Which affordable L-mount 50mm? - Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN vs Panasonic LUMIX 50mm f/1.8
Sigma sent over their 50mm f/2 DG DN prime for L-Mount for me to test, so I decided to compare it to the Panasonic 50mm f/1.8 lens that I already own.
This video was filmed on the Nikon Z6III, which caused me some problems; not only the issues covered in my last two videos, but the various AF and exposure oddities throughout this one 😅 This is also why it's somewhat cobbled together and missing a few sections - I'll be back to normal next time.
All photos are out-of-camera JPEGs from the Sigma fp L.

A Major Flaw in Video Footage from my Nikon Z6III
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.День назад
The Nikon Z6III is doing something very weird in its video modes, and this seems to be tied either to the sensor or in how they're adjusting exposure - it's exhibiting a constant flickering/flashing effect. Here's a short video with more scientific examples after I ran across this in real-world usage. Follow-on from ruclips.net/video/9EWPmvbIyYo/видео.html. Check out @testcams follow-up with a ...
What's going on in the shadows in video on the Nikon Z6III?

My Z6III is back but I've run into another problem 😅 This time it's tied to dynamic range and noise performance in video. If you have any thoughts or suggestions of how to fix this, please let me know in the comments. Keep in mind that RUclips's compression clobbers some of the noise. It should be most obvious at 4K, and I've included a zoomed-in example to hopefully offset that. I did also try...

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may День назад

      Yeah this video was shot on the Nikon Z6III. By default the Nikons don't seem to have any built-in noise reduction in video, which is interesting, but the Z6III had even more problems as documented in the previous two videos 😅 I did at least mostly resolve the flickering when editing at least, but cleaning up all the noise slows everything down a lot more unfortunately.

      Haha very rarely! I do sometimes shoot a landscape at 180mm at least. Sometimes use the midranges for birds in flight but even that’s not very common. A prime would probably make more sense but yeah the price difference is pretty significant!

    Just received my Z6lll and thankyou! Loved using it in the field today with your settings but problem with editing. Using a powerful 2020 Imac with Sonoma 14.5. The lossless compression RAW files won't display as thumbnails. I used Adobe DNG Converter as a workaround but it was a bit tedious. Any ideas or do we wait for Apple to put out the next OS update? Thanks again, Jeff

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 4 дня назад

      Aaah yes this is a pain in the arse! Unfortunately Apple’s Camera RAW continues to not support Nikon’s lossless compressed RAW format, and it’s been going on for years now 😞 I’m not sure why they still don’t support it. Right now the best options are to either use something like Lightroom/PhotoLab etc to browse the files, or shoot in the uncompressed RAW format instead, which works fine in MacOS.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 4 дня назад

      “Always bashing” == I’ve complained about Nikon’s matrix metering three times. If I don’t know how to expose then swapping cameras would hardly help now, would it? Only I don’t have the same problems on any of the other cameras I shoot, including older film Nikons or completely meterless cameras. Neither on the various modern cameras I’ve owned over the past few years. The matrix metering in modern Nikons seems to be quirky and works properly only in certain situations (it works fine for people at least), and Nikon won’t give you a medal for valiantly defending it online. Feel free to go check out any number of my well-exposed film photos on Glass.

  • @Buhis
    @Buhis 4 дня назад

    Thanks for the great tips! One handy option is to use the "S" instead of "M" for birds in flight (and still use Auto-ISO). With that you can still set the shutter speed as desired but you can use the front dial for easy Exposure Compensation (needs to be enabled from custom settings b3). At least in most cases I haven't had a need for changing the aperture, it can stay wide open.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 4 дня назад

      I usually keep it in M just because I find mode switching awkward on Nikon bodies by default (as it's always on the left of the camera) and I often swap the aperture, but yeah shooting in S is just as viable and it's really nice to have the easy aperture compensation option! 😀

    Just picked up a Z 6III this last week and it seems to be presenting the same issue. Unfortunately, I took it straight out onto a gig without doing much testing. I was eager to use it as a b-cam to my Z 8 since we were set to deliver the project to post in 4k N-RAW. Late in the day we were running out of time and needed to grab a locked down green screen plate for a quite shadowy scene. I didn't want to pull my Z 8 off the gimbal, so I snapped the Z 6III onto the tripod. That's when I noticed the flickering in the dark areas of the shot. I tried different exposure combinations and even exposing brighter and darker overall. I went through every menu setting I could think of as well, but nothing made it go away. Shooting at base ISO did seem to minimize the effect, but it was still very much apparent to me even on the small camera screen. I'm really hoping for a quick firmware fix as I had very high hopes for this camera. I may try to request an exchange from Adorama to see if it's luck of the draw, since some owners are not seeing this issue. Unfortunately, that would imply hardware issues and inconsistency, which won't be fixed through a firmware update.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 4 дня назад

