Thank you for sharing. I have a Z5 with the 28, 40 , 14-30 and some manual lens. The combo is really good in terms of image quality, and high ISO is not a problem because of Pure Raw. I want to buy a ZF recently because it is difficult for the Z5 to focus in low light. However, the ZF does not have a Accessory terminal for shutter. This makes me lose a lot of fun taking selfies :( Does anyone own both Z5 and ZF?
I’ve never used the accessory terminal on the Z5 myself, the Zf definitely does feel more like a classic camera. Thanks for watching!
But now z 35 mm f 1.4 😅
Still the f1.8S for me! Made a follow up video about the f1.4
Thanks Jack, great video, very informative. I just bought the Zf on special in Aus and will soon be in Japan looking for Zf goodies as well. I'm hearing the Voigtlander VM-Z close focus adaptor is also good (Samuel Streetlife) but price is a bit steep.
I haven’t tried the Voigtlander one! Hopefully Map camera in Shinjuku will let you test one out, seem to have a few review units floating around. Have a blast in Japan, I just came back and missing it already
Wow what a beautifully narrated video, next level stuff! I just picked up the 50mm version in the same series used to go on my a7iv as a lightweight setup. I've spent too much timing analyzing, contemplating, planning, which has led to too much gear acquisition. Now I just need to get out and shoot!
The 50mm is a beautiful lens too - thanks so much for watching, happy shooting!
Great video very useful!!!what about the performance in high iso video compared to z6ii?is there a lot of visible difference?
I don’t have the Z6ii, I suspect high ISO noise will be quite similar on the Z6iii though. Don’t think the Z6ii has 10bit video internal, so the image might degrade earlier if you’re shooting N-log?
@@BokehTherapy z6ii only 8bit need an atomos external recorder
Ah sure, so noise won’t be much different, more the color grading latitude. If you get the look right in camera on the Z6ii though it still has fantastic video IQ
Thank you very much 🙏. I believe improvements will come in the future with an n-log2 and more...
sorry -- pure bullshit. Nobody is thousands of dollars richer , but just less poor !
Um, of course? Nobody is rich if we’re into cameras lol.
One thing nobody mentions is that retro cameras hold their value better.
For sure! Nikon DF is still going for $1500 10 years after its release
has anyone tried the Neewer FE to Z adapter with an E mount version of this lens? Seems like you might be able to get focus confirmation plus a very snug fit.
I think this should work but haven’t tested it myself. Would love some feedback too!
@@BokehTherapy I guess the advantage of going the TT Artisan to M mount route is that if a person ever gets a Leica they'll already have some lenses for it :)
lol yup that will offset the cost of a M body, might as well be a done deal
Oh and honestly the enjoyment of using a camera that you feel One with is the point of getting into and Feeling like a photographer not a simple phone tapper. How much does your camera give you that feeling of oh I want to go and get some pictures today? I’ve only had 3 cameras that made me feel like that and my first Nikon is one of those. It’s so good and capable that it inspires confidence and lets me focus more on having fun and allows me to really explore my surroundings
Funnily enough I have gone back to try some DSLRs - they give me that analogue feeling while being digital more than a lot of mirrorless cameras. What was your first Nikon?
@BokehTherapy the 3 cameras that made me want to go on photo adventures were my 2012 Olympus EM5 , my 2015 Fuji X30 and almost 10 years later my first Nikon the Z50 mark2. My favorite Dslr was my Pentax that remains in the Philippines as a gift. And of course Pentax invented the pentaprism. For a strictly photo camera the Pentax was my favorite and honestly you have to try one to understand. My new/first Nikon constantly amazes me. I am loosing my vision in my dominant eye and it never lets me down plus the video from this mid size camera is phenomenal ànd I'll say I like it every bit as much as my FF Lumix does. The ZF looks a lot like my Fuji did but the Nikon ZF is more premium looking and feeling in the hand and if the processor works as well as on my Z 50 then hopefully I can sell my Lumix and get a ZF as my full frame. I'm going to sub you now as you have impressed me. Thanks a lot and take care.
