What is a nature journal? What is nature journaling? Two very different questions that are well worth some time. It might seem obvious, but it's important to ask ourselves these sorts of questions when starting a new activity. What do I want to create and what do I want to gain from the process of creating? In this video, I go over the history of nature journaling, previous published definition...

October Nature Journaling Walk - Fungi Spotting Tips
It’s so inspiring and refreshing to see honesty like this. This is the type of youtube i really miss, just normal people sharing what they do and like, not popularity and pushing items to buy in your face. Thank you😊
I completely agree. I think I want to be making the kind of RUclips videos that I like to watch myself, the ones I got inspired by in the first place. Am much more excited about doing this again now 😃
Welcome back, I kept checking for you, glad you have sorted out a few things. I like the walks through the forests and beaches and fields, the sketches and inspiration. I could care less what kind of water brush you use. Those people who want to know what color paint or type of paper you use, drive me nuts. The paint won't make you a better artist, the drawing practice and observation of nature is what makes you better. Get out and enjoy the world. I'm so happy to see you, looking forward to more content what ever it may be.
Thanks, Amy, nice to see you here again. I do enjoy talking about art materials etc with those who are interested - and I find that the better materials you can use (especially in terms of paper choice), the better the results regardless of skill level. But I am just not interested enough to make my channel about this. I started up intending to do vlogs about my nature journaling life but not having the video skills to do it how I wanted to. Now I think I can have a better go at it 😊
I’m so happy that you’re staying true to yourself. I really enjoy seeing your authentic journey
Thank you so much! 😊
Welcome back! I'm excited to see when new things are in store. 😊🙏
Thank you 😀 Next video should be out December 8th 😊
This is wonderful. I think that’s incredibly common to lose the target over time. I know I was going out to just draw and paint, and eventually lost my drive. I tried over again and again but in the end I released that I was missing the main reason I started it all. Just to be in nature. Thank you for all your beautiful content
Thanks Marc, I am glad you enjoyed it. I am happy to hear that you came to the realisation that it is all about being ourselves in nature and responding in some way 😊
This feels more authentic Alex. Go for it x
Thanks, it definitely is. I'm doing the things I enjoy, like setting nature clips to music and showing art process. Excited about video making again 😊
I'm here to follow any journey!
So appreciated, thank you 😊
Alex- good for you redefining your channel closer to your heart. “ Courage my love.” ( who said that?)
Thank you 🙂
Hi Alex! We missed you, it's great to have you back on the channel. I totally understand you, support your authenticity, your plans and look forward to your videos when you are ready and feel like sharing a bit of your creative journey. So, no pressure please and take good care of yourself! Regards and wishes for all best things from 🇺🇦
Thank you, it's good to be back! I am hoping to be more organised next year so I can be less pressured and get videos out in a more relaxed way. Thanks for your lovely comment 🙂
I wonder, if you could afford 5 or 6 more pencils than the 12 set, which ones of your expanded palette would you choose to buy? And thank you so much for showing your truly amazing swatch book!
Good question! I think the most important are 0200 Sun Yellow, 0850 Violet, 1600 Leaf Green, 1730 Oak, 2200 Ink Black but it does depend on what you work on. For plants, Iron Green and Spring Green would be my next choices after that. For more landscapes, I would select another blue and a sepia. Thanks for commenting 😊
Hi Alex, I would still watch but you went off the boil, moving somewhere else. I hope your new reboot gets back on RUclips...
Hi, I didn't move anywhere else as such, I just ran out of enthusiasm and time over the summer 😊 Back here now though! 😃
Alex! You’re back! 😊 What a lovely video this is. I feel like I’m listening to a friend. This is a beautiful kind of video; for me yes, I do prefer this to brush comparisons and things like that. This is a beautiful kind, thoughtful, peaceful and inspiring video which makes me want to recommit myself to going outside and drawing, just as the last leaves are falling here and it seems like it could snow any day. Thanks for this and I applaud your decision! I hope it brings you peace and health in the new year as well!
