paint. I don't sand em too smooth either. Often 120 to 240 grit. There's plenty of "tooth" for the resin to grab onto that way. I'm interested to know if anyone has a method for stabilising the joint compound/spak filler though.
Really??? That’s good to know. I was told that’s how you seal the blank before glassing an especially if it’s looking rough in places! I’ve seen big board companies doing that on RUclips and also my blank supplier recommended it (especially for eps)! I wonder if there’s a different compound that big board companies used especially formulated for surfboards 🤔 Thank you for your insight!
Noice!
Very noice 😆
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! You’re welcome
Nice. But never touch the fiber cloth barehanded. Finger oils are detrimental for the lamination/resin.
Use a clean brush, and also on the channels the brush makes it easier to set the cloth perfectly without wrinkles. How is the board riding?
Thank you! I will try to remember that on the next one!
Nice! I will try the brush next time on channels! I haven’t been out on it on a good day yet! The last time it was really fun! Goes to bottom really nicely!
Use a UV resistant clear coat if you are heading this route. Otherwise, hot coat/gloss coat, sand it to a preferred finish and there you go.
Seems like a lot of work to do a double hot coat for a pin stripe, right? Can I do the pin stripe over the lamination using good tape?
@@paul_s-eo No, The tape can't penetrate the cloth, therefore it will bleed. In the video I didn't realized it was just clear coat over just the pin stripes. I thought you clear coated the whole board to avoid a gloss coat.
Yes I did just clear coat the stripe! Do you think if o let it gel a little longer before applying it would not run as much? I feel like I’ve seen do a decently clean pin line on the lamination. I’m also not to particular on perfection and if there’s a little bleed here and there I wouldn’t mind it!
@@paul_s-eo You will always see the square tiny bleed on the cloth because there is no tape that can penetrate it and make a fine line/curve. Remember the old video game with the low "bits" resolutions, the graphics look all square. That is how it's gonna look. Krylon UV is sold at Michael's and is the best clear coat I have used.
