Montblanc 144G fountain pen restoration
In this video I restore a Montblanc 144G from the 1950s. The nib was bent, the cap lip was torn and the mechanism no longer moved.
Disassembly and thorough cleaning were urgently needed.
I repaired the cap and fitted the fountain pen with a new sealing cork.
Have fun watching.

In this video I introduce a tool that I use for almost every fountain pen restoration I do. A tool to unscrew the nib unit. You can use the following tool sizes for the listed Montblanc models. The prerequisite is, of course, that the mounting slots are available and correctly positioned. Models size 2: 132 ; 142 ; 242 ; 252 ; 342 ; 042 ; 642 ; 742 Models size 4: 134 ; 144 ; 244 ; 252 ; 344 ; 6...
Montblanc 132 fountain pen restoration
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.Год назад
In this video I am restoring a Montblanc 132 with a very unusual barrel. This is in my opinion a prototype, so the MB 132 certainly never went into mass production. The cork had to be renewed, otherwise the condition was quite good. Only the typical oxide layer I had to remove from the hard rubber parts, so that the Montblanc typical dark black appears again. Production between 1939 - 1945 (est...

Congratulations
Ich bin so richtig platt! Deine Arbeitsweise ist ja sensationell! Danke, dass wir über deine Schulter gucken durften! ;^)
Neat
Absolutely beautiful
Thanks!
Good job as always Marco
Thank you James!
144 Is my dream to own one day
I also really like the 144G from the 50s. Unfortunately, the 144 is no longer available as a piston filler.
@@MSPens I hope to find a vintage for sale.
Amazing job🔥
Thank you!
Dueling paintbrushes 😂😂😂❤
Absolutely beautiful restoration
Thanks a lot!
Sehr gut wieder zum Leben erweckt !
Das ist der Job!!
Hello, do you have any video showing how to properly install cap in mb 121 or something similar? this type inlcudes a spring inside the cap and 2 different elements and I really don't know how to put it together to have "click" ...I can send you photo with all these parts...Thank you
Hi, can you send me a message via my homepage? Then I can certainly help you.
@@MSPens Thank you. I will do that but...I see there's no option to attach an image...
Nice visuals, but you would engage people much more of you spoke!
Impressionante! Um gênio! Uma arte! Belíssimo trabalho!
Огромное уважение! Приятно смотреть, как очередная ручка встает в строй)
Is this an old shop sample tester pen?
Great video
Bonjour dommage ne vous ne donnez aucun non des produits utilisés. Merci
I don't want to discourage people but please do not take risk working on vintage especially celluloid pens, the guy is so skilled, you don't want to see bubbles popping up after glue use. Besides that, nobody should experience a crack sound while disassembly of such vintage beauty.
Yes, you're right, you have to know exactly what you're doing with antique celluloid writing instruments. The sound of such an antique masterpiece breaking will haunt you for a long time. 🥲
Why bother? Expensive pen, I Sent mine for ink-flow issues to Mont Blanc authorized service dealer in 1979. They removed the brand new cap, which was part of my pen, replaced it with a damaged, worked out cap. On top of that they insisted I should pay for service, which was supposed to be done under warranty. Mont Blanc makes expensive garbage. I switched to Lamy Safari 12 to 18 DM at the time, about $9...still working perfectly.
Great video! I really enjoyed watching it.
I subscribed
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Impressive work, thanks for showing it to us. May I ask what type of adhesive you used to repair the cracked cap lip?
Hi, it's a mixture of celluloid (from defective fountain pen parts) and acetone.
remarkable
Many thanks Marco for your video. Where can I buy these tool kit? Thanks
Hi, thanks for your comment. You can find the link to my homepage on my RUclips profile. There are some tools for Montblanc restoration available.
Extremely beautiful work and craftsmanship. 👍 Great
Thanks!
You just cost me 25 grand polly
One or two more questions: what polishing paste do you use? and are these official tools or in-house tools?
I cannot name the manufacturer of the polishing paste. In any case, it is a very fine one for the very last polish. I made the tools myself, but most of them are modeled on the tools used by Montblanc.
Very impressive craftsmanship and results
Thank you!
Nice fix, how much did you charge for all that?
Hello, I carried out this repair for myself. Otherwise, such a repair costs between €100 and €200 on average. Depending on what needs to be done.
What is a good maintenance routine for a pen like this? I just got a Montblanc 254 and am wondering what’s the best way to clean it and what intervals I should be cleaning it in between uses. If you could give any advice I would greatly appreciate it
Hi, so if you always leave the ink out of the fountain pen and rinse it with clear water when you know it will not be used for a long time, further maintenance intervals are not really necessary. Only if the old ink has become hard and encrusted should you disassemble the fountain pen to clean all the individual parts properly. The easiest way to do this is in an ultrasonic bath. The seal should also not break if you do not let the ink harden in the fountain pen. So, simply draw water into the fountain pen from time to time (distilled water would be best here) and rinse thoroughly.