Comments like this keep me sooo motivated. Inspiring others to go outside and create is exactly what I'm here for. Thank you 😊🥰
@@AlexBoonArt❤
Your words really resonated with me. As a RUclipsr it’s easy to put pressure on yourself to perform and be all too interested in what people want and watch. I want to stay authentic and remember why I started my channel in the first place. Thank you Alex, so happy to see you back. 🙏💜
I'm glad it made you think too, it's so much easier to keep making videos when it's what you really want to be doing. I think it helps reach the right people for you too. Keep going 😊
@@AlexBoonArt Thanks Alex - sound advice 🙏☺
I'm not a utuber but Alex what you bring is yourself and that's what I missed not the newness just saying you bring your authentic self and your compassion to everything 💯 authentic looking forward to seeing you again and all to bring on utube ❤😊
Thank you so much for your comment 😊 I really appreciate it that you appreciate authenticity as well. The channels that I love here are the ones where people are being honestly themselves and sharing something special to them. I take a lot of inspiration from those people, and hope to do the same here 🙂
Bravo for doing what is more authentically you! You may lose some followers, but the ones who stay (and the new ones you get) will appreciate whatever you present because it will be more in line with their interests, too. Thank you!
Thank you! And yeah, that's OK, because there's no point in them staying if they don't like this style of video. I'm good with it 😁
Might be nice if not everyone on RUclips was flogging something from China 🤔
Definitely not planning to do that 🤣😅
Delighted to see you back. I think this new direction sounds really exciting and I’m looking forward to watching it play out. It sounds just like the sort of thing I enjoy.
Thank you, glad to hear that 😀
I’m rebooting in 2025 too
Good luck! 😀
I fully support your new direction. Too often we turn our hobbies into burden. I have to keep reminding myself of that when I’m out in my yard
Thank you, and you're right there! 😄
Hi Alex from Florida, U.S. I enjoyed your sections in the Nature Conference and look forward to all your videos you put out here on this channel! 😊
Thanks for watching 😀
Lovely video, Alex. I really enjoyed this one. I have so much respect for you when it comes to making the videos that you most enjoy rather than what the numbers say. Wishing you all the best 😊
Thanks very much, Sarah 😊
Good to see you back again Alex and looking forward to the newly rebooted channel! A very important reminder to all of us who create on RUclips to remember why we are here!
Thank you 😃 Yes, I definitely recommend a check from time to time. I had gotten so into what I felt I should be doing, it took me a good while to realise I wasn't enjoying it 😅
Hi Alex! It's nice to see you again. 🤗Your painting is beautiful. I look forward to your RUclips videos again. Personally, I simply enjoy hearing you talk about Nature and seeing the process of creating your journal pages. I probably don't even notice the camera work details that you do! I hope you are doing well. I'd love to see your garden and your cat, if you still have one! 🌸🐈⬛🪴
Hi Cynthia! Thank you 😃 Fancy not noticing all that hard work editing 🤣 Oh well, I won't hold it against you 😉 More garden and cat - check 😁✔️
I like your new stile and I´m looking forward to your next videos! I found, that video making has its own learning process. I wish you all the best to find your way and have a lot of fun and healing! I´d like to hear how you compose your pages.
Thank you! Great topic, I'll think about how to describe it 🤔🙂
Hope you enjoy taking a look at this new style of video - do leave me a comment to let me know you're still around and watching. And I'd love to know what sort of things you'd like to see next.
I would rather not call them mistakes but different effects. For the next artist it might be exactly what makes the work interesting instead of "having it done right".
And looking at your results I would say that I definitely would not call the last shell better than the others, but YOU are the artist and you decide what works best for your work. I hope you understand where I wanna go with this ;-0
Yeah, I just called it that to catch the algorithm and try and get clicks, you're right. But don't worry, I'm not making this type of content any more and pivoting my channel back to my comfort zone of vlogging. So you won't see this kind of thing from me again anyway 🙂
I carry peanuts. It's my offering.
Great idea 🙂
Thank you so much. Absolutely beautiful. Inspiring.
