so i made it too :D just by using WoodPrix plans :)
love your videos! and i love that they are not slow!
Same, have trouble watching tutorials slowly!
beautiful!
Thank you!
i love the speed of this video. usually tutorials get quite boring because it last for too long and its slow but this one is just perfect!
Glad you like it! I also watch a lot of video tutorials in fast mode. When I began making videos, I thought everyone did that haha, so I made mine fast. But learned it was best to slow down and let viewers choose their own speed :) So my new videos have become a normal pace with a little more confidence too ;)
I read somewhere how to find out if something is real silk or not. Put a little peace on fire. Real silk burns and turns black and will look like burned paper. Synthetic silk burns, turns black and has solid black and hard peaches. They bolt stink..😂
Oh yes that could be, the synthetic maybe like melting plastic. Have you seen my op shop fabric video? I like to cut out pieces of all kinds of fabric and place them on one sheet. Then felt it. I can usually tell if it is silk this way too. It felts quite well, shrinks up and crinkles. If you work with a lot of silk, eventually you can almost just feel it. Although, recent textiles are getting pretty good at imitating the feeling of silk! I have not yet tried the fire test.
Love this! What are the washing instructions?
Place in warm water with soap designed for wool. I like to use a tea tree soap or coconut soap. If you use another soap not designed for wool, sometimes due to a chemical reaction, the colour can run out of the fibre. 1. Warm Water soak 2. Soap designed for wool 3. Press and gently move around (too much agitation can shrink and felt the the fibre). 4. Hang to rinse and dry I hope this helps!
If you were going to use your own foot is it the same idea for shaping?
yes, you can use your own foot, place it on your resist material and draw around it. Then add 7cm total to the width, and 8cm total to the length. So 3.5 on the sides and 4cm on the top and bottom. I like to draw dots around using a small ruler. Then connect them.
So you get the bubble wrap from just a shipping store? I want to try this but im worried i won't be able to get a nice shape.
large size bubblewrap. Shipping store or anywhere that sells packaging supplies. I like to use a 2mm flat foam for the resist. Also helpful in large size if you can find it :)
Can you explain how to make the dye and vinegar mix. What kind or dye, what ratio? And do we have to use a heated pan for this process?
Hi, the closest explanation I have at the moment is in my wool yarn wool or fibre dyeing playlist. See link below. Dyeing fibre is quite the learning process but can easily be done by following the directions on the back of the dye container. I use Dharma Acid Dyes: www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/dharma-acid-dyes.html ruclips.net/p/PLcUfAIhYfatsDWwAA1oGz3gQqATuH_xGK&si=fJz4IF4sV5JAC_vS Watch: How to Prep Yarn (or wool fibre) Watch: Calculating dye amounts for your Fibre Amount Watch: Beginner Yarn Dyeing Tutorial
@muffsmerino thank you! I will check it out
How many mm THICKNESS of braided thread? You're so cute! You started out so shy and then wow! It was nice to see you gain confidence in your video, you're so skilled!
Thread is 2mm - 3mm. It’s a bit thick to thread. I recommend testing a nylon braid 1mm. It might be much easier to see. Thank you! Yes I continue to grow and gain confidence as I build the channel. I love making the videos, even though maybe I seem “off” or struggling haha.
Did you mention how much wools to get for a pair? I do have to watch the videos again. Maybe it was in The beginning.
Yes it’s in the beginning. Different amounts for different sizes :)
@muffsmerino thank you so much.
Thank you! I absolutely love your finished product!
Oh thank you! So glad you like it :)
Hi, Have you tried felting with Angora rabbit wool? If so, do you have any insite on any differences in the felting process?
Hi,I have not yet, but you have reminded me of a video I want to do where I create small sample squares and test as many different fibres as I can find! I can imagine that they will need to be blended with a fine wool like merino. I can also imagine the shorter hair length could leave a hairy texture, similar to mohair but maybe the fibres stay straight instead of curl. I can't say for sure, will need to test it.
@muffsmerino Thank you! It's a tough topic to find information on, Looking forward to this video when I comes out.