I bought the 21mp Nikon Z50 M2 and absolutely love it, the autofocus sticks like Velcro even on a bird’s eye and If I can sell my Brand new this year LUMIX S5 M2 that I’ve already sent for repair then I will absolutely get the ZF or Z6 M3. I was told by a camera repair man Nikon was the most reliable and sure as hades I didn’t listen and my first full frame was already sent for repair. Only Nikon from now on
Sad to hear about your LUMIX - my Nikons are still going strong so fingers crossed!
for me is the sony 35 1.8. a bit wider and a bit more better aperture for low light situations. and cheaper (bought it with 400 euro)
It’s a great lens too!
I am liking the Z5 + 40mm lens for the street. Rarely does one need to shoot wide-open, and at f5.6 it is great. If I am wanting the sharper lens, I will go the 50mm f1.8s, which is not terribly long or heavy, but still makes me question the need for doing street photography. The street is for story, and overly sharp is really of no need for portraits as well. I mean to say the 50mm is pretty close to perfection, but I am liking the 40mm focal length on the street, and the lighter and shorter lens to carry. I only use a wrist strap. Maybe I should add the Peaks Design should strap as an option when taking the 50mm out for over an hour??? As for right or wrong, there is none, as people have their own style of shooting. In regard to quality, most every lens these days renders images in digital on par or better than the old film days. I guess a Sony kit lens could be an exception 🙄. Oh boy, now I pissed-off the Sony people. Nah, Sony has mostly great lenses, aside of some kits.
All great points! I’m finding more flawed lenses to be interesting, but only if the price is right haha. Thanks for watching
Under the "Brisbane" sun.... very different light to Melbourne.... Amazing work under such harsh light conditions!
Thanks! Love Melbourne for street work, but Brisbane has its own charm despite the harsh light haha
wow , what a pleasure to watch! I just added the Zf to my kit... for event photography I run it with a Z8, Z 24-70 2.8 S, Z 70-200 2.8 S and Z 50 1.8 S. So that is the work kit... but then for more casual photography for myself, I was contemplating on adding the 40mm f2 with the 28mm 2.8. My big conundrum is that if I buy the 35 1.8 S, I can use that as a walk about, and in my professional kit, where the 28 2.8 + 40 2 would only be used to 'muck' around :) The look of the 28 & 40 SE + the size is what pulls me, but the IQ and inter-compatibility on my Z8 of the 35 is what stops me from making an immediate decision. If you have any thoughts, you are welcome to share ;)
I have grown to love the 35mm f1.8 S - it is mostly what I used on a recent trip. I think it makes sense for both professional and casual use, and it’s one less lens than the 40 and 28 combo so less decisions to make when you go out shooting. Depends on how much time you have to muck around!
@BokehTherapy ... I resonate with your resolve :D Thanks for taking the time to share your experience. I truly appreciate it
@@Fritzystuff no problems! Haha I do love the 40mm, keeping a minimal kit is a constant struggle
I thought I was here for a simple bag review and you ended up providing so much more - thanks Jack! 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching!
Leica makes f1.8 lenses that are better than their f1.4 lenses. Great video.
So does Nikon too! It’s an interesting paradigm for consumers to choose from
Someone made a video (much different than yours) on the 40mm and Sony rig being the "Leica Killer" - which stuck with me. Love the 40, but I also love my 35mm f1.8 and my 28-70mm f2.8 by Sigma. Nice work weaving together myriad strands for this gorgeous video.
I hope Sony updates its f1.8 lineup of primes next with the same styling as the 40mm. Thanks for watching!
Another cracking video, Jack. Thanks for producing the great content as always!
Thanks Tex, lovely to hear from you as always!
ZF > Z6III i am just speaking as a hobby guy, but the ZF just has more the joy to use, then the clinical Z6III. So i will pick it more often. But i feel also then trend on motorcylcles, i have two, a modern and a old one, yea the modern is nice and does everything good, but its just clinical and cold. Would pick also a Triumph Bobber over a Yamaha R1. And to close the circle, the bobber is like the zf, old styled camera, but new tech.
Glad I’m not the only one - for me it’s the Zf everytime!