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed it 🙂
I want to make one so bad but I'm always at home, and my home country isn't rich with nature neither animals or plants , I'm thinking about drawing from pictures or documentary series , any advice sir? 😢
Honestly, I think you might be surprised. Rather than using pictures or documentaries from elsewhere, at least to start, look around outside where you are. Everything counts - weeds in the pavements, lichens on the walls, birds passing overhead, trees, cloud shapes... give that a try for a bit, and maybe supplement from elsewhere later if you want to. Hope that helps 😊
@@AlexBoonArtI will try to do this . thank you so much for your time ❤️
I'm in the USA and I love Inktense Pencils and pans and I am glad to have found your channel 🎉 again 🎉 I need a link to the exact Fatbook you use. I've found on the website that it says medium texture and a few bars down, Rough 😢 I have the rough paper and I want the smoothest they offer. Thanks for your help ❤
www.khadi.com/shop/fat-book-21x21cm/ This is the one, it's not very smooth texture, but I like the rough texture for this purpose. This is a smooth version, fewer pages but thicker paper www.khadi.com/shop/block-book-bb5-smooth/ Hope that helps!
still checking on you, how did your map exhibit go?
Hi Amy, have had an extremely busy summer, no time to make videos! But I will be doing some soon, including a final update on the map project. Thanks for checking in 😊
Hi 👋 I am just learning Inktense pencils and I love khadi Rag. Is that a smooth paper you have or the rough,? I have the rough. Thank you. I'd like a smooth khadi book. Great progress and I've enjoyed looking at your work 🎉
This one is the Khadi Papers fat book, I just added a hard binding to it. It is rough paper, I prefer it for this application (though prefer smooth for botanicals, though in that case I use hot-press watercolour rather than Khadi). Hope that helps 😊
Okay. Another artist said she had the smooth one 😅 I'll ask her about that 😉
You can get a smooth "block book", but it doesnt have as many pages as the fat book I believe.
As an extremely proud Momma of two LGBT+ kids I thank you for your bravery and service to the community. I wish you nothing but blessings on your journey. ❤
Thank you for your kindness 😊
I really like your definition
Thanks 😊
So many things to say! 1) I love your voice, its so innocent and calming. 2)We have Gorse here in Hawaii and it is invasive but its nice to know that I can use it for something. Hawaii is the invasive capital of the US I think. 3) I completely agree with you that there is something fulfilling about painting a plant with the plant itself lol I'm working on doing this with a plant called Purple Heart here, also invasive I think. Its native to the Gulf of Mexico. You should search it up though, it really is a beautiful plant. It was my last natural journal entry.
Thanks for your comment - gorse is a native plant here but glad to give you some ideas for a use for it! We don't have Purple Heart but it looks interesting, apparently you can buy it here as a houseplant 😄 looks like it would make a good pigment. Thanks again for commenting 😊
This is so helpful! I just bought Inktense pencils to use on fabric, think I will practice on paper as you have done. Thank you! I am happy to be a new subscriber!
Glad it was helpful, thanks for your comment 😊
You have no idea how important this video is. Nature helped me heal from my past traumas. You are adorable and Iʻm so glad that this is who you are. Your kindheartedness is something we all need more of in our lives. I love seeing how dedicated you are to this and I love that you were able to take this on as a career path of sorts. I am working in that direction now as a primary school garden teacher. Your artwork is stunning and so raw/real. You are absolutely inspiring others with your work. Keep spreading your wisdom and positivity. Thank you so much for this!
Thanks for such a beautiful kind comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and it touched something in you 🙂 Best of luck with your teaching career 😃
Love your journal - well done!
Thanks 🙂
Thank you for sharing your expertise. You are very knowledgeable technically and your painting/drawings look beautiful.
Thank you 🙂
You must be quite wealthy. Good for you but what colours do you reccomend for those on a limited income?
Haha, I wish! I got my big box from a grant after winning an art bursary 😅 There's another video on my channel that breaks down a recommended 12 and 24 set. You can also find a list in the recommended materials part of my website alexboonart.com . Hope that helps!
Rude. Who are you to judge someone for pursuing their hobbies?