@@MSPens This is all great info, and I will definitely keep it in mind. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply.
What kind of sandpaper and what kind of wheel on the dremmel? Also did the dremmel wheel have a polish?
I use 2000-3000 grit sandpaper and on the Dremel I use a soft polishing attachment with a firm polishing compound.
love the knockout block
Me too 😄
So well done, I learned a lot especially repairing the chipped piece. Question: what grit was the blue-backed sandpaper? Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the comment. The blue sandpaper I used on the cap piece was 1500 grit paper. I just wanted to remove any glue residue and slightly roughen the surface.
İ want buy this pen for 300$ give me contact
Would love to see this with a voice-over
Thank you. This is not planned at the moment. I am not a native English speaker. A voiceover like that would cost me far too much work. Maybe sometime in the future.
Really awesome work! just wondering how did you re-tightened those cap ring bands?
Hi, I do this carefully with collets.
@@MSPens it's a very common problem on vintage Montblanc caps (celluloid).. did you make the ring smaller or actually enlarge the cap? it's really amazing to know that those caps a saveable!
Impressive. It seems that you are using only one wet/dry paper before poishing. What is your preferred grit for this?
In this case I used 2000 and 2500 grit sandpaper. Depending on the fountain pen, I also start with 1000 grit sandpaper and go up to 3000 grit. It depends on the part to be worked on.
@@MSPens Thank you. It's the same as I use myself. I go up to 7000, but then again, I do the polishing by hand.
Sanding up to a 7000 grit is also a very good way to get rid of any small micro scratches. I also have 5000 and 7000 grit sandpaper, but have rarely used it.
What a beautiful work of art and craftsmanship 🥰
Thank you very much. 😀
@@MSPens thank YOU these restauration videos are Gold 😁
@@Individuell83 that gives me plenty of motivation for the next video. Thank you.
Unbelievable work, very impressive! What kind of glue did you use for the broken cap lip? Thank you!
Hello, thank you for the nice comment. I use a mixture of celluloid and acetone to close the crack. Unfortunately, simple glue does not work.
@@MSPens I see, Thank you very much, I'm still baffled by the quality work you do! 🙂
@@MSPens Do you make it yourself, or is it something you buy?
@@watster Hi, I made it myself. Simply dissolve a few celluloid parts that cannot be repaired in acetone. Wait a little and add acetone until the desired consistency is reached.
@@MSPens I'll do that. I'm fed up looking for a glue that is invisible. Thanks!
these vintage pens are way cooler than the modern so-called limited editions which does nothing but screaming: "the person who bought this pen is rich"
I'm also a bigger fan of the antique Montblanc pens than the modern ones. Because so much metal is used today, the modern fountain pens are very heavy and don't feel as good in the hand (in my opinion).
Hi, i want to paint the letters and the star, Can you help me telling me what can i use to do that?
Hi, I use "Markal Lacquer-Stik" to refill the engravings. I found this on eBay.
hi Marco, why is it that sometimes you use Shellac and others the red bees wax?
I use shellac for the grip sections on the antique Montblanc pens and, in some models, for the piston units as well. I find the slight adhesive property of shellac quite effective in preventing the accidental loosening of the grip section. In theory, sealing wax could also suffice, but I consider that somewhat risky. When using just a small amount of shellac, it can be easily opened with a bit of heat. So, I reserve sealing wax for the components that cannot accidentally come undone during regular use.
@@MSPens and for modern pens what would you use? Is it different for solitaire metal on metal to resin on resin?
@@jamesgibby13 You don't need sealing wax on the piston unit for the modern ones. No ink should actually get there. The thread on the nib unit only needs to be sealed if a sealing ring has not yet been installed.
As ever, Marco, comprehensive & informative presentation, Best, Andrew 🙂
Hello Andrew, thanks a lot!
Always a pleasure, Marco.
What a wonderful and ingenious Montblanc tool set! I plan to buy one from you in the near future. I am one of your subscribers. Love your informative channel. Thanks for a great video.
Hi, thanks for the comment. Yes, the set has almost everything I need. But I'm not 100% satisfied yet. If I find the time I will change and expand my tool tray.
Excellent video Marco! Many thanks for posting
Thank you.
You are awesome.
Thanks for the kind words.
Exceptional restoration, Marco. In truth, I hadn't realised that the "Pix" trademark was that old - so I've learned a valuable historical lesson here, in terms of MB writing instruments; that you are so skilled in manufacturing a tool to dress-out the significant dent in the barrel, is impressive.
For third tier fountain pens, they're absolutely beautiful, Marco - particularly the pearl/black model.
I was very happy when I could buy the black / pearl at auction. Beautiful fountain pen.
It is exceptional, Marco...I'm a little envious 😉
Great video! What tool did you use to rework the knurling?
Hello, I used a sharp triangular scraper for this. Best regards