@@BokehTherapy ZF is love, If you only have one Prime Lens on the ZF, which would it be? 40mm f2? A Voigtländer? or? :D
Mmm that is a really hard choice, but as I found out on my most recent trip it’s the 35mm f1.8S. Form factor is not too front heavy and I love its IQ
Watched the video but not sure I saw your conclusion. Was your conclusion that the TTArtisan the best adapter for F to Z?
Neewer is better than TTartisan for vignetting when it comes to F to E then E to Z. Thanks for watching!
Great images , beautiful lens 😊
Thank you Michael, the Plena is something special!
@ tried 85 f1.2 and Plena yesterday, spoilt for choice . Plena great for outdoor fashion I guess.
Curious if you’ve tried the Leofoto grip?
No I haven’t! This list grows bigger everyday
@ Yes it does. Love your channel, your content is so great. The Leofoto I asked about isn’t available in the US. What’s unique about it is on the base plate it’s got a little stub at the end that allows you to use it as an L bracket (without being a full up the entire side of the camera L bracket so less bulky).
I don’t shoot much in portrait orientation so a baseplate is usually enough for me. L bracket designs have to be pretty spot on to match all the tripod ball head designs out there. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I just got the TTartisan 75mm last week. It’s excellent on my Z6.
Nice!
Obviously the Z6III! There's no doubt!! D.
An amazing camera!
Hi Jack, I have all the same adapters you use and found all the same features and issues😅. But thanks for mentioning the dark corners with the TT Artisan M-Z corner. I just made a first test walk with the Leica R 35mm f/2 and found the heavy vignette and also that the focus is not aligned properly. Infiniti is around 3-5m on the lens scale. Think these are all the same issues to the same reason of slightly off flange distance.
Hello! Yes adapting lenses is an imperfect solution, hope the first party adapters become more of a thing. They can charge a premium if they want, beats having to test all of these adapters ourselves
"Because in Japan even the mundane has beauty" ... This is so true <3
Back in Japan right now and it’s true as ever!
This is a great video! Just like all your other videos :) I recently got a Zf and absolutely love it, coming from a Ricoh GR III, I feel like the 40F2 complements my Ricoh's 28mm for street photography (only the Autofocus is on a whole other level on the Zf). I'm curious to know if you have the Nikkor 24-70 2.8? I'm looking into it for the future, to kinda replace potentially buying all those 1.8 primes 😅
I have tested but don’t own the 24-70 2.8. It is a beautiful lens but I don’t need zooms for my workflow? If you are a zoom shooter it indeed makes things a lot more convenient. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
I didn't understand if this is a video about photographic equipment, or a Japanese lesson. An unsuccessful mix.
Not every video is a winner - trying something different. Thanks for watching anyway
Might be a comprehension problem, and not a video production problem. Pretty sure it's obvious which is the real issue, as there's no likes on your comment, and I didn't have any issue, and typically it's a less educated and simple mind that can't process that reality happens on many simultaneous layers....so it was actually a creatively intelligent effort to intermingle sponsorship agenda into the walk around Japan searching for lenses in a country that gasp....speaks Japanese and anyone that would visit as a non-Japanese person would easily benefit from some basic linguistic assistance.
When I first upgraded to the A1 i also felt the pressure of trying to do it “justice” After a few years of using it, it’s just another camera.
Haha yup and the A1 ii is also now just another camera. Seems like a modest upgrade
This is my favorite lens after trying all options on Sony e-mount.
Mine too!
Is that man Steve M? I use Sony lenses my Zf.
Haha yup. Was wondering who would figure it out first. Megadap is great for Sony lenses on Zf
@ I know him and his wife. Kind and generous man. I bought the Megadap a week ago.
Big fan of Steve M!
Hi Jack. Camera manufacturers not having finger print sensors or number pads for pincodes is a big bug bear of mine, grrrrr.
Yes!! We are totally vulnerable, and it’s very easy to implement. Fingerprint sensors for phones are very cheap, can hide it behind the LCD screen
Leica is overated
Haha yup, over priced for sure.
