An Affordable Wildlife Lens - The TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3. Who's it for?
TTArtisan sent over their 500mm prime lens for me to test out, so I took it for a day out at Slimbridge Wetlands to figure out who it's for. And if you're wondering how long it took me to sync the swan to the music: too long.
In this video I take a look at how suitable it is, and how it performs, for wildlife photography, wildlife videography, and 35mm film photography.
Buy the TTArtisan 500mm f/6.3 from the official store: ttartisan.store/products/500mm?ref=edocudmm (affiliate link). It's available for E, Z, RF, L, X, GFX, F, and EF mounts (!)

Is the Sigma fp L the Ideal Landscape Camera?
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.3 месяца назад
Sigma loaned me the fp L, a tiny 61 megapixel camera, to try out. So I took it to the Bannau Brycheiniog, which I think I'm somewhat mispronouncing repeatedly throughout this video (also neuadd). It turns out that hiking for hours in each direction means I forget things, and I didn't end up with any particularly interesting photos anyway, but I did at least take a good one the week before! Which is the better affordable L-mount 50mm? - Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN vs Panasonic LUMIX 50mm f/1.8
Просмотров 2,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Sigma sent over their 50mm f/2 DG DN prime for L-Mount for me to test, so I decided to compare it to the Panasonic 50mm f/1.8 lens that I already own. This video was filmed on the Nikon Z6III, which caused me some problems; not only the issues covered in my last two videos, but the various AF and exposure oddities throughout this one 😅 This is also why it's somewhat cobbled together and missing...
A Major Flaw in Video Footage from my Nikon Z6III
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.4 месяца назад
The Nikon Z6III is doing something very weird in its video modes, and this seems to be tied either to the sensor or in how they're adjusting exposure - it's exhibiting a constant flickering/flashing effect. Here's a short video with more scientific examples after I ran across this in real-world usage. Follow-on from ruclips.net/video/9EWPmvbIyYo/видео.html. Check out @testcams follow-up with a ...
What's going on in the shadows in video on the Nikon Z6III?
Просмотров 4,8 тыс.4 месяца назад
My Z6III is back but I've run into another problem 😅 This time it's tied to dynamic range and noise performance in video. If you have any thoughts or suggestions of how to fix this, please let me know in the comments. Keep in mind that RUclips's compression clobbers some of the noise. It should be most obvious at 4K, and I've included a zoomed-in example to hopefully offset that. I did also try...

Nikon Z8 Firmware 2.0 now available - includes Bird AF, auto-capture, and much more
I’ve had the FPL for over a year and the more I use it the more I enjoy it. I have added a flip screen and a battery grip that allows me to shot for over a day with one battery . I use Sigma, Leica and a Lumix 28-200 lens for travel I’m a long time Leica user and the only one I have left is my Q and it doesn’t get much use theses days. The flip screen has made this the most satisfying camera I’ve ever owned. .
Nikon should listen to the highlights been blown out. Is it a solution to shoot -1 stop in exposure compensation?
Great video...just starting to capture Birds in Flight....want a light weight zoom lens for Z6iii to begin my journey. Have a DX 50-250 now....suggestions? Just joined your channel. Jack.
Ooh good question, and thanks for joining! :D In terms of native Z-mount lenses, there's quite a few options with different compromises: Nikon 180-600 or Tamron 150-500 - both just under 2KG, so pretty heavy, but definitely hand-holdable and have the greatest flexibility. Nikon 100-400 or Tamron 50-400 - both under 1.5KG, so lighter options but obviously have less reach. I haven't actually tried either of these! And the final options would instead be the prime lenses, like the Nikon 400mm f/4.5 or the 600mm f/6.3. Certainly less flexible but they're really very lightweight. Also more expensive! I'm less familiar with a lot of the F-mount options, but if price is a consideration then an adapted Sigma 150-600 might be a good option. I personally use the Nikon 180-600 and I'm pretty happy with that.
Good tip. I do the same thing with motorbikes too
Constant F4 and 24mm start is a deal breaker. Great review tho.
I love this camera but I can’t never get the focus to work and for some reason it always blows up the highlights for me
Interesting ! 500mm manual focus lens. Certainly would make life very different ! I have a few of their smaller manual lens and they are interesting. Not technically wonderful but give a very unique look. As for getting freebies you seem honest and as long as you keep your objective was and don’t claim something is perfect it’s ok . It’s hardly like they sent you a Hasselblad x2d. They did send out about 50 of them as freebies for RUclipsrs mind you 🤓
Great video. It is all nice idea... just you have 2k sitting on shelf most of the time sadly, but I always liked sigma cameras and from time to time I will go back to them. Hopefully they bring something new soon. Great video.