Not seen it completely yet but do it after this. I have noticed you are improving yourself. Beautiful to see you have gained more self confidence, to mine opinion. I like your jokes😂😂.
Oh my yes! Much improvement. No more fast videos. The camera throws me off sometimes and I draw blanks - but generally the communication and video quality is much better :)
Love it!
❤️
So impressive 👍👍
Glad 😌 thank you!
beautiful🎉
Thank you!
you only soak in water? I have been using citric acid and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid...but...now I know I need to get the excess soaking liquid off before I add my dye solution😊
Yes I only soak in water. The wool yarn is already clean. I don’t usually add acid because it gets rinsed out. It also depends on how I’m dyeing it. Maybe soaking in acid is good for speckling? I add my acid to my pan when I’m ready to dye it or, when I’m ready to add speckle.
Super cute. I’ve gotta try this.
This is beautiful, you're definitely inspiring me to try making more fitted wearables. How much weight of fibre did you use in total for this?
@@kachsavage4047 Oh my I missed one of the most important parts! I will weigh the two vests when I’m back in the studio and get back you. Will also pin it in the comments :)
@@muffsmerino thank you so much!
Hi, Thank you for your straight forward instructions. What size is the wood board that you are felting on? My space is limited so this is a great idea. I would love create a garment. But I need to use a pattern that has some extra room and flow across my abdomen area. Lol.
I like how you suggested keeping an art journal of your progress, I hadn't thought of that ..and I think I'll keep a photo journal digitally so I can see the different things I've made. Thank you! ❤
It was incredibly helpful for achieving more with my art style! I made drastic improvements because of all the samples.
Bless you, you're such a sweetheart. You're doing a beautiful job with these videos. Thank you for doing them, they are helping me too! ❤
Thank you. Good to hear, so encouraging.
Fabulous! I noticed you didn't use any "Mesh" in your process. Did you only use bubble wrap on the top & bottom with your garment inbetween? If so, then when would you use Meshing and for what purpose? I'm brand new at this amazing ancient art and I am excited to learn!! Thank you!! Gorgeous unique Tank Top!
Oh awesome, I am so excited to hear. Welcome. If you want a lightweight delicate felt top, then life is easier - First lay out your mesh or silk gauze over the resist. Fold it over, then cut the silk to the right shape, fold over the silk or mesh fabric edges. Then use one layer of wool only over top of the silk. This is a fun process and you can watch how I do this in the Nuno-felted scarf video. It is a similar process. The shrinkage amount should also be in that video. Generally, the felt will shrink mostly in the direction it is laid out. So the shrinkage is different when only using one layer of wool, compared to two crosshatched layers. You can create a test piece to measure the approximate shrinkage. I will do another "felt with me" vest video, where I place all kinds of fun colourful decorations on it, using only one layer and silk mesh. :)
@muffsmerino WOW! Thank you so much for your generous teachings and uplifting encouragement! I really need to know someone like you. I'm so happy for you. You even help me solve a small table problem with your amazing idea get a large size piece of wood to temporarily lay on top for those big projects! I truly Thank God I met you. I really hope to be able to follow your directions and learn from you. There's no one like you in New York city! Wish you were here :) 🌻💖🌟
Yay! Feel free to ask me any questions in the comments, Instagram or through Etsy messaging :) excited for your felting journey!!!
@muffsmerino WOW you are terrific!! I am really looking forward to this!! 🌟THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!

Glad you appreciate it! It’s so much work!
I am just starting in felting. Not 3d figures, not my thing but flat items so far. I am so glad your video popped up in my feed! Those looks like fun (despite the work😊) thank you for shar8ng! New subscriber ❤
Yay! Glad you found the videos :) Thabks for subscribing, Keep it small, thin, fun and simple ;)

A glue gun?
I believe I attempted a glue gun early on and had issues with it drying too fast before I could place the sole. Sometimes if it wasn’t placed well I will reposition it. If you have a solid placement method in place, I’m sure the glue gun would work well :)
Hi Lori, thanks a lot! You nailed it! After binging your videos, I can now dye solid yarn.