Hi Jack, this is fantastic! Frankly, I had no idea about the possibilities with the adapters. I just assumed quite a bit of the FTZ and figured that any anomalies were due to the focal length or defects of the lens or the focus system itself. I also am impressed with your Japanese. I got a linguistics degree and after graduate school, I got a stipend to teach in Osaka, which never happened (long story), but it's my life long dream to travel to Japan and that dream is not too far away. I hope your trip is/was amazing!! Great video as always. Thanks so much.
Ohhh we are in Osaka now - hope you make it here one day. Hope all this adapter testing is useful, I didn’t realise quite how complicated it would be haha
@@BokehTherapy Yes, I cannot wait to go...enjoy your time! You did an amazing job with the adapter video 😀
Wow - I cannot express properly how I enjoyed what I just watched! Emotions of joy, sadness, love and determination comes to mind. Should I cry or should I jump for joy, should I move with inspiration or should I bask in quietness and thought, should I be or should I change what is to be, should I live or should I die to myself, shall I start again?
Wow thanks so much! I tend to pack too much into my videos, glad this one resonated with you. More to come!
@BokehTherapy absolutely amazing. I'll be watching 😊
I have numerous M39/M42, M and Nikon F mount manual focus lenses adapted to my Nikon Z6 using Pholsy adapters. I prefer these lenses to the modern Nikon Z lenses. Of the 50’s I have Nikon 50mm 1.2 Ai-S, Nikon 50mm 1.4, Voigtlander 50mm 1.4 Heliar, Helios 44/44-2 and Jupiter 8. Of these the most unique are the Heliar lens which is an interesting portrait lens that’s extremely soft wide open, but sharpens up by f4, and the Helios lenses with their swirly bokeh in the right conditions. TTArtisan recently released their 75mm F1.5 Swirly Bokeh lens in M42 mount which is similar to the Helios. All these are copies of the pre war Zeiss Biotar lens. If you have an interest in vintage lenses these are also interesting to try.
Lots of great suggestions! Thanks for all the tips, sounds like a lot of fun
I think you are just gilding the lily (the vintage glass). It is rubbish. I had it years ago and settled for the 1.8D lens.
Haha well one man’s trash is another’s treasure.
Love the content!
Thank you Darryl!
if youre looking for vintage lens ang film camera 2ndbase in akihabara is the best option also fujiya camera at nakano there is also that open recently in yokohama station only forgot the store name but it was also a vintage camera shop
Fujiya camera was awesome - thanks for the other tips!!
I recently purchased a 50mmf1.8 AIS pancake for my Nikon dslr recently and loving it. Hopefully can buy a few more focal lengths soon and a zf too 😅I wish Nikon kept the same mount and just called their new lenses FZ
I think the optical quality they squeezed out of Z mount is what makes them competitive currently. I think they kept F-mount for as long as they could!
@ true that shame they cant or havent made a slim line adaptor as you say.
@@jimpap13 hope they hear the feedback. They have too many old school lenses that are worth the effort to adapt
@ 100% percent mate and in a sustainable world we’re in it makes sense
Nikon may not. But surely we can hope for a 3rd party f to z adapter that does tick all the boxes?
Maybe if there is enough demand!
Great video, thanks. I'm also in search of my perfect/fast 50, and I don't like adapters. I don't do street, I do beauty/people, and to me the Z 50/1.8 looks to clinical. So I chose the Z 50/1.4 for AF-convenience and the Z-mount Voigtländer Nokton 50/1.0 for the vintage-look (this lens was even the reason for me to get the Zf). But I'm still yearning for the AF-S 58/1.4 G's look natively on the Z-mount - 58 to me is a better "natural-looking" focal-length than 50, and Idiot-me never should have sold the 58, just because I did not like the FTZ-I.
I just bought the AF-S 58mm f1.f G - it is a fantastic lens with loads of character and a very distinct look. It is very expensive though - Nikon should remake it in native Z mount!
@@BokehTherapy yes, I'm constantly monitoring my local 2nd hand sites to see, if they have a reasonably priced one, which I can inspect and maybe buy.
And what about the Shoten?
Shoten is great but it is not chipped! This video is all focused on the chipped adapters, but I use a Shoten F to E mount to connect the Neewer E to Z for the vintage look.
It kills me that this has to be so convoluted. Nikon could surely create an "ultimate" adapter, but Nikon does Nikon things...