Nice review!
Great camera. The lower megapixels helps it too. Z8 and z9 are the beasts !
kudos for pointing out (what should be obvious) if you receive something free it's hard to claim be completely unbiased
I just picked up the Z6iii in Australia for A$3400 shipped, which is about 1733 pounds at current rate. Was lucky that it just happened to be Nikon day (November 12th). Just waiting for my FtoZ adapter now to actually run it with my old AF-S lenses and to finally get VR on those. Looking at these CFexpress cards and that they basically can make your burst buffer almost infinite is mad. Just ordered the CFexpress card you mentioned and it's indeed a great deal, thanks !
I find your results with this lens interesting. Because it reminds me of a lens that was rather famous/infamous back in the 1975 to 1985 time frame. It all revolved around one single lens that featured a multitude of lens mounts and 3rd and 4 party brand names. Most often it was identified as the TeleAstranar 400 mm f6.3 and at one point it was reviewed by herbert Keppler, the founder of Modern Photography magazine. What made it infamous was the low selling price, when I first saw an ad for one the price was 39.90 USD, back around 1985 inflation had driven the price up to 59.95. I picked up a used sample wearing the Soligor brand name and was actually was a fairly good lens. Recently mounted my FTX II on it and tested it out on my Z7 II. Which confirmed it does have decent sharpness but manual focus with a lens this long is challenging, my hit rate for focus on a moving squirrel was 2 out of 20 shots and even the best was off just a tick with sharp ears but the eyes a tiny bit soft. So I am quite certain that you have NOT mislead anyone with your findings, they fall exactly in line with what I observed with my 400mm. BTW when I am focusing manually I use the Viewfinder zoom to get it spot on. Mainly because I have found the Focus Peaking to allow too much variation in focus. Hopefully that focus confirmation for dumb lenses in the Zf will be spread to other Z models thru firmware updates, because I have found that to be very accurate with my AF Micro Nikkor which does require manual focus but is chipped. I'll also note that it helped me make my final decision about getting the Tamron 150-500 zoom, because the AF on that lens works quite well and I get a much better hit rate. BTW, talked to Tamron about the failure of their lens utility software to adjust the linear focus features and apparently they are still working on the software for this particular lens. It's seems that the Tamron is still using it's pre-production firmware but good news is the AF works well. I can also state with certainty that the Tamron 150-500 is a very very good lens in terms of optics, not S line class but very close as long as you use the AF.
Appreciated your coverage on this lens and your channel in general. I watch a lot but don’t comment. But I wanted to thank you 👍🏻
Thanks very much! 😀
I am happy when we have a day without sun, but I can’t imagine going through 2 weeks without it
Haha yeah we’ve finally had a couple of days of sun and it’s such a welcome relief 😆
I don’t think that the tripod foot is an issue you can turn it to the top or the side and it will not be in your palm
Robert...as a beginner in BIF and the Nikon Z8+180-600,your videos come in very helpful for me.Also your practice video for BIF is superb man ! subscribed

The fp box is probably one of the best camera ideas I've heard in awhile
Hahaha :D I'm gonna play it to myself every time I have hard time getting through the Polish winter :D
Haha yeah I think you guys get similarly bleak winters to us, although maybe with some actual snow 😅 This weather was supposed to have cleared this morning and it's still here! 😭
lol
Is there anybody who used zf+1.4x+150-600mm ? I'd like to get some review
Does it for me sometimes but I just turned the buttons off. Good video tho but I do love the lens. 👍🏻
Camera hasn’t made it out for a morning cycle for weeks. I went out and did some macro last weekend. Fun guy! :dadjoke: I have a led cube light to substitute for ☀️ And discovered that the Olympus focus stacking feature is a bit non deterministic. I need to do further work in the studio to figure it out.
Red Dwarf is your answer? Not bad, but I still take pictures in the wood - no shadows.
😅 It's depressing without the blue and yellow. We had it here today. I had to have my lights on inside during the day or I couldn't see properly. Fun fun fun in the sun sun sun
🎵 It’s cold outside! There’s no kind of atmosphere!! 🎵
When the light gets low, its a great time to try out some long exposure techniques!
