I interviewed for my current federal position back in June 2023. After all the paperwork, background investigation, negotiations, and general government bureaucracy, I didn't start my job until Jan 2024! It's crazy how slowly the federal government hiring process works. Also yes to carefully reviewing the FJO! They tried to pull a fast one and have my salary and grade match my TJO instead of the much higher grade and salary I negotiated, and they agreed to. I pointed that out immediately, and it took them 2 full days to send me the correct FJO. Pay attention to everything folks!

For the Leave groups, what if you have active duty time with a dd214 but you are still in the reserves, does reserve time count towards leave group?

Thank you for this! I was referred 3 days after applying for a Info Tech role. I have experience and education and DOD qualifying certs but I didn’t submit a gov resume just a basic 2 page one. I wish I had bc now I may not get an interview bc of it. I plan to do it tonight and reapply for all the other roles still open! How long does it usually take to get an interview after referral?
It was direct hire so maybe they have better needs
Usually when people get referred they are called for interview in a week or 2.
Direct hire would likely show a need but opens the pool to the most candidates.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 I’ll report back if I do get one. Thank you 🙏🏾
on the TJO is this the base salary or the locality salary?
Should be both but usually at the step 1.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 The GS number on the TJO does not match the salary of the locality. I am wondering if HR made a mistake. This is why I asked the previous question… Is the TJO the base pay w/o added locality pay? Will the FJO include the locality pay? I am thinking about calling HR to ask this question. Thoughts or Suggestions?
@@federalhiringadvice1385 doing the SF 86 today in sections. Thanks for your channel. I pray everything goes well for me.
Hi thank you for the video. I apologize if I missed where you answered this question. I just accepted a TJO and was offered a recruitment incentive. Am I able to negotiate the contract length? They want 2 years and I would rather have 1 year.
You're welcome! You can always ask for a shorter service period and they may accept. If not you can ask for biweekly payments and that way it doesn't really lock you in. With biweekly payments if you leave early you don't have to pay anything back you just don't get anymore payments.
Is prior military service considered "employment by the Federal Govt" regarding section 18?
Since you include your military time at the top of the form section 18 would just be federal civilian service.
So we send the request for negotiation to HR first and then to the hiring manager only if HR declines the negotiation request first? Correct? I just emailed you for a template of the email to send for negotiation of salary by the way. Thanks a million sir!
That is correct! I've been having issues with my kasey@federalhiringadvice.com email so you can try federalhiringadvice1@gmail.com for now. My web servicer is working on my other email issue.
Oh ok. Thanks for the quick reply. Will do!
Just resent my email to your new email address.
I'm currently leaving one fed agency for another, and I accepted the TJO and then gave notice. I'm not concerned about my BI since I already completed my 5-year reinvestigation last year with zero issues, and it sounds like they're probably going to honor reciprocity (no new BI). Regardless, do you still think I should've waited to get my firm/final offer before giving notice? I can't envision any reason things would fall apart, but maybe there's something I hadn't considered?
When you are transferring from one agency to another there is not really a need to give notice. The losing and gaining HR offices work together with the managers to negotiate a transfer date. Then you transfer without a break in service.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 I suppose that's true...I just didn't want my boss to be blindsided by my decision. My team is already short staffed, and by losing me everyone's workload is going to be much worse, so I decided to prepare my boss. They even gave me a counter offer and tried to get senior management to convince me to stay, but I declined.
Hi! I sent you some dough through your website as your site requested for help and negotiation template, but my email to you got kicked back as undeliverable. Please at least send template. Would have wanted additional coaching on the process, but I am sure you are super busy. I look forward to your help.
Weird! I got a consult payment and emailed back yesterday. I'll send a different email this morning and see if that works.
@@federalhiringadvice1385please send the template and we go from there. Thank you in advance!
If I already fall into the 3-15 years service bracket due to military service, should I still negotiate my industry experience to be included? Supposing I have 9 years of military service and 3 years of industry experience, would that mean I could potentially move to the over 15 years leave bracket sooner, after 3 years in this example?
If you already have 15 years of military service there wouldn't be a need to negotiate more. If you need private sector experience included then you'd have to negotiate. Only military time for non-retirees is automatically counted.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 Well I don't have enough military service nor private sector service combined to hit fifteen years. I was wondering if getting private sector 3 years added to the military 9 years is beneficial even though it doesn't hit the 15 year mark. My reasoning is that after being hired I will reach the 15 year mark sooner if the private sector is included. Not sure it works that way though.
Thank you for all the information you share, much appreciated. Also, I just received your your book! I’m a current fed employee and just received a TJO for a promotion within same agency but different department. I will need to negotiate my start date because scheduled for surgery to be of work out 4-6 weeks. Do you have any advice how to discuss with HR? Already been approved for FMLA and Leave Donations. Can this cause my FJO to be rescinded?
You're welcome! Thank you for your support! When you move internally usually the gaining and losing supervisors negotiate a transfer date. Should be no problem to ask for a specific start date. I'd just tell them like you did here that you have a surgery coming up and want a certain date.
In the VA does the Firm Job Offer need to be signed by the director of the VA Medical Center where hired?
The firm offer is issued by HR through USA STAFFING just like the tentative offer. The MCD may need to approve first but doesn't actually sign the letter.
What about “pending retrieval”?
That's a new one. Has the announcement already closed?
@@federalhiringadvice1385 yes, it was a short window of opportunity from the 18th-24th. I applied on the 19th. I’ve been watching your videos and I’m now implementing your advise. I did not tailor my resume for the specific role I just applied to, so I have a very strong feeling I will miss that boat. But - now I’m aware I should tailor different resumes for different job series per your advise which I will definitely be doing from now on. Even though this resume was not particularly tailored to fit the role I do hope there’s still a glimmer of a chance. Thank you for all your expertise & advise for us federal job seekers!

