Loyal to the Foil.
As I'm living in Berlin there are not too many opportunities to have fun on the water. We don't have proper Wind, Windbumps or swell at all which makes the lakes kind of boring compared to the Ocean. However there are still a bunch of Boat Wakes and a few "windy" days each week making the lake a pretty good playground for all different things Foiling.
This channel represents my interests in all different Foiling Disciplines and tries to show what I'm up to and what I'm testing. I hope you find it useful!

GONG Veloce HDW S + 77 HM v3 Mast | First run on a 750 sqcm Foil
Just had my first proper run on the brand-new GONG Veloce HDW S, and I’m already loving it! It paddles up easier than I expected, especially for such a small foil at 750 sqcm. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, I had an absolute blast. I’m still getting used to overtaking smaller wind bumps to stay with the faster-moving energy, but I caught a glimpse of how amazing it feels when everything aligns. Staying in the energy with such an efficient foil is a total game-changer compared to what I’ve used before. I can’t wait for more of this fast-paced downwinding!
The V3 setup is incredible! The connection is a massive improvement. The 77 Mast is longer than the AXIS UHM 80 and has way more...

Downwind Foiling a small Lake? Works better then expected!
I've assumed that this would not be possible, but the 05.02.2024 proved me wrong when a storm came over Germany and provided us with 19 to 38 knots of wind during the day, creating enough wind swell to downwind after as little as 1,5 km of fetch(distance, the wind has to push the water), enabling us to be around 5 km on foil. This opens up so many different lakes around the globe, as there are ...

And all of them are surrounded by breathtaking nature, green grass, mountains and cows. This makes for scenic looks while surfing and very versatile ...

Even dough it looked unsurfable, we had such a blast in these tiny 1 foot waves. Watch Maileen and me score some "Set-Waves" in Salinas, a Spot in Asturias well suited for Prone Foiling as its usually not to steep and mellow. SUP DW Foiling Leviathan 1350 - New Board with more Volume - tuning the Setup (shims)

I've had a few sessions now on the Leviathan 1350 and come to love it for what it offers. Still, I'm not sure if this Foil is well suited for what I'm currently using it for. That being said, It's super easy to paddle it up making Sessions (in light wind) fun and comfortable as there is simply a guarantee that I'll be up on Foil for most of the run. Do you know whether the gong mast is compatible with Lift wings?
How much wind was it and how big are the bumps? I´m getting into dw on Gotland(also in the Baltic sea), there is no one else here doing it and im a bit confused with the conditions, how much wind and size of bumps do i need? Great video!
Amazing story and experience! What would you recommend for equipment for a beginner weighting 90kg? Also do you think dock starting practice would be useful before going for prone surfing?
Hi Leon, what mast length would you recommend to start with, I have 82 cm from windsurfing does that make sense?
Is it possible to stay up just by paddling?
I love how youre trying to link white waters 😀Keep going youre doing way better than me!
You mentioned an adapter to connect axxis planes to Gong mast. Could you elaborate on this ?
Awesome that you posted and shared your experience. But...beginners please do NOT try to learn near regular surfers! We are all ambassadors of this new sport and when you scare other people or god forbid hit someone because you are out of control you become the potential reason why prone surfing gets banned from surf beaches.
How much this v3 mast + fuselage weighs?
Why did you decide to go for the Alu fuselage?
im 80kg, im thinking about getting the veloce DWD M, do you think its a good size? im a beginner to intermediate DW foiler !! when I use the 1201 I have a hard time controlling the foil because of the span, that's why im considering getting the DWD m instead of the L! how is the stall speed? i can flat water start the 1201 art pro, do you think the M is comparable? also, have you tried the veloce H? thanks
How much do you weigh ?
86 kg :)
Nice, I’m 95 kg on Cruzader 7´0 xl and I struggle taking off on the Véloce HDW 1050
@@TheGrostotom 95 kg is a lot more than 86 and, and my Board with almost 8 is way longer than yours at 7! What Foils where you just to before? I'll order the 1050 as well!
CurveH 3XL 🤣 big step down
@@TheGrostotom Oh boy thats a huge huge huge step down :D Takes some time to paddle up smaller things! I had the Veloce XLH before, which was similar in volume but bigger in surface, so I already had experience to paddle that up...
I'm on axis gear. Can you tell me where I can get an adapter for gong foils? :) Thanks
try a konrad front foil LX
So what would you rather prefer for these waves - higher top speed allowing chasing the waves or lower stall speed allowing lower speed?
I'm not sure honestly. I think for this day again I would prefer the higher top speed and less drag when being relatively fast. However if it would be a tiny bit smaller I would needed a bigger foil i think. Its a hard compromise. But i really want to get used to the smaller front wings, I think with choosing the right line it can be easier to ride something small as its simply fast enough to stay in the energy...
Sorry man, your English sounds crazy
Would you prefer German? :D