Ooh good shout! My fallback has been night street photos but the winter market (with all the snazzy lights) isn’t open yet, and worse it’s surrounded half the city centre with naff metal fences 🙈
Buy yourself an F2.8 tele lens for the birds
That’s the dream! When I stumble across a cool £13k down the back of the sofa anyway 😅
@@robert_may I have a Canon 300mm F2.8LIS I got almost 2 decades ago it's still my best lens works beautifully with a Canon R7 32MP APSC same pixel pitch as a M4/3 a 1.4xIII and 2xIII also give me sharp results even in UK light. I do wish R7 was a stacked sensor though. looking to get a Nikon Z8 soon. Have a check for second hand you can get great deals for less than £2000
the bloody leafs will be gone soon . sun is arriving Monday hopefully. cheers
Haha yeah it’s typical that it arrived just as the leaves hit their peak colours. Hopefully this week will be a bit brighter!
The issue here is going to be for those who put the camera in Auto. Imagine your exposure going from ISO 5000 where its the worst, to 6400 where it significantly improves. The variation in colors, IQ, and quality would ruin the footage. I've returned my Z6 III and still, 4 months later, am waiting for a resolution or even acknowledgment from Nikon. I know Nikon has been working with owners and Nikon has requested the NEV footage to investigate. This sucks, because the Z8 is too big/heavy and the Z6 III seems useless for pro-work, even though it fits the bill in features, size, weight, and price.
Yeah agreed! I’m surprised there’s been no acknowledgement from them so far - even if they have to bodge it there should be a way to at least compensate for it in firmware (by averaging exposure over time or something like that). It’s been a few months since I made these videos and I still see people understating how much of a pain in the arse this problem is. That’s been my frustration too - the Z6III looked like a decent competitor to the S5II for video but unfortunately this problem meant it didn’t work for me. There’s not really anything else in the lineup that will fill that void, so it’d be nice to see a fix for it in the Z6III. Maybe a Z5II will appear at some point otherwise.
@ - On paper, the Z6 III was unbeatable. In fact, it has features that aren’t found on $5000+ cameras. What annoys me beyond imagination is the lack of options here from Nikon. The Z6 III was perfect size, weight, and performance. The Z8 is too big. Too heavy. Why can’t we have an A1 size and performance? Frustrating. Panasonic lacks in glass. AF. At this point I’m waiting to see what Sony releases with the A7 V or Canon with R6 III. Although I’m a Nikon shooter at heart, I have no options and Nikon isn’t offering resolution.
Nice 👍
Bah, I did make subtitles for this video but apparently forgot to embed them when exporting. Sorry!

waht a chill video
Wow a none screaming video on YT. Gj and nice review
Nice video! I'm relatively new to the professional camera market and hobby and recently got this lens for experimenting a bit and taking pictures of the moon. The channel Nebula Photos also has a comparison, showing this lens can do some nice astrophotography, so I might check that out at some point. I only run 2 other lenses, a 10-18 and 17-70 on my a6700, which, in turn, gives me a crop to about 750mm, which is quite huge and exactly why I bought this lens. While I wish, this lens was a bit easier to carry around (I guess this extends to any super zooms for larger sensor cameras.), it's been doing its job just fine, and I've had no issues with it, apart from the challenge of handling this thing and getting the focus right. This is where I love the newer camera features, which allow you to mirror your viewfinder to a phone or laptop display making focusing much easier, even though focus peaking is pretty nice, already. I've successfully gotten a few nice pics of the moon with the 500mm, and I think it'll prove useful for more stuff in the future! I'm planning to go for skylines and taking pics from more elevated positions, as I've also done a long exposure above the city at night on my 17-70, which I quite enjoyed. Love that pic!

Right! He totally is 😂❤
Well-done! Happy to see your thoughts on something which could be interesting to those of use who might have an occasional use for such gear and therefore not planning to spend significant money on a more "pro" lens. As they say on Fox News, :"Fair and Balanced" review 😊
Fantastic not review! Thank you for the video.
Great video as usual Rob, good price too. Take care mate
You have a great voice for radio. I imagine you could do well as a classical music DJ. You would get alot of listeners just for the quality of your voice. You could also narrate documentaries.
I also thought this. How the bbc hasn't offered him a contract amazes me. The man was born for radio or audio books.
I find your complete lack of Knowledge a bit Stunning. For example Tamron has software on their web site call the "Tamron Lens Utility" that you can download for Free. With that software you can customize how the manual focus works on the lens, if you want a wider "throw" for precision you can do that. You can also adjust the Linear and Non Linear modes. In addition you can set the function for those buttons, so you can simply turn it off. In many of your complaining videos it's really head pounding frustrating hearing you complain about something that is easily correctable if you had just taken the time to inform yourself about what is available to adjust for some minor "defect" such as Vignetting. Really, by now your should have reviewed every single setting in your Z9 so that you would know that something like Vignetting and Lens distortion can be corrected in the camera. If you were to actually USE the Z Nikkor 24-120 on your Z9 you would discover quickly that the IBIS eliminates the need for on board stabilization. I am 69 years old and have hand held my Z7 II with this lens down to 1/2 second with motion free images. Granted I'm not 100% at being that steady but a 50% hit rate at 1/2 second proves it's useful. If you are shooting 1/8 second or faster it's duck soup for someone in good health. If you suffer from tremors and shakes then use a tripod.
