    The only well knowns who could bend like him were HOWLING WOLF AND THE BLIND OWL -tho neither turned it up quite as high. He could go in out of impossible high notes grab fills for breathing room just in time unlike anyone EVER HAS I played a while -and could never figure how he could keep harps perfectly broken in like that. He a was genious on the level of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck Roy Buchanon Buddy Guy the kings the Walters Elmore James etc.

    Thanks for posting this rare recording. I don't care how bad the fidelity is - it is the PBBB in the period in which they were very likely the best band in the USA. Paul was generous to let others sing leads as the evidence shows here -- LOL. Yes, Bloomfield may not have been having his best night here as someone said below, but I don't care -- I can hear my favorite guitar player from the 1960's doing stuff no one else was doing. Just "Born in Chicago" is all I needed -- Bloomers is ripping. Thanks again. As far as the comment below about Elvin's band being hated in the Bay Area, well, let me say that, yes, he was no Bloomfield, but he and his band(s) had a lot of soul and they were a party band. He was drinking heavily for a while and IMO, he was best seen in a small club, not on the stage of Winterland. His shows were a blast.

    I love Paul Butterfield's harp playing as powerful and tough playing. Charlie Musselwhite was my great intro to harmonica and the blues. Paul Butterfield was a revelation that helped me play with even more confidence. I do think harp or harmonica is a very special instrument with it's location at the mouth and head! It's powerful because the hands and tongue with power from breath shaping that powerhouse sound.

    So recorded Sept/Oct 1966. Just after East/West was releasd in August. By June 1967 Bloomfield was playing with The Electric Flag at Monterey. I wonder what a third album would have dounded like with this lineup? Considering how different the first two were from each other. Oh well, it was just not to be.

    • @billiam3367
      @billiam3367 19 дней назад

      Bloomfield left by December of 1967 and moved to Marin County to be with his pal Nick Gravenitis - RIP as of Sept 2024. The Flag was put together in early 1967 and as you said, debuted at the Monterey Pop Festival. I saw them in Dec '67 at Winterland and they were tight and Bloomfield was on fire. especially because BB King was the headliner. Bloomfield introduced BB that night (instead of Bill Graham) and he was just so excited. He is the one who urged Graham to bring Muddy, Buddy, BB, Cotton, etc. to SF so us white kids could see the real deal. Man, those were great times for me, a teenager.
