Paul left this Earth too soon ....so unfair for his three sons. It's a shame that when anyone in the public eye dies they rewrite their life, leaving out people that were most important to them.
These two became known and "The Dangerous Duo" because of their alcohol and drug dependence. Their temperments weren't compatible and that began to show itself on stage. One night Rick played the Harp and Butter strummed the guitar--the audience got really angry--not what they paid to see
Paul was the love of my life, and he was taking medication to withdraw from alcohol in spring of 87. We invisioned raising our son, then seven, together.Things aren't always as they seem.Rick and Paul were like brothers. I met Paul from Levon in 75. Levon was also part of their family. Richard Manuel died in 86, Mike Bloomfield, a very sweet guy, died in 81.In the 80s people didn't discuss mental health , not like they do now. Many musicians suffering from anxiety, depression ECT self medicated and got hooked...and then assholes exploited them. People have their own agendas they will use you and toss you aside. The underside of society is an ugly dark place.
I was fortunate enough to see these guys (my two biggest musical heroes) play as a duo at a small club in south Florida around 1984 or '85. There was a point in the set where they traded off and Danko played harmonica while Butterfield played guitar. I don't remember anybody getting angry. Everybody seemed to think it was pretty cool that they switched things up and showed their versatility. While I knew Butterfield played some guitar, I had never heard Danko play harp. It was a great show.
Two of my favorites! Love Rick's solo acoustic shows...

Rest In Peace Paul and Rick both jamming together in haven I bet