So so glad to hear! Thank you for sharing :) I’ve been getting great feedback on the dye videos lately so I’m feeling very encouraged.
Thank you so much for these videos - will be dyeing my first mini skein this week! I might have missed it but do you add vinegar/citric acid in any step of the dyeing process and if so, how much?
I add it once the pot is quite hot! I only add half the amount. Then I add the rest 15 min later, for more even dye results! White vinegar Approx 50ml per 100g Half it for pastels, double it for darks :)
@@muffsmerino thank you! I've dyed a few swatches using Dharma acid dyes and the colour has taken beautifully :) I've used their caribbean blue, fluorescent fuchsia, and bright yellow (and mixed them to create other colours since they're primaries) but I've had quite a bit of colour left in the water with the pink and blue - is that normal?
You did an awesome job, thank you for going step by step as I've always wanted to learn the basics of slipper making. And this video helps a lot to know the process! ❤❤
Thank you and so glad to hear! If you have any questions during the process, feel free to get in touch :)
Thank you ! @@muffsmerino
Hey awesome video! I have a question ma’am? Can I make felt 2 to 4 inches thick?
Yes you can make it thick, like a wool felt ball, it is very thick. It may require more vigourous felting and fulling work. If it doesn't need to look pretty, or be a particular shape or size, it can be fully felted in a washing machine or dryer. You can buy pre-made thick sheets called "wool bats" particularly for the purpose of making thick felt. You can layer them, felt them, then finish it by hand if you're strong, or use washing machine at 10, 15 intervals to shrink to appropriate sizing.
Hi I just love your videos I have a question Is it possible to increase the size of hat old hat and fix the bim of the hat by cutting ?
An old hat size cannot be felted larger, if the wool is already felted, it won’t take new wool additions, it won’t grab or stick once it’s felted. Depending on the type of wool hat, if it’s hand felted and somewhat porous, it may be possible to cut it and felt the edges. Especially if it’s 100% wool,
I did it. Thank you
Oh so glad to hear!!!
How do you get the yarn dyed without the heat?
Great question. It’s the type of dye that determines the setting or bonding method. Jacquard Dye-Na-Flow for painting on fabric, definitely going to try it. Fibre reactive dyes are popular for cotton, but still need heat setting for wool. Natural dyes can set cold.
finally got around to watching this😅 Your "massage voice" made me LOL!
haha, glad I could make you laugh :)
Thank you Lori for all the generosity and effort gone into this video and also all the other previous videos. Love Love Love your content and very inspiring.
Thank you so much. Your comment and all the comments mean a lot to me. Always encouraging. Definitely more to come :)
What a wonderful technique ❤ thank you for sharing! I love these!
It's so cool isn't it! I would love to see more artist artwork using this technique! I can imagine all the colours, spirals, shapes, layers one could create!
Magnífic
Thanks! Glad you like it :)
I made several pairs of slippers about 8 years ago for my husband and kids and hubby wants a new pair because he loves his slippers. I needed a refresher course just to make sure I can achieve the same results. Maybe this time I’ll make myself a pair because I kept the first pairs I made (they aren’t pretty) and I think I deserve a nice pair this time around. Thank you very much for your video.
I made the video based on my studio classes, so all the information is there, but please feel free to ask any questions you might have during the process :)
@ thank you! I was meaning to make a natural/red combo but the red roving isn’t wool so it never felted to the natural wool (it’s good for needle felting though). I ended up using some green/blue/yellow combo I had from the last time and hubby is loving his new slippers which came out better than last time thanks to your guidance. All that’s left is to sew some leather soles but I’ve been busy with Xmas presents. I don’t make slippers heavier than 100 grams because we live in Mexico and it doesn’t get very cold. Thank you again for your videos.
@@katiavera2086 Oh hello all the way to Mexico! Oh yes my experience in felting lightweight slippers is immense haha. I first started off wanting to make them out of Merino wool with all the pretty hand dyed fibres. I added silk inside to reinforce them. It is also much easier to make lightweight slippers. I found mine to pill holes more quickly though. How are yours holding up? When I began felting, I felted with all kinds of different fibres I found, some felted and some didn't. It's defiantly part of the learners felting experience haha.