Thank you!
If your agency gives you a promotion grade increase, do you have to start from step 1 or you keep the same step in that grade?
They do the 2 step promotion rule. Move you up 2 steps at your current grade and see where that falls on the new grade.
Thank you for sharing this process. It was very valuable & informative. Wishing you continued growth & success.
You're very welcome!!
Received my tjo on the 14th of June completed all the tasks except background check( waiting on nbis emails) what’s the normal turnaround?
Depending on the position it could take 2-6 weeks or longer to complete all the requirements.
Fyi retired military not meeting exempting criteria (medical, etc) can still request credit like civilians with non-fed experience (in the same type of work). Google: “Fact Sheet: Creditable Service for Annual Leave Accrual for Non-Federal Work Experience and Experience in the Uniformed Service.” This is discretionary as opposed to combat service time which is mandated credit per statute.
Hello. Thanks for sharing. How would 2 years of unfiled taxes affect me? They are in process of being filed. Thanks again
You're welcome! You would just need to explain on your 306 and EAPP. If you are working to clear it up it shouldn't be an issue.
What happens if I just estimated my time at a job which was only like 4-6 months after I got out the army. Will this hurt my background check
It could. The investigators are going to contact that employer to verify.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 thank you. I also quit a job when they tried to stop me from using FMLA. I’m a disabled veteran at 90. It wasn’t termination or me being fired. I essentially quit bc mentally it bothered me. I didn’t put in two weeks notice. I just called out until my last day. I didn’t put this on my of-306. Thiss job is a prosthetics clerk job. No security clearance. Will this pop up as a red flag. If so, will they contact me to discuss the situation? I’ve read a lot of conflicting info regarding this. Some say investigators contact them to discuss it. Some say nothing happened and got the job.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 just got my tjo. I didn’t talk about my previous job where I had to use FMLA for my appts and left bc they didn’t approve my FMLA. I still get a pension from them. Will they rescind my offer? I got the job bc of my veterans preference.
In regard to negotiating your leave group... what if you're medically retired from active duty but served over 20 years? Can my time in service be used to determine my leave group or do I fall under the standard military retiree rule?
If it's a true medical retirement and is documented on the DD214 you should be able to include it. Have to discuss with HR.
It says so on my DD214. Thank you! 😊
All of my communication have been by email and no drug test. I have my firm offer and start date.
Awesome!
I just had my offer rescinded due to not passing the physical security check to get on the base. I'm so clueless as to why, I was in the military for 8 years and have never been in trouble.
That's strange. You'll want to ask for specifics and if they won't provide you may need to file a FOIA request with the privacy officer.