Hi Robert, does the laptop area feel somewhat padded? If youre setting this down with a decent amount of weight to get the camera, are you going to be worried about the impacr on your laptop?
Ooh good question. It has a bit of padding, and there’s space in front of the laptop sleeve to put something else like a thin jacket etc, which I often do. There’s also a bit of padding between the camera compartment and that front area. I don’t worry about my laptop in it when out and about, but I also don’t tend to load this bag super heavy like my larger hiking bags, so it might depend on how heavy you load it 🤔 I personally don’t worry, however. Hope that helps!
@robert_may cheers, much appreciated
So did I understand right? Fuji X trans sensor is NOT supported by DXO? 😢 What does this mean?
It’s supported by the software in general, and with the original DeepPrime denoising system, but the latest DeepPrimeXD2 system doesn’t support them yet unfortunately. Support is coming at some point - I think it’s down to machine learning model needing a completely different data set due to the difference between the X-Trans and Bayer sensor characteristics.
@ thanks Robert for the helpful answer. I am using PL7 btw. I like the Nik Collection and will buy it instead of PL8.
Excellent review. Well done! I have a G9 and am flirting with a S9. The 18-40mm plus the 28-200mm would be a great travel kit.
I'm really hoping Panasonic bring out a new compact M43 body - the GH7 and G9II are really solid, so a compact variant similar to the S9 being a scaled-down S5II would be really cool! If you do take the plunge on the S9, the Sigma compact primes (like the 45mm f/2.8 DG DN) would be worth a gander too 😀
@@robert_may Thanks for your reply. Yes you are 100% correct. An update of the GX9 would be ideal and my preferred option. It is just a shame that it doesn’t exist! The MFT lenses are great and I been able to collect a nice collection of Olympus and LUMIX / Leica lenses expensively: 6 primes (f1.8 or faster), 4 zooms. I still have a 5DIII for full frame bokeh duties and the EF lenses are of course readily adaptable. Also, pricing is anomalous at the moment when I live: S9>G9II>S5II. Makes the decision difficult! Maybe I should just keep waiting for the elusive GX10!
Hi Robert I have copied your settings for bird in flight photos and I have a small problem. When I use your settings I only have half of the picture on the CFExpress card yet on the SD Card I have the full picture I have tried this with my own settings and no problems full picture on both cards could you give me a clue where it may have gone wrong please note I am a beginner
Oh that’s odd! Do you mean it’s writing corrupted files to the CF card (e.g. they can’t be opened), the pictures are half the size, or you only have half the total number of pictures?
I saw a channel that only managed to click for 8 seconds. What could have happened? How do you put it in this electronic mode? Is that H+ mode?
Slow card possibly? 🤔 The Nikon cameras don't have huge buffers, they tend to just be able to write faster than they can take photos - you can get the same performance on the Z9/Z8 but it requires a really fast card due to the larger files.
A mini guide on how and when to use the electronic would be interesting. Depending on what type of subjects and subject moments, or camera movements, it is recommended or not recommended. The question of autofocus in H+ compared to reflex cameras scares me a little. Is the lack of precision during the burst at those speeds so drastic?
Ooh yeah it’d be nice to cover something like that in a video. General gist: if there’s obvious vertical lines in the background and you’re panning past them, mechanical shutter is better. For everything else I’d use electronic - the sensor readout on the Z6III isn’t fast enough to not skew verticals when panning (even the Z9’s isn’t), but it is fast enough that you shouldn’t see warpy wings or oddities like that. And yeah the difference when running in the H+ mechanical mode was noticeable to me, but other people might have different experiences. Been a while since I had the X-H2S or OM-1, which would be an interesting comparison as they have faster sensors and still have mechanical shutters 🤔
@@robert_may I thought that z8 and z9 had identical behavior to the mechanical shutter due to the reading speed. In the problems you report during panning, are you referring to the ultra-fast modes which have behaviors similar to video recording? (60fps and above) I think the z6iii is paradoxically faster at reading videos from the data I've seen. However, I really don't like the exposed sensor on such an expensive machine at all. Thanks so much for the advice!