Klingt superloose😅
Hi Léo, i would like to do a road-trip in this area (i live in bask country). Which beaches and places would you recommend ? What's the recommended size of the swell ? Thanks a lot
Thanks for the video. One question. When you did the flat water start with the veloce HDW M, which stab did you use?
Thanks for the comment :) I used it on the veloce v3 M stab. Seems like a very good combo. However when I'm ordering the HDW L soon, I will keep on using the Veloce v3 S Stab on it
@@leo-stief thank you very much for the answer 🥳

Yeew, finally some review again from one of the best german foilers out there. ;)

wwweeeeehhh :)
finally was schnelles :))
Nice review! What do you mean by balancing issue? Do you find it easier to balance on a longer mast? Because i own a HM86 and HM72 for pumping the Sirus XXL and i find the 72cm much easier to balance 🤷 happy flying!
He means the state when you are still on the water with the board. With narrow DW Boards the foil provides the main stability that is necessary to balance the board. The further the foil is away from the Board, the more stable it feels. In flatwater it does not matter that much, but with waves from different directions, backwash and currents forming it does get quite challenging.
@patrickheider completely true!
@@patrickheider thx for the claification for a non-super :)
@@leo-stief 72 mast? 82 mast? Which one will help? Is it 82 mast?
great to see you back posting video. Can`t wait for more content. Are you using Gong, Axis and Sabfoil alltogether now?
Thanks mate! There will be more soon, had a lot to do recently but there is slowly more time again :) I'm using the AXIS 1201 a lot recently and now I'm transitioning all to Gong I think. The new Veloce HDW is exactly what i wanted so i will order it in the bigger sizes as well and then se my AXIS 1201 probably to be all on GONG :D I still love the Leviathan but I sold it as i did not use it once this year. I'm allways paddling nowadays, no more pumping...
@@leo-stief thank you for the update. sounds interesting. Do you think that the Veloce HDW also work for pumping/dockstarting?
I have indeed wondered if it possible to pump in chop...
With the rigth size of foil it works like a charm :)
This is great thank you! I was looking for info like this because all I have is Lake Texoma and I was wandering if it was possible
You're very welcome :) Just wait for strong wind and you should be good to go!
what front wing size would you recommend? i got a gong curve MT 1150cm2 but think it might be a bit small.
Depending on the waves, your weigth and surf/ foil skills. the Curve Mt is not a bad choice! Has plenty of lift for its size, pumps relatively easy and is easy to steer. I used the Curve XLH a fair bit and it was nice for the first few sessions but at a certain point it was simply to lifty for takeoffs when waves where bigger than 2 foot. Now I'm using a below 1000 and it comes up more then eraly enough most of the time.I would recommend to get used to one setup to really get comfy on it. Let me know about conditions, weigth and skill, then meaybe i can give you a clearer recommendation, however I'm also not a pro Surf Foiler, so my advice is probably biased and other will advice differently :)
@@leo-stief thanks for the reply! I really love your content Leo! So more info: Weight: 70kg Skill: surfing since many years (intermediate level I would say). Surf foiling I have 7 or 8 sessions. I can get up and fly for a couple of seconds often I fall off quickly but sometimes I manage to ride it until I lose speed and touch the water again. I can’t pump at all yet. I was thinking of getting a front wing with more surface area because I guess then it’s easier to pump? I’m looking at the gong xover but that only has either L 1300 (probably not much difference to my current 1150) or XL 1650cm2 which feels like it might be too much? Hmm but yeah I would love to surf foil on days with very very small waves so maybe 1650cm2 mounted at the back of the board is okey for that. I’m also excited about the new gong NOTW and Scura. I’m on a 5.0” lance now and catching small small waves is difficult. I think with a 6,8” NOTW and xl xover I would be able to catch very small stuff the question is: is it easier or harder to learn pumping on these bigger longer boards. Do you have experience with that?
In actually parked just a few minutes away from aviles salinas where u surfed in the other video from you :)
@@FabiodeSaldanha Thanks Fabio, i love that people like the stuff i put up haha! Okay based on your weigth and surf skill I would first of all say, trust the process! After 8 Sessions I could not do shit, and I could pump perfectly in flat water before. I think it took me like 20 Sessions or so to be able to pump out of the wave and to ride a bit more consistent. And they were 20 long long sessions. The real break through for me came later on when I had another 4 weeks in mellow conditions with small waves. So my latest Surf Foil Video is basically me after consistent 2 months of a session everyday... It really takes time to get good... For the Equipment: I would suggest to stay in the L range of Foils with Gong, the XL will probably be to lifty for 70kg, making the take of way harder when it lifts before you pop up. A bigger Front wing does defenitely make your life easier for pumping! But Surface Area is not everything, and it comes with a huge downgrade in speed and controllability in the wave. My Advice would be to go for something like the Curve H in L. Its big enough to pump good, yet still turny and not too lifty for takeoffs. Generally High Aspect Foils Pump better. In the beginning its a bit weird to get used to them, but once you are, they are simply more fun in the surf as they can keep up a certain speed and don't require much power to pump. I'm very confident in saying that you can pump the Curve H L longer in the surf than the X-Over XL, as the X Over is way more draggy. And its important to have low drag in the wave and to keep the speed up in order to get out of the wave efficiently. The X Over XL migth get up to speed, but as sonn as your not in the perfect spot anymore it will slow down immediatly, requiring energy to keep up, whilst a High Aspect Foil will most likely just glide on. I hope this helps with the Foil Choice! I would not recommend to go too High Aspect, for example I love the new Veloce HDW now (have the s 750 sqcm) but without proper proper pump technique the thing is a nightmare to get used to... With proper technique it's simply beautiful as all the drag is gone. For the board: smaller board is easier to pump! Yet, bigger board is way easier to get going. I prefer easier to get going over better pump still to be able to surf ultra micro waves. Your current size is perfect I would say! good compromise between long efficient to paddle and not too long to make it too hard to pump. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions! :)
@@FabiodeSaldanha Awesome! Its truly the perfect spot for learning there!!!! Wish I was there rigth now haha