I think there's just not enough money to be made from adapters, more from newer Z lenses? Nikon is competing for market share so there's hope if we make enough demands as the community
@@BokehTherapy funny thing is the lack of a good adapter is exactly what's keeping me from committing to a new Z body.
Hope Nikon hears the feedback!
@@nickthaskater And that isn't significant to any business....the very few people that want what they want without any understanding of what the people at Nikon want, which is to survive and prosper in a very competitive market where they're not the king and mistakes can cost them dearly....who cares about the ten people that "oh I'd buy the camera if you had an adaptor" which is a lie anyway....do you have a Fuji XT5? Because Fuji has the adaptors....do you have any of the other cameras that have the adaptors that let you use third party lenses? Is your work any good or are you just a guy with so much free time that you make random comments on RUclips without even realizing that everyone at Nikon can think of what you think of...and much more, and processes that input in a prioritized consideration of what grows our business? Nothing wrong with letting you choose a different camera, just as you're free to start your own camera manufacturing company and spend the millions on capital investments, lawyers for the contracts, rental agreements, employee payroll, employee benefits, business insurance, shipping fees, production plants, company vehicles, engineering staff, consultants, advertising, etc......maybe do all that and see if you care about one guy that wants you to make a camera his way?
@locophoto6881 you have a lot of time on your hands. Go out and shoot.
I just got the Nikon ZF with the 40mm (amazing camera) and I’m thinking about getting the 35 mm 1.8. Would you say that the 35 mm 1.8 is a little bit too close to the 40 or is it pretty different? I shoot also on the Fuji X 100 V and that’s my favorite focal length. I also have the 50mm so I’m hoping I’m not overlapping. But interestingly the 50 and the 40 are different enough in my eyes to warrant having both. I’m just wondering if maybe I’m better off getting the 28 2.8 SE or 35 1.8 as the last lens (for now) to round out my kit of the 40, 50 an 85. Thanks for any advice.
I am a sucker for a good 35mm, and the 35mm f1.8 S is great! A bit lighter than the 50mm f1.8 S but pretty much identical in size. It is different enough from the 40mm in my opinion - a 35mm and 50mm kit is the one I travel with if I have the space. If I don't have space then the 40mm by itself is what I go with.
Thank you for doing this. I’ve been agonising over the adapter problem and it’s been keeping me from buying vintage lenses. So glad I already have the e-z from neewer so I’m half way there already.
Adapters are all too expensive and there’s almost no information out there. Glad this video was useful!
Aah, Map Camera in Shinjuku, I was there only last week. I came away with a Zeiss Otus 1.4/55mm, in Nikon F-mount, no less. Love the experience shopping in that store.
Yes Map camera is amazing! Fujiya camera in Nakano broadway is also fantastic. Congrats on the Zeiss Otus!
@BokehTherapy thank you! I will be getting a brand new Nikon D850 as a second / main camera to my blue Zf. I have always wanted this D850, but got "drawn / seduced" by the aesthetics of the Zf. Now, that I have the Zf and those Voigtlander SLii-S lenses, I can finally fulfil my dream of getting the D850, and Zeiss Otus lenses to go with it. Presently, I am 1 Otus lens in, only 3 left to go. I return to Japan next year, and will most definitely visit Fujiya Camera.
The D850 is wonderful to hold, I took a little too long trying one out haha…
Not sure if someone pointed it out but in with the neewer adapter, you can manually change the focal length and aperture settings when you change the setting on the txt file in the lens. I’ve tested it with my different focal length lenses and you can clearly tell a huge difference with ibis once the proper focal length is set. Hope this helps!
Thanks Jacob!!
Even brand new straight from the box Z lenses will have dust in it if you shine light through one end and look through the other.
Haha yup dust is everywhere. Not a dealbreaker for sure
in reality it should be Voigtlander 58 1.4
Mmm I have the Nikon 58mm f1.4 G, haven’t tested that Voigtlander. Thanks for the tip!
@@BokehTherapy it's a new manual lens and considered to be one of the best especially for portraits ^^
Awesome! I think it’s chipped for F mount too right?
@@BokehTherapy yep!