      I'm coming around to the idea that it's all of them and some people just don't pick up on it easily, for whatever reason - I actually reported this to a larger publication recently and they were able to reproduce it quickly, but hadn't noticed it themselves beforehand. Hopefully Nikon can figure out a firmware fix of some description 🤞 The workarounds of applying specific types of noise reduction and deflicker in Davinci Resolve do at least largely fix it if you need to recover the footage (e.g. I had a bunch of shots in ruclips.net/video/qIJO0l3euXs/видео.html that needed to be repaired), but it's still a bit of a pain and slows down editing unfortunately.

    • @VikingMultimediaYT
      @VikingMultimediaYT 4 дня назад

      @@robert_may If I were editing/coloring myself, I’d be less concerned. But for the gig I just shot and for a lot of my work, we hand files off to client’s in-house editors… I think they’ll probably make a stink about having to do extra work to fix an issue with one of our cameras.

    Very interesting comparison, Robert. I saw another comparison here on RUclips of Alex Barrera between the Lumix 50mm f/1.8 and the Leica Summicron SL 50mm f/2 and he said that both lenses produce identical image quality. That means that the Sigma 50mm f/2 is the best of the three (for photography).

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 6 дней назад

      Ooh yeah - he has another video comparing that Leica and with the Sigma lens as well, and his conclusion is that the Sigma is the clear winner. I think the Leica might be a rebadged Panasonic due to how close his results are on the comparison with that. I've been really surprised by these Sigma I-series lenses as they're really, really good. If I get a chance before I send this 50mm back to Sigma I'd like to try a comparison against the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 S as that's also a very sharp lens, and I'd be curious to see how they stack up against each other 😀

    I still think there might be some settings involved, like anti-moire/anti-flicker or auto exposure/white balance. Does it apply any lens distortion or vignette compensations to nRaw? I’m also wondering if the 25fps is leading to some timing effects where it’s clashing with the timing the camera was mostly designed around, leading to some frames getting slightly less electrons, which becomes very apparent in the shadows at these high ISOs where we’re already talking about very few electrons.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 8 дней назад

      I saw an anti-moire setting mentioned but I couldn't find it anywhere in the camera. I tried every other setting as far as I could remember, including different combinations of things. I believe lens corrections aren't applied to NRAW, but I might be mistaken. Yeah I've been wondering about the effect of different framerates, but I believe it is visible in all of them. If we're talking about electrical frequencies too, it would be a bit weird for a Japanese-made camera to be targeted towards 60hz regions, as bizarrely they use both 50hz and 60hz circuits in their country 🤔

    This was interesting, thank you. I got my Z6 III a few days ago and it would appear that mine has the same behavior? I've posted an example here: ruclips.net/video/tjsnAuF9Kgk/видео.html I'm not really a tech head, but I'm tempted to contact Nikon and see what they have to say about it.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 10 дней назад

      That's interesting - I can just about make it out on your footage but it's significantly more subtle than on mine 🤔 Might be down to the scene being a fairly narrow dynamic range, or variances in the cameras. I've seen a few clips from others now and mine seems to have been the worst so far. I haven't contacted Nikon myself yet as their response time would have been outside my return window, but that could be worthwhile if they're not aware of the issue. You can at least largely alleviate the problem in Davinci Resolve by applying the Deflicker effect to the clips - it's intended for timelapses but it works pretty well for resolving this too.

      @@robert_may I've just now flung them a support request after registering the camera with them - their website indicated 24-48 hours for a response, so I'll keep an eye out. And yeah, I did notice it is lesser of an issue than yours - but still there. I'm trying it out a little more right now, just for the sake of comparrison! :)

    and it's even worse when you live in a very low income environment like me, and I've been saving money for two years to buy Fuji X-T3, bought in 2020, but at first there was a flex cable of shutter button defect, thankfully covered by warranty but after warrant repair there was like a scratch mark on sensor and I was terrified, but it was just a smudge from official repair service lol then rear command dial broke

    • @robert_may

      Aw man that sucks, especially as I assume there's a longer turnaround for repairs for you. The X-T3 is a great camera though (when it isn't in need of repair) - my dad uses his all the time. I hope you were able to get the dial repaired too. Since I made this video I've also had an Atomos Ninja V recorder completely die on me 😭 Maybe we need exorcisms 🙈

    Why do people buy anything else than Sony for video. Sony MAKES the sensors lol. Why buy ripoff shit like this and then compare it?