@ the first slippers I made held up fine for a couple of years and then I bought wool felt and put an additional inner sole in all of them and then felted additional wool onto the holes that formed after being worn a lot. I had originally put cork soles and that has worn out too so hubby put a new cork sole on his. The ones that had the most wear and tear were my youngest son’s because his feet grew a couple of centimeters after I had made them so we felted more wool and converted them into slip ons 😬 by cutting the back of the heel. I’m sure he’ll request new ones when he sees his father’s this Christmas. I’ve only worked with lambswool roving bought from Michaels, and some lightly spun wool yarn that I had to unspin in order to make the slippers.
Correction update! On page 9 of the free downloadable PDF and at 3:15 minutes in this video, the amounts at the bottom two examples are incorrect. They have now been corrected in the free downloadable PDF only. I am not able to make the correction in the video. The corrections are as follows: 10g x 10% = 1ml of dye solution or .1g of dye powder. Next correction: 1g of yarn x 5% = .05ml of dye solution or .005g of dye powder. (these are the last two lines at 3:15 min into the video :)
Thanks for the great instructions. How long can you keep a dye solution before it "goes bad?"
I have kept my dye solution in containers for way too long haha. I have some that are a year old. They don't exhaust as much as the new solutions do. 25% less exhaustion I would say, after one year, or, the dye dye powder themselves, I have some that area really old, its the similar.. approx 25% less exhaustion. In particular fluorescent fuchsia.
such a great tutorial😊
Thank you! Glad you appreciated it :)
Nice work! I added beads to a bag I felted - wish I had thought of this technique- I hand stitched each one by hand 😅 - I will definitely try your technique if I ever decide to add beads to a bag in the future. Thx!
It's a great way to add beads to wool felt! It does require the right type of sheer fabric that wont burrow holes while being felted :) Definitely give it a try, it is so much fun to do! Especially placing the beads is so relaxing :)
Thank you for this video! how do you clean the felt? can it be vacuum? can it be put on washing machine?
The felt can be placed in a warm soapy bath, gently hand washed. Set to dry in the sun or shade. Once it is dry, it cleans up well with a light razor shave. Shave the pilling off. A lot of the dirt or coffee stains will land on the fuzzy bits and you can simply shave them off.
@@muffsmerino thank you for the reply!
I've been a crafty person for two decades, and I'd thought that I'd seen it all... This is amazing, it's the most creative and innovative thing I've seen in a really long time! Really really beautiful work, bravo!
Thank you for your lovely comment! So encouraging to hear. Glad you liked it :)
Thank you so much Lori! Great tutorial as usual!
So glad to hear!
Try using glauber's salt as a leveling agent where you can add multiple dyes at the same time and hopefully that quick tip helps you out i really liked the video interesting colour chart i must say.... any tips on achieving a bright flourscent pastel shade of coral 🙏😊
That's a great trip! What does it do exactly? I haven't watched my own video in a while - for referencing. I am going to look it up. Pastel fluorescence can be challenging.I made a beautiful coral shade using fluorescent fuchsia and brilliant yellow. Try .1g Brilliant Yellow and .05 fluorescent fuchsia... as a starting point.
@@muffsmerino it slows down the dying process so all colours strike yarn at the same time resulting in even dye bath and more solid colour way... hope that helps you out 😁
@@markrainey3268 This is great news! Thank you so much. I will definitely be trying this out :) My struggles may be over.
You are soooo amazing! Thank you for all this wonderful information and for the immense amount of kindness in your heart. Precious!
Thank you for sharing, that is so kind of you to say! Glad to know the information is helpful :)
I'm looking to buy shoe lasts and wondering if I should buy the same size as my feet or do I buy a few sizes larger and then the slippers shrink down to my size after drying.
@@simonmilburn4879 Definitely buy in your size (snug fit) or one size up (sock wearing). The finished slipper will be finished and set to fit the shoe last size. If you want to wear thick socks, get one size up. If you like a lot of space, I recommend getting a larger size. If you’re selling or gifting slippers, I recommend making them one size up always.
