Her R already sounds like an approximant, she just does it extra which I think they could've done the trilled R and then make Glinda say the approximant one is more "popular".

​@@Yuri-ib3ej Not sure if you're Dutch or not (if you are I guess this is for those who read along), but while I agree that the original r is already quite Randstedelijk, maybe from Haarlem, the Gooische R is (as a caricature) much more intense. So Ive always liked how it mainly exaggerates in this song, also in the stage version done by Chantal Janzen. As if you have to go to the extreme to actually sound like youre part of the elite or posh. Het Gooi (the region) is known for wealth, almost like the Hamptons without it being for vacationing. It does sound like youre using linguistic terminology, which Im not familiar with so no clue if im properly responding to you. The thrilled r is not used loads in the Netherlands and definitely not at the end of the word, so it would sound 'put on' when the intent of the joke is to make it sound like the second version (Gooise version) is put on. 3 min

@@willem9538 thanks for the cultural background, but it's just in Chantal's version it made sense because her R at the end of a syllable was a uvular trill (you can look up the terminology), and she changed it to a Gooische R during the joke, which is an approximant like the American English R. But in this version her R is already an approximant, and she just overexaggerates her enunciation which doesn't make as much sense as the play version.

@willem9538 later today I'll post the missing songs ;) Is the lip-sync bad? I honestly don't mind (I'd rather have the songs just sound good, even with poor lip sync) but I can see how that can be distracting

@@TOTO-5 Dubbing is rarely done in the Netherlands, as it used to be too expensive to do, so Dutchies are used to subtitles and dubbing isn't something we're skilled at, plus it therefore also grinds our gears. However, I didn't see the dubbed version (it's really aimed at children as they can't read that fast yet nor do they speak English. Adults don't go see dubbed version) so no clue if it was well done in this case.

@lukeasever oh but I LOVE Vajèn's take on Moana and even more her Mirabel! But we both agree that this is her best role ever! She slipped into the character perfectly (maybe 'cause her voice fits Ariana better, as you said)

@@TOTO-5 Yes luckily someone is slowly uploading the Brazilian Portuguese full version songs. I know the character isn't very well liked (Don't she she has ever been) but don't just cut the song. The sad part is I can listen to any song from the soundtrack in any language and know instantly if a part is cut. It's a problem by this point LOL.

@OnlyAtWaterlooRoad yeah I've seen that. I agree, anyone who knows the plot of Act 2 dislikes Nessa, but the song is incomplete this way! Also, I wouldn't call it sad or a problem, I'd say it's being committed XD

Couldn't agree more. I'm not sure if she has a stage career but I can absolutely see her reprising her role in a live production.

I think they changed it so the dubbing would match the mouths better. Could also be the retain some of the meaning of the English lyrics more literally, as the original Dutch one took quite some liberties.

dutch dubbing usually has word changes and sometimes even entirely different meanings to lyrics

@anonymousofwonderland4850 I have at last! It was more amazing than I could possibly imagine, and my expectations were already miles high... definitely go see it as soon as you can! Not all dubs are easy to come around now, but every one I've heard cast Elphaba perfectly! My jaw dropped when I heard Monika in the Slovak dub! I even liked Myra in the Brazilian dub, do you find her not fitting or powerful enough? I didn't like Fabi's Glinda, that's for sure :( it's too obvious her voice would never come out of Ariana's mouth, which is sad to admit because she's my favorite on-stage Glinda. On the other hand Ceci really camouflaged her voice in the Mexican dub!

You must have the European and Latin Spanish versions mixed up: -Mirela (EU Spanish Elphaba) played Ariel last year -Danna, as you said, played Rapunzel And both Ceci and Danna played Ginda and Elphaba in the Mexican production (with Danna only being 18 at the time, if I recall correctly!)

I've decided I'll hold back from looking at any version (including the English one) until I see the movie next week, but getting the Polish songs notifications really tried me LOL I need to listen to Edyta! Unfortunately, I've also seen some snippets of Popular in Italian on TikTok and the lyrics are so hilariously horrible that I'm going to pretend that the dub doesn't exist 😭

@TOTO-5 🥹 Edyta is great - I was afraid she would sound too old but it's not bad! I was also worried about the Polish translation of "Popular", but I guess it's not that bad, instead of (you're gonna be) "pop-uuular", it's (mieć to) "c-oooś" [you will have that "something"] but despite the change of this important vowel it sounds quite melodic :D Oh, is it really that bad? 😭 Can you give me the links (or name of the account) where these snippets are?

@anonymousofwonderland4850 thank you, I used RUclips's automatic translation on the lyrics and could not figure out what the title meant! It's so original, can't wait to hear it in full! All right, the full song was posted by arianaeqs on TikTok. I've only listened to the chorus and there's so many extra syllabes: "popolare" could have been easily truncated as "popolar" but our lyricist never does that for some reason (but TBH I would have preferred a different word). Then there's some really odd word choices like "padroneggia sport e arte del dialogo" ("master sports and rhetorical art"??? why the hell would she be singing so formally?) It sounds like they put the lyrics through Google Translate😭 The same account also posted other songs (which according to some people have decent lyrics) but I'm gonna wait!

In general, extra syllables have always irritated me - but I can't hide the fact that Italian voices are really wonderful 🥹 I also don't understand the lyricist's decision at all, in the Polish version I also noticed a few overly formal lines, but not that much :') I will also be waiting for the rest of the songs in Italian (and other languages!) Btw it's so strange that Margherita doesn't sing songs 🤔 And I'm so glad Simona is in the cast!