Great videos showing your changing up of mediums, very helpful. THANKS
Glad it was helpful 🙂
I think you are a wonderful human being, period. I, a straight woman as straight as one can be, could not care less about people's sexual orientation. I have some friends who are homosexual and I just like them because of their being. I can explain why transphobia and homophobia have skyrocketed. It is because this "thing" is being pushed upon everybody SO aggressively by politics and media, and parents get pissed off by these themes being pushed upon their little ones in school in a very unhealthy and sick way. What do sexgames have lost in school with kids who can bearly understand the alphabet? If one is not comfortable in one's body it is going to show up at a certain age, I have no doubt about that at all, and I think that anybody in their right mind can figure out that this must be extremely confusing and depressing and of course, help is needed in any way the person concerned is asking for. But, we should not allow greedy doctors to "help" people transition while they are still much too young to understand the consequences. I have seen this happen to a friends' teenage girl who wanted to transition and is now, 4 years later, a physical and emotional wreck who needs to be watched 24/7 because she became suicidal. What is so bad about waiting a couple of years longer?? These young people are damaged for the rest of their lives, it is criminal! My homosexual friends also say that the pushing of this topic is getting on their nerves and they experience comments now that they have never ever experienced before. They could walk hand in hand on the streets and be perfectly fine, nowadays they do not feel comfortable anymore doing that, thanks to politics 😞 Why cannot we go back to normal times and just see people's value as they are? Why do we even care about what preferences others have in life? If we are approached in a way we do not like (I was once by a lesbian woman) we can express our disaproval and let the person be in peace and respect their honour, right? Love and light to everybody!
Hi there, I wasn't sure how I felt about leaving this comment here, but I think I'll let it stand. There's a few things in here that are misinformation, but it is not my job to educate people in this field, I recommend you check out the excellent educational trans youtuber @jammidodger to help you understand things like transitioning younger in life, regret rates for trans people (1%, less than ANY other medical procedure) and this strange idea that doctors are greedy. The fact that detransitioners exist doesn't mean that people who are genuinely trans don't deserve to get healthcare. Being trans is not a sex game and has nothing to do with my sexual orientation. It is just something I am. I also have another medical condition that relates to hormonal development, and I see it the same way as that. I had the wrong puberty for who I am, the doctors helped me to have a second puberty and now I am able to function and do the things I wanted to do in my life. If it wasn't for those doctors, I wouldn't be able to make RUclips videos, or function in public life at all. I owe those people who helped me, in our NHS, my life. Without them, I wouldn't be able to do this job, it really is as simple as that.
Just beautiful! I started Nature Journaling about 6 years ago, and it fills me with peace to be outside with nature. Ah, the birds! Thank you for this inspiring video. I look forward to viewing your other videos and to keep journaling myself! Just an amatuer, who's still learning to draw. I recently retired mostly from a teaching career and so am looking forward to being outside beyond the summer months.
Amazing, thanks for a lovely comment. Best of luck with learning to draw and your nature journaling 😀
WOW your journal is so lovely
Thanks 🙂
I would of never guessed that you are a woman/genetic female/born a female/transman/XX. When you say that your body will always be trans, do you mean that your body will always be female because you are a female who transitioned to a transman?
Thank you.🏴☠️
hello Alex, I am inspired! Started painting and such about six months ago, mainly for healing reasons. I wonder if you can expand on what is your "freelance career", is it still on environmental science? I am a biologist trying to finish a phd and am considering not continue in academia, but also don't know freelancing options where biologist are paid for doing something. If you don't mind sharing, I would truly appreciate some feedback.
Hi - sure, I was a freelance editor of scientific papers, usually before peer review. I made sure the English was good and the content made sense, outside of a specific specialism. I studied environmental science to PhD level so was able to edit a fairly broad range of natural science papers. I still do some occasionally. Hope you find a job that suits you 🙂
Firstly I would love to thank you for sharing your journey. I have been a keen sketcher since I can remember as a child and fan of Disney that inspired me, then Bob Ross, and several others along the way. I moved to Dorset 9.5 years ago and have gone out with my Nikon each time, also been getting that nudge one gets to become a sketcher outside, Nature is something I love and even with photos with my camera it has shown me something I am keen to start learning more and connecting with nature. Journaling out sound like I can do even more so love your channel and as I have been overthinking my kit you have shown me I don't need so much as what I first thought. Now I am kit ready to get started for 2025 but also to experience some of the remaining days of this year. Thank you for all the information here on your channel and for being honest enough to share your journey and the benefits it gives to you.
Hi Rhonda, thank you for your lovely comment. It is really easy to overthink kit, I used to do it, but definitely had the best results in terms of mental stillness, and truly observing subjects in the moment, when I was out with just journal and a pencil. I hope you will be able to give it a try and see how it works for you. Thanks for stopping by my channel 😊
Beautiful work! New sub here😊
Thanks and welcome 😊