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may 10 дней назад

      Well Sony isn't perfect - their image stabilisation is still quite far behind other manufacturers, which is why I've been using an S5IIX instead of something like the A7IV. But this also oversimplifies camera manufacture, as a) Sony's sensor division is effectively separate from the camera division, b) Nikon spec and design the sensors with Sony, and c) I'm pretty sure Sony actually use Nikon lithography machines to make the sensors in the first place.

    Hey Robert, it sucks that you’re facing this problem. A subscriber led me to your video. I will try to replicate this and see if I find the same problem. One basic rule that I follow with any log is over expose everything just below the limit (using waveform) and then bring shadows down in post instead of boosting shadows up. Also, I ignore Nikon’s log view assist. It will force one to underexpose.

    • @robert_may

      Huh my comment on this disappeared for some reason 🤔 I'll be interested to see if you find the same problem! On mine it also happens in HLG and it's visible in any type of exposure - the flickering appears to be a constant underneath, it's just most visible when bringing up the shadows. It doesn't appear to be at the same level on other examples I've seen though, so it looks like it's limited to only some copies.

    I believe this issue and the low dynamic range complaints all have to do with the new sensor tech hybrid stacked. Ill bet anything in the next 60 days we see some type of firmware fix on voltage paths for the chip. Or maybe a complete recall as maybe its straight up power failure. BUT I LOVE MY z6III

    After hearing about this issue you are having and seeing your other video as well, I spent the afternoon today doing some very rigorous testing of my Z6III as well as my Z8 and a Z6II with a Blackmagic Video Assist on my Z6II which enables BRAW recording. I am not able to reproduce your findings at all. I performed the experiment you describe here and I am not seeing any issue with abnormal flickering. I also shot a lot of NRAW clips comparing the Z6III and the Z8 under identical controlled conditions with some serious underexposure, pulled back to a normal exposure in the raw tab of DaVinci Resolve. Of course I am seeing noise and lots of flickering in the shadows but that is normal for raw video when there is no in-camera noise reduction applied. I have no way of easily quantifying the noise but qualitatively the levels of noise and flicker are similar between the Z6III and the Z8. I have to conclude that your specific copy of the Z6III is faulty and that it is not a general fault with the sensor (similarly with other reports here of excessive flicker).

      I’m also wondering if the 25fps is leading to some timing effects where it’s clashing with the timing the camera was mostly designed around, leading to some frames getting slightly less electrons, which becomes very apparent in the shadows at these high ISOs where we’re already talking about very few electrons. Thanks for the video. Darn! Even though I am a Panasonic shooter, I was REALLY hoping that the Z6 III would be a good replacement camera (internal N-RAW, 4K 60p in full frame, ability to adapt F Mount lenses, etc.,). Well, after seeing the various tests on dynamic range and low-light noise, I eneded up getting an S5 IIX and a lens bundle, since the price was pretty amazing. Definitely not my first choice (despite it being compatible with my other lenses and bodies), but the nearest competitors all had flaws that were deal breakers FOR ME. If somehow Nikon can fix that issue in the nexr couple of weeks (before my return window closes), then I might still grabe a Z6 III.

      The S5IIX isn't perfect but it is a damn good video camera and there's a lot to like about it, not least the price 😄 Hopefully this isn't a universal issue with the Z6III or it's just a small batch of cameras suffering from the problem.

    First, don’t use the lut. Or use it differently. Second, check the exposure. I suspect these comparisons aren’t shot at the same exposure. Third, don’t shoot where you need to raise the exposure. Fourth, don’t shoot in log. Use Nikon’s d lighting to boost the shadows.

    I agree with you. I've done numerous tests with the z6 iii, the z8 & the s52x/s1h I came to the conclusion that the nikon's 4k image isn't the cleanest especially in nlog in h265 with block like noise. The higher the resolution the better for the Nikon. The 5k modes on the z6 help with the block like noise

      @@watzmaaname dynamic range wise, the Lumix cameras have a stop extra without noise reduction for sure. Image wise, they hold up very similar. The z8 in raw 8k or 4.1k is hair more flexible than the Lumix. However in the compressed h265 codecs the Lumix have better image quality, I guess it's the noise reduction in camera Nikon has.