I accepted a firm offer but due to a hiring freeze the start date is months out. I have a possibility of another position within the same agency before that. Can I accept two firm offers and cancel the first , or will the agency hold that against me?
You can accept multiple offers and decline the one you don't want anytime.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 thank you! Your video is extremely helpful!
How long does the IRS make you wait before being able to reapply?
After having an offer rescinded it shouldn't be long. There's not an established wait between reapplying unless it was something really serious.
Very good information and beneficial. Thanks for all that you do. I am very appreciative.
You're very welcome!
Going on 6 months for then to finally finish my background This is unacceptable ..
IK...IT'S REALLY INSANE! SMH
Hate to hear that!
Thank you so much for the information. This is really helpful. I have 2 days to fill out this form and the recruiter has not answer my question relating to the signing part.
What was your question? There are 2 signature lines on the 306. 1 you sign before as the applicant. The 2nd you sign in orientation as the appointee.
If I received a TJO months ago and accepted that from an agency and am still in final steps of that hiring process but recently applied to another location at the same agency and received another TJO am I able to accept both TJOs? I’m worried it will kick me out of the application process if the one I’m almost complete with
You can accept multiple TJOs since all announcements are independent.
I'm a GS-6 step 3 interviewing for an internship that hires between GS5-7 with a target of GS-11. If hired, will I have to drop to a GS-5 and ask for a step increase to match my current salary, or can I request to be hired as a GS-6 step 3, or even GS-7 to account for the salary difference? I'm not greedy, but I surely don't want a pay decrease.
It just depends on what grade you qualify for. If you only qualify for the 5 and you don't have a break in service they should automatically match your pay by adjusting your step.
@@federalhiringadvice1385 I received an email that said I was passed to the hiring manager, and it showed that I was eligible for GS5, 6, and 7 based on my responses to the questionnaire. I interviewed last Monday, and provided references when they called me back Tuesday after the interview. I was told I'd hear something this week but nothing yet. The job announcement says you must be willing to start NLT June 16, so they should be hiring soon. I just don't want to sound out of line if I ask to be hired as a 7 or a 6 step 3. Thanks for the reply.
Great content, unnecessary and annoying background music. Please remove the music. Thank you!

Would you be able to make a video discussing jobs with education requirements? The specific question I have is if a job has an education requirement for so many semester hours in a particular field, can experience ever substitute for some of those hours?
I'll see what I can do. Basically it depends on the job. If there is a minimum education requirement that is firm. Also some jobs allow education to substitute for experience.
Thank you!
@@ginaconnelly708 you're welcome!
Hello I did an interview and got asked to give my SF-50 and pay stub is this a good sign?
I think anytime they reach out after an interview it's a good sign.
Hey! When getting an civilian award, do you always get some sort of incentive or could it just be a certificate?
Awards could be cash, certificate, time off, etc. Just depends on what the supervisor submits.
Is it too nuts to ask for a a step 5? I have an MBA and 6+ years of direct experience in the role I was offered the tjo for. I was thinking year for year or would be step 5 if I were the in feds. My experience is other government occupations (local) and I have a letter from my former manager discussing my qualifications and experience. Is that enough?
Step 5 isn't too much. If you have the superior qualifications I'd say go for it.
