No, you're certainly not alone when it comes to your views on ads, Robert. In fact, I think you're the first person (at least on YT) expressing the exact same view that I have had for years. Ads, for me, is a sure way to be able to AVOID companies, products, and services - you subject me to your (godawful and mindnumbing) ads and I promise you never to go near whatever you're offering. I understand the basic economics of advertising, but I don't think I'll ever really understand WHY it obviously is so profitable. Are people really that gullible? Having said that I'll most certainly check out Glass. Thanks! 👍
Yes, the adverts, while I understand that everyone needs to make a living, the greed expressed though advertising, where our personal data is one of the most valuable commodities, simply sucks. I actually mostly watch my You-Tube subscriptions on my laptop through Firefox, zero ads, even signed into my You-Tube account so it's in history etc..
Really enjoyed this video. I was unaware of Glass, so will check it out. Just come off Instagram myself - deleted everything. So far no regrets, but there's always that fear of missing out doubt that creeps in. As a photographer the lack of features on Instagram that help present your work in a nice clean and organic way, I think was the eventual deal breaker for me. The cropping of images, or having to add borders just to show your work as you intended. Just utterly tedious. And don't get me started on the whole algorithm thing. Subbed btw :)
Agree with you on advertising. The whole modus operandi for pay TV was to avoid adverts. Now pay TV has adverts. Why? Because it makes money. Now we pay for our adverts. Marvelous.
We were taught advertising and the different types in school and like you it doesn’t work on me. As you said it has quite the opposite effect. If I’m inundated with a company, I’ll find an alternative.
Hi Robert - only just found your channel - love your ‘low key’ style - considering getting a Fuji XH2s (have an XT5) but your and other reviews starting to cause some concerns - same as you - I miss the earlier - less commercial Internet - but that’s progress I assume 😢 - will definitely give Glass a try
Welcome! 😀 I haven’t heard of many others having my set of problems with the X-H2S, so I think it might just have been me 🙈 My dad has one and really enjoys using it alongside his X-T3. There’s a lot to like about the X-H2S, especially if you already enjoy the Fujifilm system as a whole.
I saw your one photo of Tenby harbor. Reminds me of my trip there in 1988 😊. We stayed at a BnB there and my mom bought a Corgi and named it Tenby. It would be fun to go back some day.
I've lived in Wales half my life and only went to Tenby for the first time this year 😅 It was great! Easily my favourite seaside town in the UK now (providing you visit outside the school holidays), and it was remarkably open - I spent a day just wandering around in the harbour and surrounding areas, and I don't think I've been anywhere else that lets you do that. I'll probably go back and film a video there at some point because it'd make a great location for it. And Tenby is a great name for a Corgi! 😆
@@robert_may Thanks. A video from there sounds interesting as I'll admit I have forgotten what the place looks like as it has been over 30 years since I was there. I do remember that I liked it there 🙂
Haha, quite right Robert. I really dislike Instagram and Facebook in particular. The communities you are talking about have mostly disappeared, not entirely but we have to pay nowadays. I used to belong to sites like Nikon Gear and upload images there, have competitions and critique etc plus top level technical advice but there doesn't seem to be too many similar places about. I'll have a look at the site you suggest, thanks. I have never posted on Instagram and try to stay away from all Zuckerberg apps if possible. 😊
Yeah I ended up quitting all the social sites bar RUclips over the past few years - it's a shame that so many of the small communities and forums got killed off by places like Reddit, Twitter, or Instagram. There's this weird propensity for people to gravitate towards the centralised platforms for communities now; I've noticed lots of RUclipsrs having their own Discord channels, but that's no better than anything else as that's yet another centralised service. It is easier for most people, I guess. I know a part of it is almost certainly rose-tinted glasses, and I do _not_ miss 56k modem speeds at least, but I do miss all those small forums/boards and the dorky websites with scrolling text and midi files playing in the background 😆
Another issue is posts not appearing. I responded earlier agreeing with your point, and despite there being no profanity, insults or illegal content, the post did not appear. It's creepy, and no doubt meant to be, but that's the internet for you.
The most important dimension of advertising is its definition of the market. When you see an ad ask yourself who is being groomed? For example gold, home or auto warranties imply paranoia. Cosmetics, weight loss imply narcissism. Have some fun with ads by deconstructing them. Which characteristics are being appealed to? Then ask yourself a simple question. "Is that my market segment?" Chances are the answer will be a simple no. Then you can chuckle and move on, the ad having provided a little entertainment.
Left Deviant Art when I realized non-members coming to my page were blasted with ads. Have dropped a number of "services" due to advertising. RUclips and Google may be next if they continue to shoehorn ads everywhere.
I've been bombarded by advertising for so long that I've become totally immune to it. Anyway, I'm off for a refreshing glass of ice-cold Coke, it's the real thing.
Why is no one in the comments talking about Cara? Set up by a photographer, free to use, free of ads, free of algorithms, and has just seen a massive uptick in subscribers by graphic artists migrating from Instagram. The developers want photographers to follow suit.
@@robert_may it's worth reading about the story behind Zhang Jinga, the owner. She took a painter to court who stole/replicated one of her photographs that appeared in a magazine. Initially it was thrown out but she appealed and won. Cara utilises a copyright engine that's designed to prevent image theft. Most recently graphic designers have signed up in their droves so the majority of the current work is design-based, but there are a few photographers on there and, like I say, Jinga is keen for other photographers to join, especially as she's a photographer herself.
They certainly could try harder if they want to attract photographers. There wasn’t a single photo on the main page and when I finally found some, after filtering for art type, most of it was really cringey and bad. For now the site seems mostly like a Deviantart knock off.
Just took a look and signed up, it does seem to be more graphic arts than photography however, but will investigate as a few good monochrome images came up in an initial search
Shoutout for Prague 2020, hello from a fellow nerd. Never signed up for instagram. Earlyvon, it doesn’t sound like it would have worked well for photos off a non phone camera, and by the time it did work, it was probably 💩already. I have your Glass bookmarked … partly to remind me to sign up, once I have time to get my photos off the SD card and do something with them.
The trip that never was 😭 I go through cycles of deleting Instagram accounts as it's inevitably the only place used by photographers I meet and I feel bad that I can't follow them. I usually last about 2 months until I can't stand it any more and delete it again 😆
Haha it makes sense in my head 😆 I basically don't mind it if I purposely choose to watch something that is effectively marketing (like reviews, or email marketing which I can just unsubscribe from) - I just don't like being forced to see marketing when I was trying to look at something else 😤
I can hear this man for hours...

You're bang on the money here Robert. I refuse to use any Social Media anymore for the exact same reasons.

You have a great voiceover voice. Do you do any audible book reads?
Haha not currently. Maybe a podcast sometime in the future!
Miss your wit Robert. Brought an unexpected emotion to my mind seeing you wear that GL sweater. Hope you're doing well.
The hoodie for the trip that never was 😭 Haha I'm good thanks! Do hit me up if you ever wanna chat 😀

Ohh weird, I have that happen on RUclips sometimes too. I think it’s something tied to the filtering but I’ve never figured out exactly what it is 🤔

Glass sounded promising.... But your browsing is only limited for a short time as a non subscriber, so for me Flickr remains my chosen option.
Oh I didn’t realise that 🤔 Flickr is still a great option at least!
Try VERO
I wanted to mention Vero too, and it is free at the moment to join.
I actually did use VERO for a while but for whatever reason fell out of the habit 🤔 It did seem decent though!
@@robert_may too many platforms , not enough time :)
Ads , tax deductible. I ignore them. have no influence on me.
