🤔..Paul was my soulmate, we invisioned raising our son, Justin, together. He was using meds to ween off of heroin and alcohol, he was getting well. The great Paul Butterfield. I was 12. Another “parent party”, in which the adults were being adults & the few kids, well depending on age…did whatever. I was coming down the stairs during one of these get togethers, and there was this man. Playing at Woodstock, which is what they had blasting on the tv but through the speakers. And I was in awe. I had been playing harmonica since I was eight years old. But never…had I seen someone like Paul Butterfield. And so, as the years past and I continued to play, I used Butter as a staple, or…a pillar of what I wanted to sound like. Now, this could never be done but…I never stopped trying. Love you man…and thank you. And this could never be truer then now…”Better Days” my brother…
@@BluesStraightFromTheHarp Yes, I used to, but haven't since the 90s. (I generally played through an Astatic JT-30. I bought a Shure 545, but found it a bit ungainly, and never used it.) I was just awe-struck by Butterfield. It wasn't until I heard an interview with Paul's brother Peter, that I learned Paul wasn't born playing that way, but practiced and practiced for hours every day.(duh) I don't know if you had his first album, but after reading Pete Welding's liner notes, I went out and bought Little Walter records, and it opened a new world. I still believe Butterfield was a major milestone in blues and, IMHO, it was he and Mike Bloomfield who brought blues to a wide audience, not the Stones or Led Zeppelin.
Man, you coulda been me. Listen to genius Butterefield. Realize that i can never be the great which he was, but keep trying anyway. Difficult to explain.
@@DavyJones-pf8vn I hear ya…I’d never try to be “as good” but certainly I have learned from listening to Butterfield. I think like all things music, we all have our own styles.
What facts do you have to substantiate this statement? I mean look at the icons and bands that influenced this band. Look at the sheer number of African American blues bands who never got the promotion or push that this band got. So I'm not saying your wrong but I'm saying you really don't have any basis to prove this. Howlin Wolfs band with Hubert Sumlin was incredible. Muddy Waters had some great bands. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers(Eric Clapton version) has influenced so many musicians with literally one album. Why does there have to be a greatest when there is just so much to enjoy and absorb.
spotlight and camera are favoring Bishop because he was the hot charting act of the time. People wanted to see him as he had popular appeal. Strange to see Bloomfield being ignored for the most part.
Mike was off scene for a whole lot of this period for the most part. David Sanborn to gone on to become a successful session musician Paul was be seeing up around bearsville Woodstock New York with the rco All-Stars. Elvin pretty much was known cuz he was releasing lots and lots of material at the time as you said he was like the flavor of the month so when they spotlight it was like hey guess what that's the great Elvin Bishop of the Elvin Bishop band and he was once a member of the Butterfield Blues Band It is interesting how much they did focus on him but it is what it is back in the day
shouldve been billed as the elvin bishop blues band ... dude was lovin the spotlight. the editor of this production mustve had a vendetta against Bloomfield because they barely focus on him. its a shame because as far as I'm aware, this was his last filmed concert . If I'm incorrect please let me know or reply with a link.
Bloomers was way out of it on smack at this point, less than 2 years to live, Elvin was riding high and the biggest name on the stage that night, fair or not
other than Bill Graham out in San Francisco there's the other legendary producer the father of The Summer of Love himself Chat helms introducing everything.

Alvin, Paul and Mike what a great bunch... Nothing but the blues! 💙🎵🎶
My bad, I made Elvin a chipmunk! Old pig boy was awesome! Old timers setting in on me. Lol! Nothing but the blues 💙🎵🎶

You know its Elvin Bishop by his accent even before the lights come on. Love ya Elvin.
What a band , Butterfield, Bloomfield, and Bishop!! My favorite band of the late 60s!
The great Mike Bloomfield!
Absolutely! Mike had to be tuned into Paul & his style, along with every other musician up there. They all, together make the sum…
the greatest blues band there ever was .or ever will be .anybody wanna argue?
Damn straight!!
I wanne argue
And so was Chet Helms.

I agree, Elvin comes out on top here. Too often overlooked.
I hear you and second that, they also mixed him way down under E. Bs squakking Gibson , such a wasted opportunity.

WOW
i would jam w/ the mouth harp but never as a master now thats master PAUL y'all !
Now that's what I'm talking about.
Mike Bloomfield is a bad ass!!!
Modest Mike , never to step on anyone's toes. Greatest white bluesplayer.

Jerome Arnold wasn't available?
Who’s the drummer?
The Three B's.....
Bugsy Maugh on bass!
Definitely not Bugsy, unless the brother magically turned into a white dude!
It MIGHT be Harvey Brooks, but I am not certain of that.
Another POSSIBILITY is Roger Troy
Willy, Bugsy WAS WHITE. You're the opposite of hip.
