For nature and landscape the FPL is absolutely perfect. Use it with grip and EVF. The sensor is wonderful and the images have a special look that I love so much!

Lovely review on the fp L, well spoken and thought out, no fluff, very very refreshing indeed .
I've had mine fp L for 9 months now, and while it took me a few months to adapt to (always shot big Nikon bodies, with big lenses and still do, along with Pentax 645 MF system) but it's the size of this is it's true selling point, added it's 61mp sensor it's hard to beat., while being totally unique.
It's little niggles like slow processing of files and at times fiddly system are small trade off.
My major gripe and what you pointed out was the lack of mechanical shutter, this poses a few small issues esp when shooting in artificial lights, you really need to watch your shutter speed to off set banding... Again, a small trade of imo
    I love this camera
Lovely shots you're added to your video also. Splendid review

Thanks very much! 😀 And yeah agreed on its shortcomings. I think it’s just a really interesting and unique camera, and that’s quite rare these days. I’m really curious to see where they go with it next!

However challenging, the image quality and colour science from the fp cameras is very hard to beat

I enjoyed the review. I've thought about picking up a used fp-L. I have two fp's now, and I like them very much. As you said, a likeable camera. The fp (like the S2-series) has great low-light capability. What's put me off is the low-pass filter on the fp-L (but not the fp). I would probably spring for a fp-M (monochrome 61mp sensor) if they offered it. L-mount is also very easy to get adapters to re-use your older lenses (in my case Pentax 645), but I always come back to modern Sigma Art and Contemporary lenses.

Ooh an fp M is a fun idea - I'd like to see more manufacturers offer monochrome editions of cameras (I'm really surprised there isn't a Ricoh GRIII monochrome actually).

Foveon is probably a lot better landscape camera, its just a shame about the mount though, they really need a Foveon with L mount, and higher quality eVF so we can actually see where to focus.

I'm looking forward to the eventual next iteration of Foveon sensors. Probably still a way off but they really do offer something a bit different.

This is why I like Sigma products - they are not afraid of implementing bold ideas.

The first Sigma camera I ever saw was the SD-14 and I thought it was really cool back in 2007 😆 The easily removable IR filter was a particularly cool little feature.

@@robert_may ohh, you target the flagships. I am pretty sure, you'd take brill pics with sd1. The lenses would be a challenge but there's eBay. Good luck with this one and if you do get it, a nostalgia video would be warmly welcome!

61 MPs is good, depending on the sensor really. I only have Nikon lenses, f and Z mount so would probably get a used Z7ii which is relatively small and lightweight with superb 45MP raw files.

    • @robert_may
      @robert_may  Месяц назад +1

Z7II makes a lot of sense for a landscape camera! It’ll be interesting to see whether they bring out a Z7III at a higher resolution - having a lightweight high resolution body in the lineup is great for landscape photographers 😀

@@robert_may Exactly, with advancing age I sometimes take my Z6ii if its going to be a long day with the 24-120 f4S. Lightweight and great quality but I do prefer more MPs for landscape.

The tilt screen mod I've seen going around looks really swish: ruclips.net/video/qrynmJr1qBI/видео.html. No low pass filter would be nice - it's a shame that Sigma couldn't port over their cool removable filters idea from their older Foveon cameras. Would be an interesting thing to bring back!