nice insights! which fuselage are you using?
It was not mine so I'm not sure but I think it was the red crazy short :)
Hi Leo, nice that you're posting again. In previous videos, you were using the Sabfoil Leviathan 1350 as your big DW foil. Based on your reviews, I got one and have been using it for flatwater paddle-ups but have yet to do a downwinder with it. Do you think it would work OK in conditions like in this video?
Hey man, thanks! There will be more content soon :) I would have preferred the Leviathan 1350 for this day, but didn't have it with me at the time being. It would work fantastically! I'm now at a point where I usually don't use it for downwinders any more, as the AXIS 1201 is my new ligth wind wing, but I would choose the Leviathan 1350 anytime again to learn the paddle up and to get the first experiences downwinding. It's definitely too slow to keep up with good wind swell, but getting up is more important than being fast in the beginning!
@@leo-stief Thanks, good info! I also have the new Sabfoil 1260 coming, which should be faster once I get more experience.
@@DeadriseFoilboards Uhhh let me know how it goes please :D I wanted to test it since they announced it but no one here ordered it yet...

Thanks man! :) There will be more content soon, had a lot to do recently but will have some time to edit everything from the past half year or so very soon :D
Thanks for posting 'Real Life' conditions for a lot of us. If the wind was more South at that location what minimum wind speed (kts) would you attempt a Downwinder there?
Yeah its not all Maui conditions :D Good question! As the wind is always very very gusty here, probably on a day thats like 16 kn base to 30 kn gusts or so. From Winging on days with max of 25 kn gusts with perfect direction south west wind, I unfortunately already know that its not enough to fly free when gusts don't exceed 25 kn. So I'll try again once it reaches the 30 kn Treshold I think :)
Very Nice! You have to try Templiner See, Potsdam. It is often very windy there. I am also foiling there :)
I've been winging the Templiner See already! Its a nice spot as well :)
@@leo-stief Great! I am pump foiling at the Rudergesellschaft dock mostly tuesdays, fridays and saturdays. Sometimes also on Sundays. Maybe we can meet up. i would love to get some feedback from you. You inspired me to start with foiling :)
Very cool !! I am starting also small downwinders on lakes in Belgium but using a foil assist to take off and going back. I noticed I need at least a good steady 20 knots but higher will be better I think as I am heavy. Saw a Vampire board last week in France with a cool dude from Bavaria gliding like hell on waves with an Axis foil!
Nice, how much fetch does your lake have? Steady 20 kn sounds reasonable, here 20 kn ground wind mostly means 35 in the gusts so basically exactly like in the video's conditions. Yeah the Vampire Boards are sick, light and sturdy! How long can you go when always taking the foil assist upwind as well?
5 km with a dam at the end. I did not measure yet but upwind is indeed eating the battery
I was wondering the same thing! Would you take a closer look at this lake which is next to my "home spot": maps.app.goo.gl/ejgokA3FVU4Z6EXz7 Would it be possible in strong south westerly wind to wing upwind, deflate and then downwind in a north east direction? Also: which foil would you say worked better - the 1300 or the 1401? I have both and would also choose the 1300 due to the lower stall speed..
interesting
This is great information! It gives me great hope to try this in the bay. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks, glad the information can help, have fun in the bay! :)
Hallo Leo!
I was about to buy the gong X-over L but then saw this video you are using a XL? Is L too small for pumping? Im 70kg surfed a lot and want to get into foiling now. What cm2 surface area do you recommend? I was also looking at the curve....
